Hi Sanjay,
refer to the below link, it should answer your query:
Re: Discontinuation Indicator - Need Guidance
In addition to the above details:
In material master for the material which is being discontinued, in MRP-4 view you need to maintain discontinuation indicator, effective-out date & Follow-up material.
If you need any additional info, revert.

  • Discontinuation indicator and follow up material.

    Hi,
I am facing the strange issue for which i need your expertise. The requirement is like:
    1. "X" material is discontinued and "Y" is as follow-up in two plants A & B. Discontinaution group and follow-up group has also been assigned in the BOM.
    2. Now The client want to reverse the settings . means "Y" should be discontinued and "X" should be follow-up in both plants A & B.
Now I have removed the discontinuation indicator and follow up material from "X" in both plants. But when I am going to discontinue the "Y" material and putting " X" as a follow-up material, The system is giving the message "The specified follow-up material results in recursiveness
    Message no. M3609
    Diagnosis
You have entered a follow-up material. However, the BOM explosion for the follow-up material leads to the discontinued material, resulting in unpermissible recursiveness.
    Procedure
Enter another follow-up material or cancel the entry.
Please suggest me where I am missing in my settings and what is the reason for this message.

    Dear ,
    Check the following  :
1.Validity of the Bill Of Material or any deletion flag is set in the present BOM.
2.Please check the following SAP notes :
    Note 161742 - Consulting note: BOM recursion/low-level code 999
Note 839879 - Trace 'BOM is recursive'
    Note 139517 - Recursiveness for follow-up materials
    Note 42891 - Recursiveness check
Hope this will help you to figure it out

  • Same discontinue and follow up material?

I have used before this function having a follow up material with indicator 1 and effective-out date. However, this time I have 3 materials A, B, C.
The logic I want to use is the following but I'm not sure if SAP supports this:
    A = discontinue material and B = Follow-up material. Using indicator 1
B = discontinue material and C = Follow -up material. Using indicator 1.
So far, SAP is not allowing me to have B as discontinue and follow-up material at the same time. Any insights?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Lee,
If you try to set the discontinuation for a follow-up material, then error message "Message no. 61224 -Multi Level Discontinuation not suported" will be generated when you try to run MRP. Refer Note 398238 - Error message 61224 for parts provided

  • Trnsfr Rqmnt created via PP for discontinuation mateiral and follow up mat

    Hi,
Production order was created and it has PN A which has been set for discontinuation (1) with follow up material B. The effective out date is in the future.
When generating WM Picklist, TR was created for both parts and issued. On confirmation only the part marked with discontinuation was consumed.
How can i not generated TR for the follow up part?
    Thanks
    Jithin

In the production order components details, there is a column for Discontinuation of the components.
If you do not want the TR to be generated for follow up material, then in the material master(MRP 4) view of the parent component remove the followup material first and then uncheck the Discontinuation column in the order.
If you want to discontinue the parent component from now with a followup material put "5" into the column it.It also has a option of simple discontinuation as "1" where in TR for the followup material will not be generated.

  • Discontinuity and Follow-up Materials for Finish Goods

    Dear all,
We have used for a long time the Discontinuity functionality and Follow-up Materials for Raw and Packaging materials (components in BOMs).
We would like to use the same functionalities for Finish Goods, but after setting fields in MRP4 View, it seems not to work as it did for components.
Is it possible to reproduce the same effect in Finish Goods as we had with components, i.e., use some kind of Discontinuity and Follow-up materials for Finish Goods?
We currently work with R/3 V.4.7.
Thank you all in advance for any support.
    Best Regards,
    Alberto

    Dear Alberto,
If my understanding is correct then this discontinued material concept works only for the components and not for the finished
    product during MRP.
    Discontinuation Data Use
In MRP, the discontinuation functionality is used to transfer dependent requirements of a component to one or several follow-up
materials, if the requirements are no longer covered by stock. You can also define a follow-up material in the bill of material.

  • Process Order is not picking the follow-up material

    Hi Gurus,
We have changed a BOM by discontinuing a component and giving a follow-up material with the valid from dates as 18/5/09.  and then MRP is run on that nignt  ( mrp job set to run daily in the back ground). and on 19/05/09 a Process Order is created from the planned orders genereated by the MRP run.
now, we found that the new componenet (follow-up) is not copied into the process order, but the old compomemt (discontinued) is removed.
MRP parameters are correctly defined (Planning mode is set to 2) .  Please let me know if we are missing anything.
    Thanks,
    N

    Hi
Pl ensure that the Following requirements have been met before you can use the discontinuation functionality:
    1) Both materials must be planned using MRP.
    2) The base unit of measure of the follow-up material must be the same as the base unit of measure of the discontinued material.
    3) You must enter discontinuation data for the discontinued item and follow-up data for the follow-up item.

  • Nested Material Discontinuation and follow-up possible?

    Hello Experts,
We have a scenario where we have Material A, Material B, and Material C.
We'd like to set to the discontinuation flag on Material A and have it follow-up with Material B.
We'd also like to set the discontinuation flag on Material B and have it follow-up with Material C.
We can get a 1-to-1 relationship working properly but adding another material to the mix gives us an error message stating that the material is already a follow-up material.
Is there any way around this?  We have several older revision material that we'd prefer to use up before continuing on the active material.
    Many thanks,
    ~Adam

    Hi Adam,
have you found solution for your issue?? I have the same problem. I've even tried put deletion flag for component A but no results.
maybe somebody else has any clue how to deal with it??
i'm looking forward for any help.

  • Cost-Roll take follow-up material upon discontinuation effective-out date ?

    Dear Expert,
If we use discontinuation/follow-up material, during Cost-Roll (CK11N), SAP will take default cost from discontinued material even if follow-up material is effective.
<b>How to make SAP take cost of follow-up material after/on effective-out date ?</b>
    <b>Example :</b>
    Parent "A" contains component "B" qty 3, to be follow-up with component "C" upon discontinuation of "B" on effective-out dated 1st Nov'07, and like-wise to take std cost of "B' before 1st Nov'07 cost-roll.
Thus, when I roll cost in December, I hope SAP would calculate for std cost of A to include std cost of "C" (for cost-roll after 1st Nov'07).
    <b>Setting :</b>
    <u>Material Master of "B" MRP4 view :</u>
    - Discontinuation Indicator = 1
    - Effective-out date = 1st Nov'07
    - Follow-up Material = "C"
    <u>BOM of Parent "A" :</u>
    - Component "B" indicate discontinuation group "A1"
    - Add component "C" and indicate follow-up group "A1".
    <b>Thanks for your guidance !</b>

    Hello,
We are having the same issue: is a BOM for costing the only way to handle this ? Controlling dept. here fear they wouldn't be maintained as accurately as the production ones (and they are right). We were also thinking to set the phased out materials (B in your example) as cost irrelevant when you add to new material in the BOM...and start costing the father (A in your example) directly with the new component. I would appreciate a lot to hear other examples of dealing with this issue if anybody has.
    Thanks a lot,
    Olivier

  • Follow up material - old material's stock goes down and up

    Hello,
I have a question related to Follow up material. Lets assume that material A is to be replaced by material B, this is specified in the MRP4 view. In the field Eff.-Out an estimate of when the last unit of material A will be received is given in.
If material A's stock drops down to 0 then material B should kick in, but what happends if afterwards material A's stock goes up again and then both material A and B are in stock. Will SAP notice material A's stock level and use it?
    Please advice! Thanks!

If you don't know the "Effective-Out Date" (MARC-AUSDT) [because your stock situation is always changing), don't define it in material master. System will try to ramp down the stock of old material first and use the new one after that.
However, you should take measures to prevent increasing the stock from the old material. In the system you can block it for purchasing as it was told you already.

  • Discontinued parts - how include fixed receipts??

In the MRP 4 view , we can set Discontinuation indicator for one material ,and defined the follow-up material.
And the system will transfers the dependent requirements in materials planning to the follow-up material if they are no longer covered by warehouse stocks.
In standard SAP system , When discontinuing parts, the system does not include fixed receipts such as order proposals or production orders if they are after the effective-out date. The system issues the "Please cancel and Receipt" after effective-out date exception messages in Stock/Requirement List  (MD04 View)
But we now indeed need the system to include fixed receipts, that is affter the last fixed receipt ,the discontimuting parts begin to take effect!
How to do this? How discontinuing parts include fixed receipts??
    Thaks for any replay!

    Hi Fei Liu,
The thing is rather simple; the idea with discontinuation is that from a certain date on we don't want to procure material A anymore, but B instead. Nevertheless, if there's any stock left from A I want to use it first.
In this situation, if somebody manually creates a fixed procurement element, like purchase or production order, the system will only create an exeption message for the planner, since by the normal course of the process this should not have happened.
If you have this situation happening a lot, the question is then if you're using the right functionality for your business case.

  • Discontinued parts with MRP type VB

We have scenario as below :
    1.       We have material A with stock 100, open PO 50.
    2.       The material A is now planned to be phased out by replacing it with a new material B
    3.       Material A had MRP type VB now we will change it to ND
    4.       Material B will have MRP type VB
    5.       So when we run MRP for materil B it should consider stock of material A & Open PO of Material A for calculation during the MRP run and the new requirement calculation should be
    Example :
Material B is set up with RO point 100 and max stock of 150
So when we run MRP for Material B even though stock for material B is zero it should not generate any new requirement as stock & open PO of material A exists.

    Hello
Please take a look on the following note, which explains the general restrictions of the discontinuation process:
    43636 - Discontinued parts
The note provides the following explanation regarding the MRP type:
The material is planned using an MRP procedure, for example, MRP type PD.
Therefore, since you are using MRP type VB, which uses a reorder point procedure, the discontinuation will not happen and your system is working as designed.

  • Discontinued parts in BoM explosion reports

I am having difficulty with the BoM explosion reports (CS11-13, and CSP1-3), in that they seem to take no notice of discontinuation.  In particular we have some assemblies which are discontinued, and replaced by alternative parts with a different sub-assembly BoM.  It does not seem possible to explode through the new BoM - the reports appear to continue to use the obsolete assembly.
Am I doing something wrong?  It would seem clear that the reports should explode the BoM through the new assemblies, particularly if there is no stock of the obsolete part.
Is there an alternative way to get a BoM explosion report which does take note of the discontinuation data?

    Hi,
In my opinion discontinuation is considered only during MRP run (planning) and has nothing to do with BOM reports (CS03, CS11, CS12, CSMB, etc).
    SAP online help:
If this indicator is set, the material is defined as 'to be discontinued'. The material is then discontinued in MRP. MRP transfers dependent requirements that are no longer covered by stock of this material to the follow-up material.
So, I think you won't see the follow-up material in BOM reports. Even if you maintain the discountinuation in BOM I think you cannot see the actual sitruation in BOM reports (you will see both follow-up and discontinued material).
I hope I'm mistaken and this is a solved issue in SAP.

  • Difficult question?? Discontinued Parts with replace function????

    Hi Experts
In our company ,there is a requirement very emergent , as follow example:
In the BOM of material CDE, there is a component material A.
And for some reasons(for example: product development with new technique) ,we want to replace
material A with material B in the BOM. And because the stock of A in the warehouse is not zero,so we
want to continue use material A for a period.
And when the stock of A in the warehouse is zero 0 ,means that A has use out, we want to the SAP system automatictlly replace material A with material B in the BOM.
I konw I can use "discontinued Parts" , but with "discontinued Parts",the system only can transfer
all the dependent requirements of the discontinuation material  to the follow-up material, not replace the  discontinuation material with the follow-up material in the BOM really!
We want with "discontinued parts", the system can replace the discontinuation material with the follow-up material in the BOM really ?
How to achieve this?? Or if there is some other functions can achieve this??
    Thanks for any reply!!

    Dear Fei,
    What's your exact doubt?
If you want to stop using a component from a certain date and instead you would like to replace the
same using another followup material which has the same unit of measure, then you can do the
necessary settings in MRP4 view of the material master.
One more concept is alternative Item concept, where in some period material A will be available for some
period and in some other period B may be available and in sometimes a combination of both will be
    used.
Then in that cases in the BOM an alternative item group will be created to combinae these 2
components along with their priority, usage probability and strategy.

  • Discontinued parts get no function in Plan order

    Dear experts :
         my  Problem is:
When i creat the production order , the requirement of follow -up group replace the discont. group. but when i creat plan order,  it does not work, even after i run MRP,MPS.(Creat the PR for part "a").
and when i tranferred the Plan order to production order, it works again.
        My scenario is:
I set the discontinuation indicator:(1),  followed parts (b), effective-out date(in the past) in master of main item(a) for discontinuation.  and matained the Discont. group(a,a1,a2 total 3parts),Follow-up group in BOM(b,b1 total 2parts). and the mrp type, units of  these 5 parts are same.
now part 'a' still have some stock, but are reserved.
Can you kindly tell me the reason?
         Tks.

  • Discontinuation part management

    Dear all,
I need to manage the following case.
A material M1 is replaced with a follow-up material M2 only in one Bill of Material and we neet to transfer dependent requirements for a material component M1 that is no longer in stock (in sufficient quantities) to a follow-up material.
    Can you help me?
    Regards
    Flavia

    Hi,
I think once you define the discont indicator and follow up matl in material master for component M1 in MRP4 view , then the component M1 will be discontinued in all the BOMs and  the dep reqmts will be transferred to follow up matl defined in either matl master or BOM depending on the priority, once the stock of M1 gets exhausted.
By defining discont group for M1 and followup group for M2 in one BOM , your reqmt will be fulfilled.
(Followup matl M2 will override the followup matl defined in Matl master , if its different from M2)
But , in other BOMs also , the component M1 will be discontinued and the dep reqmts will be transferred to the follow up matl  defined in matl master.
