Disconnecting Cinema Display Leaves Windows Stranded on Laptop

Dear All,
I use a 17" PowerBook with a newly purchased 20" Cinema Display in dual screen (non-mirroring mode) at work and just the laptop at home. The CInema Display is set as the primary monitor.
Using Excel in dual screen mode before leaving work on Thursday, I had a spreadsheet open on the laptop (secondary) screen. I disconnected everything and went home. Now, with only the laptop, that spreadsheet is inaccessible. It's open and, by using Expose I can see it, but when I pick it, it just slides off the screen.
Is there any way to get it back?
I'm figuring when I get to work I'll be able to get it. And I also assume that I should have probably gone through a "detect displays" sequence after disconnecting (although that's not working now). Maybe using the laptop as the primary display is the secret as well. However, it would be nice to be able to get it now.
Incidentally, I do not find Apple's dual screen setup very elegant. Having the main menu only at the top of the primary screen means a lot of mouse movement when using the secondary screen. In addition, when I use right click menus on some secondary screen programs, they appear on the primary screen.
Thanks for the help... Jim
PS - For those who saw my post on another forum about a window too large to access, it is not related to the dual screen. It is running on a different system without the dual screen although I tried using the larger dual screen to acces it (unsuccessfully).

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
tell application "Microsoft Excel"
set bounds of window 1 to {61, 95, 465, 313}
end tell
Insert the application's name in the first line inside the quote marks, press the Run button, and then resize the window. Close all open documents in Excel which you can see. This script may not work for all applications.

  • Why won't my 20" cinema display work with an HP laptop / Vista

I have my 20" cinema display connected to my hp laptop (using vista) under hardware, and a few other places it shows that the monitor is detected, but I can't get a picture to show on the monitor no matter what I do. It stays black, even though it is detected. Has anyone else had an experience with this?

the option(s) that it gives you are the recommended resolutions as determined by the "handshake" that happens between the monitor and computer (sort of a pre-UPnP standard). you can always press the advanced button and then manually select any resolution / display rate that your graphics card is capable of displaying.
what was the option, by the way? what resolution and display rate?
the resolution should be 1680x1050 and the refresh rate can probably be anything from 60 to 80 Hz.

  • Cinema Display on Windows XP 64bits

    Hello,
Im trying definitely to use the controls to turn of and on the cinema display under Windows XP x64, the excelent drivers WinACD for windows 32bits doesnt work on windows xp 64bits edition.
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/winacd
I read some people did the work to make it happend, but they never make it public for the rest of us to use this modified dirvers.
I heard about one way to do it, we need te .INF file of the WinACD drivers unzipping the .MSI instalator of the drivers, them some one says, that we have to modify the way he says
If you unzip the WinACD msi file, one of the files is actually the display INF file. Edit that and change:
    [Manufacturer]
    %APPLE%=APPLE_MON
    [APPLE_MON]
    to:
    [Manufacturer]
    %APPLE%=APPLE_MON,NTamd64
    [APPLE_MON.NTamd64]
Save it, and tell WinXP 64 to use that file for the driver of your “pluag-and-play” monitor.
But i dont get the .INF file, can some one, help me, can some one give me a solution, any thing, if you can extract the .INF file and upload it to me for me to modify it, i be glad, or some one can share a complete solution for this, because we are a lot of people that needs Windows Xp 64 Bits to render and make CAD that is no compatible with windows Vista and have Cinema Display.
Im gettin mad, please help me if you can, them i will share the solution uploading it to SourceForge.net
    Thanks

I actually just reinstalled the drivers, but this time from a new export onto usb.  The display works fine now.  I think it just didn't put all of the drivers on the first time I installed the apple stuff.
Try taking all of your drivers off and then reinstalling.
Not sure if this really helps.

  • Can't use 20" Cinema display on Windows

I posted this question on the Mac/Windows compatability forum, but perhaps this forum might be more relevant.
I just purchased a 20" Cinema display to use with my Windows VIsta machine. I notice there a number of people using this forum that also use Apple monitors on Windows machines.
I have not been able to use this monitor yet, as when I hook it up and turn on my computer my system will not boot. It freezes up at the third screen dealing with BIOS. The final line of a DOS screen reads: AHCI Bios not installed.
My system will not respond at this point, I have to turn off the computer and replace the Apple monitor with my old CRT model. Then my system immediately runs normally.
Has anyone else dealt with anything like this?
Thanks for any help that might be offered.

I've now seen there are postings on the topic so please ignore my query.  I've looked to delete this but so far can't see how....Thanks

  • Apple Cinema Displays and Windows

I know it will work with windows. But what kinda of
controls will I get? Since there is no controls on
the monitor it seems besides brightness. Or it all
depended on the graphic cards to be in control?
What is default color temp then?
      Windows XP Pro

WinACP <http://sourceforge.net/projects/winacd/> will give you a monitor control panel in XP.

  • After installing Mountain Lion my MacBookPro crashes after disconnecting from Cinema Display

Ever since I installed Mountain Lion on my 15" MacBookPro (early 2011 first with Tunderbolt connector) it crashes after disconnecting from Cinema display (this Cinema does not have Thunderbolt but mini display port). It woked fine under Lion.
This crash occurs in following situation:
MacBookPro is in closed clam shell operation. When Cinema display is still connected, I put MacBookPro into sleep. Then I disconnect Cinema display mini diplay connector from Thuderbotl port.
When I get home and open MacBookPro it is in deep kernel crash.
    It happens every time.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thanks

    You can bypass GateKeeper.

  • Windows 8.1 with a 24" Cinema Display?

Where can I get actual drivers for the cinema display on windows 8.1?  It only detects as Generic PnP monitor, and I can't use the awesome iSight camera with it at all...device manager shows driver warning :/
Tried downloading bootcamp, but says it can't install...tried extracting and installing the AppleDisplayInstaller64.exe, no change :/
Anyone else know how to get this thing recognized?  In order to plug it into the PC I needed a minidisplayport->displayport adapter...is that what's hosing me?

Device manager won't recognize isight, but Skype on Win 8.1 does. It work fine for me.

  • Connecting a Cinema Display

Can I connect an older Cinema Display (65W) with a Dell laptop? I've got HDMI and USB ports only.

    Hi taniabudgie,
If you'd like to use an Apple Cinema Display with a Windows PC, then you just need to connect to the display's DVI connection using an HDMI to DVI converter cable.
The Apple Cinema Display product line features the industry standard DVI connector, which allows it to be connected to a variety of computer systems, including both Apple and Windows-based computers. The DVI connection, along with the VESA DDC support, removes the barriers to using an Apple display with a non-Macintosh PC. As long as your graphics card supports the full single link and/or dual link bandwidth defined in the DVI specification and incorporates DDC technology, your PC graphics card will support the Apple Cinema Display line.
The 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display and the 20-inch Apple Cinema Display require a single link DVI signal. The 30-inch Cinema HD Display requires dual link DVI support to drive its massive amount of pixels.
Using Apple displays with computers running Windows
    Take care,
    Alex H.

  • Mac Mini 2012 and I want to use a new 27" Lighting Display and my old 27" Cinema Display as a second Monitor

    Evening all,
I have a Mac Mini that I have been using a 27" Cinema Display on for a couple years - works GREAT, love the Mini and that display. The Cinema Display has Power for a Laptop, USB connector and a Mini Display Port connection on it.
I am a Guitarist / Songwriter and I use Pro Tools a lot. So I thought I would invest in the new Lightning Display for my Mac Mini. I would get the extra ports for Firewire, and USB, as well as now I could "Daisy Chain" my old Cinema Display off the new Lightning Display.
WHAT A PAIN IN THE BUTT THIS HAS TURNED INTO !!!!  I have honestly spent more than 6 hours trying to find adapters or ways to make these monitors BOTH work at the same time with the Mac Mini ( you know, a Dual Monitor Setup . . .)
    HELP !!!
1 - If I could find a HDMI MALE to Mini Display Port FEMALE adapter, I would run it on the HDMI interface - apparently no such adapter exists.
2 - You apparently can NOT daisy chaine the Cinema Display off the Thunderbolt Port on the new Monitor ( silly that that does not work, but it does not )
I am really stuck here - how do I get these monitors to work as "Dual Monitors" on the Mac Mini ???
    Thanks !

The HDMI port won't work for a 27" monitor, it maxes out at 1920*1200...
Supports dual simultaneous displays -- 1920x1200 on an HDMI display or a DVI display using the included HDMI-to-DVI adapter and 2560x1600 on a Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort display or even a VGA display (with adapter). Thunderbolt is backwards-compatible with Mini DisplayPort-equipped displays as well as adapters that are compatible with Mini DisplayPort (DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI and HDMI).

  • Extending Ddsplay image onto 2 x 20inch Cinema Displays.

    Hi,
I have two 20inch Cinema Displays, and a 15inch G4 Laptop. Is there a device available that would allow me to extend my desktop onto both monitors (not as a mirror of my desktop, but as a true extension).
    Example: Display (1) = Safari
    Display (2) = iPhoto
I hope I am communicating my question clearly. In a nutshell, one monitor would be used for one application, and the other running whatever else. In this config, my mouse would "float" from 1 display to the other, as if both displays were joined together, seamlessly.

If your laptop has a CardBus slot you can use it with a VTBook
<http://www.villagetronic.com/vtbook/index.html> for a second external display. The other display uses the laptop's DVI port.

  • 15" MacBook Pro / 30" Cinema Display - performance?

Is anyone usng a current (Early 2011) 15" MacBook Pro with a 30" cinema display? Having any performance issues?
I'm using Photoshop 5.1 and after a short time the perforance lags (drastically, and cursor is offset etc.) It almost seems like the cache/buffer are not being cleared. I spoke w/Apple tech and they offered no known issues. I repaired permissions, reset cache, reset PRam, etc. (as directed). Now running WITHOUT CInema Display. PShop seems to be OK. Will try for awhile longer, then re-attach Cinema to test. My guess is the installed video hardware/ram is just not up to the task.
I did upgrade to 8GB RAM -which should help. There is no Apple Hardware test available for this Mac (does not ship w/OS DVDs) but the Apple tech said there would be a startup alert if there were RAM issues.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced similar?
Maybe I should try for an upgrade to the higher spec 15" MacBook? (has more VRam, faster card etc -not much else)

Thanks ALiALKi -but I already tried to access the Apple Hardware test online -NG. The Apple tech said it would not work with this unit. Apparently this MacBook was updated to Lion BEFORE sale Lion was NOT originally installed. So for some reason it won't access the online test (I tried carefully numersous times)
Also, as mentioned in OP -the ram is tested on startup & there would be an audible alert if defective (according to the tech I spoke to) I do have an appt at an Apple store for further testing.
Still looking to hear from anyone who is running a 30" Cinema Display with this -or other laptop.
    Thanks

  • New MacBook Pro & 27" Apple LED Cinema Display Don't Go to Sleep

I recently purchased a new 13" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,1) and a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display. When they are connected the computer occasionally has a problem being put to sleep. When clicking sleep, the monitor will take a little while to shut off, but in about 10 seconds, it will turn back on. Immediately when turning on, the image on the screen is quite scrambled (it does correct itself). Usually, if I attempt to put it to sleep multiple times, it will end up working. When it does go to sleep (correctly), the screen will turn off much faster than the times where it doesn't sleep.
Anyone else have a similar issue they found a fix to? When speaking to Apple support, they thought it was part of an issue with 10.6.6, however, the update to 10.6.7 did not solve the issue.
PS - I keep my MacBook Pro lid closed when using the display.

Is your 2.6 the CTO upgrade from the high end 2.3 15"?
Yes, both will work under OSX and Windows. One note, when you boot Windows, you need to unplug the USB from the LED Cinema display or Windows will not boot. Once booted, then plug the USB back in to regain brightness, etc controls.

  • VGA Windows laptop to Apple LED Cinema Display...?

Attaching VGA Windows laptop to Apple LED Cinema Display...? Is this possible? I have a personal MBP that'd work fine, but need to connect a work laptop as well. Any insight would be great. Thanks!

As mentioned, the biggest issue is that the VGA signal is analog, and the Apple Cinema Displays only accept digital signals. Does your laptop have any other videop output ports? A DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort would be the easiest, of course, but if you have an HDMI connection, you could get something like the Atlona HDMI to Mini DisplayPort Converter and Scaler. Not exactly cheap at $170, but if you really need it, and you have the port, maybe it is a solution for you. The only issue, it seems, is you would be limited to 1920x1080 resolution.
