  • How to take remote disk backup on AIX

    Dear All,
    I want to take a disk backup of our Development system. I will take the backup on an USB external HDD
    which is connected to a Windows XP system. Both the Windows XP and DEV system are on same local network. The external HDD has NTFS file system and has been shared. The server is on AIX 5.3 with oracle 10.2.0.1 with SAP ECC 6.0. Since I am new to AIX Operating System and have little knowledge about AIX, I am unable to access the shared disk in my AIX box. Once I will able to access the shared disk in the AIX system i.e. in the Development server and then only I can configure the corresponding file at SAP level and could take the backup. Please help me how to access the corresponding shared disk from AIX and what configuration I have to do at SAP level for taking disk backup.

  • Macbook pro won't boot and when I tried to back up the hard drive I got "disk utility can't repair this disk backup as many of your files as possible"

    My macbook pro froze and initially would not even recognize the power chord. Now it charges, but will not load up. I opened in in disk utility to try and back it up so that I could take it to apple to have it fixed but I got the message that said "disk utility can't repair this disk backup as many of your files as possible". How do I back up the files???

    Nichelle215,
    you can try the method described on this Apple page, in the “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility” section. (You can skip step 6, since you already know that your disk is irreparable.) Note, however, that this method is not guaranteed to work. Once you get your disk straightened out, you might consider purchasing an external hard disk for use as a Time Machine backup destination, so that a similar problem in the future won’t wipe out the only copy of your files.

  • Low Network Utilization in Remote Disk Backup via SAP FTP

    Hi gurus,
    I'm running whole online backup + redo log to backup my SAP server to backup server via SAPFTP (remote disk backup).
    I'm using 100Mbps network connection between the two servers, with SAP server configured to 'maximize data throughput for network application'.
    When I copy data from SAP Server to backup server manually, the speed is OK (around 98% network utilization).
    But when I use put command in program RSFTP002 (SAPFTP) for the same file, the network utilization is just around 10%.
    I use Windows Server 2003 x64 for SAP Server, and Windows Server 2008 x64 for Backup Server.
    Each has adequate RAM, 8GB for SAP Server and 4GB for Backup Server.
    Is this technical problem or is it because backup is considered background process, thus lowering its speed?
    Help will be very much appreciated.

    go read http://help.sap.com/saphelp_45b/helpdata/en/0d/d311324a0c11d182b80000e829fbfe/frameset.htm
    it's old but should help you nonetheless.
    I would not use SAPFTP as you found out, it is slow.
    use DD instead which is much faster.

    I've installed iTunes 10.4.0.80 in my Windows XP desktop.
    Iwant to backup my library on DVD, but I cannot retrieve the Disk Backup command.
    On previous ersions it was under File --> Library, where is it now?

    This procedure posted by rodfromnewark on another thread worked for me (thank you rod!):
    For PC users, before reinstalling, try this:
    Start-> Programs -> Accessories -> (Right Click On Command Prompt) ->Run as Administrator
    then type in:
    netsh winsock reset
    hit enter, restart PC, open iTunes. Hopefully fixed.

  • Is anybody using RDX Removable Disk Backup System

    I´m sorry, this a new post about an old discussion but I would like to start a fresh dialogue for today; 2011.
    Is anybody using RDX Removable Disk Backup System (with or without T.Machine).
    An affordable alternative to LTO tape? Proved compatibility with Mac OS?
    Is it possible to insert a RDX drive as a second optic unit inside a Mac Pro?
    Any happy RDX+mac user, so far?
    Thanks.

    I'm not using RDX on a Mac, but I do have one client I'm using RDX for a Windows server.  While RDX is somewhat cost effective over LTO/Ultrium, IMHO it probably wouldnt' be the best for Time Machine.  Time Machine expects the previous backup to be online and if you switch cartridges, TM would have to create a new backup from scratch.  Then if you switch back the cartridges, your TM bundles are out of sync.  I'm not saying it's not possible, but that this is not the "normal" way TM works.  So you need to understand what you need to do if you were planning to switch cartridges.  (If you weren't planning to switch cartridges, then a "normal" external or internal hard drive is more cost effective than RDX.)
    RDX cartridges are basically 2.5" SATA hard drives.  The RDX "drive" is, for the most part, just a SATA to USB converter.  (Or SATA to eSATA or whatever interface you get.)  On the PC the advantage is that you don't have to "safely remove hardware" and you don't lose the drive letter.  On the Mac, a "normal" external hard drive is almost as convinient as RDX, since there's no drive letter to worry about.  The RDX's advantage on the Mac would be not having to plug/unplug a USB cable on the external units.  I suppose you could get an internal eSATA RDX to put into a Mac.  I don't know of anyone doing that.
    I did use my client's USB RDX drive on his Macbook, just to see what we could do with it.  While it worked, we didn't do extensive testing so I can't comment on long term satisfaction with OSX.  But so far it's been reliable with Windows for almost two years.  (Windows Server 2008 with Backup Exec 2010.)  However since RDX is basically just a hard drive, I've gotten the client to realize that in a year or two, we'll probably have to start replacing cartridges, assuming his data size doesn't grow beyond the RDX capacity.  This is based on the assumption that the RDX cartridges would have similar longevity to laptop hard drives, which have 3-5 year warranties.  We probably will get more lifespan than that, but better to have the client plan in the budget now, rather than have backups fail.

    Hi All,
    I become successful in taking offline backup, but I got following problems
    1. Unable to take offline backup when SAP is running.
    - Brtools is unable to stopdb
    2. Unable to take online backup
    -  log is showing
    "cp /oracle/SID/sapdata2/sr3_1/sr3.data1 /sapbackup/bectbizf/sr3.data1 failed"
    I changed ownership of my /sapbackup directory from root to oraSID:dba, I provided full permission to this folder also.
    I tried to execute above command manually then system saying invalid  parameter line..even I can't copy this data file to tmp directory also. I tried to copy by root, sidadm and orasid but no success.
    Finally I stopped SAP, then I executed offline backup...then brtool started the backup activity.
    But this process doesn't make sence while considering first problem.
    I am unable to track...why brtools is unable to stopdb for offline backup and why I am unable to take online backup.
    In my solman (which is based on windows), I am able to take online / offline backup by using brtools without error, but in Development (on AIX) its nt happenin

  • Disk backup support

    Hi. It's me again.
    I'm reading the b14234.pdf document.
    At page 19 there is a table indicating that disk backups are not supported with Secure Backup. This table is OK?
    Thanks a lot.
    HeCSa.

    OSB is a tape management software integrated in oracle. It is true that you can allocate channel from RMAN to tape as well as disk but to use tape you must use some tape management software and here OSB comes into picture AND if you dont want your backups on tape then you can simply take the backups using RMAN on disk without using OSB. In short whenever you need tape backups you need OSB or some other Media Management Layer (MML).

  • Disk Backup Location settings

    Hi all
    In EM I have set the Disk backup location setting to G:\Backup and in RMAN at the command line I can see that CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT 'G:\Backup\%U';
    However when I run the command BACKUP DATABASE the backup is still generated in the Fast Recovery Area that it was originally set to.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

    ThanksMay be you did not apply this setting.So connect database with RMAN and SHOW ALL then execute BACKUP DATABASE after that copy all results(including SHOW ALL) and paste here.

  • Performance statistics on disk to disk backup (Rman) on OEL v4.5

    We just migrated from AIX running Power processor to Oracle Enterprise Linux v4.5 running on IBM xSeries 3850 M2 (Intel Xeon Quad Core). The RMAN backups are taking twice as long as on AIX (it was taking 3.5 hours and now it is taking 7 hours) to landing space (disk to disk backup). Does anyone have any suggestion how to narrow down the different?

    This is a very complicated issue to handle in this forum. This could be anything from an RDBMS setup issue to a host configuration issue to a SAN or network issue. "Slow performance" just isn't specific enough to go into here.
    If you can, I recommend that you open a trouble ticket with Oracle (http://metalink.oracle.com).
    Or, search the Knowledge Base at that same web site.
    Other folk here may be able to help, though.

  • Removing disk backups after implementing Veritas tape backups

    I was using RMAN with a catalog to backup to disk. Now we implemented RMAN backups using Veritas tape backup using the same catalog and I want to remove the old disk backups.
    When I "crosscheck backup" and "crosscheck archivelog all" then "delete obsolete" it errored with the following:
    ==================================================================
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-03002: failure of delete command at 08/29/2005 13:53:39
    RMAN-06091: no channel allocated for maintenance (of an appropriate type)
    ================================================================
    I assume it is seeing one of the tape backups and wants to detete it.
    How can I clearout these unnecessary disk backup sets without causing any problems?
    Thank You,
    .....Kevin

    I found the solution:
    RMAN> crosscheck backup;
    RMAN> crosscheck archivelog all;
    RMAN> delete obsolete device type disk;
    -- Assuming redundency was 1 only one set is left in the disk directory...
    RMAN> list backup;
    -- Find the backup set key which lists the DISK backups.
    -- List all the BSKeys
    RMAN> delete backupset key1, key2, ..., keyn;
    -- The files are gone...

  • Restoring Sol10 using whole disk backup package (Acronis)

    Anyone ever tried backing up the disk that Sol 10 is installed on
    using a whole disk backup package?
    I've tried doing it using Acronis backup which allows you to boot from
    CD, and backup to USB hard drive. Anyway, it seemed to work when I
    restored it.
    Only problem is when the machine now boots it seems to run some sort
    of Acronis pre-boot and then GRUB appears on the screen but then it
    hangs.
    Any ideas at all? I'm just wondering if just the boot sector/bit needs
    to be fixed?

    Sounds like either the device links are incorrect, or that it got installed onto a different partition after the recover.
    If you haven't already, you could try and boot to failsafe (or from CD/network), mount the root-disk under /a and run devfsadm -R /a .
    Never tried acronis, so i don't know exactly how it functions.
