Discs not reading - READ THIS!

I am having problems with some audio CDs not reading. The discs are all in very good condition. However, when I tried tilting the iMac so that the optical drive was horizontal (screen facing upwards), the discs worked. I have tried this a few times - alternating between the normal position of the iMac and then lifting it by 90 degrees. Obviously this is not something that I would recommend people do - nor am I happy to do this as a workaround.
Is this a known fault/issue? Would it be worth returning the iMac to Apple (or would the same happen with another unit)? Why does the optical drive orientation make a difference to whether or not a disc can be read?
If anyone else has problems with discs not reading, I would be interested to know if this works for them too.

Although my drive appears to work (I rarely use it though), I've never had any faith at all in a super slim laptop style drive installed vertically and I would not expect it to work as flawlessly as a robust table model, so I purchased an external burner a long time ago; it has worked flawlessly and is far less particular and finicky. I just feel that on a vertical model, the disk could slip ever so slightly out of position; I don't think returning/exchanging it would solve the problem - you just can't expect such a drive to do as well as a robust external unit.

  • Toast audio disc not read by other mac

I burned some CDs with Toast 10 Titanium for my disabled sister. The discs were burned from apple lossless rips I had in iTunes. Once burned they appeared on my desktop as an audio disc with the album title and the tracks appeared in iTunes. So, all good.
Unfortunately, after I gave the discs to my sister, it was found that one of the discs skipped. By the way, all the discs played on my sisters Sony mini system. I put the offending disc into my dads mini system downstairs and after reading the disc it said no disc. I then popped the disc into my dads iMac, my old G5 iMac. The iMac read the disc and then it popped up on the desktop as untitled. It also did not appear in iTunes. When I double clicked the desktop icon, an empty Finder windo opened. Get Info said it was an 8kb file. It basically looked like a blank disc! I'm confused. I tried another one too with the same result.
    What's going on?

You probably should take this question to the D-Link people, since we focus here on the MacBook Pro hardware.  My guess is that the CD is for a PC and not Mac, especially since it sounds old.
Apple's AirPort Extreme is your choice if you want to go Apple.  It's a typical Apple product.  Works perfectly (usually), does some cool things (I believe you can set up three separate signals for guests, etc), and easy to set up with a Mac.  Also, I find it incredibly easy to troubleshoot, but that's just me.  My only complaint is that it seems to have a slightly shorter range than other products, but I'm not sure I have evidence to back that up, so it's just an opinion.

  • Older Gold Maxell CD-R discs not reading

I have a ton of back up cds dating back to 97 or so. Virtually all of my Maxell CD-R recordable CDs have gone bad, OR simply the new generation of apple DVD drives do not recognize the burn. I have tried mounting (the bad ones) in my old 8600 to "see" if they will mount and they do not. Some of the older Maxells do mount however. Some have limited file corruption. Either the MAXELL disc medium is not holding out over 7 years OR the newer dual DVD drives are blasting the media while reading it and rendering the medium useless.
I would appreciate to hear if anyone else is experiencing this trouble with older CDs, namely, Maxell.

    Hi Sparky,
I had a similar problem with a gold Maxell CD-R (650 MB) burned in about 1999 or 2000.
For some reason, certain files became corrupt for no reason whatsoever. No scratches to the disc, constantly in a jewelbox... i.e. treated with care over the years.
I managed to extract maybe one or two of the actual corrupt files in tact with Data Rescue II, but the rest of these unfortunately are now six feet under. (a shame too, I had an irreplaceable .mp3 of two of my close friends singing onstage with Sting back in 1999)
The rest of the disc's contents, strangely, could be copied straight to the Desktop perfectly.
Funny thing was... I do remember the disc/files being fine in my old eMac about five years ago, the last time I had used the disc. Five years later, the same eMac wouldn't read the troublesome files anymore either. Bummer.

  • OS X disc not reading... usual story

Original install disc for OS X Tiger. Powermac 1.8 dual G5 will read the disc, then when I restart either holding C or not I get terminal like information and the dreaded giant shut down symbol saying that I need to restart the computer immediately. I have sold this machine and am trying to wipe it out and put the fresh OS on to it. What am I forgetting?
Original discs with computer. Checked for all possible updates. Triple checked to make sure they are the right discs. G5 will read any other CD just fine. Tech Tool Pro shows no problems etc etc etc.
Thank you, in advance, for your reply

you can order replacement discs, or even buy Lion 10.7
even if you normally will not and it shouldn't cause any loss of data, tells us you don't even have a good backup and recovery plan in place which you really should regardless.

  • External discs not reading?

    Hi
never used a mac before and today bought a macbook air. also bought hub and LG Slim External DVD Burner. I believe it is seeing the DVD burner, but I keep getting message that it can't read disc.
Am I correct in thinking my laptop OS is OS X only? My system requirements to get LG burner working is 10.4.10 or higher, so if I am only X I am guessing that is why it isn't working?
All seems so foreign and I am not that computer savvy to start with. Any help would be appreciated as I bought all this so I could burn my inlaws vinyl's to cd's.
    Leigh

OK BEEN searching the web madly. Am I correct with the assumption that the CD/DVD burner will never work through the hub because it is not a powered HUB?? This hub directly connects to the MAB USB.
Please help, I will take the LG burner back and buy the Mac superdriver if this is the case, at least that should work, directly connecting to MBA??

  • IWork Disc Not Reading

Hi All, didn't know where to post this so I'll try here.
Just received the new iWork '09 DVD, along with the new iLife DVD. iLife installs fine.
However, my MacBook won't even READ the iWork DVD. I've also just installed Snow Leopard, no problem. So my DVD drive is working fine .... must be a faulty DVD .... BUT, the iWork DVD loads fine on my wife's MacBook .... so the DVD seems okay on HER machine.
    This is just not logical...
    Any thoughts?
    Bill

    Hi Peter
Never thought of the salt solution ... must try that.
No, the better half's Book doesn't have Snow Leopard but iLife installed with SL on mine! This is weird. I'm going to take the DVD to NextByte and see what they say.
So far SL isn't an obvious change apart from some visual enhancements. It's all under the hood. Time Machine backs up faster (which is all I've done so far). I'd give you feedback on how much faster iWork is but, well, you know how that's going!
Oh, one BIG crappy issue ... it won't connect to my wireless network. Others have this problem too so it;s not just me - gettin' paranoid here!
Thanks for replying. I'll hopefully get this resolved soon. Otherwise ... waste of freaking money!

The problem might be the width of the barcode. Try increasing the width, and the reader would recognise it.

    Mr. Willener,
    Thank you for your reply.
I did un-install and then re-install per the Adobe recommendations which are what you listed in your reply.  The problem remained until I did a MS Windows restore to a restore point a month or so ago.  The IE problems vanished.  However, now I'm using an outdated and unsupported version that is lower than most of the web pages require for their sites, at least the ones I want to view (they all say I need to upgrade my Flash Player which, when I did, put me in this fix).

  • Read this for CD/DVD Drive with burning, missing drives, not seeing discs

Seeing lots of the same posts with the same solutions being applied (mostly upper/lower control filters/MS Fixit)... so I thought I'd put this up for everyone.
*Update* If this helps, please click the kudos to the right as I'm trying to gauge how effective this is. If you have the time to help the community, please reply stating what did or did not work.
There are some helpful HP support articles that you may want to try before posting:
If your drive cannot burn discs... or you can burn CDs but not DVDs (or vise/versa)... read this...

Drive Cannot Write to Writable Discs (Windows Vista)
Drive Cannot Write to Writable Discs (Windows 98, ME, XP)
    Summary:
    1) Try different discs! Cheap discs can be hit or miss. Find a disc brand and type that works best.
    2) Try burning at a slower speed (not the best option, but can often get the job done if the laser is fading).
    3) Remove drive from Device Manager and remove upper/lower filters (see below).
    4) Use MS System Restore to go back to a time when it was working.
    5) Use PC-Doctor/HP Hardware Diagnostic software to check for a bad drive.
    6) If the drive is not bad - save your files and use HP Recovery to put the system back to the beginning.

    1) See if the drive is listed in Device Manager (look for problems if it is).
    2) Check autoplay (skip if you don't use).
    3) Make sure a bad disc isn't knocking out the drive (an operating system mounts discs as drives and things can get screwed up).
    4) Try reading the disc from a command prompt environment (outside of Windows).
    5) Reinstall drive from Device Manager (if drive is listed). {I'd replace this with bigger process of remove upper/lower filters (see below)}.
    6) Use MS System Restore to go back to a time when it was working.

    2) Reset Power: Unplug power cord, press Power button for 10 seconds.
    3) Check power and data cables attached to the drive and look in the BIOS for the drive name.
    4) Remove upper/lower filters (see below).
    5) Reinstall burning software

    1) Uninstall the CD/DVD drive in Device Manager and DO NOT RESTART the computer.
    2) Uninstall your CD burning software (make sure you have the installation disc or you can resinstall from Start, Programs, PC Help and Tools, Recovery Manager (or Driver/Application Recovery). If you don't have the installation discs, skip this step - it might still work).
    3) Open the registry editor (Start -> Run -> enter Regedit) ... might want to make a backup of the registry at this point.
    4) Open the following keys:
     + HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
     + SYSTEM
+ CurrentControlSet (or the current control set with lowest number if that is all that is listed)
     + Control
     + Class
    5) Select 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318. It has to be this exact key - make sure you can see the last numbers!!!
    6) Delete the UpperFilter and or the LowerFilters value in the right window if either exists.
    7) RESTART the computer - this step is important. Wait for Windows to find and install the CD/DVD drive you removed earlier.
    8) Reinstall your burning software and restart the computer again.

That's why you want to make a backup of the registry. If you didn't make a backup, use MS system restore to go back. The only values you should remove are UpperFilter or LowerFilter - one or both may be in there and can be removed. If neither value exists, then that is probably why you can't burn and Windows is not recognizing your drive as a writable drive.

  • If you're NOT running Aperture 3.6 and want to update to 10.10.3 - read this FIRST.

If you’re NOT running Aperture 3.6 and want to update to 10.10.3 - read this FIRST.
In this personal scenario, I used a Mavericks (10.9) test hard drive to see what would happen if I updated to 10.10.3. No photos were harmed in the making of this post. I have full redundant back-ups of everything as should you before attempting ANY OS update. There simply is no excuse not to back up and keep your personal data protected in this day and age.
Now that’s out of the way…
If you’re not running Aperture 3.6 (which I believe is only available if running 10.10.2), updating to 10.10.3 will disable any version of Aperture below that and it CANNOT be updated or found on the App Store, or downloaded from anywhere else. Both the Aperture and iPhotos icons in the dock will have a white circle with a line going through it.
If you click to open Aperture, the computer will prompt you to update to the latest version because the current version is not compatible with Yosemite. After you acknowledge that, it sends you the the App Store where you will be met with a message that states “Item not available”. It also no longer appears in your purchase history so you can’t update it from there either!
You’re now forced to use the new Photos app.
Upon it’s it’s first launch, the Photos app will create a new library for itself and migrate/duplicate all Aperture photos into it. Effectively doubling the disc space used by your pictures...
This behavior apparently does not happen going from 10.10.2 to 10.10.3. In this latter scenario, Photos still uses the Aperture library and creates a smaller Photos library migrating only the metadata it seems. The actual photos are still referenced from the Aperture library and you can continue to use Aperture (3.6) if you choose. The libraries are NOT unified though. Changes made in one will NOT be reflected in the other.
In other words, you cannot leap-frog update if you want to continue using Aperture.
The 10.10.2 Combo Update “may” solve this problem but I have not tested it. Here is a link if you’re feeling brave. https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1786?locale=en_US
    Here are some screen-shots.

I had been trying to download 7.0.1 with Firefox 3.6. Just would NOT download. Well, I opened another browser, Safari, went to the download page, and the download worked. Who knew?
    All is well now.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • CD/ DVD Drive is not reading any discs! - HP Pavillion DV6747TX

Hi there, I have a problem. My CD/ DVD Drive is not reading any discs! I have no idea what's happened..it was going fine and then all of the sudden it stopped working.
The computer I have is a HP Pavillion DV6700 or DV6747TX to be exact and the CD/DVD-Rom drive is a TSSTcgrp CDDVDW TS%L632N ATA Device. It seems to be present in the Device Manager and in the Computer Menu. When I put a CD or DVD into the disc drive lights are blinking and it sounds like it's trying to load or do something, but nothing is coming up. CD Drive E still says CD Drive E instead of reading the disc that's in there and when I click on Drive E it says Windows cannot read the disc in drive E.
I have tried searching the net for answers including the suggestions on this website and have tried a few other ideas I have come across but nothing seems to be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated

This is usually  a known software conflict and happens across the board will all computer manufacturers due to a issue with multiple media burning/ripping applications being installed on your system.
You can either run this file, go online to Microsoft's site for a fix, or manually fix it by following the instructions below:
    Manually delete the registry entries
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
Note Before you use this method, uninstall all CD or DVD writing or recording programs. Deleting the corrupted registry entries might cause problems with any other CD or DVD writing or recording programs that are installed on your computer. Uninstalling these programs before you start will help you avoid any problems that removing the registry entries might cause. You can reinstall these programs after the problem is resolved.
This method provides step-by-step instructions for how to use Registry Editor to delete the following corrupted Registry entries:
    UpperFilters
    LowerFilters
Step 1: Start Registry EditorStart Registry Editor
Start Registry Editor...type "regedit" into the run box on the start menu.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
Expand Control, and then expand Class.
    Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.
Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value?
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.
Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.
If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value? The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Step 4: Restart your computer
Restart your computer. After you have done this, try to access the CD or DVD drive. If you can access the CD or DVD drive, and if you do not receive an error message, the problem is resolved. You can reinstall your CD or DVD writing or recording software.

When i put a cd/dvd in the drive and try to access it, it says: D:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
Can anybody help me i've tried everything me and my friends can think of, or is it a better idea to just send it back to toshiba under the warranty.

    Hello,
Here are a few windows articles that could help.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891894/en-us
This one might do the trick, if not try this one.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826510/en-us
Hope these help resolve the problem. If not it could be a registry setting error which can be rectified as well. But only if these 2 above do not help to resolve the problem.
