Disk access LED flashing regularly

Hi,
I have a recent (<2 months) installation of the latest Arch Linux on an AMD64 computer and I have noticed that the HDD access LED flashes shortly every 2-3 secs. My partitions are formatted in Ext4 and this flashing occurs even when I am just in the console and not using the machine.
Is this normal or should I start worrying about rootkits etc?
My thanks in advance.

My thanks for the replies, I tried iotop and enabling block-dump but both will not work, I think its because I am using a custom compiled kernel and I don' have accounting enabled, apparently. But I will be looking into this soon, perhaps rebooting with the Arch kernel.

  • Led Flash for Alerts not working.

iOS5 - Accessibility - LED Flash for Alerts turned on.
But LED does not flash when phone call coming in.
Anyone has the same problem. How to fix it?

I seem to have found out the problem.
It works this way. It the LED flash alert is already set to on, turn it off, then press the home button to return to home screen. Then go to setting and turn it on again.
It should work. The LED will flash only when your your phone is locked or asleep.
But however, if you somehow have turned your phone off, reset it or its battery runs out, it won't work again. You then have to redo the turn off and on process again for it to work.
This is true even after I have updated to 5.0.1 yesterday.
    This is definitely a bug.
Apple, please look into this too while you are working with the battery issue.
Thanks for your tip on making this LED work as an alert. It's too bad it does not work when the vibe/ring button is set to vibe.

  • Power LED flashes, firmware updates good, and can still access the router

I have a wrt54G first version as there is no version number. About two months ago, the power led started dropping out and with a reset worked for a day or so, then, it became worse, every hour, and now only a couple of minutes. according to the help side of this site, the router will not be accessible, but it is. I upgraded to the 4.7.1.1 firmware, the problem continues, un plug and start it up. Any ideas? Could it be the 12 volt power supply going bad or over shooting the power?

yes, that is the level, verified at the router. the help side of this site says that if the led flashes like this that it would be corrupt an un accessible, but a restart of the router stops it, and it is accessible, moreover, the upgrade fails since that is the level at the router. just that it is happening about every 15 minutes (8/3) - could it be that comcast is sending packets of ??? to blow out routers? Thee state they don't like people using routers - that you are not supposed to use more than one computer with their broad band connection. Yes - serious, the e have said this twice in the last 6 months. Don't know what it could be, Saturday - Sunday it has not dropped out at all

PowerBook G4 - Won't Start Up - 3 Strange Beeps then just LED flashes and sudden death - black screen.
Prior that the powerbook also couldn't start but I could see the Apple logo, so via fire-wire (holding T at start up) I backed up the hard disk.
Check via DiskToolPro the structure, defragmented. Via DiskWarrior rebuild the directory
and finally not been able to access the drive I reformatted the drive via fire-wire drive.
Re-started the powerbook holding C to boot up from DVD - nothing
Re-started again and it give me one long beep and black screen. An indication that my 1gig RAM is bad or gone (?) and the DVD is stuck inside.
Bought new one 1 gig, installed it and now I'm getting only three beeps.
I tried all, changed the slots several times and nothing.
    I tried more as:
c -- to boot from CD (again while the DVD is still inside and I cannot get it out)
cmd-opt-p-r -- to Zap the PRAM,
cmd-opt-n-v -- to clear NV RAM,
cmd-opt-o-f -- to boot into open firmware … and nothing. The DVD is in and I have
black screen with three beeps and flashing LED.
Do I have to replace the Logic Board?   (Anyone has a spare one ?)
But it is the faulty Logic board?
Could anyone help me out? Please.
I'm retired and I cannot afford a new laptop - and this powerbook was a great, great horse for me until that horrible set of three beeps.
Thank you in advance for any advice and help.

But it is the faulty Logic board?
There was a known issue with LBs in 15-inch PowerBooks with 1.5 and 1.67Ghz processors in which one RAM slot would fail. There once was a repair extension program that fixed the problem at no cost, but it is long-expired.
The problem with seeking a used logic board for these models is that so many had their boards replaced that it increases the chances of the boards in the used/pulled markets having the same problem you have now. The replacement program also came close to exhausting the supply of new boards,
If it turns out to be a bad LB and you can't find a replacement, consider how used computer pricing works: A used computer is worth hugely more in parts than if bought as a working unit. I.E, you can probably find a working PowerBook that will cost less than the logic bard alone. It also possible to find a used MacBook Pro for less that a replacement LB.
If you tell us your approximate geographic location, we can see what's available nearby. I'm also retired, and and visiting my wife's family this week so have even more time than usual to help you search.

  • Blackberry 9900 bricked with red LED flashing

My cell phone Blackberry 9900 was bricked last night. No special usage or status before. Now it can't be turned on any more, just the LED flashing. I have tried many ways to re-turn it on, not work. It even can't connect to computer. the computer is able to find it just when the red LED is lighting!
What happened on my phone? What can I do next? I must turn it on!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain directly connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB, not a cradle):
With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain an known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem. Note carefully please that "new" and "know good" are not necessarily the same things. While rare, a "new" battery certainly could be defective. Rather, the simplest (and least costly, btw) method to conduct this test is to find someone with an identical BB who has no issues...trade batteries and see what happens.
Good luck and let us know!

  • [SOLVED] Long time with excessive disk access before system reboot.

I feel I would be grateful for some help here. It's my first go at Arch Linux having used Xubuntu for several years. It may be I'm missing something obvious but then I would be happy if someone could point me in the right direction.
Problem: When I do a system restart by issuing
    $ systemctl reboot
    I get the following output
    Sending SIGTERM to remaining processes...

However, after the last line is printed, the system does not reboot immediately but hangs for about 2 minutes with heavy disk activity. I can't say if it is read or write or both, but the led of my HDD is lit constantly. When this activity stops, the machine reboots.
    $ systemctl poweroff
works as expected, i.e. shuts down immediately without excessive disk access.
I see this behaviour both with the installed Arch system and when I run the live installation/recovery CD. It is also the same if I boot into the busybox rescue shell and then restarts the machine from there. It also does not seem to matter if any partition on the disk is is mounted or not, the behaviour is always the same with 2 min. heavy activity before reboot.
    System setup:
Sony Vaio VPZ13. Intel Core i5 M460, 4GB ram, 2x64GB SSD in RAID0 configuration via bios setting (a.k.a. fake raid), partitioned like:
    windows boot
    windows system
    linux swap
    linux "/"
    linux "/home"
So it's a dual boot setup with Windows 7.
The raid array is assembled by mdadm, and I have mdadm_udev among my mkinitcpio.conf hooks (after blocks but before filesystems).

Since I have used Xubuntu without hassle for several years, I first thought the problem may be related to systemd reboot and something in my system setup. But I have tried the Fedora 17 live CD and rebooting there works as expected. So, since it works in one systemd distro, it should work with Arch as well.
Then I thought that it maybe had something to do with the raid-array, something along the lines of
    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=752593
    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=879327
But then I found the shutdown hook for mkinitcpio and now I see that the array is stopped and dissassembled. So thats not the problem either. (Or thats what I guess at least.)
Unfortunately I'm out of ideas. Any help would be grateful.

It turned out that the magic word for me was "reboot=pci" on the kernel command line. With that option set it works lika a charm The machine reboots nice and clean.

  • Unnessary disk access

i just installed Arch Duke some hours ago and then i did "pacman -Syu". everything is running fine but sometimes, 1-3 times  a day, i see unnecessary disk-access. when you access the disk e.g copying the files from one place to the other then you can see the red LED of the cabinet (representing the Hard-Disk) glowing.
i did not set up any cron jobs and nothing is running right now but my OS is accessing the hard-disk, continuously for 10 min. why this is happening ?

  • Led flash alerts not working in iOS 5

I have turned on led flash notification on and nothing happens when I get phone calls, text, e-mail etc. I have turned off the led setting and then turned it off the phone. I then restarted it and turned the setting back on and nothing happens. The light never goes off. I checked the light and it works fine. Any ideas on how to fix this?

  • Disk activity led

Is it normal that the disk activity led on the right side of my notebook (a lenovo 3000 N500 4233-5MG)
is blinking regularly even if there is no disk activity ?
I have installed a dual boot system with both Windows XP and Solaris 10 but I observed that there is no difference,
    the led is always blinking.

    Hi @Working_Stiffie
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a superb  place to find answers and ideas!
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I see you recently had the power connector cable replaced and now the LEDS in the lower left do not light up.  You are uncomfortable disassembling the notebook.  It is most likely a loose or not connected cable as you said. As you just had it repaired I would take it back to the repair shop and advise him of the situation.   He should be able to correct it for you.
Here is a link to  HP G50 Notebook PC and Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide that will go over removal procedures if you would  like to attempt this yourself.
    Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

  • N-79 LED FLASH LIGHT & CAMERA PROBLEM

i've had the n79 for slightly over a year. i can't say it's been problem free, after about 8 months i had problems with the screen when a pixel died in one spot and then across a whole row..it was under warranty so i got the screen replaced but currently i'm suffering problems with the camera and the led flash. a couple of weeks ago the phone got a bump while i was shaving. i checked it immediately. the problems i found was the battery had become slightly loose and the slider cover wasn't as taut as previously, now it requires me to slide it almost all the way to close it. Another problem was with the led flash. when i tried to take a picture the flash didn't work, it just stopped working. (the pictures are only reasonable in clear daylight and even those seem disappointing.) i thought it would resolve itself so i left it, while checking it intermittently. and a week ago it did work but only for a short period of time. Recently however the main problem seems to be that the Camera just switches itself on.. this is putting a drain on my battery.
i don't wan't to do a hard reset as i think i'd lose all the n-gage games i've bought.. is there any other way to resolve my issues...especially the led flash as the pictures i can are rubbish. can it be solved by a hard reset???
my phone model number is N 79-1 and the type is RM 348.the software version is 32.001
i unforunately do not have the phone covered under warranty...
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
    thank you all.

My camera flash started coming on to notify me of new emails. It started after the recent software update.
The solution to get the feature to turn off was to go into Settings... Accessibility... and scroll down to "Flash notification" under the Hearing section. There seemed to be a bug in the recent software update. This setting on my phone was already marked as Off, but I was getting the notifications anyway. To get the flash notifications to stop, I needed to turn the setting On and exit out of settings, then go back in and turn it Off again. This time the selection took.
There was another discussion in here that recommended turning the phone off and then back on in between making changes to the setting. For me, that step was not necessary.

  • Disk light rapidly flashing

I've been using a new T500 for a few weeks and love it, but I'm having a problem.  After I've been using it for a couple of hours I notice my hard disk light is flashing constantly and rapidly, like 10 times a second.  I haven't been able to tie it to anything I've done.  When it is in this state, some things start behaving erratically, e.g. a program might not come up when I try to start it up, or some progam menu functions won't produce any actions.  If I try a shutdown, the system hangs after all the normal shutdown windows are done.
I've gone into Task Manager and there are a bunch of processes that are doing lots of I/O Reads, Writes, and Others.  I start killing those processes till there's nothing showing disk activity, but the light is still flashing rapidly.  There is no swap activity.  CPU usage is minimal.
I'm running XP.  I have the encrypted hard disk option with password and fingerprint protection.  I use Password Manager with fingerprint access.
Any idea what could be going on?  How can I diagnose this issue further?
    Thanks.
    KenM

Update didn't apply properly. You will need to grab a micro usb cable and restore in iTunes

  • Why won't my led flash after turning it on in accesibility?

Turned on LED Flash for Alerts under accessibility and it worked great for a few days and now it's stopped.  What happened?   What can I do to get it to blind again when i get calls or notifications?

Never mind. I saw this in the forums after I submitted my question:
"hey everyone. try this before you make trips to the store. turn off the light in your settings and reset your phone. (hold power and home until the apple logo comes up). then when the phone has started back up, turn the light on again and test it ! ( send yourself a text and turn off your screen. you should get the flash when you receive your msg!)
keep in mind though it doesnt flash until you have your screen off.
i think the light must glitch out if you change the flash settings in your camera- and the program requires a restart. hopefully apple fixes this bug (:"
Did this and it worked =)
