Disconnecting display knocks Mac off network

After the latest Tiger update (10.4.4) my PM G5 disconnects from the network (AirPort Extreme card connecting to a Linksys 802.11g router) when I unplug the monitor.
I use a PowerBook for work, and when working from home I disconnect the display, FireWire, and USB cables from the G5 and plug them into the PB. Then I use OSXVNC+Chicken of the VNC to control the "headless" G5 from the PB. This has worked well in the past.
Now, when the display cable is removed from the G5, it disconnects from the network completely. No VNC, no file sharing, it doesn't even show up under Bonjour.
Did something change in a recent Tiger update to make this happen? If so, how can I undo this "enhancement"?
Thanks for any ideas.

Not that ayone has shown interest in this problem, but I solved it by turning the Firewall off. Perhaps not a great security plan, but at least it allowed me to get my headless G5 back on the network. I would have done something more refined like open only certain ports, but the problem was that the computer removed itself completely from the network--it didn't just lock down certain ports.
Anyway, that's what fixed my problem.

My ipad keeps disconnecting and throwing me off apps. There are no updates. What could bethe problem?

    1. Double-click the Home button and hold apps in the Task Bar down until they all wiggle then tap the minus sign to close apps. Tap the home button to return to Home screen.
    2. Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo.

  • Firewire HD knocks me off Airport network

Hi everyone. I have what I think is a rather strange problem. I have an iBook G4 with built-in airport card that I have been using with an airport express for over 1 year for wireless internet access, airtunes and printing. I bought a SmartDisk FireLite firewire hard drive to move my iTunes library off the iBook and to back up some photos. Whenever I plug in the HD, I get kicked off the airport network. If I try to reconnect, I get an error message stating there was an error when trying to connect to the network. This happens whenever the HD is plugged in whether it is mounted or not. When I unplug the HD, I am able to connect to the airport network without difficulty. When the hard drive is plugged in, I can still connect my wireless Palm device to the network, so I'm pretty sure it is a problem with the firewire drive somehow messing up my airport connection on the iBook. Also, if I connect my iBook directly to the internet via wired ethernet, there is no problem with having the HD plugged in.
I called SmartDisk's support and they have never encountered anything like this before.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Does that drive use an external power supply?
If not (or even if so and it is malfunctioning) it is possible that when the drive draws power from the FW port on the iBook it then cannot supply enough to the Airport card and then knocks you off line.

  • Knocked off network by iPhone firmware updates and syncs

Every time I either sync the iphone or update iPhone firmware, I get knocked off my internal web network and must reboot my computer to once again have web and email access. It always occurs <during> firmware downloads, so I have to reboot my computer mid-download for the download to continue, and sometimes several times to achieve the full download. The (Airport Xtreme)router does not need to be rebooted. Nothing else I do has this effect (knocking me off the network). Very frustrating and time-consuming -- any clues?
    Thx!,

  • IPhone knocks my Desktop Mac off of home WiFi!

I have WiFi in my home- my Mac Pro gets my internet via Airport from my wireless router. However, since I got my iPhone 3GS, if I connect it to the WiFi in my home, it kicks the desktop Mac off from having an internet connection. So, I can only use one device on my WiFi at a time. Anyone have this issue or have a fix?

    Couple of other suggestions:
Check your router DHCP range and set your iphone as STATIC IP ADDRESS and NOT within your DHCP range...this will not conflict with all another wireless device that connected to your router.
Does the computer have a static IP or is it configured to use a dynamic IP given by the router as well?
When the iphone connects to the router and gets a IP, it could be conflicting with the IP given to the computer.

  • New cinema display on Mac Pro monitor keeps turning off/going dark. Support told me a keyboard shortcut (something like option R L)... I'd appreciate it if anyone knows it. I had this problem when i 1st bought it 2 months ago.

My new cinema display fro mac pro just went dark. When I 1st bought it, the display wouldn't turn on.I called support and they gave me a keyboard shortcut - something like Option+R+L - that you held down for 2 restart cycles. Then it magically turned on. I can't remember the sequence and I'm afraid to guess! I'd appreciate if anyone knows the trick. I'm also wondering if I should bring this display back...

Cassandra from Apple Support ROCKS!!!! She's a supervisor somewhere and should have a raise. Pleasant, smart and professional with a customer who wouldn't take "I don't know" for an answer.
If your cinema display goes dark:
    1. shut down computer
    2. restart
    3. immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R keys simultaneously for a few minutes (seems forever)
    4. keep holding keys for 2 startup cycles
    5. release and go back to work if you're lucky to have a restored screen

  • Functioning Monitor will not display with Mac Mini

I'm trying to get an IBM E74 CRT monitor working with an early 2009 Mac Mini. I have it connected with Apple's mini-DVI to VGA adapater. The Mac "sees" the monitor since with screen sharing I can see the Display System Preference when the monitor is attached. It shows the monitor as an IBM E74 and allows what appear to be appropriate choices as far as resolution and refresh rate are concerned. I tried many combinations of resolution and refresh rate with no difference in behavior.
The monitor always acts like no signal is detected (built it message on monitor display). This monitor works fine with a B&W G3 and a late 2007 MacBook Pro. Any ideas why the Mac Mini is not driving the monitor? Have tried all combinations cycling power on the monitor, connecting / disconnecting while the Mac Mini is power up. Have had the monitor connected and powered on when booting the Mac Mini. For whatever reason the monitor does not seem to work with the Mac Mini, but works fine with other computers.
The monitor despite its' age has pretty low time on it and is quite serviceable. Are there quirks with the VGA interface that we may be running into? I would like to get this combo working together if at all possible.

I would say the VGA interface did evolve somewhat over that time period. In particular, the thing that may have changed that could be the underlying cause of the problem is sync termination impedance has trended upwards. It's not unusual to find older monitors with low impedance on sync. Some even had 75 ohm impedance, which required a line driver for sync the same as for video.
It could be the IBM monitor has fairly low termination impedance and the mini is unable to provide sufficient output on the sync lines to drive TTL levels, whereas the MBP is doing better. You could check this with a simple ohm meter with the IBM monitor turned off. Ideally, for the mini, you would want to see a high impedance reading on H and V sync, like close to 2k ohms. If it's 500 ohms or less, then the mini may not be able to drive sync properly.
On an old monitor like that, it is likely to have old fashioned components with axial leads rather than surface mount components. If you are handy with a soldering iron, you could find the offending resistors and bring the monitor up to a more modern, high impedance standard of 1.8k to 2.2k.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and your log is showing a NVIDIA graphic card problem.
Apple has determined that these computers have got a defective NVIDIA graphic card, that may cause unexpected restarts, black screens, kernel panics... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Fortunately, Apple is repairing all of these computers for free, so just make a backup of your data and take the MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller to get your computer repaired. This repair may take some days depending on the place you take the MacBook Pro, because the whole logic board has to be replaced

  • Display be tuen off , external hard disk also fall into sleep

I found that when display be turn off,  the external HDD also fall into sleep, and copy job be stop.
How can I set external not fall into sleep after display be turn off。

When you write to a hard disk it uses a lot more power in quite large surges.
Its very unlikely that the hub would have sufficient power to supply this requirement, so although the drive may appear to be spinning, you cannot write to it.
This would seem like the most likely reason.
I assume you can read files that you have placed on the drive?
The USB port on the hub is very slow, so you are better copying the files using you laptop, and using the hub for read-only.
This should work for pictures and audio, but it is unlikely to be fast enough for video.
I have a USB memory stick connected to mine, purely for swapping files between computers.

    Hi Tarun 49,
If you are having issues with your iPhone such as you describe, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
iOS: Force an app to close
Next, I would try restarting the iPhone -
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • WAC: Bonjour record is displayed in MAC OS 10.9 but not 10.8

    Hi everyone,
When my device goes into WAC (Wireless Accessory Config) mode, the Bonjour record is not displayed in MAC OS ver 10.8.
But it is visible on OS 10.9. Similarly, it is not visible in Safari on Windows PC too.
Will this be a problem for AirPlay/MFi certification?
If so, any suggestions to fix this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sripad.

    Set" TimeZone Support" to OFF.

  • A document page opens that is too big for the display and runs off the end of the monitor

How do you fix a problem where document pages open that are too big for the display and runs off the end of the monitor? The borders are off the monitor so there is no window edge to grab and adjust.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Every time I turn my mac off, the desktop background changes. It always returns to the same picture, which was the second or third thing I changed my desktop to after getting my mac. I have background switching unchecked in my preferences, and I have never selected it as an option. Also, when I go to my preferences, it will show the icon of the picture I changed it to, even though the desktop itself has switched back.

I would start with some basic troubleshooting.
    REPAIRING DISK PERMISSIONS -
NOTE: refer to article "About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature" found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1452 - for the actual apple article on these step. ----
    - click finder in the bottom dock, and in the window that opens, select applications in the left column - scroll through until you see the 'Utilities' folder and double click to open it.  Then double click on 'Disk Utility'
    - When prompted to select a disk volume or image, select the 'Macintosh HD' in the left column
    - ensure the the "first aid" tab is highlighted blue in the middle of the screen
    - click the button at the bottom that says 'Repair Disk Permissions'
    - this process will take a few minutes to run.  It will indicate it's done, by scrolling to the bottom of the "details area" displaying 'Permissions repair complete'
Dan Frankes has written an excellent article for Macworld on "Permissions" and the need to repair them - see - http://www.macworld.com/article/52220/2006/08/repairpermissions.html.    Another good web site is - http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/durepairfns.html.
    REPAIRING DISK - About OS X Recovery - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718.
    - restart your computer hold down command + R keys on the keyboard to boot you into Lion / Mountain Lion Recovery mode
    - select english as your main language then the continue arrow
    - select "Disk Utility" on the resulting screen then 'Disk Utility' ---
    - When prompted to select a disk volume or image, select the 'Macintosh HD' in the left column
    - ensure the the "first aid" tab is highlighted blue in the middle of the screen
    - click the button at the bottom that says 'REPAIR DISK' .......NOT "Repair disk permissions"
    - this process will take a few minutes to run.  It will indicate it's done, by scrolling to the bottom of the "details area" displaying "The Macintosh HD appears OK"
If you get any other message OTHER than "The Macintosh HD appears OK", like "the Macintosh HD was repaired successfully" run the "Disk Repair" again, until it displays  "The Macintosh HD appears OK".
Once done, restart the computer as normal

  • Display Problem: Mac Mini no longer shows up on my Hitachi TV

Everything had worked just fine for a couple of months and then I started importing a bunch of my CDs. During this process, I did something that made the desktop image from the mac mini larger than that of the TV (So I couldnt see the upper menu and the lower one was partly cut off.
To try to fix it, I went into the display preferences menu and chose a different resolution (I think was something X something interlaced). When I did that, the screen faded black and I couldnt see anything. For a while, I could see the initial load screen for the mini, but the desktop would never show up and my TV would just say No Sync. Signal.
Any thoughts? Thanks a ton for your help.

hermanherman, welcome to Apple Discussions. Generally when this type of issue crops up it can be corrected by starting up in Safe Mode. To start the mini in Safe Mode, after pressing the mini's power button, immediately press and hold down the Shift key on the keyboard until you see a message on the display that Mac OS is starting in Safe Mode. When you see that message you can let go of the Shift key. Hopefully you will have a useable screen at that point. Go into Displays preferences and select your desired resolution. Then restart the mini normally (don't hold Shift) and hopefully your last resolution setting will persist and you will have your screen back.
By the way, what you were looking for in the first place is an "Overscan" check box within Displays preferences. This controls whether the edges of the Mac desktop will be beyond the borders of the screen or not. Good luck.
