My Windows 7 Professional desktop system hard disk got corrupted and I took the opportunity to install an SSD for a new system disk and reinstall Windows.  The system is up and running on the SSD, with my old system disk now used for storage as it is still readable.  The only Adobe product I have reinstalled so far is Reader XI but I would like to reinstall Elements 8 and Acrobat 9 without taking up more licences as both are also installed on my laptop.  Can you point me to the best way to do this?  - Thanks

If you have the two allotted activations already and one was lost on the hard drive that failed then you need to contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations.

  • Help - The chain of virtual hard disks is corrupted

I took a snapshot of a VHD that I tried to expand to 40GB. After expanding I tried to restart the VM but got the error that "The Chain of virtual hard disks is corrupted".
Apparently because I expanded the Parent VHD it threw up this error ( i assume because the snapshot differed in size?)
    This led me to Vhdtool which I ran:  vhdtool.exe /repair parentvhdfile.vhd snapshotvhdfile.vhd /quiet
This appeared to have run okay. However when I went to restart the VM again I got the error:
    Servername Failed to start
Microsoft emulated IDE controller failed to power on with error - the chain of virtual hard disks is corrupted. There is a mismatch in the virtual sizes of the parent virtual hard disk and differencing disk.
Failed to open virtual disks. The size of the vurtua;l disk is not valid.
    etc...
I notice that my parent VHD = 40GB in size, whilst the Snapshot (avhd) file = 109K
I think I need your help, I don't know what to do!!

If you made changes to the parent drive, your chain will be corrupted.  Changes to the parent disk invalidate all the child disk.
Do you have a backup of the original parent disk?

My iLife v9.03 Install disk is corrupt. Where can I find a download for the the app (not update) at apple support online ?

I have an iLife 11 disc that doesn't work very well so I tried creating a disk image of it with Disk Utility.  It took two tries but finally got a disk image that I could use to install the iLife 11 applications. Give it a try.

  • ASM disk header corruption

    Hi.
If the header of an asm disk is corrupted, then I drop the corrupted disk and re-add, will the data in the disk lost?
    Thanks.

fschk requires the file system driver to support repairing the file system - in other words, fschk itself does not do the fixing (it does not understand the underlying file system format). Quoting manpage, "+fsck is simply a front-end for the various file system checkers+". So if there is not a fsck.asmcfs (or similar), fsck can not do anything ito fixing invalid structures on that file system.
As for the kernel keeping copies of a file system's superblock - not sure why it would be doing that for ASM. It does not manage it as a file system or service I/O to it (the ASM devices are opened using the O_DIRECT flag).

  • ISCSI Software Target - Disk is corrupt (locally) not on on the target

    Hi,
I have a Windows 2008R2 server on which i have installed Microsoft iSCSI Software Target. I have created a Virtual Disk and an iSCSI target configuration on this server.
The target is a virtual server running Windows 2012R2. The target has the virtual disk mounted succesfully as a R: drive and i can use it, create files, delete files with no apparent problems.
However on the Win2008R2 box where i have created the virtual disk, i cann see that the virtual disk is also mounted and generates hundreds of errors in the system logs: "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run chkdsk
utility on the volume n" The goal is to have the Virtual Disk mounted on the target server but not on the server where the Vdisk is created. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you're trying to mount iSCSI disk from the multiple initiators @ the same time it's not something you can do straightforward because NTFS is not a cluster-aware file system and has no clue about somebody else changing metadata in-place. There many
options (using CSV, using SMB on top of iSCSI, using cluster-aware file system and using distributed lock manager), see detailed description and options listed here:
    iSCSI instead of SMB
    http://www.starwindsoftware.com/forums/starwind-f5/trying-clear-this-use-iscsi-instead-smb-t1392.html
(hosted on StarWind site but is true for any Windows and SAN implementation including one you use)
Hope this helped a bit :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • 2 out of 3 voting disk gets corrupted

    O/S - Oracle Linux
    DB Version - Oracle 11.2.0,3
    Three node RAC
Voting disks is 3 in Normal redundancy out of which 2 disks gets corrupted.
I know the process of recovering the voting disk but I am not able to stop the cluster services and start the same in exclusive mode. I am always getting "Unable to communicate with CRS services" . I rebotted 3 nodes but the same issue persists.
    Any advice will be appreciated.

Is ASM used for OCR and voting disk storage?
This is the recommendation and the default - creating a normal redundancy diskgroup with an additional quorum disk (i.e. 3 disks in total).
There is an automated backup of the OCR. No backup needed for voting files. So it is not a disaster loosing the cluster's OCR and/or voting disks.
Assuming ASM and a diskgroup is used.
    Anything else on the diskgroup?
I recently had a similar problem. I used the diskgroup only for OCR and voting disks. Lost 2 disks. I shutdown the RAC. Started CRS in exclusive mode on 1 node. Launched sqlplus and dropped the diskgroup and recreated it with 3 disks (and a quorum). Restored the OCR backup. Confirmed the voting disks config (no need to change it as the underlying diskgroup did not have a name change).  Restarted that node. Forced a rebalance of the diskgroup. Then started the remaining cluster nodes.
There are Oracle Support Notes that describe these steps in detail. It should be relatively easy finding the note for fixing a 11gr2 RAC's OCR/voting ASM diskgroup.
If you have database data on it too - problems. If the remaining working disk is the quorum disk, then both mirror disks are toast. If not, you can try to force the disks online again - assuming disks are okay and broken path was fixed. Else add 2 new disks to replace the 2 broken disks and rebalance. Never done this myself though with a quorum disk..

  • Disk gets corrupted everytime I connect to my MBA

I connected my previous hard-disk to my laptop, and it got corrupted. I purchased a new hard-disk, copied everything from that Hard-disk to new one. After few days, my new hard-disk also got corrupted.
Few days later, I connected my friend's hard disk. Now his hard-disk is corrupted too. My guess is it is because of my Macbook Air.
Any ideas how to fix it?

  • How do i retrieve file vault protected files from an external hard disk that used to be my mbp's hard drive? the hard disk got corrupted and will no longer boot. I put it in an enclosure and attempted to copy my files but failed because of FV encryption.

This external hard disk used to serve as the main drive of my mbp. It got corrupted and the OSX would no longer load. I upgraded to a 500gb hd and used the old hd as an external drive. I tried to copy my files but i could not access them because of the filevault encryption. 110gb of hd space appears as used which means that my files are still in the drive. Is there a way to retrieve these files? thanks

According to your post, you're using Leopard, so FileVault only encrypts your user folder (unlike Lion). On the mounted external drive, in your user folder, you should see a file called username.sparsebundle, with username being your user name. Double-click that file to open it and it should prompt you for a password. Type in your password and the file will mount as a volume in Finder. You should be able to copy all of your files over.

  • Sol_10 x86 5/08 disk label corruption (yes i have searched...)

I am truly sorry if the following is going to be a "oh no not this again" issue.
I am having an issue with 3 of my disks having "primary label corrupt: using backup" issues. Here is what I have tried and what has happened thusfar:
first I tried format, which core dumped

Segmentation Fault - core dumpedok, thats wierd (and it does it with the other "drive type unknown" disks as well"). So I looked around and found a patch for format on x86 with a revision just a bit newer than what I had (137022-01 came with the install, I tried 137022-02's format command), to no avail (same response).
I then tried fmthard to try and read the label, which responded with "disk must be labeled first"
so I thought, ok, I will just use one of the working labels as a start (4 of my 5 disks are identical, so I figured I could fix the 3 bad ones using an existing disk label)
so I used fmthard again to write a disklabel that I had copied from the one good disk:
    {code}
    # fmthard -i -n "" /dev/rdsk/c1d1s2 > /tmp/partmap
    # fmthard -s /tmp/partmap -n "" /dev/rdsk/c0d0s2
fmthard: Partition 8 overlaps partition 2. Overlap is allowed
only on partition on the full disk partition).
fmthard: Partition 9 overlaps partition 2. Overlap is allowed
only on partition on the full disk partition).
expected one reserved partition, but found 0
    {code}
which I guess is another way to spell failure, as I still can't read a disklabel from the drive.
prtvtoc also reports "invalid VTOC" on the drives in question.
I have also tried booting a linux live environment, and partitioning these drives with one big solaris (code 'bf') partition on each. this had no effect on the issue.
I would like to point out that this very system was running solaris 10 x86 5/08 with the exact same harddrives 1 week ago. I had to re-install after some momentary laps of reason made me try out linux on the machine. this shouldn't have done much, as these drives have at one point been used in solaris, freebsd, and linux during their lives, and they haven't had much to do anyway, so I am confident in their current condition.
My big question is: why have multiple versions of format failed me? and is there any other way to give a disk a brand new disk label? there is nothing on the drives, so I don't care what happens to the data.
    thank you all in advance

thank you both for your responses.
you aren't going to believe this, but format now behaves! it seems as though after creating a zfs pool using the disks that crashed format, the disks now show up just fine under format, in fact format says:

  • Airport 802.11n Disk - File Corruption!

I'm seeing occasional file corruption when using Apple Disk. After copying files to an Apple Disk using a Mac mini via Ethernet, the files are not the same.
    myvideo.avi /Volumes/Adonais/Documentary/myvideo.avi differ: char 34439169, line 112648
Copying the file again usually results in a successful copy. Copying to a Samba share on a Linux server is 100% reliable, suggesting it's not a network issue.
I've tried two different USB enclosures with the same results. Both enclosures were problem free when directly connected to the Mac mini. The enclosure is connected to the base station with a Belkin hub.
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I've given up with AirDisk. The file corruption was too serious to ignore. I've plugged the HFS+ disks into the Linux server, mounted them (Linux hfsplus filesystem driver) and shared them using Netatalk. It's not quite as elegant but it's much more reliable.

  • Repair Disk Permissions corrupted a secondary user account

I've read various threads on this topic but none that have solved my issue.
I have 4 accounts on my iMac.  Account 1 is admin, Account 2 is "staff" and had access to almost everything, Account 3 is guest, Account 4 is for Apple TV streaming so we don't leave one of our accounts open while entertaining guests.
I was doing something that request that I run Repair Disk Permissions, which I did from the admin account. After doing so, Account 2 is pretty much read only: can't delete files off of the desktop, can't open certain applications, can't sync iphone to itunes, and many other little issues.  One of the issues during iPhone sync is that it cannot write to address book <which there are many threads out there on just this as well>.
It seems to me that it's a permissions issue but repairing disk permission isn't helping, as that's what seems to have corrupted the account in the first place.
What is the most efficient way to resolve this?  Should I create a new user account and move all the files over?  If I do that, will iTunes sync ok with the iPhone or will it not recognize it and ask to wipe the data from the iPhone?  What is the best sure-fire way to migrate Account 2 to a new user account and not lose anything in iTunes/iPhoto and still be able to sync with iPhone.
    Thanks!

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    sudo chmod -R a+rX
followed by a space. Next, drag the folder into the Terminal window, press Enter, and type your password; nothing will appear in the Terminal while the password is being typed. If you want to be able to make changes to the folder as well, use rwX instead of rX. You may need to log out and back in for the changes to be recognized. To turn it off, use go-rwX after the -R.

  • Disk Utility corrupt since 10.5.3 update

Has anyone else's Disk Utility been corrupted by the 10.5.3 update?
I updated last night and this morning it won't run and the icon is no longer the disk image but the default Mac OS icon (pencil, brush and ruler)
    Any ideas??
    Many thanks
    Patrick
Typo corrected in title by: Host

    Hi Patrick,
I'm assuming you mean the icon in your Utilities folder, not the Dock icon?
That sounds like a LaunchServices issue.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know
If that doesn't do it, you may be able to repair it with the 10.5.3 Combo Updater. This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Zip disk files corrupted

I recently mounted an Iomega Zip100 disk that was created in 2002 on a G4 under OS X something. Most files are OK, but several of the directories are corrupted and system thinks they're Unix executables and not directories. Icon in finder is a little terminal, and an ls -l command in Terminal does not show the initial "d". How can I change "-rwxr-xr-x@" to a directory so I can read the files inside?

Try changing the Finder preferences to show extensions. Log out and log in to restart Finder (or use Force Quit to relaunch Finder). See if those misbehaving folders have a .something extension. If so, remove the extension.
OR... If you do a right (control) click on the file in Finder, does the contextual menu show +Show Package Contents+ ? If so, select it to see if you can access those files inside.
