Disguising my use of Mac Mail
Can I make the email messages I write and send in Mac Mail appear to come from my company (Windows/MS Outlook) mailbox?
With pop mail, the reply to address is shown in the recipient's mail. The reply to address doesn't have to be the sending address of an e-mail. Some mail programs a let you set the reply to address.
You could set up a another account in mail and see if it does what you want.
Mail: preferences: accounts
Click on the plus sign to create another account. The + is in the lower left-hand corner of the window. Fill in the e-mail address of your work account. The e-mail address appears to be the reply to address. Click on server setting. You need to provide a valid outgoing mail server (smtp). the server should be from your other account. It should not be your work account. It does in have to be your e-mail address you filled in above.
You may want to copy yourself with the e-mail. Click on the composing tab and check the automatic option. Pick either CC or bcc.

Which os version are you using? It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions. As well as the version of Mail you are using which you also did not mention. -
Okay, so I really need some advice. Because the gmail account I once had connected to my mac mail is now deleted, so I can therefore not use my mac mail at all. And I'm wondering if there's some way to fix this and set up my mac mail and connect it with another email account.
I'd be really grateful if you'd have some advice to give.iCloud is not supported on 10.6.8, the minimum is Lion 10.7.2.

No error messages or anything? If your OE is still running and is using POP, there won't be any email for you to retrieve with your iPad because OE has downloaded the email to your computer. To sync email between your computer and your iPad you need to use IMAP settings on both your computer and iPad, not POP.

Open Mail Contacts and Calendars in System Preferences, select Hotmail, enter your userid and password. -
Setting the browser to use in mac mail
my mail.app is suddenly using IE when I click on an email link.

How do I change the hostname used when Mac Mail sends EHLO
Hi All,
I work for a tech support group and one of our clients is experiencing some trouble sending emails. When they connect to their outbound mail server Mac Mail sends the EHLO command with a hostname like 01:23:45:67:89:ab.home
Another Mac on the network sends a hostname like 00:A0:C9:14:C8:29.home2
So they appear to be the a Mac address for the computers NIC followed by a generic location in this case .home, not sure if thats a generic Mac thing or something they chose to configure but because the hostname is not an ip address and contains ".(dot)home" the outbound mail server our client uses believes it to be a domain so then rejects it as an invalid domain when a lookup on it fails.
I've changed the hostname of one of the Macs using the command "cutil –-set HostName new_hostname"
This has changed the hostname when checking it by the hostname command in a Terminal but Mac Mail still persists in using the old hostname. We've tried rebooting the machine and rebooting the machine with the left shift key held down as I believe this does some kind of rebuild of configuration files, but still the old hostname is send when Mac Mail sends EHLO.
How can I force Mac Mail to pick up the new hostname or is there something else I need to do to change it?

Are you referring to the Mail.app under Tiger or the
new .Mac account webmail interface?
If the Mail application, you cannot use Panther's
Mail.app with Tiger just as you cannot use Tiger's
Mail.app with Panther, etc.
More detailed information is required regarding

Disk storage used by Mac Mail?
I was trying to figure out what was eating up my iMac's hard drive and came across the surprising fact that my IMAP accounts using Mac Mail as the client involve many GB of disk storage. [Mail is not the worst offender, but it is puzzling.]
Can anyone explain what the client storage is for? I thought in the IMAP world the messages reside on the server and I expected that only indices with subject lines would resid on my disk. Obviously this is not an accurate picture, at least for Mac Mail. [I have clients for 3 IMAP servers on my Android phone and there is no comparable storage used there.]
Is there a way to clean out my client disk storage without deleting the messages from the server?
Thanks for any help.One of IMAP's advantages is it's synchronization features so you can work from multiple clients and not miss much, especially when not connected to a network. Turning this feature off requires you to have an internet connection to read and manage your email. It will therefore limit how much email you can search through with Spotlight, and also the options for backing it up and restoring it with Time Machine if you inadvertently delete an important message.

Hello, this question may sound silly, but I was wondering what is the icon of a box with an arrow. Once I press that button, the e-mail dissapears and I can't find it in any of the mail folders. That is the Archive icon. You should only see it if you have a Gmail account.
iOS 4 introduced a dedicated Gmail option when adding a mail account to your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
One of the advantages that came with this is the ability to Archive your mail directly from the iOS device’s Mail app instead of deleting it.
Essentially you will see the word ‘Archive‘ when you swipe right on an email instead of a red Delete button.
When you Archive the mail goes out of your Inbox and into your All Mail folder just like in Gmail.
To toggle this feature between Archive and Delete do this:
1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars
2. Tap your Gmail account
3. Toggle Archive Messages to ON for Archive or to OFF for Delete
You’ll notice two differences in the Mail app screens.
Firstly, the red Archive button will change back to the traditional Delete button and secondly a little trashcan (instead of a file box with arrow) will appear on the lower toolbar when you have an email open for reading.

Just started using my Mac Mail program instead of web mail. When I went to attach two pdf files, one attached as a file, the other inserted all the text into the body of the email message. How do I get it to attach both pdf's as files?
I think you're confusing two different things. If you attached PDF files and one of them displayed the PDF icon in the message window, that means it was more than one page. If you saw what appeared to be the actual document for the other PDF file, that means it's only one page and it's normal for it to display that way.
However, I seem to recall there may (or should) be a button at the bottom-right of the message window that allows you to display those files as icons, even if they're one page. If not, there's a third-party addition you can use to add that feature:

iCloud is free providing you require no more than 5 GB of storage, which for a mail account only is more than ample.
You do not actually need to update from OS X 10.5.8 in order to use iCloud for mail only. You could simply migrate from your MobileMe account at Move
If you did wish to update your operating system you would need to purchase a copy of Snow Leopard on disk and install it on your computer, update it to the latest version of Snow Leopard, then purchase lion from the Mac App Store (The Mac App Store is installed when you update to OS X 10.6.8)
Whilst I am aware that you wish to read your mail through a web browser interface, there is no reason that you cannot read iCloud mail from the mail application on OS X 10.5.8. -
Iphoto will suddently only use entourage, NOT Mac Mail

My iPhoto(5) has suddenly started using entourage for the email function even though I do not use entourage as my regular mail app. I use the Mac Mail app and have never used entourage and when I went to the prefs in iPhoto to change the email app, it wouldn't let me check Mac Mail(it was shaded out) I've never had this problem before. I haven't made any major changes on my ibook at all so I'm at a complete loss. Any help would be appreciated.

AhrumThanks!! I would like to use mac mail...but I am getting frustrated with it. initially I couldn't get it to send either from mac account or pop account although it would receive from both. I received the smtp error message other threads are reporting. I solved the mac mail issue thanks to another thread (changing the port to 587), but I have tried several of the fixes found on my POP account to no avail...receive but won't send. I suppose I could stop using my POP account and just use the mac account...but that would require admitting defeat I've only been a mac user for weeks and I'm totally sold on it....figured out everything but this so far.....
