Disk 2 problem - what should I do?

I am reinstalling Tiger on my MacBook Pro (Core 2 duo, 2.2 Ghz) but Disk 2 seems to be damaged because whenever I insert it, it says that there was an error in the installation and won't continue with it. There is no way for me to install the system again without the sotware that comes on the second DVD, and nothing changes if I restart or if I insert Disk 1. It does not give me the option to go back to change the installation options so the laptop is basically useless at the moment until I get my hands on some Disk 2 that works (and my MacBook Air with Leopard didn't work - I didn't expect it but was curious)

You have to insert Disk one and Force Shutdown, start the Install process, but use the Custom. or Option button to cut down what gets installed, uncheck Languages, Printer Drivers, Fonts , & Applications that you don't need.
This should allow you to at least get a minimal system up & running.
several have had this 2nd disk issue, might call Apple for replacement(s).

    Hello!
When there is unauthorized modifications on the iPhone Apple doesnt replace the product. Unfortunately you will need to get a new iPhone!
If you could have contacted Apple when you broke your screen you would be eligible to get a replacement after paying the Out of Warranty service fee.
    All the best!

You can disable autoupdate by following these steps:
Go to main menu > Tools > Options > click on Advanced tab > click on Update tab and then click on the round radio button that says ''Never check for updates (not recommended: security risk)''

  • Game froze my MacBook Pro, now I have internet problems-What should I do?

    Hi,
I recently bought a game to play on my macbook pro, it is Sims Castaway Stories for Mac by Aspyr.
My laptop meets/exceeds the requirements to play it.  It only uses little ram and hardrive space.
I installed it a few days ago, my laptop started to get really worked up 30-60 mins into playing the game.  My laptop was making A LOT of noise and got pretty hot, I could hear that it was making a lot of effort to ventilate the heat out and to keep my laptop cool.
About 5 hours into playing the game My laptop completely froze and I had to force shut it down and restart.
Everything seemed fine when I restarted it.  I played the game the next few days and it ran fine for over 5 hours.  However my laptop is still very hot and noisy every time I play the game, and even when I don't have the game open, but just the disc in.
When I have the game running and go on the internet the videos I watch are distorted, images are fragmented + oddly colored, pages load in computer code, and pages won't load occasionally.
I have the same problems with my internet when the game disc is not in my laptop. (disc out= no super hot and hyperventilating laptop problems)
I have even uninstalled the game completely and the internet problems are still there.
I use google chrome, but I have the same problems on safari.
My home windows pc has the same internet problems as well, my second windows pc does not.
Is this a bad internet connection problem or has this game damaged my laptop?
    What should I do?

The Internet is sent to you in packets with an error-detection code on them. Ones that come through with errors are rejected. Distortions and problems with display are caused by problems on your computer itself, not by bad data from the Internet.
Most games, including ones tied to the Internet, work your computer very hard. It will get hot. When it starts to get hot, the fans will go on high. Putting the DVD in the drive makes a motor spin it up and that causes heat as well.
Do you have enough RAM memory to support all the things you are doing at once? If not, your Hard drive will be on all the time to do Paging to simulate more RAM memory, and spinning its motor all the time will make your Mac really Hot.
To cool the underside by convection, at least 3/4 inch (20mm) space is needed underneath. A smaller space is not effective.

  • Startup Disk is full, What should I do? PLEASE HELP FAST

Since I got that message, I have done the following things:
    Empty trash and downloads
Use YASU app to delete caches
I only have 14GB out of 119GB so my mac is really slow?
What should I do to save loads of space?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tatamkino

Your space is on the low side, but it's not low enough to cause significant performance issues (unless you're working with really large files, etc).  You'll definitely want to free up some space though for starters just to see if that has any impact on the performance problems you're seeing.  You can try something like OmniDiskSweeper (free).  It will scan your drive and show you where the majority of your space is being used.  Lots of times people find they have tons of old video podcasts which can eat up space quickly.  When deleting files, be sure you know what they are.  Don't just delete files to clear up space if you're not familiar with them:

  • Missing hard disk space. What should I do?

Last night, my available diskspace was 20.02GB, I woke up then it became 16.41GB. I got scared so I restarted my computer then it became around 14GB. It came into my mind that it may just be the effect of sleepimage so I decided to delete the sleepimage but it only got reverted back to 16.41GB. I don't know where the other available space has gone. I'm not downloading anything or even doing anything. What could have happened and what should I do?

    It didn't solve the problem.

Try someplace like ifixit.com for advice.

As others have noted, this is a classic kernel panic (KP) and should happen with a new machine. AppleCare's Express Lane. Do note that if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Whine Problem, What should I do?

I purchased a Macbook Pro $2499 model about 5 days ago. Two days ago I noticed the annoying 'whine' sound while in a quiet room.
I then visited these forums and found the posts from other users experiencing this issue. From there I went to the Apple store where I purchased the machine and requested a exchange for another model to see if that would fix the problem.
They then said they were going to have the technical guy take a look at it. He took it into the back room where it was quiet and came out telling me it was normal.
He stated they recently released a patch to lower the sound and that all the other Macbooks including his have this problem.
From the posts I have read I get the impression that this is not true, unless users who do not have this whine is just a lower amount of whine.
In any event, they are willing to let me upgrade to a 17" Macbook with only paying the difference between the two models.
Should I do this or live with the whine or wait it out or what?
    Any advice would be great.

I brought my MBP into the Apple Store this weekend to hear it from the horses mouth. They explained to me that the noise I was hearing was normal for the intel processor, and actually went ahead and showed me the mirror widget trick to silence it if I thought it was an annoyance....though, he mentioned how it will cut into battery life. He offered the possibility that Apple might be working on a firmware/software update fix, but this was just a guess.
I personally believe they all have the whine. It's probably worse in some computers than others. Mine becomes the loudest when I'm running off battery power. But I only notice it in a silent room. One of my co-workers doesn't believe what he has is the whine, even while I've pointed it out to him. So I can see why some people wouldn't think they have it. It seems like most people who acknowledge they have the whine and have tried to get new models confirm that each new MBP they get has the whine.
I've decided its a quirk I can live with, because so long as the TV is on, and the windows are open, I can't hear it at all in my living room. Just in the dead of night or early morning. And the mirror widget does work. I guess I see it as a minor sacrifice in deciding to get a Rev A machine, and having a super fast intel processor. Obviously, I'm not 100% happy with the machine, but its other amazing features tend to over shadow the whine.

  • Need to re-install Lion due to disk errors. What should I back up first?

I am very new to Mac. I installed Lion about a month ago, and I have had periodic hangups ever since. Today, I did a disk verify, it found errors, so I attempted to repair from boot. That failed too, and message was that I need to remove any data I can and reinstall. Sigh.
I have a Time Machine backup from about a week ago. Should I run a new backup, or will that just capture the error that is requiring the reformat?
Should I just capture the files from the past week, and restore from the TM from a week ago?
Anyone have any advice? I haven't been on Mac long enought to even know what files I need to make sure I move across before doing a clean install.

I appreciate the help, but I am not quite following you.  You're saying, instead of doing a fresh TM backup, run CCC to a different drive. Then do what's necessary to get the Mac drive fixed, and reload everything form the CCC disk?
Why not just do that with TM? I'm sorry to sound obtuse, but this stuff is new to me. I really appreciate the help.
I currently have access to everything, I just want to do what's needed before that changes, if the HD is failing.
    Thanks!

  • Nvidia driver causing problems what should i use?

    Hi,
Just switched my hard disk to a temporary machine and the nvidia card on it is causing crashes and random freezes on my machine.
Since its just temporary, I can't be bothered to mess around with the configuration at the moment.
Could someone please tell me what would be the default driver for me to use?
I don't have need for compositing or 3d acceleration.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ali

Well seeing as how you don't need 3d perhaps nouveau might be worth a shot: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nouveau
Word is that eventually it will replace the standard "nv" driver and it will be incorporated into the 2.6.33 kernel.  In my experience the nouveau driver is faster than the standard nv.
To use it you will need to remove your current nvidia drivers and then change your xorg.conf to use nouveau.  In addition you must enable KMS which is easy enough, see the wiki.  I just happened to change from the nvidia blob to nouveau last night after installing KDE 4.4... So far I am satisfied and feel better about supporting the open source driver.
