Discs burn but do not verify...

Lately, on my powerbook when I burn discs I have them go through the "Burning" phase and then into the "Verifying" phase the disc is spit out.
At that time, an error comes on the screen saying [something to the effect of] that it could not verify and should be discarded. I have tried many discs, by many manufacturers and same results.
Then I put the same disc in, after the "Discard" message and the information I burned is there. Seeming without a problem.
Which leads me to ask: What is going on with this? Does the verification mode really matter? How do I get this message to never return?
I had this problem in Panther, and it continues now in Tiger
Thanks,
Alec

Funny thing, I ran disc warrior and this has not happened again.
Thanks Zach, for your help, If I have this situation again I will try your way, good thing I have an external. I am marking this one solved.

  • Keep getting Disc Burner or software not found when trying to burn a CD

I am not able to burn a playlist to a CD and get an error at the top of Itunes window "Disc Burner or Software Not Found". I have been able to burn CDs in the past with this same computer but had some issues with songs in itunes. Support had me uninstall Itunes and reinstall. I have also uninstalled the device in the device manager and re-installed it. I really don't know what to try except to ask for help here. I would appreciate any direction I can get. I have a Dell desktop XPS running on Windows 8.

    Hi daurel,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you receive the error "Disc Burner or Software Not Found" when trying to burn CDs. You mention that you've already tried removing and reinstalling iTunes, and other drivers, and these are good steps.
If the situation continues, be sure to try the tips in this article:

I kept hoping that it would be fixed in an update but alas the problem has persisted. Strangly I noticed in the diagnostic  it says the the user in not an administrator which is odd since I am logined in as an Admin. Can anyone help? Here is my diagnostic:

  • Help please - iTunes disc burner or software not found... with full troubleshooting details

In iTunes 11.1.3.8 on my Windows 8 HP Laptop, when trying to "Burn Playlist to Disc", I get the Burn Settings window "E: hp DVD A DS8A9SH", then I select MP3 CD and click "Burn", I unfortunately get the dreaded iTunes "disc burner or software not found...". I think this is the second time this has happened (first time I think a simple reboot fixed it), and I assume because iTunes was updated this issue came back again and I cannot burn MP3 cds anymore because of it!
I've followed all steps outlined in this support article "iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install" (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2308)
Solution 1, no updated firmware was available for dvd drive.
Solution 2, not relevant because those files were not present when I looked for them.
Solution 3, I'm familiar with regedit and did exactly what the step by step instructions told me including rebooting multiple times to completely remove Gear drivers/keys, installing the new Gear driver files with their official setup file "For 32-bit and 64-bit systems:" from http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php (and gave another reboot just in case) and opened iTunes at the very end of the entire process.
Still getting the dreaded "disc burner or software not found..." error when trying to burn a playlist to a CD. The weird thing is when I click Burn playlist to a CD, I see the DVD drive "E:  in the next prompt which asks for Data CD/MP3 CD, Audio CD.
So I clicked on Help > Run Diagnostics, selected "CD/DVD Drive tests" only and clicked "Next".
Window says "To begin the test, please insert a prerecorded audio cd..." so I did that and clicked "Next".
Under "Choose an optical drive to test:", the drop-down menu only shows "[Choose a Drive]", no other options. Under "Optical drive:" it says "No drive chosen for testing.", and I click the "Next" button.
Here are the diagnostics output I got:
Microsoft Windows 8 x64 Home Premium Edition (Build 9200)

I'm extremely confused as to what to do next. I was thinking I should try reinstalling iTunes but I'm not sure that would even work and I'm so paranoid about installing it correctly and referencing the right existing library files that I'd like to see other suggestions first.
Any help from the community or Apple would be tremendously appreciated and I would be glad to do more testing and provide more details. Thanks!

    Hey tfrith,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are having issues burning a playlist to disc in iTunes for Windows. The following article provides three probably solutions, I have outlined them below:
iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2308
    Solution 1
Check with your manufacturer to see if there are updated software drivers for your optical drive. For more information about updating the firmware of your CD or DVD drive, see article HT3206.
    Solution 2
    1. Launch Windows Explorer.
    2. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\.
    3. Check to see if either of the following two files are present. These files from a third-party software vendor are not supported by Windows and can cause driver conflicts with optical drives:
              - afs.sys
              - afs2k.sys
    4. If either of the files in Step 3 are present, move them out of the system32 folder. You should keep these files stored somewhere on your hard drive, as some of your older peripherals may require them. If you need the files in the future to use a device, you may move them back into the system32 folder temporarily.
    5. Reboot Windows.
    Solution 3
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Manually remove the GEAR driver software using the steps found here under the section "Removing GEAR Drivers."
    3. Remove any stand alone GEAR software installers from the Programs and Features control panel, if present.
    4. Install the updated GEAR driver.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Has anyone seen this error message: "Disc burner or software not found"?

Two weeks ago I successfully burnt a CD of Word files. Yesterday I put in a blank DVD and got a formatting error message. I didn't think too much of it (thought I had bad discs).

I suspect this is not good.

  • When i try to burn  from library disc burner and software not found message appears

when i try to burn a disc from library the message disc burner and software not found appears.

    Hello,
I am having the same problem - "Disc burner or software not found" and I can't create a new CD from iTunes "burn playlist to disc".  I see many others asking the same question and I don't see answers.  I have spent all day uninstalling and reloading iTunes, testing, etc.  Even iTunes support said they couldn't help me.
I have Windows 7, and I can't really use iTunes without having the CD burner working.  I have wasted hours and will gladly pay for help, but iTunes support said "no".

  • Why does iTunes say "Disc burner or software not found"

When I try to burn a CD using my internal CD/DVD combo drive, I get a message that says "Disc burner or software not found". I just upgraded to iTunes 6.0.1. The local Mac store couldn't get iTunes in 2 G5s and a G4 Powerbook to recognize the disc buners either, and they just upgraded to 6.0.1 too. Is this a bug?? Anyone else having problems??
    Greg
    G4 400 Sawtooth / 5 years old   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   CD/DVD combo drive

Greg, did the "Patchburn" really work for you?
I had the same problem today. I have a smart playlist made up of: Kind>is>Protected AAC audio file. This smart play list allows me to keep track of music I've downloaded from the iTMS after inadvertently deleting the Purchased Music default playlist. Yes, I know a new “Purchased Music” playlist is created when you buy music again, but it doesn’t contain any of the songs you’ve already downloaded.
When I went to burn this playlist (several hundred songs) to multiple audio CD format - I go the same result you got.
"After asking to burn a play list it asks to insert CD, checks the media, checks the play list and then stops with the apple icon reappearing and NO error message."
Apple tech support couldn’t help me - I found that out the hard way - after 1.5 hours on the phone. No, I haven't exceeded the 7 time burn limit either.
I tried selecting all the songs in the smart playlist and creating a new [regular] playlist and tried to burn from that, but got the same result.
Finally, I tried typing "Protected AAC audio file" from my main library in the search window, selected all the songs that resulted, created a new [regular] playlist from that selection and the burn was successful.
It was a real pain and took almost 3 hours to figure out, but it worked. I'm going to try the "Patchburn" download talked about earlier, but don't know if that's the real problem.
Yes, I have upgraded my SuperDrive, but iTunes recognizes it - Preferences>Advanced>Burning - if your drive shows up here then that's not the problem. Besides, I had the same problem when trying to burn to the original SuperDrive too.
I think the problem may be deeper inside iTunes itself. Duh! Maybe something with Apple tightening their DRM scheme which may make us unwitting beta testers to see if they tightened the noose too tight or not. Just a guess.
    Any thoughts, anyone?
