Discoverer patch
Hi
We had a problem with the discoverer viewer, where the sessions wouldnt stop and reach the max level, so we used a patch 6155500 to kill the idle sessions, it was working fine for a couple of days but not its not working ...........................any advice regarding what might be the problem with the patch?
Thanks

Hello,
General advice, as we should have a look at logs to understand why it is happening, would be to monitor system resources and OracleAS Components. In example, it maybe that OC4J crashes causing discoverer session to be loosed and so not within OracleAS control.
You may want to check the following logs :
$OH/opmn/logs/ipm.log
$OH/opmn/logs/opmn.log
$OH/j2ee/OC4J_BI_Forms/application-deployments/discoverer/OC4J_BI_Forms_default_island_1
Hope this helps,
Best Regards,

Discoverer Patch 3.1.40
We have Discoverer 3.1.36 User Edition installed on about 50 Windows PCs, and the Disc. Admin 3.1.36 installed on my PC and my manager's PC.
We're not ready to migrate to Discoverer 3i, but we think we should install one of the latest patchsets. A support analyst told me that Patchset 3.1.41 has caused some serious problems and that it might be withdrawn from the Oracle website. Is this true?
How about Patchset 3.1.40? Has anyone installed it? Has it proven to be solid?
Does this same patchset upgrade both User Edition and Administrator?There are some issues with 3.1.41. These have only been significant for a small number of customers, but to be on the safe side, we recommend you upgrade to 3.1.40 instead. We have already fixed the 3.1.41 issues and the 3.1.42 release should be very solid.
Hope this helps,

Discoverer Patch Release 2 (9.0.2.53) for Windows
I can't get the response file to work correctly. If I set SHOW_RELEASE_NOTES to false it still shows up. I need to accomplish this install silently. All of the other boolean operators work fine, the release notes is the only window I get. I have tried changing it to SHOW_RELEASE_NOTES_PAGE with no luck. Any ideas?
It seems that it is only possible to start download of two files at a time. If you try to start more, the system hangs up. If you are trying to download the version that is split in ten files, you have to do this one file at a time. If you are trying to download a single file, make sure that this is the ONLY download session that is running on your computer.
Yours sincerely

Oracle BI Discoverer 10.1.2.3
Greetings All,
In order to integrate BI Publisher with Discoverer here are the steps I found:
1. Have access to or have Installed Oracle Application Server 10.1.2.2. Then download and install the one-off Discoverer Patch. Go to the Oracle MetaLink ( http://metalink.oracle.com/ ) site to download patch # 5648158.
2. Have access to or have Installed Oracle BI Discoverer 10.1.2.3.
3. Have access to or have Installed Oracle BI Publisher Enterprise and BI Publisher Desktop, version 10.1.3.3. Note: BI Publisher Desktop requires a current installation of MS Word.
4. Set up Discoverer Web Services and define its authorized users. Then, establish the BI Publisher Security Configuration by using BI Publisher Enterprise Security Center.
I have question about about step 2. I cannot find any info on downloading and installation of Oracle BI Discoverer 10.1.2.3
I found following thread:
Re: How Do I Install Discoverer Plus
and then found Michael's blogs...
"Upgrade to 10.1.2.3
This is not currently a must-have upgrade. and if you have already installed it I urge you to de-install it. This was released as part of Application Server 10g patch set 3 and you are urged not to apply it just yet (click here). When this is ready, which will not be long, it will include all of the bug fixes from 10.1.2.2 CP6 as well as the web services patch 6622352 (see below). Hopefully even the bug fixes from CP7 will be included too."
Is this patch "safe" to install?
Sorry, for the edits ( my mistake in version numbers)
Thanks,
Raman

rxshahHi Michael,
Looks like I need to do the following:
Install Appserver 10.1.2.0.2, upgrade to 10.1.2.2 by applying patch 4960210, apply CP6 6669033, apply webservices patch 6622352.
The patch 4960210, CP6 (6669033), webservices patch (6622352) should be applied on top of full blown appsserver (which includes among other things web disco) or can they be applied on top of Business Intelligence (the version of appserver that has web disco only)? pls see http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/htdocs/101202.html

Oracle 10g Discoverer Reports & export to xls fails for large reports
Hi ,
We have following configurations:
1: RHEL 5.4
2: Discoverer :Version 10.1.2.48.18
3: Oracle10g Apps Version : Version 10.1.2.0.2
Issue:
Most of small reports works fine ....but when large discoverer reports are executed the page
keeps on refreshing for 15-20 hours but no output ....same for export to xls ......
But same reports works fine in oracle9i for same data voulme....
Observations:
When on linux with top command the processes are monitored its observed that discoverer process
dis51ws dies for large reports after 1-2 minutes ...& the page keeps on refreshing but no output....
for 1-2 minutes it consumes 50-80% cpu utilisation then process disappears & cpu 80% idle ...
It seems that as 10g Apps is installed on RHEL 5.4 ...non certfified OS causing an issue...
Can any one adds more inputs in this regards......
we have checked logs : below are log details :

Regards,Hi ,
as per Note: 466697.1 ....its an memory error....& need to increase MaxVirtualDiskMem and MaxVirtualHeapMem
But we already have slowly increased MaxVirtualDiskMem and MaxVirtualHeapMem to below very high values ...but the issue remains same.......
as per note we are getting Logkeys: exceptions discoiv.servlet_exceptions error but
after that we are not getting below error ............
Unexpected error in state machine: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
Hence I presume that its different issue rather than memmory....
Below are pref.txt values..........
CacheFlushPercentage = 25 # Percent of cache flushed if the cache is full. valid values 0 - 100%.
MaxVirtualDiskMem = 9294967296 # Maximum amount of disk memory allowed for the data cache. Should be greater than or equal to MaxVirtualHeapMem
MaxVirtualHeapMem = 4294967296 # Maximum amount of heap memory allowed for the data cache.
QueryBehavior = 0 # Action to take after opening a workbook (0 = Run Query Automatically, 1 = Don't Run Query, 2 = Ask for Confirmation)
Also we have raised an SR & as per SR .............all below settings are tried as per SR except for applying a recent patch....
====================================================================
Discoverer performance is largely determined by how well the database
has been designed and tuned for queries.
A well-designed database will perform significantly better than a poorly
designed database.
Workbook design can also affect query performance.
1. Apply latest Discoverer patch as documented in <<Note:237607.1>>
'ALERT: Required and Recommended Patch Levels For All Discoverer Version'.
2. Increase the maximum JVM heap memory:
In general, the default values for the minimum heap (-Xms) memory and
maximum heap (-Xmx) memory are sufficient.
However, if your organization consistently runs large Discoverer queries
then you may benefit from increasing the maximum heap memory from the
default values.
This is recomended if your users are typically running large queries via
Discoverer Viewer.
Increasing the JVM memory can help to avoid "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError"
in Discoverer Viewer:
Please see <<Note 563960.1>>, Best Practice: Configuring The
OC4J_BI_Forms JVM For
Discoverer Viewer/Portlet 10g Performance And Stability for specific
details.
3. Disable Query Prediction:
Query Prediction provides an estimate of the time required to retrieve
the information in a query.
The Query Prediction appears before the query and consumes time.
Edit the <oracle_home>/discoverer/util/pref.txt on the middle-tier
server and set:
QPPEnable=0
Also set:
QPPObtainCostMethod = 0
4. Uncheck the 'Enable fantrap detection' checkbox.
When the box is checked, every query generated by Discoverer is
interrogated. Discoverer will detect a fan trap and rewrite the query to
ensure that the aggregation is done at the correct level.
Please refer to <<Note:210553.1>>, Oracle BI Discoverer: Fan Trap
Resolution - Correct Results
Everytime for more information on fantraps.
To disable, in Plus go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Fan Trap
settings.
In Viewer go to Preferences and uncheck the box.
5. Disable Materialized Views/Summaries
In pref.txt add parameter:
MaterializedViewRedirectionBehavior = 0
Value equal to 0 ensures that Materialized View (MV) Redirection is
always performed when MVs are available.
6. Improve query performance by optimizing the SQL.
In pref.txt modify/add following parameters:
SQLFlatten = 0
SQLItemTrim = 0
SQLJoinTrim = 0
UseOptimizerHints = 0
If value of SQLFlatten is 1 then Discoverer will merge inline views in
the query SQL where ever possible.
In case of SQLItemTrim, Discoverer will remove unused folder items from
the query SQL where possible and for SQLJoinTrim Discoverer will remove
unnecessary joins from the query where possible.
UseOptimizerHints will add Optimizer hints to SQL if set >
0.Unnecessarily making Discoverer perform these checks consumes
resources and rather than increasing the performance may reduce the same. So unless you feel these checks have to be performed depending on
requirements, assign zero to these parameters.
7. When Discoverer builds a query, Discoverer makes a database security
check to confirm that the user has access to the tables referenced in
the folders. Avoiding this check can save time.
So in pref.txt underDatabase section add:
ObjectsAlwaysAccessible = 1
8. Whenever you are creating conditions, ensure that you match the Case.
This in turn can reduce the time Discoverer spends on changing the Case
and matching.
For example:
option Upper(Department) in (Upper('VIDEO SALES')
9. Ensure that summaries are refreshed periodically in Discoverer
Administrator.
10. Increase the amount of memory available for the Discoverer data cache. Please refer to <<Note 245752.1>>, Explaining Oracle BI Discoverer
Session Memory Management
And Server Cache Settings.
11. Performance may be enhanced by enabling OracleAS Web Cache.

Discoverer 3.1 with Oracle 10g
Hi All,
I want to use Discoverer 3.1 against Oracle 10.1.0.4 Database and Oracle 10.1.2.0.2 Application Server. This is a temporary solution only, since a client urgently needs to run his Discoverer reports. The operating system of the client machines is Windows 2000 and on the other hand, the Discoverer version they want to put in place is 3.1.18. This version is not designed for WIN2K and above.
Discoverer 3.1.18 still runs on WIN2K but the company expects to carry out upgrade to Windows XP Professional. Obviously Discoverer 3.1 is not a solution but they want to use it for a short time. My main question in this respect is if Discoverer 3.1.18 could be run against Oracle 10g.Hi
To be honest I have never tried it. My gut instinct is that it won't work but I could be wrong so you would have to try it and see. The unfortunate aspect about all of this is that Discoverer 3 has been long desupported so there is no way you would get any help from Oracle should things go wrong.
I also have to question your Discoverer release number. If you are on 3.1.18 you are definitely on dodgy ground because this is not Y2K compliant. The release you should be on is 3.1.36. The following posting from my blog lists all of the Discoverer releases along with their correct patch numbers:
http://learndiscoverer.blogspot.com/2006/04/april-2006-oracle-discoverer-patch.html
You may find it useful. If you need to get hold of the 3.1.36 patch you could try raising a SR but I wouldn't guarantee that you will succeed. What's wrong with using the latest 10.1.2.0.2? It has Desktop and Administrator just the same and will work on the 10g database no problem.
I hope this helps

Discoverer/SSO/VPD combination
In this post:
row level security in discoverer desktop
there is a reference to being able to pass the SSO user to the DB query. I'd like to do this for VPD. Can you provide or point to an example/reference that shows the SSO user being passed, preferably in an LDAP environment?Note 275404 on Metalink has information on this.Hi...
I would like to know where i can find this particular patch(9.0.4 discoverer patch.)
Can you please give patch number

Discoverer viewer interface error
We installed the latest patch to Discoverer 4i on a Win2000 server. Discoverer plus works fine but we get the following error in the Viewer: "Session interface incorrect. Expecting version 4.1.13 got version 4.1.10." Has anyone seen this error or know how to fix? Thank you.
This is the reply I received from oracle support in case any else has a similar problem:
This error may come if discoverer patch is not applied correctly. Have you ensured that you have no discoverer process running such dis4pr ,dis4ws ,osagent and oad .
Was your http server shutdown while installing the patch.
IF you have done it all I still suggest you to apply the patch again.
If it does not allow to apply the patch in that case you need to modify your nt.rgs file found %oracle_home%/806/orainst
Identify the line having discoverer version. Search for word in Discoverer in nt.rgs
Except for the documentation version which will be 4.1.33f change all the versions to your old version .i.e to say 4.1.42.0.0
Now save the file and try to resinstall the patch.
Note: Please take back of your nt.rgs file before modifying it.
Before installing the patch ensure the processes listed above are not running. -
Cannot find discoverer portlet in portlet repository (9iAS rel2)
I would like to use discoverer portlet in my portal page. I have already install 9iAS 9.0.2.0.1 + 9iAS discoverer patch (9.0.2.5.3) and also patch 9iDS Discoverer to the same version (all products on Windows 2000). Then register the discoverer provider, it was successfully. But when I tried to add discoverer portlet from my portal page, I cannot find discoverer portlet provider in the repository. This happen without any errors. Any suggestion ?
Try to refresh your Discoverer Portlet Provider. It should do the trick.

Oracle does not provide correct patches!!!!
I have installed 9iAS 1.0.2.2.0 and tried to run the Discoverer patch to upgrade to 4.1.4.2 only to find out that the version Discoverer installed with 1.0.2.2.0 is 4.1.3.3 and that the patch requires Discoverer 4.1.3.7 The problem is that you can not find a patch on Metalink that upgrades from 4.1.3.3 to 4.1.3.7 so that you will be able to upgrade to 4.1.4.2
Is there anybody that can mail me this patch or let me know where I can download it please. The operating system is on Suse Linux Enterprise server.I have to apologise. I found patch 1949194 which fixes this problem. After you have applied this patch you can apply the upgrade patch which will allow you to upgrade to 4.1.42

BIB-9010 Index Out-Of-range Discoverer Plus OLAP
In dialog 'Edit Worksheet', clicked 'Dimensions', expanded 'Available' members and moved all items to 'Selected' members.
Applied and save changes - no error.
When trying to select a member from the dimension, keep getting error:
oracle.dss.d4o.common.D4OException: BIB-9010 Index out of range in metadata cursor for edge, dimension, and index: 2, 2, and -1127087488.
oracle.dss.util.SliceOutOfRangeException: BIB-9010 Index out of range in metadata cursor for edge, dimension, and index: 2, 2, and -1127087488.
What is causing this error since generating it does error out, but vieweing does?There is a Discoverer patch for this issue - 5613003. You can download it from Metalink. I would check the bug listed matches the issue you are experiencing with your system.
Hope this helps.
