Discusted @ Genius Bars aptitude after iphone got so hot it burned the desk

I have just got back from my nearest Apple store (which is a 120 mile round trip) to get my iphone replaced after it overheated twice whilst charging to the point that on the second occasion (last night) it damaged the desk it was on.
After the first time it happend ast week I did some searching around and it appeared to be a common problem. I noticed a few places mentioning the water sensor in it and to check this before taking it in for warrenty work, I checked mine yesterday and it was white.
Anyhow earlier today I put it on charge again and within 20 mins it was so hot it damaged the table top, I had to hold it i a cloth to unplug it and move it.
Anyhow, So I decided to take it the 60 mile drive to the store as I could not be without it for the 2 days quoted if it was collected from home, When I get there an appoitment was made for an hours time to see a so called genius.
This guy instantly said it's been in water, I explained that it hadn't and the sensor was white yesterday and the only thing that had happened between now and then was that it had got so hot it had burned a table, he refuse to do anything else with it but record the serial number in his system.
On asking if there was any way the senso could change colour without getting wet, he said no errr I don't think so. I asked about te over heating could that damage the sensor ? err don't think so.. Then th clasic question from him, "maybe you've been out in the rain, that can set them off" The phone lives in a case that covers everything but the dock and screen so no "rain" could have got in, even if I had been stupid enough to use it in the rain (which I am not)
So I am left at this point with an Iphone that could possibly cause a fire, that Apple refuse to fix because they "errm don't know if excessive heat can fail a water sensor"

The phone is charged on the AC charger, but we have 2 Iphones and an Ipod Touch in the house and the others are fine, this happend on 2 different chargers so is not an AC charger fault.
I have written to the manager and included the photo, so I am waiting to hear back, I also had an email from Apple asking me to fill out a survey on what I thought of my recent visit to the Genius Bar
I have filled that in as well, as I was not happy with the service it gave an option to be contacted by phone to discuss my issues further, so agreed to that. Who knows what will happen now, best case the phone will be replaced before it catches fire

    try forcing internet recover, hold 3 keys - command, option, r - you should see a spinning globe
    most people will tell you to do both pram and smc resets (google) and if you still have issues, either clean install (easy) or troubleshoot (hard)

    If you can somehow document any processes you've put the MacBook
    through, which can cause it to repeat the symptoms you've seen, be
    sure to write down the sequence of events if your action and resulting
    issues can be make re-occur. Then you'd have a fair chance at some
    one looking deeper to find the real cause of this problem. {If you have
    a digital camera handy, you can take a picture of the screen if it should
    display some curious content other than a black screen, such as that
    seen in a kernel panic or other message. Otherwise, a working Mac
    can take its own screenshot.}
    The computer should be returned to the Apple Store genius bar for
    further evaluation & more in-depth diagnostic tests of long duration.
    Sometimes a test may not run any of the additional software, together
    or separately, that you may be accustomed to using. Perhaps the basic
    OS X and a few applications work just fine.
    If the issue is due to a conflict in software and not a hardware failure,
    the cause may be harder to discover. If you have a complete backup
    of the system and your files on an external drive, that may help if you
    need to reinstall it. However if there is a problem in that software set
    a new installation without conflicting software may be required in order
    to troubleshoot the machine.
    How old is the computer, how much RAM installed, how large a hard
    disk drive and what is the remaining unused capacity of that drive?
    (The HDD capacity will show 'other' so that may be unsubstantiated.)
    Are there any indications in Activity Monitor, or in the system log files
    from Console, to show crash logs or other effects from the Time/Date
    of these slow wakeup and black-screen intervals? There may be.
    Some of the system report may be helpful to those who know how to
    read the resulting mass of files. Perhaps one of the more advanced
    users who occasionally reply here will see your thread and offer a
    method of accessing the OS X via Terminal or single user mode,
    for troubleshooting purposes. Mine is an older OS X with less fuss.

  • HT201401 When last charging my iphone 5 it got really hot, and then the screen went black. Now my phone wont turn on, register when i plug it into the computer, reset, or charge.

    I've already tried plugging it in to reset-nothing.
    I've tried holding the top and home button-nothing.
    Plugging it into the wall-nothing.
    Using a different cord- nothing.
    this is an iPhone 5. with whatever ios system that came with the iphone 5. did not upgrade to the ios 7 yet.

  • IPhone got really hot

    I was just walking with my iPhone and turn on iPod and the screen switched off, I've tried to turn on iPhone, but he doesn't turn on but the top part of iPhone became really HOT, like +60 +70C. I can't even hold the phone in my hands for the top part. Power button really HOT probably +80C. The main problem that I can't take out the battery and today in Sunday and I'm in the middle of Russia. There is no Apple service at all.

    Well, my screen went black, but I don't know if iPhone is turned off, there is no signs if the screen is dead you can't figure out if the power is on or off. Looks like in Apple they don't think that there should be a light indicator of power.
    Anyway, the phone is still hot, but cooling down. Thats makes me feel better, I thought that it's will explode.

    I changed my email address a few years ago. I did not have any problems after this change until I got a new computer. Now I cannot play items that were purchased under the previous email. I entered the password that I used and it doesn't recognize it. I tried "forgot your password" in every combination possible. I never received any emails at the old email address. Now the old email address no longer even exists. How can I access these hundreds of items?

    The old email address may well still be valid as your iTunes AppleID, however if you have no other email associated with that ID you clearly won't get any automated emails to it.
    I still use an old defunct email for my iTunes AppleID.

  • My BT keyboard delete button now forward deletes rather than backspacing like it used to do. This happened after I got my iMac back from the hard drive replacement program. Any ideas how to return the keyboard to the default backspace?

    The good news after my hard drive was replaced during Apple's Seagate replacement program -- all my data and settings reinstalled seamlessly through Time Machine and my external hard drive. Bad news? My BT keyboard will now only forward delete when I hit the delete key rather than backward delete. I find this so ironic since I hated this feature when I switched from PC to Mac, but now I'm totally used to it. I tried resetting the default under system preferences, but it didn't help. Otherwise, keyboard works perfectly. This is so strange. Anyone have any suggestions? Oh -- and now I see my arrows don't work either.

    Data is not stored on the SIM card of the iPhone. Had you synced it with your computer? If not, your data may be lost if the iPhone is fully nonfunctional. If it still functions, you might attempt to sync it and see what you can recover from it or possibly see if you can manually get your info out and into the new phone.

  • I have an '09 13in MacBook (not pro) and my charger got so hot it melted the plastic on my mb above the charging port.

    It not longer charge at all I tried other chargers which also did not work and its completely dead. Does anyone have any possible solutions? I took it to a repair shop and they were going to replace the port where you plug the charger to, but I wanted to know if that was actually the problem before I go shelling out money for it to not even be fixed.

    Thanks my boyfriend actually took my MacBook apart since the rubber bottom was already gone. He removed the MagSafe port and were getting a new one along with a new charger and hopefully this fixes my problem. I didn't think he was actually going to be able to take the thing apart since most need special tools.
