Disgusting Skype ads

Since a couple of a days ago I've been getting these absolutely disgusting Skype ads on the right side of chat windows as displayed in the screen shot at the bottom of this post.
I've tried this, but it doesn't work as I hoped. What happens is that even though the ads disappear, the ad side bar remains in place, which isn't all satisfying.
Is there anyway to get rid of this Skype team's failure?

I've found a related thread (linked below), but the solutions in there do not work for me. Do they work for anyone else? Any other ideas?

How can I get rid of Skype ads on a Mac?

I'm running OSX 10.6.8 and have Skype version 6.15. When I open Skype Home a very large square ad pops up with annoying "meet singles in your area" and so on. I've searched for tips and tricks on google to get rid of this advertising but it seems every fix is for windows. There are some recommendations to install an older version of Skype but someone else found out that Skype won't allow you to use older versions and forces you to update as soon as you launch it. I'm sure there is a crafty way to get rid of the advertising. Nothing in the Skype preferences is helpful (I tried preferences-privacy- and unchecked "allow Microsoft to use your Skype profile information to show you more relevant ads in this application") This was unsuccessful even after logging out-quitting- and restarting. I also went to "notifications" in the Skype preferences and tried to uncheck "display visual notifications" and that was also unsuccessful. Enter 'How to disable Skype ads and banners' into Google for a resume of options that account for most systems. However, be careful where you download info from. CNet, for example have ways to help, but I read that CNet are unreliable and have been known to inject Adware or other matter into their downloads.

Loud, annoying skype ads

I'm watching a video in another window and getting loud skype ads from my skype window. It's very annoying and hard to watch a video with it. Even if I click on the ad to pause it, it still gives me sound every so often. Right now, the ad is centerpoint energy. Please fix!! Thank you.

I am having the exact same problem. It happens while I'm in a call or if skype is even open in general, and I'm doing something in the background. I don't mind the video ads, but the fact that they make noise makes absolutely zero sense to me, as this is an app for calling.. I've noticed them getting less and less but I did have one last night.

Block Skype Ads Quick and Easy

Hi everyone, I was trying to find a way to block all these annoying ads that the new Skype has introdused.  There where a couple of ways to actually achieve this but most of them where not working after Skype was updating. Below is the way that works regardless the Skype version as it 'hits' directly in the source, the ads themselfes.  1 Press Windows+R and type C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts   OR 1. Navigate to the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ , right click on the hosts file and hit Open (or edit with Notepad++ if you have it)2. Select Notepad or any other text editor you prefer
2. Add at the bottom of the file the lines below: # Skype Ads Blocker
127.0.0.1 rad.msn.com
127.0.0.1 live.rads.msn.com
127.0.0.1 ads1.msn.com
127.0.0.1 static.2mdn.net
127.0.0.1 g.msn.com
127.0.0.1 a.ads2.msads.net
127.0.0.1 b.ads2.msads.net

3. Save and restart your Skype app.
What you are basically doing is blocking the servers that Skype is pulling the ads from.  If you have any problems after applying this fix or you want to see these beatifull ads again (you must be drunk to do so! ) simply remove the lines you've added in the host file. Hope this helps someone. PS1: Tested to version 6.16+PS2: This should not breach the Terms and Conditions/User Agreement with Skype as you are NOT manipulating or editing Skype itself. You are simply blocking traffic from some specific servers ( just mentioning in case we have people starting a catastrophe reply marathon )

etc seems to be hidden within the drivers folder. In Windows Explorer you can click on the address bar and enter the path to that folder manually:C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc Note that you might need to edit the host file using admin rights. Skype Ads Randomly Playing Sounds During Calls

I've been having random sounds play while in meetings and realized it was due to Skype ads on the homescreen. The sounds are can be music or some random ad-voice. I've managed to make it stop temporarily by clicking "Home" button. However, this nusance persistantly occurs. This is extremely annoying and embarassing as a majority of my Skype calls are business related. I've read several existing threads (most archived) and nothing has provided any real help in resolving this. I'd like to know if Other Skype Users are encountering this irritating issue, and/orHow do i prevent sounds eminanting from Skype ads randomly playing at will?? Sorry to hear about the Skype ad playing audio by itself. Can you share a screenshot of the ad which would help us identifying the actualy ad? Do you see the ad on top of the conversation window or in the Skype Home screen that is shown when you don't have a conversation opened?
Finally can you let us know which country you are located in? I dont know what ad it was - it has two guys in the image. I never pay attention to skype ads. The ad sounds play from both the homescreen and the in call screens. For me it's happening more often from ads on the homescreen. When I'm not on a call the sound randomly plays. When i realize its from the homescreen, i click the homescreen button and the ad sound stops and refreshes so I really have no idea what ad this is. SUGGESTION: What makes more sense to me is providing users with an option to permanenly turn off ad sounds for ALL ads. Me personally: I don't want to keep coming here to these forums to complain about different ads making different sounds - further deeping this awful UX experience. One universal - turn ad sounds off solution seems the most logical. It be easier for folks there to dev and include that option rather troubleshooting these types of issues on a per-ad basis. I'm located in the US.

Skype Ads

Hi, I have just talked with my friend about cooking and then I can see ads related to pans and pots sales. Is it new feature how you target your ads or is it just a coincidence. That is pretty cool....

Well I think it's just LOVELY not having more than 6 words on a single line! I suppose, after all, it is my choice to not have the chat window take up my whole screen, so I can talk with people and also do other things. I mean, who wants an insanely expensive machine that is only a unitasker?! That's just silly right? To think you should have a laptop or computer that is capable of doing more than once, and the applications on it should allow you to do the same. It's not like we live in 2015 and we have technology capable of allowing us to do more than one thing. And we haven't had this technology for some time now.
In fact, I sent a wonderful little message to Skype about my feelings of this super-fantastical, extra special, hap-hap-happy feeling inducing new 'feature'.

Skype Ads showing in chinese?

A few days earlier, my Skype account was suspended due to multiple login attempts, ( a result I suspect due to a virus/ someone trying to hack my account. )
Since then I've been getting this: on my home 'page' after logging into Skype.

I believe it is an add for skype- I can't really tell. But point being how do I fix this? (yes I've already run scans on multiple viral protection programs. I suspect my skype account was at risk due to using someone elses computer to log in.)

This is not an add, but it looks like you have been invited to ad your account to Skype Manager.

Skype call ends, suddenly activx error and my AV b...

This happened last night and It happened again today. I was in a call with a friend for about 5 hours, as soon as the call ended I get an Activex error: "One or more ActiveX controls could not be displayed", This appeared again after I hit Ok. I have gotten this error previously before I didn't worry too much about it, but then I notice my Anti virus (Microsoft secuirity essentials) is flipping out telling me its blocking something. Immedietly afterwards I ensured that my Anti virus, Java, windows updates and everything it told me to do on the above page. Ran a full scan and it came up with nothing, everything was fine. As I said before it happened again today; Skype call ended, activex error, then MSE reporting it blocked harmful software. After this happened I installed a bunch of windows updates and started looking around, and saw that people reporting that Skype ads have been compromised and have been receiving malware. Seeing this I decided this might be the cause as I don't go to potentually harmful sites. Far too Paranoid.
Has anyone else been having this problem?

Yes, exactly the same tonight. A call I was in got dropped and I had an ActiveX error message popup followed by MSE immediately throwing up a hit for this 'Blacole' virus. I don't know if anyone can shed some light on whether damage will have been done or not.

I'll probably be formatting and throwing Skype in the bin prior to changing all my passwords anyway. This wasn't the first time I had the ActiveX bull**bleep** relating to a skype ad popup either :[ I'm curious - are you from the UK? I read about people trying to block ads and the tip wasn't working because people in different locations were recieving different content.

Skype Premium Account; still getting pop-up ads.

Ads are popping up in the client for Skype credit and Skype premium, despite having a paid premium account in good standing. I contacted support and was told by two different agents that I had to purchase Skype credit on top of the Premium account to get rid of these ads.
http://www.skype.com/en/premium/ specifically states that a Premium Account has NO advertisements, not SOME advertisements. This smacks of false advertising.
In addition, I get an error pop up in the client if I try to save my options settings with call forwarding enabled that states "You need to have some Skype Credit to forward calls to mobiles or landlines" despite that being included in my premium subscription. I can set up call forwarding via the website with no trouble, and it works fine, but then I am unable to change my skype settings without deactivating it and going through the whole process again to get it active.

Skype How-To video ads

Help in banner ads. Seriously? I have been using skype since way before Microsoft owned it. Y'know, back when it was good and MS wasn't determined to kill it stone dead by trying to make it "trendy" and in the process accidentally making it unusable. (Hell I remember that ancient bug where you could steal being the host from someone. 06-07, good times.) I would go on a rant about how ugly and wasteful (of space) the new 7.0 UI is, but that's pointless as MS never listens to anyone with any amount of negative feedback. I kind of wish they would market the blinkers they're all wearing, would probably make the world a wonderful place to live. Anyway! Went off on kind of a tangent there. Like I said, I've been using skype longer than I can even remember. So now, the fact that the space at the top of my IM windows is being taken up with banner ads to beginner tutorial videos is their next master-stoke of crotch kickery. I have no need for these tips, and I run in split-window mode with each IM window at minimum size, so that space is at a premium... And right now it's being taken up by a banner ad that isn't even making anyone any **bleep** money. I don't need this help! It feels like because I block their actual ads their punishing me with patronization. xD TL;DRDoes anyone have any idea how to turn the how-to tip ads off? (Ironic, I know.) I don't really hate that they exist (unlike normal ads,) because I'm sure they are helping some people... Just not me. I don't need them, they're making my Skype experience worse. (Much like every update since Microsoft... Other than group video, that one was good. Didn't even mind paying for it.) The weird thing is, they weren't there yesterday and no updates have taken place... They'll probably disappear of their own accord soon enough, but I thought I may as well ask you fine people anyway. <3~ P.S. Yes I have looked through options, yes ads are disabled. I even have Skype's ad server blocked in my hosts file. If there's a simple option somewhere that I've just missed, feel free to make me look like a fool. This is a feature I probably shouldn't advertise here, but you may want to take a look at this plugin: https://github.com/dlehn/Skype-Utility-Project It should be able to solve your problem. Other than buying Skype credit, I think there is no "built in" option to free the space taken up by the banner ads permanently.

Skype Subscription, still see ads.

Hello. I've had a skype subscription for years now. In the far past I did not see any ads, however a little over a year ago I started seeing advertisements. I've been in contact with Skype support multiple times and I have always been told that this is a bug and it will be fixed next patch. I've updated multiple times and even got the new update with the new design. I still see advertisements.
From what I know this shouldn't be happening if I have a subscription. Can you please offer some solution for this problem? I see advertisements on the home screen and on top of my chat windows.

Are you using the same account you used to sign in here on the Skype Community to sign in to your Skype account? You can verify that by using the "Sign out" link from the menu "Skype" in Skype for Windows desktop. This will take you back to the sign in page and you can ensure there that you are signin in with the correct account that has the subscription active.
If you still see advertisements as a next steps we would need Skype logs from your instance so our engineers can have a look what's going wrong in your case.

Skype: The new NSA tool? Targeted Ads?

Couldn't think of a better title but recently I discovered some interesting things that might make people want to question whether they should use skype or not. So, we all know that skype is now Microsoft's product and MS controls it completely. Skype used to be P2P, which meant if you said something, only you and the person you said it to, woudl know. Now, it's going full cloud. Which means, MS now has a copy of everything you have ever said, or ever say, and may even have enough data on you to know what you're going to say.
First, lets address the first thing that is 100% chance of happening.
Targeted ads. Everything you say is being watched for key words that allow MS to target an ad at you. Ads tailered to your chat history. Enjoy your ads!
Now, here is another thing that is likely to happen, I'd say about 65-70%.
Microsoft is going to share everything you have ever said via text, voice, or video, with the NSA regardless of what you want. You have no choice. Just like MS has no choice, but they'd probably gladly do it just because. Just like Google.
So, what does this mean? Your chats are no longer private. Skype/MS is now using everything you say against you in some way whether it is targeted ads or otherwise.
Unless, a skype developer comes here to say they aren't going to do either of these things. But then, there is a chance they would be lying too. However if they did, someone could use that against them if they ever found that it was a lie. However, if the topic is locked or deleted or developers don't respond, then the things I have mentioned are definately planned features of the new skype. Enjoy!
Unfortunately, I don't know of any messenger that exists anymore that is any good. Skype was the last one I had, and now MS owns it. :/

Would you prefer that eBay still owned Skype? You know the non commersial party that owned Skype since 2005, no chance for adds there?
That being said, using a MS account and managing Skypes rights to use targetted adds etc (from your own account), really only leaves, the adds for Skype itsels (and some MS stuff), here. Not an issue.
Skype is in effect a phone company, and have to adhere to the laws all phonecompanies must follow, both in the US and elsewhere, if the Call phones feature din't exist, NSA or other government bodies, woluld not have any way to listen in on Skype.
If you (yes you), set Skype up properly, you will not be relayed, meaning that Skype is still p2p (not txt messages in newer versions). In the previous versions of Skype you talk about, p2p was not by any means guaranteed, your conversations would then run through public owned computers running Skype (on a decent line), now all relays are owned by MS (Skype).
And, having any amount of charge on your account will remove the adds.

Skype is playing audio ads.

Skype is interrupting me with loud and annoying audio ads. Well, sorta. It's running Anyclip ads...which THEMSELVES run audio ads, say, for a John Deere tractor. This is UNACCEPTABLE, and I believe it's against your own terms of use. I'm watching a video and suddenly an ad is playing from nowhere...

They want us to see their new advertisements so they make more profit; they don't care how bad they are at programming and how bad they are at developing Skype. Luckily, there is a solution to get rid of these advertisements and make Skype better (although it still has too many problems than the older versions). 1. Open-up the control panel.2. Open-up "Network & Internet" then "Internet Options".3. Go to the "Security" tab.4. Click on the "Restricted Sites" icon, then the "Sites" button below it.5. Type "https://apps.skype.com/" (without the quotes) into the text box and click "Add"6. Close and apply the changes.7. Why the free version Skype for Windows Desktop is the only one with ads?

Why? as the title ask? All the other Skype program on other platforn e.g. Android, iOS, Mac doesn't contain any ads, like the phone / tablet version does not seems to have one. The Mac version I don't really know, but people who uses skype on mac tells me there's no ad in their skype. Well maybe if there are, it might be not as annoying as the windows desktop version and they might have not noticed. I don't really care if you put ads in the program it's free anyway, but don't put and use ads that make the program looks cheap and annoys it user to use program. Anyway, I believe skype is seriously needed to be the main messaging/videocall app for windows (like mac's iMessage). Especially with the release of Windows 10 and if you're going to be that, putting such intrusive ads in the program is just not going to cut it, if you gonna put ads, do it right (at least). Seriously your ad placement is just like saying F**K you i'm going to put ads whereever i want. Skype is part of Microsoft now; It's very funny to see that Skype's on Windows (the OS Microsoft make) Desktop platform, is the skype platform I personally least like to use (I have use skype in android phone and tablet too, and on Mac). Like seriously, If you work with Microsoft, shouldn't you make a skype version that's bundled to Windows as Messaging service, like Windows Messenger back in windows XP days?
