Disengaging the keyboard latch

Hello;
Does anyone know how to do this for a G4 Powerbook?
I am trying to reset the PMU. I have the keyboard screws off (under the F1/F2 and F11/F12 keys. I also have the F5/F6 keys off. I have removed the screws but the latch(?) seems to be black and is not a normal screw.
Help please.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply...
I have a PowerBook G4 (867 MHz). Believe me, I cased the thing all over and there is no reset buttton anywhere on the outside. (I know what they look like as I am a long time Apple user, and this is my fourth machine).
This is just final effort before taking to the shop tomorrow, but I don't live anywhere near London so it will be a third party, certified Apple repair shop. I just thought I would try this first, rather than paying some guy to push a button that I almost have access to.
Cheers

  • Disengaging the keyboard latch for 12" G4 Powerbook

    Hello again;
    Does anyone know how to disengage the keyboard latch for a G4 Powerbook 12" ?
    I am trying to reset the PMU. I have the keyboard screws off (under the F1/F2 and F11/F12 keys. I also have the F5/F6 keys off. I have removed the screws but the latch(?) seems to be black and is not a normal screw.

    (This is also posted in the 'power-battery' section (sorry but I'm desperate to fix this machine).

    First, there is no reason to remove the keyboad in order to do a PMU reset on any of the 12" powerbooks. For instructions on PMU resets for all 'modern' macs, see this kbase document: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
    Second, there is no latch on the keyboard for those machines. To remove the keyboard you just remove those F1, F2, F11, F12 keys, remove the tiny screws under them. Then turn the computer over, remove the 4 screws holding the ram cover on, remove the single black screw found under that panel. Now the keyboard will flip up. • Where are the keyboard latches on Titanium PB 15" 1 GHz??

    I'm trying to reset my PMU but I can't find the keyboard latches that are suppose to be between the ESC + F1 and F11 + F12 keys as stated in the article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449#faq9.
    I looked at the 15" 1 GHz manual and it does show a space between these Esc + F1 and F11 + F12.
    My Esc + F1 keys butt up to one another as do all the keys.
    Am I missing something? (...yes I have a 1 GHz 15" Titanium)
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Titanium: see the image below:
    The middle latch (F5-F6) has a screw which also lights as the num lock lamp. You'll need a screw driver to undo that one. The other two latches have a small ridge to get your nail behind.
    If the keys are right next togther then you must have a 1GHz Aluminium PB... as shown below:

  • Vesa Mount adaptor: Cannot disengage the latch on the aluminium stand

    I am trying to remove the stand from my 24" intel imac to attach a vesa mount adaptor. I have the right adaptor with clear instruction book and the white plastic credit card size tool but I am damned if I can disengage the latch. I have spent a good 3 or 4 hours over the past few days but without success. I have followed the demonstration on youtube and tried to get details from any threads on the net but still cant get the "latch" to disengage ..... any ideas PLEASE !!

    I've tried all of your good advice but to no avail. If I look really closely I can just make out a metal strip insode the mac about the same width as the stand ... sometimes the card slides underneath it and goes all the way in, sometimes it slides over the top and goes all the way in and sometimes it hits the metal strip and stops but doesn't do anything else .. even with sliding the card left to right or wiggling the stand, slowly or quickly ... there is no sound of any release ....

  • Is there a hidden screw or latch under the ctrl key to release the keyboard on the HP ENVY dv6-7250?

    The keyboard is damaged and I want to replace it.
    I have a HP Envy dv6 Notebook PC Model # C2L44UA#ABL with S/N {Content Removed}
    i believe the part number is B6R23AV WIN 8 MULTI lANGUAGE 64.1.1 dv6 for the keyboard.
    I removed all the screws and separated the top surface that holds the keyboard but something under the ctrl key is holding everything together.
    Is there a release mechanism in that area. If so how does it work?

  • Black "finish" coming off!/ that annoying "ping" under the keyboard

    I have two separate issues with my MacBook (black) that I purchased about 2 mos. ago.
    1) I'm hearing a "ping" or "tink" at regular intervals (20-30 sec.) under the right side of the keyboard, sort of near the "delete key" area. I noticed some other people have posted a similar issue, but I didn't see a consensus answer as to what is going on.
    2) Apparently, the black finish of the MacBook is covered by some sort of clear filmy material...and, mine is beginning to peel off (at the seam on the right corner..just to the right of where my hands rest). I can only assume this will continue. Great.
    Anyone else having these problems? I actually went to the "Genius Bar" this morning for help. My plastic-disengagement was the first case of it the fellow had seen. And, unfortunately, I don't think he properly heard the "ping" noise (as he had to go listen in the back of the store where it wasn't so noisy, and I wasn't readily available to point out what i was talking about). He may have thought I was just bothered by normal program start-up nosies. This "ping" noise is like water torture if you're working in a quiet library office.

    Yeah, I'll probably wait a little bit to return to the Genius Bar, or take it to another Apple store. I'm pretty sure the "ping"/"boink" noise wasn't an issue in the first month of use.
    He did make a record of the situation with the finish. I assume this goes into my apple care record and maybe some general database of "things we need to work on." I asked what I should do if this continued (with the fear that it probably would). He said to bring it back to the store. I'm not sure what Apple would do in that case. If/when I get to that stage, I'll update. I just wasn't sure if this was a possible problem b/c this is a new-ish finish.

  • Noise under the keyboard

    Hi all,
    My Powerbook model is with the higher resolution.
    I am getting noise from under the keyboard. It's mostly from around "G" and "H" key. It sounds like electric noise. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about it.
    thanks,
    Tom

    I'm having exactly the same problem. My laptop just came back from repair (the lid wouldn't latch closed) and that got fixed but I now have this new noise problem. The noise sound very much like the hard drive thrashing around at top speed - I'm always thinking I have a runaway process that needs force quitting. I originally thought it was just Spotlight re-indexing my drive after I restored the contents, but it's been about 10 days now. There's no way this is fan noise. Unplugging the power cord going into the laptop immediately stops the noise. While running on mains power, going into the Energy Saver prefs and setting the processor performance to 'Highest' ensures the noise is there full time, setting it to 'Reduced' stops the noise. Also, the noise goes silent during periods of high processor activity e.g. rendering a web page or searching for text in a document or double-clicking on an application (which actually initiates high disk activity). The noise volume is independent of the laptop's volume setting and the brightness setting.
    One thing I have kind of noticed is that the volume of the noise is sometimes significantly reduced if I quit Safari. If I then start it up again the noise stays reduced, but it eventually climbs back to it's loud volume. I'd be interested if anybody else notices that e.g. a logout followed by a login solves this temporarily. Anyway, that's my 2c worth...

  • How do I use Panorama / Tab Groups with the keyboard?

    Yes I know that CTRL-SHIFT-E opens the panorama window, and then I can use the mouse to organize my tabs into groups.
    But how do I do this with the keyboard?
    I've [http://lifehacker.com/#!5719596/switch-between-tab-groups-in-firefox-with-a-keyboard-shortcut read] [http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1705714 that] Ctrl-`should move me through tab groups. That doesn't work for me on my Danish keyboard. (Where the ' and ` chars are weird. But is how they are on a valid standard Danish keyboard) I've tried changing the keyboard to USA and then moving through tab groups works fine.
    In short: Pretend I don't have a mouse. How do I use Panorama / Tab Groups?

    Sorry. These are both known bugs:
    [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=587010 Bug 587010] - Add keyboard UI for manipulated groups and tabs in Tab Candy
    and

  • Brand New MacB Air and i haven't been able to get passed the format which has had to be done twice because, I have a French Numeric Keyboard and Language in English.  The minute I type in my password, the keyboard gives me letters that i did NOT type.

    I live in Switzerland and can only buy a Mac Air with a French or German keyboard, no chance to buy an English keyboard Mac here,.  When setting up  I chose the French numerique keyboard, although there are two choices French or French numerique.  I put in my language as English.  When all was set up I came to the start page and had to put in my password, by the grace of g....I just happened to see the first letter I typed before it turned into a dot.  My password which was supposed to start with the number 2 showed a french e with accent before it quikly became a dot.
      Because of the dot system, this meant that I had no clue what the keyboard was typing as my password ...........and true enough my password was not accepted despite my trying all combinations.  I have had to reformat twice now thanks to Apple Chat and both times my password was not accepted.  I am in the process of formatting it again, this time on my own.  If the Start page does not accept my password again this can only mean that the Mac left the factory with faults.  I could not be more disappointed with the money spent and the time and trouble that Apple Chat and I have spent in trying to correct a brand new out of the box Mac.  I have a cheap Toshiba laptop also with a french keyboard and english language which gave me no trouble at all.  I am not impressed with the so called King of computers!  First of all the dot system is daft.  People want to be able to see and confirm their passwords before they are set for good.  Second,  this problem is going to give me a lot of grief.  Switzerland business is not renowned for its after sales service or the time it takes to do repairs.  When I had an issue with my Vaio laptop which was still under warranty, they kindly picked it up from my house, repaired and promptly returned it.  How's that for good proper service.

    i didn't read a lot of your 2nd paragraph, but it seems like the password is the issue, right?
    do a true clean install
    reboot your machine and hold down command+option+r, you should see a spinning globe - if you don't see the globe or anything that reads internet recovery, shut down and try again
    at menu, chose disk utility and once there, find your HD on the left side, select the physical name and erase it as mac journaled
    exit disk utlity
    at menu, choose install OSX
    this time, when it asks for a password just hit continue, it will let you complete without a password
    you should be able to get into your laptop, now figure out what password you'll be able to use with your kb issue

  • I have a new mac book pro which i use in england but I need to use German charachters frequently, is there a way of having both visable on the keyboard?

    For example so that I can just press shift or another key to get the German character.

    Some may already exist, but you will have to learn them.  On my old system these can be found through keyviewer.app  For example, if I press option+s I get ß   Umlaut is a bit cumbersome as option+u then the actual letter.  It may be possible to bind a key to do this function, possibly through System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts
    I have old, old references for utilities that let you rebind keys to other functions, and you would have to see if they have modern equivalents.
    Ukelele Mac OS X Keyboard Layout Editor - http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=ukelele - mostly useful for character, not function mapping.
    Check Butler, ikeys, quickeys or Spark

    Brian - The batteries are fine and there has only every been one keyboard paired with it. We have tried my MacPro keyboard as well, and it will not even recognise that there is a discoverable keyboard nearby.

    I am not familiar with Citrix Reciever but is it possible it is open or being used in another open app?
    Try quitting all apps then try again.
    Quit all apps: Double tap the Home button and swipe the app preview page up for each open app

    I have a Macbook Air that had some coffee spilled on the keyboard and as a result the plus/equals key is no longer functioning. Can I use a program like Ukelele to re-program another key to do that function? Can I re-program a function key to do this function?

    Water + electronics do not mix.  Something was damaged insode, and the logic board may be corroding as is.
    Take it to a Genius Bar for an evaluation and repair estimate.
    This is accidental damage and not covered by warranty.

  • Exchange a brand new computer because of the keyboard layout ?

    Hi !
    I'm currently in Finland for work, and I bought a Macbook Air, it's brand new so.
    But I didn't thought of the keyboard layout, which is of course Finnish;
    Do you think I can exchange this MBA with a one with the correct layout back in my country;
    Or is it better to return this MBA here, and buy a new one once I'm home ?
    I'd like to be able to return or exchange the MBA in my country, is the refund/exchange policy international ?
    Thanks

    The European law state you have anyway a 7 day open box return policy for this kind of product, I think I'll go to the store and ask if they can exchange it for one with international/US keyboard or give me a refund if they havn't got one.
    I got a callback appointement with Apple Support France tomorrow (my country) to ask them if it's possible to use the warranty to exchange layout. But as you said, I don't think it's possible since the keyboard is working perfectly fine..
