Discussions Alias & Apple ID

It has been a long time since I logged into the Discussions forum. When I tried to log-in, I typed in my Apple ID & password, I was then taken to a page to create a Discussions account. When I tried to enter my Apple ID in the Alias field, it said that the name was already taken.
I'm a little confused, I would think that simply logging into my Apple ID would allow me access to the Discussions without having to create anything else.
Can you shed some light on this new process?

I received your email - thank you.
I can get logged onto Discussions just fine, but I had to create an Alias in order to do so. I remember before (again, it's been a long time since I've been here) I only had to use my Apple ID to get onto Discussions.
I just find it strange that I have an Apple ID but in order to get onto Discussions, I must also have an alias. I would think that my Apple ID name would be my alias. Unfortunately, when I tried to make my Alias the same as my Apple ID name, it was already in use.
Everything is fine, I created a new Alias and I can get onto Discussions just fine, I was just a little confused on the dual name (Apple ID & Alias) requirement.
Thank you for your time.

    Ken,
kenak99709 is the Alias of the Discussions account that you are currently posting with.
If you had to have created a new account, you would not have been able to choose that Alias, as Discussions will only allow one member to have a unique Alias.
Either I am not understanding your dilemma, or possibly you have not explained the situation in full.

  • How do I change my Apple Discussions Alias name?

I dont want to keep displaying my own name here, not sure why, but it seems that most dont. Online security I suppose.
I asked this question in the wrong forum, but I am led to believe that it is just not possible. I was told that I could delete my Apple ID and create a new one but I don't want to do that either.
The thing about getting another Apple ID is that I use it for many other things and don't want to cause myself problems elsewhere. I use my Apple ID for iTunes, it is linked to my MobileMe account (no idea how to unlink it or link it to another ID), I use it for online shopping in the apple store, it is linked to my various Apple Care products, I use it for my iChat account (because nobody I know uses Jabber or AIM). So I am pretty reluctant to lose it.
I can't understand why you can change your actual Apple ID Name, but not your alias??? It seems sensible not to be able to change your actual Apple ID login name (I use my dormant @mac.com address), but your alias?? What else is it used for???
On the topic of losing points when you change your Discussions login account: This doesnt really apply to me. I don't think I have any points (cant see any on my profile) and wouldn't know how to benefit from them even if I did? I do try to help people out from time to time, rather than just use the forums to help myself, but I am relatively new to Mac's (commercially anyway), and am therefore not that helpful.

Sorry, just saw the BIG yellow post just above this one!!!
    However...
Important: If you enter your real name in the Alias field, your real name will appear as your alias. Also note that angle bracket characters ( ) are not allowed. Once you create an alias, you cannot make changes to it. If you want to change your alias, you will need to create a new User Account."
I am very happy to create a new User account, but I dont want to have to create a new Apple ID. It this possible???

  • Missing Discussion Category - Where to discuss fraudulent Apple sellers?

I have found a seller on ebay who is selling new Apple computers and shipping refurbished models instead. After catching him and returning the 17" MacBook Pro, he re-listed it, and sold it to the next victim. I contacted her, and she is working with the local police in an attempt to get this seller to stop. Meanwhile, the seller has posted yet another machine which I suspect is also a refurbished model being sold as new.
I have contacted Apple about this, and am getting no response. I have offered to provide them with further details, but my e-mails (to a long time employee) appear to be falling on deaf ears. I am very interested in knowing what Apple's policy is in policing this issue and what, if anything, they do to perpetrators. This perpetrator is unbelievably arrogant, even after having been caught, which causes me to think he has found a loophole in the system that Apple isn't addressing.
I am hoping someone can shed some light on this. This type of behavior only serves to damage the reputation and quality of the wonderful products that Apple makes. It would be comforting to know that they are doing something about it.

    Hi Teri!
I could be mistaken, but I'm not sure, that Apple can control what vendors post on eBay, unless maybe, said vendor is promoting as an Apple Authorized Reseller.
There are always unscrupulous sellers on that venue, and it's a Buyer Beware proposition.
But, you can contact Apple Legal.
Or maybe one of the other Legal Contacts Listed HERE.
You should also utilize Contact eBay Site Admins, and file a report.

  • Alias apple mail account email not being received

I set up three alias accounts for my .me email account. When I conduct a simple test by sending a test message to any of the three alias accounts, the message is sent, but never received.
What's the trick to get this to work?
    Thanks!

    Hi Paul Kirtley,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are talking about setting up new iCloud aliases (as opposed to carrying over previous MobileMe aliases), you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:

  • Cannot download Adobe 189 OR access discussion on Apple board

I can find a discussion of this on Google, but Apple will not allow me access.  I cannot download the latest Adobe 189.  HELP

What do you mean 'Apple will not allow me access' ? Are you asking about buying/downloading items from the iTunes store (that is what this forum is for) ?

  • Open Discussion To APPLE on IOS 5

C'mon Apple:  I'll give you the time to grieve, as have many of us, over the loss of a great man in Steve Jobs... but you can't just "Check-Out" from such a major release such as IOS 5 and iTunes 10.5, and Lion when I, for example see thousands of  postings (like the removal of the "Global Notifications Button"), just to name one, on the iPhone with IOS 5... but with many, many more with the above 3 recent releases.
I am sitting here with a new iMac 27" ( and I know I am not alone on this with many of the types of devices below)
    1. Running Lion 10.7.1 an NOT doing the 10.7.2 upgrade due to the problems it creates;
    2. Running iTunes 10.4.1 and NOT doing the 10.5 upgrade because of all the problems listed in the forums;
    3. Running IOS 4.3.5 on my iPhone 4 and NOT doing the IOS 5 upgrade because of a list of over 40 of my 274 iPhone Apps whose Apps have essentially been "broken" by IOS 5.
    4. Still using Mobile Me since the existing problems with iCloud preemt me from migrating to it.
I've got a list of over 20 (and counting) of my 275 iPhone 4 Apps that I cannot use the "Update All" button to since their reviews all say that IOS 5 has "broken" the App.  Now I know that it is NOT Apple's responsibility to make the millions of Apps out there IOS 5 compatible, but hey.... there must be a better approach to coordinating with all of the App writers so they can reliably develop their new versions.... this is ridiculous that I'm held hostage from doing Apple Updates for fear of breaking "umteen" applications or APPs.
I have never witnessed in all my MAC decades such a mess as currently exists with Lion, IOS 5, iTunes 10.5, and iCloud.

  • Alias for discussions?

I recently noticed that my Discussions alias has disappeared and my full name is now showing...I cannot for the life of me find where to change it back!

Also, I just tried setting up a new Apple ID using my alias. I logged out and logged back in with my new ID, and it still says "Welcome Janice DiMeglio"

  • Apple IDs and Discussion accounts

The last time I posted in Apple Discussions was back in January of this year using one of the Apple IDs I have amassed over the years. Today, when I logged in, a page came up asking me to create a Discussion account. I didn't want to create another alias, so I tried logging in with all of my Apple IDs, at least the ones I can recall, but every time, the page to create a new Discussion account came up. Now, I'm reasonably certain that back in January, I had used one of these Apple IDs to post here, so it seems strange that none of them appears to be associated with my previous alias.
Is there a way to find out which Apple ID is associated with my original alias? And is there a reason it would not already be connected to one of my Apple IDs?

Thanks for the reply, Miriam. I was trying to log in during the afternoon, so what I was seeing wasn't due to the problems in the morning. It turns out I selected the wrong Apple ID on my first guess, so it took me to the page to create a new alias, as it should have. However, when I logged in subsequently with an account that already had an associated discussion alias, it took me back to the alias-creation page because that's where I had been previously when I logged out. Consequently, even though I had logged in with the correct Apple ID, I didn't realize it because it kept taking me back to that page instead of into the forums as I was expecting.
I finally dawned on me what was going on when, taking your advice, I started trying my Apple IDs one by one. My first attempts again took me to the alias-creation page each time. It looked like my problem was still there, so I decided to log back in with this account to post to this thread. When it again asked me to create an alias, I realized it was taking me there regardless of whether I really needed to go there or not. So I logged in using each Apple ID and finally found the one I had used months ago.
I'm still not sure how Safari remembered what page I was on since I was clearing out my apple.com cookies between each login attempt with a different account. In any case, everything is good now. Thanks for the help.

  • Why isn't Apple allowing free discussion of the new iPhone?

After all, it's FREE consumer based feedback. Apple doesn't necessarily have to confirm or deny the product, but it can certainly learn from our feedback. Is there any other reason I'm not aware of?

    Number 2:
    2. Stay on topic. Apple Discussions is here to help people use Apple products and technologies more effectively. Unless otherwise noted, do not add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
    1. Speculations or rumors about unannounced products.
    2. Discussions of Apple policies or procedures or speculation on Apple decisions.

  • Apple Discussion Forums: an important tech support resource

There have been ongoing discussions within Apple regarding whether or not to continue supporting these discussion forums, specifically, the issue of continuing to employ live humans to monitor and moderate them. It seems to me that it would not be a significant drain on Apple Computer Inc.'s resources to employ 1-2 persons to comb this (very large) discussions site for significant unresolved issues having broad relevance to the Mac user community. Said issues could then be routed either to a small, forums-dedicated team of Apple engineers, or distributed to the larger second-tier support group such that each tech rep would only have to handle a few responses per week (or month, depending on the size of the available employee pool). The net benefits to Apple -- in terms of reduced number of tech support calls, a more-empowered, self-sufficient, and satisfied user base, and increased goodwill toward the company -- would, in my estimation, more than repay the salaries and efforts required to keep these discussion forums running efficiently and effectively. I believe Apple is savvy enough and responsible enough to know this; they have probably done the calculus. Perhaps, then, our most important task is to let the parent firm know that we use and value this resource. Hopefully, Apple managers will note and make the right decisions.

Yes ... but why pay for it when they have a very good base of people that respond to postings? ... actually let me ask a better question.... if you were apple why would you bother to tell everyone the screen name of the moderator ... don't you think they'd get absolutely bombarded with email?
    Maybe I'm a moderator ...
