Disconnecting external screen not always withoud problemns

I noticed that when I unplug my external screen sometimes I keep an error.
Like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24039811@N04/2284699742/ (leaving a 1x1 display).
Could this be a bug, or is there a way to 'detach' a display before I disconnect it?

I have this issue frequently on MacOS 10.8.5. My Macbook Pro Retina seems to partially think there's still an external monitor connected.
Just today I figured out a workaround that fixes my machine without a reboot:
1. Load the Displays preferences. Since my menu bar is missing, Since I don't have a menu bar visible, Option-F2 (brightness) will bring this up.
2. I see two separate windows for display settings: the normal "Color LCD" window for my internal Macbook display, and another window for the phantom external display. I usually have to use the "Gather Windows" button to put them both on the same screen.
3. In the displays preferences for the phantom external display, change the Rotation setting from Standard to another setting, like 90 degrees.
That change was enough to cause the Macbook to reset the displays and realize the external display wasn't there. The second Displays window disappears, and my dock and menu bars are back on my built-in display!
I've only tried this once so far, so hopefully it holds up on future occasions. But, this has been such a persistenly annoying problem for me that I wanted to post this in case it can help anyone else!

I would suggest you visit an Apple dealer, preferably an Apple Store if there's one in your city, and ask for assistance in determining what you need. The questions and issues you bring up are rather complex to address in a technical support forum and would be better addressed in person where you and the salesperson can ask questions back and forth to arrive at the optimal setup.

  • Cursor disappears when disconnecting external screen

Hi all, just in case the subject line didn't say it all, we have recently been experiencing a loss of our cursor after we disconnect an external screen. It seems to happen with both the DVI and VGA adaptors. I am turning off the external screen before disconnecting the adaptor, however after our powerbook refreshes the cursor is invisible. It still functions fully, it's just invisible. Only a restart brings it back. We've had the powerbook for three years and as I stated before this is a recent development. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

  • 3 GS screen not always responsive

Hi. Just got the 3GS a week ago, and i've noticed that when i touch the screen, its not always responsive. Some times i have to touch it several times to get it to work.
    any one have this issue?
    thanks

Hi. I was having the same issue. I took my phone to the genius bar (apple store) and they tightened one of the cables inside the phone. They guy told me that apple has seen some phones that have a loose cable inside and its a quick 2 minute fix. Since I went to the apple store and they did the reconnecting, I haven't had that problem

  • External screen not working

I had to reload my applications on my phone last night and since then my external screen is only white and says tmobile on it.  I have tried to hard reset it and have gone through all my settings.  I can't figure out what it is doing or what I am supposed to do because my phone pretty much works the same way it was before with the exeption of the external screen.  Anyone have any ideas?

When you said you had to reload your phone, did you have to upgrade or reload the handheld software? If so just try going through the Application Loader and run the update again.

  • Can I horizontally flip an external screen (Not rotation)

I am currently working on my master-thesis. During the developement of my prototype I came upon a litlle problem…
I would like to "flip" my external screen. Is their any kind of tweak or possibility to do this?
I'm working on a Macbook Air and i'm working with an external screen.
    Any sloution is welcome!
I have tried to download the program "Display Rotation Menu" but you can only rotate (90°, 180°, 270°) the external screen and I would like to flip it…
    Thank in advance!

Thanks for the reply David Won1,
The only problem is, that I would like to flip my screen.
For example: If I can flip my screen it wouldn't be possible to read my text on my screen, because it's written in mirrorwriting. This means that the text that I am reading is written in reverse.
And for my master thesis I would like to have my screen in a "reverse" position, like the previous example.
Is there no tweak, program or solution that can help me?
Again, thanks for all the help.

  • Screen not always responding right when plugged in?

I notice occasionally my screen just goes crazy. I'll be touching in the middle and it ends up actually touching done (no where Near where anything was touching). At first I thought it was the Body Glove case I have, so I removed it.
This doesn't always happen either, which is strange. After using the phone for a while though, I've noticed it only has happened while plugged in (Just to the wall, I don't plug it into the computer because I'm at work). As soon as I unplugged it, I could enter the text I needed and it was fine.
Is this happening to anyone else? I'm trying to find out if it's a real issue, or if I maybe just have a defective phone.

This happened to me one day...but I had it plugged into the work computer to charge...as soon as I held my finger in it (like in imovie) the screen would start jittering...but as soon as I disconnected it, it would work fine. This is only at work (PC) but not at home (macbook pro). Not sure why that is though.

  • Satellite L670-1JP external HDD not always recognized on start-up

I bought a Samsung G3 external HD. The first time i plugged it in, it was directly recognized by my Toshiba Satellite L670-1JP and worked with no problems.
But later, almost everytime I start up my computer, he does not find the external HD. I then have to unplug en replug the USB connection several times to make it work.
This is rather time consuming, so how can I solve this problem ?

    Hi
Do other USB devices work properly in connection with the Satellite L notebook?
Did you test this external HDD with other computers/notebooks?
I think you should do this because it could be a external HDD malfunction.
    Check this!

  • External monitor not detected on Thinkpad W530 intel-virtual-output

I'm having problems with connecting my ThinkPad W530 to external monitors since a few months. I'm using NVIDIA Optimus and bumblebee/optirun since the VGA and Mini DisplayPort connectors are only wired to the NVIDIA card om this laptop. For a long time I have executed:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
Then I have started the Screens GUI tool in Gnome to setup the placement of the external screen but now the external screen is not present in the GUI tool and xrandr gives me:
    Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
    LVDS1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm
    1920x1080 60.00*+ 50.00
    1400x1050 59.98
    1280x1024 60.02
    1280x960 60.00
    1024x768 60.00
    800x600 60.32 56.25
    640x480 59.94
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
If I select "Discrete mode" and select startup screen as VGA in the BIOS the BIOS and the Grub screens shows on the external monitor but the screen locks on the screen that shows that the system is booting with the linux-ck kernel. This has never worked for me in Arch Linux so that is no surprise. In Ubuntu everything everything worked fine the last time I tried.
How can I debug this? Why is the external screen not detected any more?

Thanks, I am not sure exactly how to read the logs but I cannot find anything that is obviously wrong
Below is my log with an external screen connected via Mini DisplayPort and after running:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
a few times, no more logs seem to be added when I connect/disconnect the monitor or when I run the above two commands more times.

  • IMAC and external screen--screen flickering and erratic mouse behavior

I have purchased a screen Medion 25.5 inch to connect it to my IMAC 27 inch.
I have noticed two unexpected behaviours:
    - from time to time, after the IMAC comes out of the SLEEP mode, the external screen is flickering, I need to put the IMAC to sleep one or several times before the display of the external screen becomes stable.
    - since I connected the external screen, the behavior of the mouse is highly erratic, eg when I move the mouse by a fraction of a millimeter, the display of the mouse pointer moves by half a screen, or even disappears completely. I have performed many tests, with several apple mice, a Dell mouse and a Microsoft mouse. As soon as I completely disconnect the screen (not only power the screen down) the mouse works normally again. I have now decided to stop using the external screen until a software update resolves the situation.
    Any advice?
    Patrick

When my 2008 24" iMac started to die from overheating, two of the symptoms I would see would be white flickering from the bottom going about half way up, like it was going blank and repainting the screen over and over. Also, the mouse pointer would jump erratically to all the edges and corners of the screen. After a few seconds, it might recover or it might freeze. I would use a program like iStat Pro to see what your temps are when you attach that screen. I suspect it may be excess heat due to the GPU now pushing two screens instead of 1?
Also try diags, and all those reset thingies people keep mentioning over and over.

  • T60 2 external screens + internal LCD screen

Hi, I have a T60 with the Advanced mini dock and 2 Lenovo ThinkVision external LCD screens.  Can I make both external screens and the internal screen work with this setup?
I understand the mini dock can only drive to 2 external screens not the internal also.
Can I connect 1 external screen VGA to the mini dock and then connect both external screens DVI together via the DVI connector on the external displays?

i don't think you can drive three screens at the same time with this set up.

  • Best way to disconnect from external screen?

This problem has been on-going, but I am only now asking for help. It has recurred over now 3 reinstallations of 10.5.
I have an external (Dell) screen, and I run my MBP (Core Duo 2GHz) with the internal screen closed. I have not been able to figure out how to detach the computer from the screen and have it reliably sleep. Instead of sleeping, the MBP goes into some sort of dark-screen state, in which I have to first kill it (holding down the power button for 10 secs.) and then reboot it.
There are the following connections: sound out, USB out, video out, and power.
For a while I tried the following: sleep the MBP (from the Apple Menu), unplug each of the wires. Often when I do this, the MBP will wake up when the USB is disconnected, but since the lid is closed, it doesn't really wake up. When I then open the screen, the screen does not light up, and I have to kill and reboot the machine.
Later I have been trying: unplug the external screen, then unplug the other wires. This seemed to work until today, when I found the same problems.
I have this feeling that the machine isn't really crashed, but that somehow it is losing touch with its built in screen, since I find that I have to first kill the machine (pushing power button for 10 secs), and then reboot it. But since the built-in screen is dark, I don't know what else to do.
Obviously, I could always shut down when unplugging the external screen, but I would rather not do this.
    Thoughts?
    A

I'm unable to recreate the problem on my CD MBP running 10.4.11. It's unclear if you are still unplugging peripherals after you sleep the MBP, but the bottom line is that you shouldn't do that - unplug the USB and the external monitor (audio out/headphone port doesn't matter) +and then+ put the MBP to sleep. Also, note that you should not move the MBP until it is really asleep. Look at the light on the latch - when you select sleep, the light remains solid for a while, then starts pulsating. During the solid light period, the MBP is writing the contents of RAM to the HDD (Safe Sleep); if you move it during this process, you may trigger the sudden motion sensor on the HDD and interrupt sleep (it may still appear to sleep, but when it "wakes" it does so as you describe, with a black screen. (Note that this is the main cause of the "+I put my MBP in the bag and when I took it out it was blazing hot and the screen was dark and it wouldn't wake up, so I had to do a hard reboot+" posts.)
    Hope this helps...

Yesterday, I tried a SEAGATE SSHD but my screen was always a showing a QUESTION MARK (?). It's not the cable because when I put back the old original version, everything works...Any sugestion of brabnding or procédure to upgrade my hard drive?

The largest 2.5" dia SATA drives available are 2 TB in capacity.
Have you tried the Seagate SSHD connected externally to the MBP via USB?  The drive itself may be faulty.
    Ciao.
