Discoverer and OLAP

Do discoverer 9i support oracle 9i OLAP? If I don't want to build OLAP application with BI bean. Because it is too complicated. How can I do that?
Thanks
Winson

Hi
I'm not sure if I can answer all your questions, but this is how we do it. We tried BI beans and found it to complicated to start with, so we decided to use discoverer instead as a start.
I don't think that Discoverer uses the "OLAP part" on the server (this is not my strongest field), but it has the same functionality with drill-down and summaries (creates materialized views or summary tables) we like the functionality we have seen so far. There are also good documentation on these pages (tech-net) with User guide for all the discoverer applications.
Hope this helps. Search tech-net and read about Discoverer and see if this is something you could use.

  • Discoverer and Oracle 9i Olap Option

    Hello,
I have a question regarding Discoverer and OLAP option in Oracle 9i. Is it required to buy OLAP Option
with Oracle9i when using 9iAS Discoverer or can I use it without this option?
As I know Oracle BI Beans make use of 9i OLAP Option and Discoverer Graphs use Graph Component of BI
Beans, so how this situation concerns OLAP Option (I haven't found any information that OLAP Option is required to use Discoverer)?
    Regards,
    Aleksander Miler

    Hi,
Oracle OLAP is a multidimensional database on the top of the Oracle 9i database. It works like Oracle Express(MOLAP server).
Anyway, you don't need to install Oracle OLAP option when you use Discoverer.

  • Oracle DB 10g and BI Discoverer for OLAP - Dimension Attributes

    Hi,
We are using Oracle Database 10g release 1 with partitioning, data mining and OLAP options and Analytic Workspace Manager 10.2.0.1.0A to create the multidimensional objects. For the user dimensions created using AWM we have custom attributes like HireDate, StartDate, Sales Personnel Role etc., For reporting purposes we are using Discoverer for OLAP. In this Discoverer version, I don't see an explicit provision to drag these attributes onto the worksheet. We are only able to filter based on these attributes and capture the measures...
Can someone throw light on this? Also, if there is a possibility to drag these attributes onto the worksheet can that be expounded?
    Thanks in advance!

Again this depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you define an attribute against a dimension it takes very little space as it is not directly connected to a cube and so no data is stored against that attribute.
If, however, you have a 4D revenue cube (product, geography, channel, time) with products attributes COLOR and PACK SIZE and you want to view revenue additionally borken-out by COLOR and PACK SIZE as well as the other four dimensions then your schema will require additional storage space. However, 10g compressed cubes and sparsity options do help to manage the explosion of data points as the number of dimensions increases. This should allow you to easily add attributes as dimensions into your cube.
One thing to remember is that most users start to struggle when confronted with more than 9 dimensions. So although Oracle OLAP can create extremely large dimensional models, users prefer their cubes to have 9 or fewer dimensions.
    Hope this helps,
    Keith

  • How to pass parameter to a Discoverer Plus OLAP Worksheet??

    Hi,
I have used discoverer plus OLAP and portal to develop executive dashboards in my company. I put my date dimension in Page Item of discoverer plus OLAP worksheet to view a specific week/month/year of analysis i.e. Jul-07.
Now I have to open all the worksheets and change the page item value when week/month ends. If it was 'Jul-07' then I have to change it as 'Aug-07'.
In discoverer plus OLAP we can't pass parameters as we can in discoverer relational.
Can someone help me how I can set the new values without opening discoverer worksheets?
    Regards,
    Shahid

    Dear Shahid,
I downloaded the Oracle Application Server SOA Suite 10.1.3.1.0. While installing It gave me two options
    1. Basic Install
Install J2EE server and SOA suite of applications including BPEL, ESB
    and OWSM.
    2. Advance Install (This gives 4 options)
    a. J2EE Server, Web Server and SOA suite
    b. J2EE Server and Web Server
    c. J2EE Server
    d. Web Server\
According to your instructions I need to install it as Insfrastructure, BI and portal. Now can you tell me which option of the install I should select in order to meet the requirements of Infrastructure, BI and Portal.
Because I am very new in this technology so If you can guide to me to get started at least then I can follow the Oracle Tutorial for further training.
Thanks very much in this regards.

  • OracleBI Discoverer Plus OLAP

    Hi
I need to use Discoverer for OLAP. I have installed BI and BI Tools, but I have there only Discoverer, not Discoverer Plus..
I dont understand where can I get Discoverer Plus...
    Please help.
    Thanks
    Marketecka

    Hi Aparna
You're obviously using Discoverer 4i which uses an older method of connecting. In this method you have to supply the full path and file name of the file being used to launch Discoverer on the URL. You have no choice but to run this path. However, you could create a proxy for it.
In newer versions the path and file name are all embedded configuration files within the application server, thus you only have to pass a port and the application name. The system then looks in its configuration files to determine the path and which file to run.
Having to use Netscape rather than IE is one of the oddities of 4i. While the IE connector may well work, it was noticed a long time ago that the Netscape file was far more robust. This is because when 4i was written the version of IE at the time was 6.0.28n pack 1 which could not handle JInitiator very well when called using standard IE commands. Seeing as the IE of the day could run the Netscape commands, the rest is history.
By the way, as a side issue, you need to upgrade ASAP because 4i is about to be desupported. I place a new posting on my blog last night which might help understand the Discoverer versions:

  • Cannot conect to Discoverer Plus OLAP (D4O-1014 error)

    Hello everybody,
On a laptop WindowsXP, 1G RAM, 3GHZ I have installed:
    - oracle database 9.2.0.1.0 upgraded to 9.2.07 (dbname=HOMEDB, sid=SIDHOMEDB, hostname=aspire3000); all 9.2.0.7 OLAP patches are applied
    - business intelligence 10g 10.1.2.0 (and the BI Tools)
    - business intelligence 10g samples version 10.1.2.0.0_c
I cannot connect to Discoverer OLAP.
I try to connect to the sample data using:
    user: scott
    password: tiger

SID: homedb (Regarding the value for SID: my database's sid is sidhomedb, but when I insert sidhomedb as value for SID while connecting to PLUS I receive error: "Insert a valid SID", so instead I insert the dbname: homedb)
I receive the following error: D4O-1014 unknown exception while connecting to database.

  • Differance between Discoverer and BI Discoverer

hi guyz ,am new to ebs and discoverer, one question always bother me what is differance in discoverer and BI Discoverer, according to my understanding discoverer is separate tool where we develop report then link it to BI and BI Discoverer is EBS builtin tool.if am right so what both r oracle product ,if it's also true why we need both ,why not single is enough.thanx

    Hi,
There is no difference. Discoverer is shipped with eBS but it is the same tool (though an older version) as the standalone Discoverer. eBS is also shipped with an predefined EUL and some reports which are integrated into some of the eBS menus. You can write your own reports and create your EUL and add the reports to the menus.
There are 4 Discoverer tools. Discoverer Plus, a web based report writing tool. Discoverer Viewer a web based report viewing tool. Discoverer Desktop, a windows based report writing tool and Discoverer Administrator used for managing the EUL.
You need all these tools to use Discoverer with eBS and they should be downloaded separately from eBS to ensure you have the latest versions.

    Hi all,
Am I correct in thinking that datawarehouse and OLAP style features are only available as an extra option when you have purchased Oracle Enterprise edition?
Are there any OLAP related features that come with Standard edition, or do you have to go the whole hog just to make a basic cube?
    Many thanks

If you mean Multidimensional OLAP cube, then yes it is only available in the OLAP option that extends Enterprise Edition. But few people need that kind of power.
Or do you mean 'cube' or 'rollup' described http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10810/aggreg.htm#DWHSG8648 which os a completely different animal. A LOT of ROLAP capability, including cube and rollup, even exist in Express Edition.

I have more then half decent results with webcache as load balancer, but it still is a round robin (as mentioned before). This means that a session will not be transfered from one application server to the other once the session has been created.
So far I did not discover any benefits of a hardware loadbalancer over webcache, because (here it is again:) you are not able to transfer open sessions from one application server to the next. This has to do with the Oracle Forms architecture. In fact it is still client-server, only with the application server functioning as extra server ;)
