Disconnects and Low download speed

We've had BT Broadband for over 10 years.  We had a few problems at the start and had to stop using any of the telephone extensions when it was installed to get it working.  Since then we've invested in numerous filters in an attempt to cure connection drops and bought an i-plate when the speed was suffering.  Every so often, I get fed up with the time it takes me to deal with connection drops and ring the call centre. They are very sweet but all I get is a temporary solution at best and then it all goes poof again.
For the last year or two so resetting everything and waiting hasn't always been good enough to get a connection again.  By accident, I found that if I made a telephone call, the broadband would come back again without me having to reset.  This proved an expensive option until I discovered the quiet line test (for which I thank the helpful members here lol). My trouble is that its taking quite a long phone call to get the connection going now and it used to be worse when it rained but its now as bad if its sunny.
A possibly related issue is that our download speed has declined enormously over the years.  I've not been able to watch the iPlayer since last year sometime and even YouTube pauses for ages every 10 seconds.  i've had two Openreach engineers out recently and there is another fault report in progress atm.  The trouble is, they don't seem to have made much difference so I'm despairing at the thought of another fruitless visit now.

I've been reading about resistance faults and wondered if our ancient telephone lines round here could be causing one?  We're still on overhead lines I'm afraid and nearly 2km from the Batley exchange.

Just a quick update this morning.  I emailed the mods yesterday so I have hopes.
On the 'normal route' side, the phone call from BT techies that the call centre booked me in for between 8am and 10am didn't happen and there was nothing updated on the online fault progress report since the call centre folk updated it yesterday.  I rang the call centre again to tell them it hadn't happened so they are in the loop and its been escalated again. Had to go through their standard script etc but, hey, I'm reconciled...

The noise margin has changed (it was 6 dB when I looked at it first  thing this morning in preparation for my phone call so I presume someone has adjusted it?  The speed test is coming up with the same figures as before and I can't post it because I forgot to copy it and now I'm getting apache errors.

    I did another noise test and it was completely quiet today. My connection is still awful. I am getting 0.8mbps when I used to get around 6-7mbps 2 weeks ago. I am very close to my exchange so distance is not the issue.

  • TS3899 Upgrade to ios6 got the following problems in my ipad2 . Very low download speed. Can not open my apple mail in my iPad.

    Upgrade to iOS 6 encountered the following problems in my ipad2.
    (1) very low download speed
    (2) I can not open my apple gmail in my iPad.
    (3) I can't download new apps from Internet.

    Have tried your suggestion of toggling but unfortunately that has not solved the problem - but many thanks for the suggestion.

  • Low bandwidth and slow download speeds

    On a normal day, our router (a BT HomeHub 1.5) reports about 1700 kbps downstream bandwidth, and downloads at around 100-180 kBps from most websites.  On Saturday, after it reset itself several times repeatedly, the downstream bandwidth dropped to about 400kbps, and download speeds dropped to 20-30 kBps.  I did the usual of resetting the router (power off, wait 30 seconds, power on), with no effect.
    After about an hour of these speeds with no change, I gave the BT hotline a call.  We did the usual checks (plugged into the master socket, all phones in the house passing through filters, line attenuator/accelerator attached to the master socket) and then she did a line test and couldn't find any faults.  I have since also done a quiet line test (17070, option 2) and couldn't hear any significant static.
    I was advised to leave the router on for 24 hours without resetting it so the line could be reprofiled.  The router managed to reset itself overnight for Sunday morning, but has now been on for over a day, with no change in connection quality.  We've done reprofiling once or twice before, and generally it fixes itself in a few hours.
    Today, I ran btspeedtester and checked the ADSL Line Details page of the router.  You can see the results at the bottom.
    So, is there anything I'm missing on checking (I find it highly unlikely that 'leaving it alone' for 3/5/10 days is going to do anything other than waste my time; see almost every other speed problem topic in the last few weeks to notice that there is a trend of problems not fixing themselves if you just wait ), or should I go ahead and send in a customer support request for the mods here?

  • BT Infinity and weird download speeds

    Greetings!
    This is the first time I've been with BT, I always had virgin media then when I moved out I was forced to go with Sky for my broadband which they could only manage 3-4mb. I've recently had BT infinity installed (3-4 weeks now) and I'm not sure what to make of it.
    Although Sky's download speed was lower, I seemed to get more out of it. In the way of I can see on speedtest.net and speedtester.bt that my ping is low (15ms) and my speed is often between 30-35mb (funnily enough tonight it's sitting at 25mb) however p2p traffic is slow (yes I know it's throttled) but even over Internet explorer it's slow. If I was download a file, say a windows update or a patch for a game with sky I would get a constant 1-2mb download speed with bt it never goes over 200-300kb. Surely this can't be normal?
    I may give BT a ring but due to work hours it'll most likely be on the weekend now. Just seems strange that everything points to a decent download speed but when it actually comes to downloading it's pretty slow.

    Hi, Thanks for your reply. At present I have my laptop done over wireless using a b/g/n/ adapter. To be honest I have yet to try and connect my laptop directly to the router as this kinda defeats the point? I'm assuming you're thinking along the lines of I should get faster download speeds over a wired connection, which i agree with. But, surely 300kb is still low on a 40mb connection?
    I'm in work at the moment so can't check out the test results. But will post them later.

  • Hub disconnecting and intermitten slow speeds sinc...

    so as the title says, one minute the connection will be fine, then it will be really slow, and sometimes just disconnects completly and the orange light flashes on the hub for a while and then it goes back to blue...ive had this problem since before christmas and only had BT for 6 months...not a great first impression of this ISP!

  • V04 and maximum download speed - how do BT get awa...

    I have been a BT Vision customer for only 1 week and all seemed well at first.
    I moved to where I now live on the 1st November and my Total Broadband service was implemented on that date (I have had Total Broadband for many years at my previous address).
    Today I have the dreaded "V04" message and a line sped check reveals a download speed of only 1230 kbps (with an apparent line maximum of 2000 kbps). What the heck is that about? Is this the 21st century or not?
    I live in the middle of a state of the art city development literally next door to the new MediaCity in Manchester (soon to be home to the BBC) so I would have expected line speeds here to be as high as you could have got ANYWHERE
    In addition, how does BT justify selling a product they must KNOW (based on the maximum line speed figure the speed test has thrown up) will not be useable
    If there really are BT people on this forum, I would love some answers and not from someone in a Mumbai call centre who, whilst trying their best, is really just going through the scripted responses
    Another day like this and frankly, BT can shove their box up their nearest junction box!

    If so and your line speed has now dropped then you need to report a line fault.

  • Very high Latency and inconsistent download speeds

    Hi all,
    This is my first time on these forums and hopefully i can find some help for my horrible problem.
    For the last 2-3 weeks my latency has consistently been 200+, i like to play online games alot and i cant with this latency. I have gone threw the whole drill of ringing BT and following there advice and i even had a BT engineer come out and he couldnt' find any problems. BT said they checked my line and couldn't find anything wrong, and the engineer didn't find any problems with the router (black).
     I also have changed all of the wiring from the socket in the wall, which leads to the router, which leaders to a modem (i think its called that) that then connects me to the internet (Cable).
    I am running out of patience as i spend alot of time on games such as Call of Duty and seeing my mates play it as i have 300+ ping is really annoying.
    I Have noticed that the other computer my parents use also have the same high latency issue and they have tried it on cable and wireless with the same bad results. I have a program called xfire which shows my ping for all the servers on my list and there all 200+ but sometimes when i test my speeds on speedtest.net it shows me with 50 ping i believe this is due to the large spikes that i get, when im on call of duty it constantly jumps around 100, 150, 200 and sometimes even 50.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • I've extended my Time Capsule wifi via Airport Express and the download speed is still super slow

    I get an average of 80Mbps download speed when close to the Time Capsule. When I got upstairs in the house the download speed drastically drops. So I decided to extend the wifi range using an Airport Express. See image below. I've placed the Express router upstairs in the house and when I stand close to the Express I get a very slow download speed. About 7Mbps. Even slower than when I hadn't "extended" the range. What's going on...?

    Well, the first rule that you need to remember is that when you "extend" using wireless.....you will have a drop in the potential speed on the network. So, while you might have more "range" for the network, the network speed will drop. Nothing that you can really do about that other than connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection. There will be no speed loss over the Ethernet cable, so the Express should deliver approximately the same speed as the Time Capsule.
    The next rule is that when a device "extends" using wireless, it can only extend the quality and speed of the signal that it receives. A speed "boost" will not appear.
    Try locating the Express about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage.  Anything that you can do to minimize obstructions between the Time Capsule and Express and on to the other area will help.....but you will never get close to the performance of connecting the AirPorts using an wired Ethernet cable.
    Unfortunately, Apple really doesn't tell you very clearly, if at all,  about important things like the two rules above.

  • RDP traffic and upload/download speeds?

    I would monitor your bandwidth at both edge devices.
    RDP in my experience is typically more latency sensitive than bandwidth sensitive.
    Most Internet providers will push you more bandwidth but that will not help the time it takes the data to get back and fourth.
    If you are maxing you connection out in Houston than more bandwidth may be something to consider. Also depending on the cost of the Internet service upgrade.
    You may also look into filtering unwanted traffic from the Houston office. Such as Youtube or recently I found a receptionist watching Hulu.

    I'm having a difficult time understanding how upload/download speeds factor into RDP session speed. I have a company in Houston that hosts an RDS server that has a remote app that uses a local SQL server to get data from. We have a remote office in Dubai that accesses the RDS server to use this SQL app. 
    In Houston we have 20/20 fiber. In Dubai they have 100/28 cable. The Dubai office complains about speed. The Houston office is thinking of upgrading to 40/40 connection. Will that help Dubai's user experience?

    So the technician changed my modem to an Actiontec GT784WN. I now have access to the transceiver statistics.

    Sorry about not replying back sooner. Based on what I see here, you have a line that needs to be repaired by a field tech. Your attenuation is low in the morning hours when your connection is at a higher speed. As your connection degrades, your attenuation is going up while the speed goes down. That is typically the opposite, where a speed decrease causes the attenuation to also decrease a small amount.
    Since you have big swings in speed, attenuation, and relative S/N margin, this is suggestive of a bad splice on the line.
    If you have a landline with Verizon and you have static or other noise on the line, report that problem and do not mention anything about the DSL. If it's just with DSL, DSL Repair should be informed. Emphasise, and strongly emphasise that the solution is not to decrease your speed until that is concerned to be the final solution. A speed decrease won't fix this.

  • Slow browsing speeds and super low download speeds...

    Hello,
    I wonder if anyone is having similar issues or knows what may be a possible cause. Since last night it's became impossible for me to download anything, regardless of the device or source of the download e.g. can't download anything on my PS4, can't download anything on Steam, Youtube takes an age to buffer, websites sometimes load slow, somtimes fast.
    On steam for example the download will start at around 3 MB/s but within about 20 seconds it's dropped right down to mere Bytes. To rule out an issue with my PC I've also tried downloading various things on my ipad and PS4 but have the same issue
    The odd thing is the speed test appears fine as seen below and as a result when speaking with support earlier they told me the line appeared fine. But I can't understand how that can be.

  • Frequent disconnect​s and low DSL speed.

    The disconnects are back again and my speed has dropped from 2.9 to 2.8 to 2.5 to 2.1 to at this point 1.8. Why does this keep happening?  My DSL modem is always on and when I come home from work the connection is down. At this point I have lost some respect for Verizon as this issue has been reoccurring for almost 2 months now. The fixes are short lived and slowly degrade over time.

    I was through a simialr scenario a while back. I noticed a homerun line was run for you , which should eliminate the need for filters. At any point did you connect the modem directly to the NID and post transceiver stats when the issue occurs? That & a post of the stats with the modem in it usual setup may be helpful. Also a new line from the pole to the NID was run for me. After all that; plus an upgrade from a westell 6100F to the 7500 - the resolution was to subscribe to the 3/1 FIOS plan. Bundled with minimal phone plan cost went up  ~ $5 per month. NOte I do not see any obvious links to this plan on the site.
    NOTE your distance from the Central office and age of the copper lines could also be huge factors ... I am about 3 miles and the lines could be 20 + years old or more.

  • High/Low Download Speeds

    This seems to be a usual pattern for me when dowloading large files.
    All speedtests are unreliable and I don't see them as a suitable way to truly measure your speed.
    I get much more accurate speeds whilst downloading.
    Using the HH3(wired of course). Should I contact the mods?

    Try downloading a file from here and see if it's stable.

  • My Take on the Reception and Slow Download Speed Issue

    I seriously believe that the reception problems are a result of something that AT&T has done... Here's why. I started having issues with reception variation and very slow download performance BEFORE the release of iPhone 4 or iOS4. I went to AT&T and got a new SIM. No improvement. I complained at the Apple Store about the variable reception, and the fact that when downloading, the phone got extremely hot to the touch. Because I have been a good Apple customer, the Genius replaced the phone. No improvement. I only upgraded to iOS4 after getting the refurbed "new" phone-- the new OS hasn't really done anything for me other than shorten my battery life..... I am getting pretty tired of sitting in one physical spot, and watching my signal strength go from 5-bars 3G to 1-bar EDGE to "no service" in the span of a few minutes.... Somebody had better do something about this issue, or it's back to Sprint with the new HTC Evo 4G..... Never had reception issues with them!!

    It could be a bit of a design flaw but it could also be affected by iOS4.. any phone with an ariel when hold against skin makes the signal drop period! The only reason its more news worthy is because its actully part of the case.
    It certainly does need fixing but a software update could help improve it for both iphone 4 and 3G/3GS. Ive heard the older models have been suffering this too.
    The reception issue didnt really bother me that much I hold it naturally in my right hand and I dont get a signal issue mainly because I noticed my finger doesnt make contact with the space between the two antennas but then if I apply a finger over the space seprating the antennas the signal does indeed drop its like the two seperated antennas cancel eachother out.
    But I know having to buy a case is a bit stupid when it should work without it but for a phone that cost 500-600 why the **** wouldnt you want to protect it?
    Personally I love the phone the camera is awesome especially the quality of the front facing camera it looks amazing as good as the 3 mega pixel camera on the 3GS.
    The best thing though is definatly the retina display, it looks beautiful. The main thing I liked about the screen tho wasnt the shapeness and quality but the fact that I found it hard to tell the difference between the black colour of the case and the blackness of the screen especially when watching a video with the black bars on the sides of the video,the contrast ratio alone is pretty epic.
