Discrepancy in display size between FCE and Quicktime

This whole bloody aspect ratio thing is so confusing to me.
First of all, I shot footage in DV 16:9. Evidently this is considered anamorphic? When I look at the clip data, it says 720x480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, anamorphic. Just for clarification, 720x480 is widescreen and 640x480 is 4:3, yes?
I have my sequence prepared with matching settings, so I know it's not converting aspect ratio. When I look at the footage in the Viewer and Canvas, it looks normal. Then I export a Quicktime movie with self-contained unchecked.
When I look at the resulting file, Inspector shows that it's still 720x480. I open it in Quicktime and Movie inspector still shows 720x480. But the actual image is most definitely not widescreen - it's stretched vertically. I have no bars, either horizontal or vertical. But it's definitely a different dimension than the version in FCE, despite the fact that they both say 720x480.
My ultimate goal is to use iDVD on this. I have chapter markers set. I've tried running the footage through Anamorphicizer. I would like to create a DVD that can play on any tv, which means presumably means letterboxing the footage and creating a 4:3 iDVD project rather than a 16:9 project, yes? But before I get to that point, why is the mov not exporting correctly? And what's up with the dimensions vs actual appearance? I've read all about square pixels but I don't see how that fits in here. So confused.

Ok, now I'm really REALLY confused. I followed your advice and it worked...almost.
I took a small test sample into a new 4:3 sequence and got a nice letterbox. Exported it and ended up with a letterboxed result. Very nice.
So I went back to the original sequence and did the exact same thing - took it into a new 4:3 sequence. In FCE it looks great, just what I want! Letterbox, chapter markers are still in place. Then I exported it, just as with the test. The result - squished, no letterbox. Huh???
I checked the sequences - they're exactly the same, including non-anamorphic. Any ideas why identical actions would produce two different results? The test was a 15-second snippet. The real deal is 1 hour.
Should I be rendering at some point? I'm not, so if I should be, that's a potential clue.

Create a table layout region and under that use 'messageStyledText' for displaying the prompt and use 'messageTextInput' for text field without giving any prompt to that.

Font sizes between Photoshop and Edge - Any Accurate conversion table?

I have been trying to make sense of the font sizes between Photoshop and Edge. It seems that the conversion tables I have found do not actually give the right numbers and I am wondering if there is a table from Adobe that would make it easy to have the right size rather than an approximation.
I prefer to use text in Edge rather than Photoshop for many different reasons one being dynamic text.
For example a font in Photoshop in a 780 x 475 image is 8pt - In Edge, according to conversion tables it should be 11 px but it is totally wrong. It needs to be closer to 30 px to be about the same.
So, Adobe Team, any documentation on that?

By the way, I have to correct the numbers but they still do not make too much sense. The artist gave me a 300 dpi file so of course the px size what wrong. After converting the file to 72 dpi, the font size happens to be 33.33 pt or 40 px which is now way too big in Edge. It looks like the size my just be the same 33.33 pt would be 33.33 px. Is this correct?

First Project - Poor resolution when working between FCE and LT

I've put together a 1 minute sequence in FCE 4 (1920X1080) and it looks great when I export to QuickTime movie.
I then use that movie as a background in LiveType, adding a bunch of titles and graphics.
If I then render the movie in LiveType the rendered movie chokes and skips. If I import it back into FCE and export it back to a QT movie, it looks poor - compression artifacts and the text doesn't look crisp.
Is there a better way to:
1) Sequence and edit my clips (1 min movie)
2) Add tiles/graphics throughout
3) Output to HD format

I figured it out.....
Rather than rendering the movie in LT and importing to FCE, I just imported the LT project itself. Working between the two apps simultaneously, I can position the text and graphics from LiveType, save, then instantly see the results in FCE.
Everything is looking crisper....

Display alternates between dark and bright

I have several issues but I suspect somehow they are all related as they all began about the same time, within about an hour of each other, which was maybe a week ago.
Periodically, my display slowly cycles between dark and bright. Sometimes the display will suddenly go to sleep on it's own, usually after a period of about 20 seconds of me not doing something and when I wake it up the display is quite dim. Other times the computer goes to sleep (not just the display) requiring me to log back on. I use password for startup. I open the display settings after log-on and the brightness slider has somehow moved way over to the dark end (left). I slide it up to where I like it and soon it does it again all by itself again after a very short period of inactivity. I have noticed that if I leave the brightness control alone (dim) without readjusting it it seems to take longer for the other issues to develop. I would normally place the brightness slider just under half way up. My sleep time settings are currently: computer - 1 hr, display 15 min. That is plugged in which is pretty much the only way I ever seem to use it ... plugged in.
Another issue is an occaisional rapid beeping. It's the same low beep that you hear when you try to do something stupid and the computer is telling you you've made an error. The difference is this is a long, unending string of rapid beeps; I'd estimate maybe 15 - 20 beeps per second. The sound does not stop. I have to mute the speakers to shut it up. I have not yet been able to determine a recognizable pattern of common variables for when this happens. The other day when the computer went to sleep by itself and I woke it and tried to input my password and I saw that the input bar was filled with black balls as if it was remembering my password which I did not like but when I hit enter the logon dilaog box shook, the entry field emptied and refilled on it's own. I held the backspace key for several seconds and nothing seemed to happen. I used shift/command/arrow to highlight the entire string and deleted it but as soon as the characters were deleted I saw the input line quickly fill back up again one ball at a time at roughly the same rate as the beeps. Then it occured to me that the beeps were similar to those you would hear if you held a key down and filled an entire entry field with a hundred of a particular character and was still holding down the key long after the field was full. My first thought was that a key was stuck down. Not so. Each and every key is free to move and functions normally.
Last night I closed the lid to put the computer to put it sleep before I went to bed. About 3 hours later I was awakened by the sound of the rapid beeping. I got out of bed and went to the computer and opened the lid to find the same input line black balls issue but this time it was accompanied by the beeping and the display was also cycling between bright and dim. As it was the middle of the night I killed the machine by holding down the power button and forcing a shutdown. This evening I decided to do the upgrade from 10.9.1 to 10.9.2 hoping that might help but it did not. I have not heard the beeping since the upgrade but the display is still cycling, which was the first thing I noticed when all of this began.

Turns out it may have been sofware issue. I suspected software anyway because rebooting could temporarily cure it. I spoke to an Apple Service and Support person on the phone. She went through a fairly lengthy process with me to evaluate the machine and determine if it was hardware or software related. The results of those steps did not lead her to any concrete conclusions but she was able to hear the beeping issue happening in real time. She guided me through the steps of O/S recovery and now several hours later the machine appears to be functioning as it is supposed to. Typically the issue(s) would show up after maybe twenty minutes or a half hour after a hard boot. I am to monitor the thing for the next week or so watching for any signs of the issues slowly returning.
Here's keeping my fingers crossed.

Same colors display differently between Illustrator and Photoshop

Hi there,
I would love to know why the same colors display differently between my Photoshop and Illustrator apps (CS3). For example, a logo will display much darker or more vividly in Illustrator than in Photoshop, same file, same colour values. My color settings are synchronized from Adobe Bridge to North American Pre Press 2. I've opened the logo file in RGB color mode, in both apps. It would be so helpful if both apps displayed the colours consistently.
Any suggestions on how to do this would be wonderful!

Hello Bobbie,
I am using CS3 too and let me tell you that this Illustrator version is the worst ever. You best bet is to take the "Eye Drop" tool and select the Photoshop element to match the color.
CS4 also have problems when handle placed items. Sadly I can tell you that CS2 is more reliable than CS3 and CS4.
Not even if you use Pantone colors will match, Illustrator will change the colors making it impossible to match. "Adobe Quality"

same program run in ecc6 output is same but ther is no icons like ecc

Yes you could find some new icons in between ECC and ECC 6.0 but I dont think there is lots of difference between these two, though you have not mentioned the program name it is hard to give you the correct reply on that, but yes in some standard program cases you may find this kind of problems.

Mailbox effect between shared and quicktime video output

Here are some screenshots from a movie I'm making. You'll see the kid doing the limbo in the clip at the centre of the top image is mailboxed with black top and bottom. I've added some type to the frame (lower portion of bottom screenshot) and it looks like it'll fall outside the image, but when I export the movie as a medium shared video, it turns out fine (upper part of bottom screenshot). Make sense? I can't figure out why this is happening and where the edges of my frame are. The problem gets serious if I export to Qucktime because the mailbox effect shows while it doesn't show in the medium shared video output.
Any advice appreciated.

Hi this worked for me... After you've changed the stuff within the browser close it out completely, Open the actual QuickTime on your PC edit-preferences then you will see both player and QuickTime separately. You need to uncheck automatically start play in both preferences, in the second one it has a browser tab when you click that the default is set checked for automatically play in browser uncheck that go through each tab in both preferences and make sure autoplay is not enabled anywhere, Good luck Rhondar35

File size deviation between Finder and Quicktime

Today I encountered a weird phenomenon:
Some Quicktime .movs show different filesizes in the finder (e.g. 69,3MB) than the same clip has in Quicktime (Command-I says 34,71MB)
This happens if the clip was opened, truncated and saved (under the same name).
It still occurs after the computer was restartet.
Any idea what this may be?

According to the QuickTime help, after you delete parts of a movie, the file size stays the same until you choose File > Save As and select "Save as a self-contained movie". I'm only guessing, but this may be to enable the deletion to be undone, even after the file has been saved.
I guess the Finder is reporting the raw file size, whereas QuickTime is reporting the size of the edited clip.

Blank size between Sun and Microsoft

i use JTextPane to input and display data in gui,after save its data into database,i will output data into rtf file which will be opened by word. my problem is: i found Java's blank size is not equal to Microsoft's blank size,so cause the data which aligned as i request in JTextPane cannot align in word file. anyone can help guide what's difference between Java's blank size and Microsoft's blank size, what's their scale?

Bizarre SMPTE display in Logic 8 and QuickTime display of burn in TC

I'm getting a bizarre divergence between my QuickTime window and Logic 8. I stopped Logic at an even bar, set it's smpte view offset to match the on screen burn in timecode of a QuickTime movie. I started advancing the play head one frame at at time, and the QT, curiosly, advanced two frames while Logic advanced one. Both are at to 29.97df. As I jump around to various locations, the divergence can get to as much as 25 frames. This certainly makes for some worry for the editor inserting my music in the film. The key command for advance one frame seems to be broken and will only advance or retard two frames at a time. The readout in the transport is totally off with the film......and yet everything seems to play fine. Just the visual timecodes are facocta.
Anyone else notice this?

Just for yuks I tested this out in LP7 (didn't have a 29.97d movie so instead I used a 24 fps movie). The nudge commands worked fine there. So this one is a "hmmmm...."
I'd like to suggest that you open a new session and try those commands; see if the behavior is the same. Then, load up only the movie file, set your offsets, and try the commands again; see if the behavior is the same.
Finally, I'd suggest that if the problem continues that you forego Logic's SMPTE display and pop (or trim) your files to the picture's timecode burn. That way you will be 100% safe. But... regardless of this problem, in any and all cases of trimming or popping cues for delivery, make sure that you trim (or pop) to the leading edge of the frame. Don't go by Logic's SMPTE counter, i.e., when it says you're at 01:00:30:05.xx, for example, you may or may not be on the leading edge of the 5th frame. You should scroll the bits value backwards until you see the previous frame, and then scroll it forward until the actual first frame of your cue comes into view. Repeat this process once or twice to ensure that your SPL is located at the leading edge. Then trim or pop.

Display issues between Pro and reader

My colleague and I are having issues getting a form we created to display as designed in reader.
The editable pdf displays as designed in Pro. When we open it up in reader and begin to type in a field, the text displays in an extremely small size. Once you click off the field, it will enlarge the font to the desired size. We are obviously overlooking something but I'm not certain what that is.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

27" apple cinema display switch between mac and pc

I have a 27" ACD with a standard mini display port and USB connector for my macbook pro. I'm going to bulid a PC (for gaming) and I'd like to connect the mintower PC to the 27" ACD. Is there a product that will allow me to switch between the MBP and the PC? If possible I'd also like to have the sound run through the switch as well.
One other thing to note - I'm considering the GeForce GTX 560 Ti graphix card, the card does not have a mini display port, it have two dual link DVI's and one mini HDMI.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Simple, the gaming PC must have a GPU with minidisplayport output. Then use Kanex snap X switch to do the switching between the PC and the Mac.

IBooks display differences between iOS7 and iOS8

I work for a music publisher where we build reflowable ePubs that mostly contain music and embedded audio/video files. It is critical that we deliver an eBook that keeps a/v controllers with the title, credits, music etc. and maintains proper spacing throughout. It's critical not only for the overall look but for the readability and usability of the musician. Clearly a user can increase the font size and destroy any well designed layout for ePub, but if the ePub is designed properly, targeting median font settings, our layouts are consistent from tablet to tablet.
The recent release of iOS 8 has brought changes to iBooks once again and how it displays content. I've noticed differences with A/V controllers displaying more margin, troubles controlling the alignment and overall width of player. I've also noticed additional margin at the top of each "page" in iBooks which wasn't there in iOS 7.
These changes may seem minor but they completely break our layouts. I have been trying to correct these issues using CSS, but haven't had any luck. What's even more frustrating is that iBooks for Mac on Mavericks doesn't have these issues. In fact, the audio controller has a completely different look and responds to CSS as it should. These small issues are causing major problems for us because we have thousands of ePubs with audio at Apple.
We've seen changes in the past with our ePubs when iOS 6 went to 7, so we were expecting things like this to happen. But because our CSS modifications don't seem to work on the iOS side, I'm beginning to think that this is a bug or that there are new issues to contend with when developing ePubs for iBooks. If there have been changes, it would be great to have specs from Apple that would help identify what is happening within iBooks. It would also be great to have development tools for iBooks like there are for all modern browsers today.
If anyone knows anything about these issues or has information as to where I can find the answers, I would be most grateful.

This has been my headache since day one and a complete swing and a miss by Apple. I haven't been able to get ANYTHING I have not explicitely purchased from iTunes to sync in iBooks across device.
For example: If I load an ePub or PDF into iTunes and "manually" add to a device, this works just fine.
However, if I open a PDF file on my iPhone into iBooks, it doesn't show up in any of my other devices, including the new iBooks on my iMac with Maverick. it doesn't matter which device it's added, nothing syncs if it's not purchased from iTunes.
Please, someone make me a liar and tell me I've completely missed something.
Apple: Why or why can't I add PDF files to iBooks on my iMac and have them automagically show up in the collection I created on all my devices? Because I didn't purchase them from you, you say? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Then don't let me add it in the first place and stop advertising "my content anywhere on any device" because this has been broken from day one.

Change display order between second and third display

I have a MacBook Pro Retina 15" (2012) with 2 external displays (Dell 27 and Samsung 24). I use the Dell as main display. My problem is with FCPX. I want to use my Samsung 24 as Second Display to see my video material in it with the option "Show events in second display", but OSX set the macbook display as second and the samsung as third. So, I only can see the events in the macbook and the timeline in the Dell. (Unless I close the Macbook. losing one display. I'd rather keep the 3 to use one of them (macbook) with a Finder window).
Anyone can help me with this or is impossible to change teh order between the macbook display and the Samsung 24?

Another way to put this: in my original instructions, do step 1 after steps 2 and 3:
(Start with FCP in single window mode, in whichever display, it does not matter)
2) 1) Open System Preferences->Displays, click on "Arrangement"
3) 2) Drag the visual representation of the Menu Bar to the display that you want to use as "second" display in FCP X.
1) Move FCP X's single window to the display you want to use as your main display.
4) In FCP X, choose to put the viewers events on second display.
