Disconnecting the screen from an iMac G5 20" PowerPC

Hi All,
I have an old PowerPC iMac G5 (2002-3 I believe) and the display/video card has just given up. I am getting all the lines on the screen and thus, the screen is not usable. So, I have decided to turn it into a media server sitting in the spare room.
PROBLEM: As I have read on many discussion boards, you can't turn the display off for the computer. And as it is 'broken', I would like to disconnect it all together so it uses up less power (every little bit counts to save the environment). I can connect it via VGA to my TV so will be able to see what I would have otherwise seen on the screen. I opened the unit up but had no idea where to start (have opened up many PCs, but never a mac). Do people have suggestions on what I can do to utilise the unit best as a media server?
Appreciate all suggestions.

There are two iMac G5 designed. The earlier models could be opened easily from the back and various parts accessed. Apple even provides instructions.

The last iMac G5 models (the ones with iSight camera), were not user accessible, except for RAM upgrades.
Which type do you have? Also, which screen size?
If it's the earlier design, if you look at the instructions from the above link for replacing the inverter and disconnect the inverter, that should power off the backlight. The backlight is likely to be the major power draw for the display. I have not done this myself, so I'm not sure if the iMac will pass the startup test if the inverter is disconnected. I don't know how to internally disconnect the LCD itself.

  • I would like to extend the screen from my circa 2013 27in iMAC with thunderbolt onto my circa late 2006 imac using the DVI port on that iMAC. Is this possible? If not is there another approach I can use?

I would like to extend the screen from my circa 2013 27in iMAC with thunderbolt onto my circa late 2006 imac using the DVI port on that iMAC. Is this possible? If not is there another approach I can use? My 2006 iMAC is showing it's age but I figure I can use it as just a monitor just fine. Assuming I can connect the two together.

That older iMac isn't designed to receive video input through the mini-DVI connection. Only certain newer iMacs are able to be used as displays.
Your only options are to use something like ScreenRecycler mentioned above.

  • Can the screen from a 20" 2004 be used to replace a broken screen in a 2006?

I have a 2006 iMac G5 with a broken screen (20").  I also have a 2004 G5 with a bad video card.  Can the screen from the 2004 fit into the 2006 as a replacement?

You need to be able to:
    - Read those files from your old machine.
    - Transfer them to the new machine.
Unless you were intending to buy an external drive anyway, you don't need to buy the external drive just to transfer files. As long as your old machine is connected on the same network, you can transfer the files using Network File Sharing from your PC to your Mac.
I would however recommend purchasing the drive to use for backups with your Mac. Time Machine on Mac makes backups a breeze.

You can use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner.  It will clone your HD to the external.  The format is the same as your internal drive and you can boot from it using Option key at boot time.

You should take it to an Apple store or an AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) Carefully inspect the hinge joint and make sure there is no debris that you can see, you can try carefully sliding some sticky tape thru the joint to clear any loose stuff out. But this sounds like there might be more going on here, and the hinge is something that you do not want to fool with.

strange little bar codes appear around every icon on the screen of my imac?

thankyou peoples, i believe you & think that i may have 'failed electrolytic capacitors', which is somewhat  reasurring as it means that this machine is not about to explode. besides its better than kidney failure or heart failure or generally life failure. its time to upgrade anyway so i think this is a message to do so.......really appreciate your help......

  • Re PowerShot SX510HS: is there a proper protocol for disconnecting the camera from the USB cable?

With my previous camera (not Canon) instructions said I must "safely" disconnect the camera from the USB cable inserted into the back of my computer.  What is the safe way to disconnect my new Canon...can I just pull the cord out?

    Cakbu,
Just make sure you turn off the camera first, then disconnect the USB cable. You should be fine.

  • What would cause a slim horizontal line across the screen of my iMac?

There is a slim line across the Center if the screen. It is horizontal. It does not appear every time I boot up, but it is causing concern.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It would mean that your display or GPU are starting to fail, most likely the GPU, as the line is not permanent. Does the line move during the time your iMac is turned on or change if you start up in safe mode (holding the Shift key while your Mac is starting)?
A good test you can do is to make a screenshot of the screen when your iMac is showing the line. To make the screenshot, press Command, Shift and 3 keys, and the screenshot will appear in the desktop. Double-click it and see if the line appears. If it appears, it's the GPU. If not, it's the display

  • Is there a way to keep the screen from lighting up every time an email comes in, but still be able to see the email on the lock screen when you press the home button?

Is there a way to keep the screen from lighting up everytime an email comes in, but still be able to see the email on the lock screen when you press the home button?  This is killing my battery, but also is kinda the whole point of the notification center in my mind.

This is something I've been wondering. I am a bit like you, I like being able to have a glance at emails or Facebook updates without having to log in, and I think it would be great to be able to turn off the notification switching the screen on, especially for emails as I do get a lot, and Facebook, but I somehow doubt it is possible.
I am currently monitoring how much this eats up my battery charge. On a normal day, after an overnight charge, I would probably still have 30%-40% left when I leave work in the evening. Today, I was down to 48% by lunchtime, where I've usually got a good 60-70% left... Might have to turn email notifications off on lock screen until it's possible to have them appearing in the list without flashing me...

  • The screen of my iMac flashes green during boot-sequence, then returns to normal.

During the boot-sequence the screen of my Imac 27" flashes green (once), then returns to normal. This does not happen when I boot my Windows (Bootcamp) partition, so I assume this is some kind of OSX driver error. This started to happen only after I installed the latest patch (10.9.3). Did anybody else encounter this and/or knows how to get rid of it ?

    Hey fumanchu,
Did a small google search and found the following:
    http://www.likelyanswer.com/28020629/My-Macbook-Pro-Had-A-Flashing-Red,-Blue,-Gr een-Screen-At-Startup
    which lead me to:

    which lead me to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    Basically reset the PRAM.
Worked for me hope it works for you buddy. I did it due what the first link said "might be user abuse to the display". doesn't sound good.
    Cheers

  • How to stop the screen from coming on in my pocket on my Samsung GS4

When I put my Samsung Galaxy S4 in my pocket or my wife puts hers in her purse the display keeps lighting up because the buttons are apparently getting pushed. This is running our batteries down when we aren't even using the phones. Is there a way to stop the screen from lighting?

Make sure that you don't press the home button or power button when you put the phone away. You can reduce the screen time out time down to 15 seconds thereby reducing the battery usage to that short time period. Also make sure that your phone sleeve is not pressing against those two wake up buttons.
