Discoverer and Reports

Hello,
we are evaluating, how we could generate well formated standard reports for printing on standard paper-size. Till now we have built Ad-Hoc Reports with Discoverer Desktop. What would you suggest to generate standard reports based on the ad-hoc-reports built in Discoverer Desktop?
Thanks
Tobias

Boy ... that's an open question.
One thing that I try to setup and enforce at client sites I work at, is to create a Disco User (ie: if using Apps, then an apps user, if using non-apps, then a db user) with a name such as CORP.
Then all reports that will be the 'corp' standard are written using this account. So, in your case, you decide on a corporate standard (ie: pretty title, great logo, column heading colors, exception colors, totals, etc.), and get the owner of your 'ad-hoc' report(s) to share it with CORP. Then CORP checks the validity of the code, adheres to the standards set up and then shares the report NOT WITH USERS, but with responsibilities (in apps) or roles (in database users).
This means that you add users to groups and then when the corp reports are shared with the various groups, you don't have to move usernames in and out of the sharing screen, etc. (and when someone leaves the company, you're not stuck with someone not there anymore once their account's killed, etc.).
Then, as a company, you stand up on a soap box and state that any report that's not a CORP report will not be supported (as you did check the validity of the code when you 'corp'orized it).
This works pretty well and takes time, but gets sites on the right track IMHO.
Finally, running those reports - can do in the scheduler, or using the MS DOS (plus bat files, etc.) to run automatically and post output in html format to a dashboard, etc. - or go whole hog and set up Portals, BIS, etc. and go from there.

I have more then half decent results with webcache as load balancer, but it still is a round robin (as mentioned before). This means that a session will not be transfered from one application server to the other once the session has been created.
So far I did not discover any benefits of a hardware loadbalancer over webcache, because (here it is again:) you are not able to transfer open sessions from one application server to the next. This has to do with the Oracle Forms architecture. In fact it is still client-server, only with the application server functioning as extra server ;)

  • How to Install Discoverer and Reports in same Laptop

Does anyone knows how to install Discoverer 4.1 and Reports 9.1 in the same machine?

    Hi Ricardo,
Not sure of the Discoverer version. Does Discoverer 4.1 come with Oracle9iAS? If yes, just go ahead and install Oracle9iAS, because Reports9i is part of Oracle9iAS.
If in doubt about the Discoverer version, you might also want to ask this in the Application Server General Forum:

    Hello,
We finally started to migrate from Oracle iAs 10g Release 2 to Oracle Forms and Reports 11g Release 2 using Web Logic. I don't see an option to install Discoverer on the server.
    My OS: windows 2008 R2
    Installed Web Logic 10.3.6
    Forms & Reports: 11.1.2.2.0_64 (64 Bit Forms)
How do I install Discoverer Plus in 11g? All I can find is Discoverer 11g Desktop/Administrator to run on User work Station. We were using discoverer Plus in 10g iAS.
    Thanks

  • Discoverer Viewer and Reports

I have some questions about ORA 10g Discov Plus and Reports.
    1. Is it possible to define page items as parameters and use them for an dynamic link? Could it be that the dynamic link parameters are limited to parameters based on columns or rows?
    2. If i define every level of an hierarchy as parameter and use them in an dynamic link, how can i avoid the following situation:
    Report X contain a hierarchy like Region->Country->Town
I have a dynamic link containing these hierarchies as parameters.
If i use the link at region level and did not drill down to country or town then the parameters country and town are filled with the line name and i get no data. If i refresh and delete the line name for these parameters the records appear in the worksheet. How can i get these parameters to be empty, if i don't drill to them.
    3. Reports doesn't recognize the links as it should. If i do not change the report, the links work ok. It opens the second worksheet with the data. If i change a page item or drill to another hierarchy level i get an fatal error (no special code, only fatal error occured, please contact your admin). If i drill down and up again i get the error to. The link only work if i doesn't changed anything.
Anybody got some ideas about these questions?

    Hi Rod,
I got it, and had captured the LOGIN_USER.
    Now the problem is:
I am using a table SECURITY_ACCESS_MV_D to apply security to a user.
I am using the below query in customer folder as:
    select a.emp_id,a.empname,a.salary,a.mgr_id
    from emp
    where salary is not null
    and (emp_id,mgr_id) in ( select distinct emp_id,mgr_id from SECURITY_ACCESS_MV_D where login_user ='HIM'
I am using IN because I have many other column in SECURITY_ACCESS_MV_D, not used in above query which will create Cartesian join if I exclude them in the main query, if I use the simple join in the query.
Now problem is how can I use the LOGIN_USER item (it will come when the certain user will login) in place of 'HIM' ( hard coded value). I want this filter (as mandatory) in the Discoverer Administrator EUL so that it is independent to the user reports.
I can’t find using type of parameters there as in reports we do.
    Hope you got it.
Once again this article will greatly help everybody in security while implementing the OD solution.
    Thanks,

  • Is discoverer  included with forms and reports ?

Can anyone confirm whether Discoverer is included in the forms and reports server installation (10g) or does it require the full application server.
Does it need the infrastructure database ?
    Is there a discoverer forum ? ( I can't find it )

    Kevin,
in 10g R1 in the Forms&Reports-Installation there's only installed, what Forms and Reports need (HTTP, OIC4J, ..). Discoverer can only be installed with the full Enterprise Edition Installation which needs an infrastructure.
This could change in future, but now there's no way around the infrastructure for Discoverer.
By the way: Discoverer Forum is Nr. 56:
    Discoverer

  • Differance between Discoverer and BI Discoverer

hi guyz ,am new to ebs and discoverer, one question always bother me what is differance in discoverer and BI Discoverer, according to my understanding discoverer is separate tool where we develop report then link it to BI and BI Discoverer is EBS builtin tool.if am right so what both r oracle product ,if it's also true why we need both ,why not single is enough.thanx

    Hi,
There is no difference. Discoverer is shipped with eBS but it is the same tool (though an older version) as the standalone Discoverer. eBS is also shipped with an predefined EUL and some reports which are integrated into some of the eBS menus. You can write your own reports and create your EUL and add the reports to the menus.
There are 4 Discoverer tools. Discoverer Plus, a web based report writing tool. Discoverer Viewer a web based report viewing tool. Discoverer Desktop, a windows based report writing tool and Discoverer Administrator used for managing the EUL.
You need all these tools to use Discoverer with eBS and they should be downloaded separately from eBS to ensure you have the latest versions.

  • Need information re: differences b/w Forms and Reports 6i

    Hello,
Hope someone in this forum can help me on this issue (and forgive my naivete wrt techical terms)...the ITS department within my company currently has an Oracle 8i db and an 8i AS. We have Forms (and Reports) 6i currently installed on the 8i AS but have not had need to use those as yet (we are mostly using financial apps). We are looking to upgrade to a 9i db (in add'n to the 8i) and possibly, to a 9i AS as well--and begin using Forms, Reports, Designer and Discoverer. My question is--could someone explain to me if what is commonly referred to as Forms 6i (and Reports, Designer, Discoverer 6i) are currently "bundled" in the Oracle 9i Developer Suite? I guess my (sub) question is: does the 9i Developer Suite have a higher version of 6i (i.e. 6.0.1) than what one would use with against an 8i db on the 8i AS? I see in the literature for Oracle 9i Developer Suite: Oracle Forms Developer, Oracle Designer, Oracle Reports Developer, and Oracle Discoverer (Admin). I've tried going through Oracle documentation but can't seem to find concrete answers.
Thank you very much in advance for anyone who can help me figure this out!
    -Karen

Oracle9i Developer Suite contains the latest versions of Oracle Forms/Reports - namely Oracle9i Forms and Oracle9i Reports - both can work with an Oracle8i Database (see metalink.oracle.com).
Oracle Forms 6i and Oracle Reports 6i are part of the older version of Oracle9iDS known as Oracle Internet Developer Suite. They can work with Oracle9i Database as well as Oracle9i Database.
    Forms 6i works with Oracle9iAS v1.0.2 and Oracle9i Forms works with Oracle9iAS v2.
I hope this clears things for you.

  • All the SQL functions - to use in Discoverer-desktop reporting?

    Hi ,
Can anyone tell me where i can find all the SQL functions, <conditional stmts> etc - to use in Discoverer-desktop reporting?.
    Thx, Sree

    Hi,
I am not quite sure what you mean. You can see all the functions available when you edit a workbook. Create a calculation and select the functions, your custom functions will be under database functions. Conditions are on the condition tab.

  • How to run Discoverer 10g report from unix command line

    Hello Experts,
I am aware that discoverer report can run through command line using "dis51usr.exe /connect username/passward@connection_string /opendb "DISCOVERER.<<report name>> /export xls"".
Can we run discoverer 10g report (stored in database) from server location / unix command line? Is there any command?
    Please assist. Thank you.

    Hi Tamir,
Can you please mention from where we have to execute/run these commands? After setting enviornmental variable, are these commands run from any location or we have to go to particular server location and then execute (ex. from directory BI or else).
    Thank you.

  • What are the DIFFERENCES between Discoverer and BI Publisher?

    Hi,
I was asked by my manager to look into BI Publisher and give a report. Went through and the first thing that came to my mind was Oracle Discoverer.
I don’t see any difference between the 2. Both are end user reporting tools, , with basically the same functions and options, or AM I MISSING something here???
Surprisingly, both Discoverer and BIP are part of Oracle BI EE. So why have 2 products that basically does the same thing in BI EE??
I would appreciate if anybody can enlighten me.
    Thanks & Regards,
    CS

    Hi
Well not really. Discoverer is an end user reporting tool, providing the ability to generate high end reports, typically with a chart and drillable table. BIP is targeted at the other end of the spectrum, where Oracle Reports sits. It has some disco like capabilities but its strengths lie in generating documents e.g. invoices, POs , letters, listing reports, etc. It can also generate electronic formats, EFT, EDI, XML, etc.
In its standalone flavor, it comes as a server component, managing users, report security, scheduling, real time reports, etc.
So, it overlaps a little with Disco, it overlaps far more with Oracle Reports. It the strategic operational reporting solution going forward, its bundled with BIEE. BIEE being the Oracle BI product going forward. I dont think you'll find Disco shipping with BIEE.

  • Difference between "Oracle9iAS Discoverer" and "Oracle9iDS Discoverer"?

What is the difference between "Oracle9iAS Discoverer" and "Oracle9iDS Discoverer"? Thanks!

9iAS is the application server. It is a bundle of software, one component of which is the Discoverer server.
9iDS is the development software. Again, it is a bundle of software, one component of which is the Discoverer EUL administration tool.
9iDS also contains a Windows-only Discoverer client, should you wish to use Discoverer in client-server mode (eg., for your power-power users or for development of very complex reports).
In order to use Discoverer effectively you need to install 9iAS on the server (twice!) and 9iDS on the Discoverer administrator's machine. In this configuration, regular users need nothing more than a modest PC with a decent web browser.
