Discoverer 10g and Java 7- Anyone Document Incompatibilities

Hi All,
To provide a clearer picture to my IT steering committee, I am documenting Discoverer 10g / Java 7 incompatibilities.  As a company we are on Java 6 because of our Oracle Apps 12.1.3 implementation (we are not ready yet to make the jump to Java 7 on the apps side).
Anyways, I have done some documentation of issues associated with Java 7 and Discoverer 10g, but I wanted to know if others have done some documentation.
Here is my short list:
-Can not enter text in the "name contains:" field associated with the "Open Workbook from Database" dialog box.
-Can not edit column headings while editing workbooks.
Any other issues people have noticed would be helpful.  I need to build a case for migrating to Discoverer 11g (which is compatible with Java 7).
Thanks,
Patrick

M. Schroeder,
Thanks for sharing your situation.
Of course, trying to use Java 6 on the Discoverer Application Server side and Java 7 on the client side with Plus does not seem/sound like the smartest thing for us to being doing.  Certainly, this is not certified.
Our intentions are to eventually migrate to OBIEE with OBIA, but a migration will be a large project and take some time.  There is hope that nothing needs to be done and everything will be okay in the interim.
Patrick

  • Differences between  Oracle Discoverer 10g and 11g (EBS & Desktop)

We are in the process of upgrading from Oracle Discoverer 10g testing to Oracle Discoverer 11g.
We have had several requests (from functional users) for documentation that might reflect the changes in this release level. Does anyone have relevant documentation that might help explain what has changed so that they can be better prepared.

We are in the process of going from 10 desktop to 11 plus. I do not like it as other end-users I have talked to don't either. In desktop, I could have multiple reports open at one time, move tabs from one report to another so I wouldn't have to rebuild the report again. Also, there are times I have 3 or more sessions of desktop running with multiple reports running in them. In plus, I am limited to one session and one report. That slows down productivity big time. In desktop, exporting crosstabs to excel is more user friendly than plus. For desktop, it will fill in the cells below with the data above it if it changes. In plus, it looks like a pivot table. I have read other posts on how to work around that, but not always functional. Using Dense_Rank() works sometimes depending on how the report is written. IT is researching another way but haven't heard back from the consultants. Or, I will have to modify all my excel files with formulas to do that for me. Also in desktop, I can select all and copy paste the results into excel and all data comes in. The row and column headers, page items and even the title section will paste into excel. Plus only gives you the data, no row or column headers. So I have to export it every time I need the data. I have formatted excel files that all I need to do is copy paste and data flows beautifully. As for organizing and saving reports, desktop is much better. I can save reports out on our network under different folders so I can find them faster by topic. Granted, if that directory is an open one, anyone can change/delete it. In plus, the only advantage of saving it on the database is I can sort and search for reports or users. If you make any changes in plus and then walk away from your desk, plus will shut down after a certain time period. If you didn't save it, you have to start over. Don't know if this is something IT can fix???
As we see it, plus is a step back in technology. I hope someone can change that opinion. Don't know if we are not getting the best support from whoever is working with us (Oracle or 3rd party) or we are missing something???? If so, please share.
    Thanks.

  • Forms 10g and Java 6 - Howto place the oracle .jars?

    Hi,
I would like to compile a sample Forms Java Bean with standalone Java ( not with the JDeveloper IDE )
and the source starts with a lot of import oracle classes in jars.
My java install is like this:
    JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_11
Could you indicate where I should place the Oracle jar files in order to have javac to recognize them?
    Many thanks in advance

    Hi again,
I'm not advanced enough on these topics to clarify.
Things have changed in the meantime here.
At the moment we are looking into using 'web_show_document' with an html page containing javascript.
There is a discussion on the 'talk2gerd.blogspot' that indicates what to set in formsweb.cfg and forms.conf in order to use javascript.
Still getting a browser written as a Javabean to consult entreprise documents from a Forms client would be a nice bonus.
    Many thanks for your help.

  • Discoverer 10g and Cognos

Does anybody have any document outlining differences between capabilities between discoverer and cognos?
How effecting reporting tool is discoverer when it comes to OLTP reporting?
    Thanks

You should check with your Oracle or Cognos sales consultant. Depending on whom you ask you will get an answer weighted towards one vendor or the other :)
What do you mean by reporting? Discoverer is a tool that you can use for both adhoc querying as well as reporting. It also offers integrated reporting against both relational and OLAP data sources, leverages the Oracle database's analytic and BI platform capabilities, is integrated with the Oracle Application Server, offers a quick and easy way to create BI dashboards in Oracle Portal, is the only BI tool to be certified against and work with the the Oracle eBusiness Suite security model out of the box, and lots more...
Of course, if enterprise reporting capabilities are all you are looking for, then I would suggest you take a look at Oracle Reports and the just announced Oracle XML Publisher.
You should also check out product demos, white papers, presentations, documentations, etc... - all available on OTN. Some links are provided below. Finally, you could even try out the software - free (under a developer license), which is more than can be said about Cognos or other vendors that are too scared of letting people even try out their software without first purchasing it.
    Thanks

  • Oracle Forms 10G and Java 7 ?

So, as of 13 February 2013 (https://blogs.oracle.com/java/entry/end_of_public_updates_for) there will be no more updates for Java 6. So does that mean that Oracle Forms 10g (which as far as I know only supports Java 6) applications will have to upgraded to Forms 11g to keep up with the Java updates? So if you are running Forms 10g on OAS (Oracle Application Server) does that mean also an upgrade from OAS to Weblogic?

Looks like there may be an update to fix this issue:
    Patch 14825718
Description      ORACLE FORMS BUNDLE PATCH 10.1.2.3.2
    Product      Developer Forms
    Release      iAS 10.1.2.3
    Last Updated      07-JAN-2013
    From the README for 14825718
    # 11782681 - APPS6 FORMS DO NOT LAUNCH WITH BETA JRE 1.7I found the above information starting here:
Re: Java 1.6 and 1.7 on same computer, which references this: FRM-92095: Oracle Jnitiator version too low
Here's a workaround which is supposed to work without installing the patch, but I haven't had time to try it:
The "Frm-92095" link above also mentions the -Djava.vendor fix but doesn't show the following steps.
After installing Java 7, open file manager and go to the directory below, double-click on this file:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javacpl.exeThis opens a "Java Control Panel" window.
Click the Java tab, then the View... button.
This should open a Java Runtime Environment Settings window with two tabs: User and System.
On each tab, under Runtime Parameters, enter:
-Djava.vendor="Sun Microsystems Inc."The place I saw these instructions claim it works in IE9, Firefox 18.0.2, and Chrome 24.0.1312.57
I have not had time to try yet.

  • Discoverer 10g and Oracle Financials

I am a newbie. Does Discoverer run against Oracle Financials - Project Accounting in particular?
    Thanks,
    Cherie Machler

    Hi,
Yes, Discoverer can run against Oracle Financials. You need to create a Discoverer EUL (End User Layer) that maps to the underlying Oracle financials tables and views and gives a business interpretation of the data in Oracle Financials. You can either use the EUL that is shipped with Oracle Financials Intelligence, create your own or do a bit of both.

  • Discoverer 10g and R12 error - invalid username/password

    Hi all
I have R12 and Discoverer Desktop 10.1.2.1 only (user and admin) on the same Windows machine.
I can connect to Discoverer as the APPS user with no problem, create EULs and workbooks, and see data.
However, I cannot connect as an Apps User. I have copied the DBC file to the Discoverer Oracle home (c:\\oracle\BIToolsHome_1).
I have not updated any opmn.xml files yet as I don't know which ones to update (if any as this is only desktop).
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks
    Alex

Hussein, yes, I completed all the steps. Here is what I have done:
    - Install Discoverer 10.1.2 from eDelivery web site
    - Create secure folder in
    - Copy .dbc file, and name it vis.dbc all lower case.
    - Create FND_SECURE and FND_TOP system variables, populated with <ORACLE_HOME>/secure and <ORACLE_HOME> respectively. <ORACLE_HOME> is C:\oracle\BIToolsHome_1.
None of the above has worked.
I have also set the s_appserverid_authentication to OFF in $INST_TOP/appl/admin/VIS_x2o12.xml and then run Autoconfig on the Apps tier, but this has also not worked.
Can you think of anything else to try?
And can you think why I can access Discoverer with SYSADMIN user?
    Thanks

  • Popup menus in Forms 10g and Java Bean

    Hi all.
What class in Java corresponds with popup menus(not in menu module) ?
I know that oracle.ewt.lwAWT.lwMenu.LWPopupMenu is corresponds with MenuBar's submenu. I can find Buttons, Text Fields, Menu and other components in my Form-Applet, but I don't know how to find popup menus in forms through Java Bean...

    Hello François,
I have created a java bean that dynamically creates a popup by left-clicking on the bean.
              Set_Custom_Property( 'BLOCK.BEAN', 1, 'ADD_ITEM', 'Item' ) ;
              Set_Custom_Property( 'BLOCK.BEAN', 1, 'ADD_SEPARATOR', '' ) ;
              Set_Custom_Property( 'BLOCK.BEAN', 1, 'ADD_ITEM', 'Item one' ) ;
              Set_Custom_Property( 'BLOCK.BEAN', 1, 'ADD_ITEM', 'Item two' ) ;
My problem is the layout. I want to simulate a button. I can't put the bean transparent over a button and I can't simulate a button with the bean.
How can I add the popup functionality to a button and not only to the bean? Or any other workaround?
    Regards Pedro.

  • How to Install Discoverer 10g.

Can some one suggest me how to install Discoverer 10g. What metalink oracle document id that i needs to follow.
1 What are the pre-install step it has.
1.1 Is it required to install oracle database as the part of pre-install. Or Discoverer 10g will automataically install oracle database?
2 what are the system requirements?
    3. Does any patches needs to be applied before installing 10g discoverer?
    2. what are post install steps
2.1 Any registry entries needs to be done?
    Thanks

The best place to begin would be with the documenation library, available at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_17/bi.htm
In particular take a look at Ch 2 About Oracle Business Intelligence installations and OracleAS Infrastructures of the Oracle® Business Intelligence Discoverer Configuration Guide, 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.1) for Microsoft Windows and Solaris Operating System (SPARC), B13918-03, available at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_17/bi.1012/b13918/toc.htm
Information on the actual installation steps are covered in the Oracle Application Server Quick Installation Guides.
For example, in the Oracle® Application Server Quick Installation Guide 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) for Microsoft Windows, Part No B15908-01, look at Ch 7 Installing Portal and Wireless or Business Intelligence and Forms Developer Topology (includes OracleAS Infrastructure), available at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_17/win.1012/quickinstall.1012/quickinstall/quick_install.htm#sthref25

  • Is it possible to run Discoverer 10g non apps on an Applications database

    Hello,
I am currently working with a customer whose Discoverer implementation was originally implemented with Discoverer 3.1.36 before apps mode existed.
It was installed on an Apps database (Financials).
It was then upgraded to 4 - still in non apps mode and all was ok.
However, now they need to upgrade to 10g, and rather than go through all the rewriting of their security etc (they have an awful lot of custom folders etc), they have asked if they can upgrade their Discoverer 4 non apps EUL to Disco 10g non apps.
However, during some preliminary testing, it seems that some views are not returning data - for example, fnd_flex_values_vl.
If they log in to the test env with Discoverer 4, the data returns with no issues, however with Discoverer 10g (and the same user) it does not.
They are logging in with the eul owner both times and this user contains both the Disco 4 and Disco 10 tables in its schema, so the grants etc are identical.
Is there a technical reason that whilst this worked at 4, it no longer does in 10?
    Kind regards

What happens if they log in as an application user (rather than EUL owner) to retrieve data from these VL views ?

  • Forms and Java 7

Hi Forum. I know that there is no version of Forms certified with Java 7, the last post of Michael Ferrant in this thread is very clear: Forms 10g and Java 7 (1.7) problems (lamentably the thread is locked)
On the other side, the Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap (Updated September 19, 2012) states that the End of Public Updates of Java 6 is Feb 2013... but Oracle now owns Java, so it is not really "the other side"
My point is that the gap is adjusted and closing... If we use Forms we can not upgrade to Java 7 ... but in three months, maybe we NEED to move to Java 7 because there will be the only way to be actualized with security updates
Anybody knows what is the official position of Oracle in this matter ?
    Thanks in advance
    Alfonso

As Francois mentioned, Forms 11.1.1.6 is now supported with Java 7. We are also hoping that an upcoming version of 11.1.2.x will also support Java 7. Hopefully details will be released soon.
As for the desupport of Java 6, as long as you are using an Oracle product which has a dependency on any particular java version and that product is still entitled to support, the dependant java version will also remain supported in that case. In other words, because FMw (PFRD) 11.1.1 will be supported until sometime in 2014, we will continue to support the use of Java 6 if and only if it is used in conjunction with that specific FMw release for as long as the FMw release remains in support.
The dates for desupport of Java apply to end-users not using it in conjunction with other Oracle products.
Refer to these MyOracleSupport notes for more details: 952075.1 & 1470123.1
Because date and policies mentioned in this and other forums or blogs are subject to change at any time, it is always a good idea to refer to the official product documentation or contact Oracle Support if you have any concerns or questions. They can provide you with the latest information.

  • Tweaking defaults of Discoverer 10g (Viewer and Plus) login page

Using information gleaned from the Metalink notes referenced below, we've had our admins successfully configure our default Discoverer 10g login pages (for Viewer and Plus) with the following tweaks:
    1) Remove the "typo-prone" entry box for RESPONSIBILITY (on an Apps-Mode EUL) in favor of the subsequent drop-down LOV option to select available responsibilities
    2) Re-order CONNECT TO options to make the more frequently used APPS-MODE option first in the drop-down list, followed by the STANDARD (relational) and finally, OLAP (to be hopefully implemented at some future date)
    3) Re-label CONNECT TO options with terminology more understandable to our end-users in order to better understand choices
We would like, if possible, to further enhance the relative efficiency of the user login experience by making the APPS-MODE option the default selection upon initial entry to the page (the above-indicated re-ordering of the entries didn't appear to affect Oracle's continued default selection of the STANDARD option).
If anyone has any suggestions / tips to accomplish this, we would greatly appreciate your feedback. I should also say, that we don't possess a lot of Java Development skills and therefore would appreciate any directions provided in a "cookbook/recipe" manner similar to those provided in the Metalink documents we were able to utilize for the changes made thus far.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
I would have to suspect that the answer to the question of restricting responsibilities might well be yes.
    Here's one idea:
Because responsibilities come from FND_RESPONSBILITIES, can you write a piece of SQL that positively identifies the responsibilities that are used inside Discoverer? If you can do that, I'm wondering whether a Discoverer logon trigger might be able to set a VPD policy to only allow those responsibilities.
I don't have any time to try it otherwise I would. Is there anyone who can pick this up and run with it to see what can be made to happen?
    Best wishes
    Michael
