I'm having random freezing/lock ups in Windows.  It can happen anywhere between 1 minute to 5+ hours.  It's completely random, doesn't matter what I'm doing.
I have the latest chipset and nVidia drivers.
    Memtest passes 8+ hours
    Orthos passes 3+ hours
I've cleared the CMOS and loaded optimized defaults
I've tried both IDE and AHCI
What happens is everything just freezes, I can't move the mouse and can't ctrl-alt-del.
    Anyone have any ideas?
Update:  I switched to BIOS 1.2 and so far everything seems OK, though I lost the option to change the command rate on the RAM.  I'll post back in a couple of days or if it happens to lock up again.

  • Firefox is freezing (going to a black screen) whenever I rotate a web page from portrait to landscape view on a stock Motorola Atrix on a stable wifi connection. How do I fix this?

I'm running a stock Atrix with Android 2.3 (gingerbread). Yesterday afternoon I noticed that Firefox was taking a good 30 seconds to open whenever I tapped the Firefox icon on my phone. It's also freezing/going to a black screen anytime I rotated from portrait to landscape by rotating my phone. When this happens, the phone itself doesn't freeze (other programs still work if I hit the home key), but it takes a couple manual on-off cycles of the screen to wake Firefox up. Is there something I can do to fix this annoying problem without installing and reinstalling Firefox?

I have also found that unchecking the "Use hardware acceleration when available" option solves this issue. This option is in the Advanced section, under the General tab.

  • Constant stream of lock ups with Lion 10.7.2

At my wits end since upgrading to Lion (10.7.2).   I get a constant stream of application lock ups (beach ball) on every app I try:  Firefox (8.0.1) , intermitent connectivity to Internet (although I know my connection is good); App  Store unable to connect; iTune unable to connect to store; Parallels Desktop locks up; Outlook (Office Mac 2011) locks up, Time Machine locks up, and more not mentioned.  None of these seem to occur at the same time; it's more like the app that decides to not work is random.  Firefox is good but App Store will not connect;  iTunes is good, but Firefox will not connect.
Each time I'm forced to restart or shutdown only to have similar, but not the same, errors after I log back on.  The errors (lock ups) started right after the upgrade and have gotten progressively worse as the days/weeks go by.  At the point now where the PC is completely unreliable.  It's a crap shoot to find out what is working and what is not.
I've tried about everything mentioned in the forums -- verified/fixed permissions, used Mac OS install DVD to verify/fix HDD issues; no help.
Prior to upgrade, I had zero issues running SL -- all of this started with Lion.

In any case, shouldn't Software Update recognise what I am running and what is needed to update it successfully?
To a point. It will inform you of a system update, as with Lion 10.7.2 for example, but that is not the combo update. I set my Systum Updates to install manually, if I see an OS update, I always go to
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/
And choose the Combo update whice is always a little bigger, but a cumulative install as mentioned. Always appears to be more stable.

  • T400 Windows XP Random Freezes / Lockups (no BSOD) - Intel Wireless issue?

    Hi,
I installed Windows XP Pro SP3 on my new Thinkpad T400 purchased a few days ago. I installed all the latest drivers and thinkvantage software from the drivers matrix.
For two days now the system randomly freezes. The screen freezes, i cannot move the mouse or keyboard. Some FN buttons like the Thinklight still work, the rest does not and it ultimately requires a force power off by holding the power button pressed.
Interestingly enough the Wireless symbol still blinks even when the laptop is frozen. When i turn off the wireless switch, the bluetooth icon will turn off, yet the wireless KEEPS blinking (normally both turn off when the wireless switch is turned off).
I originally had the lenovo intel wireless 5100 drivers, now tried the intel.com drivers, no avail, same issue. The system also freezes when just sitting idle. I have not yet tried if the freezes occur with wireless turned off, will try later...
Kind of annoying as i had various BSODs due to the lenovo intel Matrix Storage driver (the original intel one made it go away), now this problem...is XP just not really supported by this machine?

  • Constant Random Freezing with iPhoto 6.0.3

I've been having the most frustrating time with the latest iPhoto 6.0.3 update. Ever since this particular update, iPhoto has constantly been beachballing, and I have to force quit it almost all the time. There really is no pattern to when it happens. It could be when I am impOrting photos from my new Kodak V530 or it could be when I am browsing through pictures. Initially I thought it was my camera, but then almost any action that I do in iPhoto results in a beachball.
I've tried using BatChomd, to fix the ownership and permissions. This morning I tried to use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library, but of course, somewhere during the process, iPhoto froze and I had to restart it, but it kept quiting anytime IPLM tried to reimport the photos from where it froze. I've also deleted the iPhoto preferences.
I am at my wits end at what to do. I have over 5500 photos and am starting to get concerned that I may have to reinstall OS 10.4. I have not tried using iPhoto with another user account though. Will that change anything? Any help would be appreciated.
    TIA!

I am having a similar problem to aiquille's. In my case, any time I try to go back in the photo library file beyond the last 2 or 3 import-downloads from my Canon A80, the little round ball starts spinning and iPhoto in effect freezes. Many of the files I imported from iphoto on my older computer (iMacG4) to my iBook G4 come through as blank gray rectangles or they don't come through at all and I get a message saying they are unreadable. Several times I have seemingly lost the entire library of nearly 5,000 photos and then when I try to rebuild, many of the photos won't come through. I know they are there somewhere in the computer, but I can't load them onto my iPhoto library. I am not a computer geek by any stretch, so please reply so an idiot can follow! Sorry! Many thanks!

  • Constant freezing, lock-ups and beachballs with new MBP - out of patience

Posting here as my guess is this is Leopard related. I have beachballs all day everyday. Nearly every program. Yes, yes I have repaired permissions many, many times. Yes I have booted to the instal DVD and done a repair disk.
My machine is freezing constantly - to the point where computing is no longer enjoyable - it's work. I have 1/10 the problems with Windows XP on my (work-provided) Thinkpad.
Is this OS still unstable - or is it time to look elsewhere. I just bought this supposedly "top flight" MBP. Up til now this has been a huge, huge disappointment. I don't even know where to turn to now.

    Hi mate
I had the same Problem with my Macbook Pro as you have at the moment. I drove me crazy!
But I guess, I found the solution for me! Hope I cant help others too.
After the Freeze, I found out in the console that my mdnsresponder Service had a problem. It's a Service necessary for Bonjour.
Since I disable it, I had not even one single crash/freeze anymore.
So its worth a try for sure.
    Just follow the instructions:
Load up Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app) and type the following.
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
To turn it back on, just do the opposite:
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
That's it. Hope I can solve your Problems too.
And please APPLE fix this bug ASAP!

  • MBA screen randomly freezes, locks up after upgrade to Mavericks

Sometimes my MacBookAir5,2 freezes, not allowing any input from the keyboard and trackpad (I don't use/have a mouse) except for the power key to force quit it. It happens AFAICT randomly, maybe while I'm browsing. In this case there're no crash reports or related messages in Console.app by the time it locks up.
Other times it freezes and WindowServer crashes and I'm logged out. For that you can check the reports below.
I don't know if both problems are related. This all started when I moved to effing Mavericks from Mountain Lion (which was pretty solid and I'd probably return to).
I reset the SMC a couple of times to no avail. Any hints as to what could be causing it or how can I further troubleshoot this problem?

I agree with Bob, run EtreCheck and post the results here.
A couple of questions. You mentioned resetting the SMC, have you tried zapping the PRAM? If not, you can do this by:
Shutting your Mac all the way down.
Restarting your Mac and immediately pressing the Command-Option-P-R keys simultaneously.  Make sure you press the keys before the gray screen comes up.
Hold those keys down until your Mac reboots again and you here the startup sound.
Let go of the keys so your Mac reboots as per usual.
Also, how long after upgrading to Mavericks did this problem start?

  • G5 randomly freezes/locks up

Help. I have a first generation powermac G5 (specs follow) that has been a great and reliable machine, until about 2 weeks ago. I don't know if this coincided with a system update or our changing internet providers whatever, but here's the deal:
A couple months ago we changed from cable internet (which was great) to AT&T wireless 3G internet with the USB modem (mediocre at best). the G5 did fine with it for a couple weeks, then out of the blue, started locking up on me. Initially I thought it was spotlight, and "MDWORKER" was in fact taking lots of CPU, but now that has settled down, but the system locks when there is NO apparently load on the CPU.
Sometimes the whole system just freezes, but Sometimes I lose function ONE app at a time! Safari will freeze, then Limewire, then iTunes, then eventually even activity Monitor in the Dock will freeze and the whole system will just sit there totally locked up. Generally the HD will continue hitting intermittently. Sometimes the system will go to "Sleep" - screen will blank and HD stop hitting. Sometime it will wake from sleep and still be frozen (i.e. screen will come back on and I again see the spinning disk) , sometimes it won't wake from sleep.
I've run Disk Utility several times - as per usual it will report issues with permissions and advise "Permissions repair complete" ( I always run Permissions repair twice, have always gotten the same results since the machine was new), Verify Disk always reports the HD is fine. SMART status remains "Verified."
I suspect the internet connection - Sierra Wireless Watcher, as I'm able to boot up and run Disk utility without the system freezing. But no hogging of resources is reported by activity Monitor while I'm logged on - even when it freezes there's no report of CPU hogging.
    Any ideas?
System is PowerPC G5 - one 1.8 Ghz CPU
1.5 G ram, internal 160 GB Serial ATA HD
    OS X 10.5.6
    Sierra Wireless Watcher internet software
typical apps I've used "forever" - Safari, iTunes, Word, Limewire

    Hi TomFromBama-
Have you checked to see if there is an update available for the Sierra Wireles Watcher program? I checked the website but could find no Mac-compatible updates.
I suspect it is the Sierra program. You may want to try actually removing (un-install) the program and see if it is the culprit.
    Luck-

  • How to fix freeze/lock ups when opening Burn tab under iTunes Preferences

Played around the past few nights with two PC's with the same problem after upgrading to iTunes 6.0. Would open burn tab under preferences and promptly lock up iTunes. Thought it was a driver problem, etc... Thanks to Toonz, here is what solved it simply for me on both PC's:
Run iTunes Help, CD Diagnostics, Run "CD diagnostics" and save output file from CD diagnostics somewhere on your PC (not even sure it's necessary to save file) and you should be able to view your burner tab and the CD/DVD drives preferences. Seems that iTunes CD diagnostics file gets corrupted, and needs updating after updating iTunes.

Silver, thanks for posting these instructions which were originally posted by MacMuse on the following thread.

  • Machine freezez/lock ups when using password protected certificates in IE 11 Windows 8.1 Pro

When using certificates that have a password enabled and private keys we find the machine hangs up competly with the memory usage jumping to 99%. The main process being the Local Secuirty Authority Process that causes the machine to lock up. The work
around we have is to remove this certificate and import a new certificate making sure we un-tick the check box for private key password.
    Not sure if this
KB2813237 is linked, but this hotfix is available for Windows 8.1 Pro OS.

    Hi  Simon,
You can try that suggestion and check whether it is solved and give your result, if there is any other issue, you can post it back.

  • Constant restarts and lock ups

My Droid Maxx is 1 year 6 months old.  It's to the point where it constantly restarts itself, locks up for no reason, or has to be restarted because it's doing nothing.
This has been going on for about a month and I'm fed up.
I've tried clearing the memory, running in safe mode, and doing a fresh restart on the phone after reformatting it.  None seem to help.
Can any offer any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
