Discussions login doesn't stick

When I put my iPad to sleep, with a Discussions window open in Safari, and come back, I always have to log in again. On my computer, I remain logged in as long as the browser is open. Is this some kind of security feature? And is there a way around it?

hi Christoph,
i doubt it. in fact, i'm experiencing the exact opposite: staying connected to AD on my iPad while Safari on my Macs keeps disconnecting, requiring me to log in several times a day.

  • Discussions login doesn't allow user to paste password

    Hi all,
is it just me or does the discussions.apple.com not allow you to paste your password when signing in? Seems a bit of a security issue leaving you open to keyloggers....

The Jive software that runs these forums does not allow it.
Most of us just let it autofill.

  • Login picture not sticking

I've changed from a 1st gen MBP to a latest gen one. Transferred all from the old to the new via firewire during the initial setup.
    All is working OK.
BUT: when I want to change the login picture of my account (admin and only one) I can change it but it doesn't stick, i.e. it does not change the picture on the left list where the users are.
This should be a nobrainer but I can't get it working.
    What is happening here????
    Please advise

That's because your login picture isn't actually saved in your own user's home directory. It's in a rather odd place -- not sure why Apple did it this way, but here's the solution:
    You'll find it lives here:
    Macintosh HD -> Library -> Caches -> com.apple.user501picture.Cache.tiff
Note that '501' is the Unix userID number of the first user account created on the box. If you have more than one user, then you'll find more than one file (e.g. a 'com.apple.user502picture.Cache.tiff', etc.). Since you used the account migration utility when you first set it up then your accounts will have identical Unix user ID numbers on each machine (you wont need to worry about renaming them).
Just copy the file from the old machine to that same location on the new machine. You may have to reboot after the copy before the picture shows up.
What I find really odd about this is that it lives in a folder named 'Caches'. A 'Cache' is, by definition, not authoritative (e.g. it implies that the real data lives somewhere else), but I ran into this same issue and have scoured my hard drive in search of another location and this is the only one. Also... the folks at the local Apple Genius Bar report the same thing (this is the only place it's stored).

  • Logging into 'Other' (Server) login doesn't show though bind does

Working on an OS 10.5.6 Advanced server that was set and users were only using AFP, but no DNS and Open Directory. So carefully went through and set these up.The standard testing 'checkhost' and all, shows DNS is working correctly. Client computers had the DNS pointer changed and went through Dirctory Utility and did the binding. Server indicates these computers are bound. One of four client computers works as expected, "Other" shows as a login choice and can log into the server. All the different client accounts work throught this station. Three computers show as Bind being setup, but the "Other" login simply doesn't appear. All but one are running 10.5.6, with one computer running 10.4.11. All three computers that show as bound, can sign in via Go > to the AFP share(s) just fine, only the server/network login doesn't appear. Have checked everything we can think of and need further suggestions on how to resolve this issue? - Lewis

LDAP is indeed listed and home folders have been created in an Auto-Mount directory. Everything appears just like the computers on this network that are binding OK and show an "Other" login. Now I have noticed one thing... every so often when I open Directory Utility - it shows the staus as "nonresponding" with a red dot. If I hit "Connect" it changes to a green OK dot, but upon logout/login the "Other" is still not a choice. Ran Disk Repair, Repair Permissions, re-ran the combo updater of the current system - 10.5.6. Ran the unbind on the computer and removed computer from Workgroup manager... still no joy. Just do not see a way to get a reliable Bind and network login? Bind seems to be happening... but "Other" as a network login just doesn't show.

I don't know if it helps. But I had problems with the x-server not starting (didn't even get a gui login just command line) re-setting the network properties seemed to fix it, looks like anything dodgy in the network config stuffs up the start up proceedure.

  • International Date Format Doesn't "Stick"

I have tried to set the international date and time format to "medium" for both the Dates and Times sections, but no matter what I do the change doesn't stick. Upon restart, the setting has reverted to "short". What can I do to get the "medium" setting to stay?

    Hi Jason -
Not sure if this will work but try deleting the presets that are present, then select 'medium' then add the numerical bits that you want into the empty space by dragging them over. Don't forget to hit OK. After this try logging out to see if it stuck or not.

  • Capture Noise Print doesn't stick

I had to reinstall Audition CC to restore broken Dynamic Linking with Premiere. Now, whenever I capture a Noise Print then open the Noise Reduction process, it hasn't retained the profile. I have to capture from within the NR process in order to get a print. Simple enough to do but was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this.

I've also had it happen before and, like you, assumed it was me so I didn't report it.
Today I was being fairly careful because I was going to write a "did you do xxx" reply to the OP--and my first try didn't retain the noise print where my second one on the same recording did.
One thing I noticed was that the graphic display appeared to give noise print details but they's wouldn't move when I adjusted the sliders.
Possibly an intermittant bug?  Certainly one to keep an eye on.
    Edited to add an update:
Playing with the NR and noise print, it appears that the first time after opening Audition, if you use "Capture Noise Print" (Cntrl P) from the main "twirl down" it doesn't stick.  Subsequent uses of the facility are fine but, once you've closed Audition and re-opened it, you get another "blank".  I suspect the reason I've not noticed this properly before is that I quickly learned there are fewer clicks to simply go into NR and grab the noise print from there rather than get one "on the way in" as it were.
Anyhow, that's what's happening on my machine.

  • GDM login doesn't work anymore

Hey guys, I know there are some topics related to "gdm" and "login" and "can't", but none of them seemed to fit my problem. So I decided to open a new topic nonetheless. If I shouldn't have, I'm sorry.
Some strange things happened today. I forgot to shut down my computer when I went to the university this morning, and when I came back I wanted to restart it. Well, when I restarted my computer gdm won't let me login. Login screen comes up, I type in my password, then the screen goes black and gdm login window pops up again.
I searched through the logfiles, but couldn't find anything. I searched through forums, Google, but didn't find anything that helped. I updated Arch (updated Gnome, as I saw then) and tried if the way via .xinitrc would work. It worked. So Gnome works, gdm doesn't. Why is that?
    Thanks in advance!

I got the same problem now on my laptop. I freshly installed Archlinux on it. On my computer, 0:-greeter.log shows this error:

On both machines, Gnome works without errors when starting it via .xinitrc.

  • Server directory doesn't stick in sidebar

Tiger allowed me to maintain a specific server directory in the sidebar — even after restarting the Mac it would be there. Now, with Leopard, if I want that server directory to show, I have to put it there EVERY time I start the Mac. Having only the top level of a server appear under “SHARED” it not useful. Nobody in our office uses the top level of the server — everyone uses something 5 or 6 levels deep. Isn’t there a way to make that directory ALWAYS appear like it did with Tiger? Apple support said there is a way to do, but could not officially explain how because it is not supported. They suggested posting the question to this forum. Anyone have a procedure for making a server directory stick in the sidebar? Thanks for any help.

I just did some experimenting and I've come to these conclusions.
Shared Volumes (or the top level shares on a computer) will go into devices, and you have to set them as login items also to get them to mount at startup. Making an alias to them will also work if you don't want to have them connect at login.
Folders within shares will only go into Places. You don't have to make an alias of the folder, though.
I think it has to do with the Mount Point. As the Volumes are Devices in the unix world, they can only show up if mounted. However, the folders are just aliases to network locations so they stay put.
So, if you have multiple volumes that you don't want to automount at login, mount them, put them in the Devices section, and make aliases to them in a folder that you place in the Dock. Then, you can mount them from the dock and they should then appear in the sidebar.
Place any folders in the Places section, or do the same as you do with the Volumes.

  • The login doesn't work like it used to - why?

When I used to click from an email link to these discussion forums, it would take me to the particular thread, and then I would login; that would return me to the thread (where I might have to refresh the page to show I was logged in).
NOW, after logging in, it takes me to the discussions home page, not the thread I was in. No amount of refreshing will bring it back. So the procedure of getting to the discussions is now :
    1) click on the email link and be taken to the thread
    2) click Login and enter login details
    3) find myself at the discussions home page
    4) close the discussions home page
    5) return to Mail and click the email link again
    6) get to the correct thread and find that I am apparently not logged in
    7) refresh the page to show I am now logged in
This is ridiculously cumbersome and lame. Why can we not login and then return to the thread where we were, as we used to? (The browser is Safari, by the way).

A faster way, which works for me when I have logged out, is to log in, get the Discussions home page and then hit reload, which takes me to the thread I was looking for.
Hope this works for you,the alternative is to keep logged-in in your browser and avoid all this.

  • Auto Login Doesn't Work After Re-Install

Visited bad link within Facebook! Thereafter, forced to re-install Firefox -- from scratch!! Saved a few of the profile files like bookmarks, passwords, but no extension stuff. Re-installed FireFox after deleting ALL tracks I could find in Program Files, Program Files (x86), and Windows 7 Pro profile.
On visiting a page requiring login, Firefox populates the userid & password properly. BUT, it doesn't start the login. Formerly, this was essentially a background process and not really visible to me. Now, we stop at the page demanding credentials and click the "login" button.
I have "IE VIEW", "NOSCRIPT", and "ADBLOCK PLUS". ALL of my plugins are in "Ask to Activate" mode.
I have enabled extensions: "ADOBE ACROBAT - Create PDF 1.2" and "Trend Micro NSC FireFox Extension 5.82.0.1056".
I'd surely like to get FireFox to working as it previously did. I just don't know where to look/tweak!
    Thanks,

  • Display brightness setting doesn't stick on power cycle

The display brightness setting doesn't seem to stick during power cycles on my new 13" i7, it almost always sets itself to full brightness when I turn it on. This isn't really a huge deal but it is kind of a nuisance as I typically keep it around half, why should I be turning it back down every time I boot up???.
I have un-checked the box through settings for adjusting brightness based on ambient light, and made sure it is in fact staying un-checked.
I have also reset PRAM a few times now which seems to provide a temporary fix only. After a day or two it's back to square one again.
Any ideas, or is this a bug that there's currently no fix for?

Hi, I have recently bought GE60-0ND notebook with Win8 preinstalled which I got rid of in a second I got home, reinstalled with my licensed Win7. Half of things didn't work so I flashed the correct firmware. From that point on everything works perfectly, only brightness control is broken. I simply cannot control my monitor's brightness with my special keys nor in power control setup. So I googled.. and some smart guy recommended a bios flash as well. But when I try, it says either "Problem getting flash information" or "Problem getting bios information".
Any thoughts how to get the brightness control work?
Thanks for any kind of advice
Did you switch the BIOS and the EC Firmware to the Windows 7 counterparts?
You may want to ask Svet about that error.

  • Renamed parent directory doesn't stick

I have a parent directory located on a remote volume on my server. Lightroom chose to name my directory,
    2006 at /Volumes/Photos/JimsPhotos/15D RAW
This is because there's also another directory on the server named,
    2006 at /Volumes/Photos/JimsPhotos/1D60 RAW
But I'd rather see the names as, 2006 5D RAW and 2006 D60 RAW. However, when I change the directory names, they stick until I exit and relaunch LR when they get changed back to their originals -- and of course the name is so long I can't read it in the Library.
