"disk can not be erased" error message on Time Machine back up
I keep getting a "disk can not be erased" error message as I try to restore a recently repaired computer from Time Machine Backup. I did a Disk Verify and Permissions Verify. No help.
Help!
Use migrate rather than whatever it is you are doing.. TM has loads of limitations and I suspect you are trying to do something that is not allowed. like recover from an older to a more recent OS..
Read the info from Pondini about recovery and migrate here.
http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
It is somewhat out of date but still useful.
No luck tell us what version OS is in the backup and what version is now on the computer.

After reformatting my 1 Tb WD ext drive and tinkering with the "exclude these items" list, I now get the following error message from Time Machine: "Are you sure you want to back up to the same device your original data is on?" I've reformatted in Disk Utilities...not sure what I did wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
Not sure what you mean by "booted" from it.
If the Mac OS is installed on the external drive, then it's possible to start up from it, just as you do from your internal drive. Please open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, and verify that your internal drive is selected as the startup disk.
Assuming that's the case, then it may be that your TM settings have been corrupted. Turn off TM, then move or delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. Turn TM back on, recreate your settings, and try again. -
I've recently received an error message from Time Machine that my Macbook Pro's sparsebundle is in use. What is this and what can I do about it?
This is asked at least 5-6 times a day here.
Look at the right hand column.. more like this.
It is a bug in Mountain Lion.
Read C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But the fast solution.. unplug the TC.. count to 10.. plug it back in. -
Can some one HELP me , I keep getting this error with my Time Machine Back up, "The backup disk image “/Volumes/JKPN Safe/JKPN IMAC.sparsebundle” is already in use.

I deleted a pop email account from mail. How can I recover those sent messages without Time Machine?
Thomas,
"Note that you were warned that this would happen and approved it. When you delete an e-mail account in Mail, you are shown a message like the following:"
You didn't read my problem - I said I deleted a POP email account. I always read the messages that pop up and in Mail when you delete a POP account - IT DOESN'T TELL YOU NUTHIN! It just deletes it - which *** for me. Fortunately, I had an iPhone and on that device I had about a 1000 messages that I could recover but on all my POP accounts I download them from the server onto my Mac so they were only on Mail (the really old ones that I wanted to keep.) I had to move them into another directory one by one basically because when I would move 50 some of them would move and some wouldn't and I never did figure out that problem. Basically the ones that would not move are the ones that were associated with my domain changes with GoDaddy, and there were a lot of those. Have no idea as to why only those were resistant to moving but I can get all that data from GoDaddy anyway.
This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often. ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL! ;-) -
Can not fine external hard drive for time machine sence lion was installed
I can not fine external hard drive for time machine sence lion was installed, it don't reconise it at all.
I have a Mac Mini (late 2009) and I have an iomega 1TB external hard drive connected to my mini via firewire and usb (usb allows me to use the usb ports on the external 1TB drive to daisy chain other devices). Since I installed Lion, my Time Machine and this 1TB drive (and its partitions) is finicky. Sometimes it is mounted and sometimes it is not. This issue has only surfaced post Snow Leopard and in the Lion era. I am not the first to say this but the whole reason I went Mac was b/c of Vista. I am beginning to think that Lion is the new Vista. Sorry for the latter, just venting... b/c this ain't the first issue with Lion.

Im getting the following error message when Time Machine is trying to back up: backup disc image/volumes/data/my computer.sprasebundle is already in use. What does this mean? How do i correct? Thanks!
90% of the time, all you need to do is power off the Time Capsule, wait a few minutes, and power it back up.
If no luck, then go to the more sophisticated fixes in the link above. -
Attempt to install Mountain Lion has highlighted need for internal disk repair. Even after "repair" ML still says disk is damaged. Attempt to restore from Time Machine back-up failed - cannot 'see' internal HD to restore to. Help! Has attempt to install ML caused these problems or just highlighted existing need to Repair Disk? Even so, why can back-up from Time Machine not see the internal drive to restore to?
Csound1, William & Sig .... thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I fear you are right - I'll need a new disk. I'm booked in at the Apple Genius Bar in Bordeaux, France on Wed ... quite a challenge as my French isn't great! The current internal disk is 500gb, does anyone know whether I can upgrade my 21.5" iMac (circa Oct-2009 vintage) to a larger size internal disk, 1Tb or even 2Tb? I already have one external 2Tb drive and another one on order (I have masses of media stored and more planned as I've just taken up photography). Seems a bit of a pain managing with only 500gb internal storage. OR, can you advise me on how I can store all my photos on my new 2Tb external drive - I can't seem to figure out how to set the path for iPhoto to see them (I can't even figure out where they are stored right now!). Same with iTunes, how do I set the default storage to the external drive (I moved everything manually and then imported them all from the new drive - it worked but seemed very convoluted). Any advice on how to manage multiple drives gratefully received. And thanks again for previous replies.

Can I selectively recover files from my Time Machine Back-up?
After installing the most current apps from the App Store, OS X 10.8.5, Safari and iTunes,my system became disfunctional. I did not back up my system before this happened. Before these updates, I had the spinning beach ball on opening and closing apps and applications quiting or freezing. Eventually, after trying to repair by various means, I couldn't access my desktop. I went into Recovery mode and did a backup of my corrupt system and reinstalled OS. I have a good basic system now but now I would like to know, "Can I selectively recover files from my Time Machine Back-up?"
The basic answer is Yes, but it depends on what files. Can you give an example of what type of files and where they were located.

HT3228 Can not get email, error message says:contact your system administrator
Suddenly can not get my mail on iPad but can access on home computer. Tried reboot did not work. Error message says : system error contact your system administrator
Some POP email accounts don't allow multiple connections, you might be seeing some type of lockout.
Take a look at this Apple article for more information -> iOS: 'Mailbox Locked', account is in use on another device, or prompt to re-enter POP3 password -
Can't restore new hard drive from time machine back up
Looking for some help on this one....
Briefly: iMac 24" aluminium early 2008 (model 2134) trying to upgrade the original 320 gb HDD. So I bought a WD Caviar Black 64 mb, 6gb/s 1Tb drive, intalled it pretty smoothly and then using an install disc restored it from a time machine back up. That went fine then I could not restart the mac (kernel panic). So i trouble shooted with an extended hardware test, disk repair and everything seemed fine. I reinstalled my old HDD again and worked perfectly so I figured my iMac doesn't like this Caviar (due to sata3 perhaps??) so I went and bought a Seagate barracuda sata2 1 TB 7200 rpm and repated the whole process. Again everything went super smooth until the restoring process ended and the iMac was restarted. Kernel panic again. Already tried PRAM, option key. Booting from the CD or my old drive is not a problem at all but from the newly installed drive (x2) ... Impossible
Any thoughts ???
ThanksBooting from the CD or my old drive is not a problem at all but from the newly installed drive (x2) ... Impossible
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer except for the keyboard and mouse. Double check to make sure that you installed the hard drive correctly - http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Browse/iMac#SectioniMac_Num20
Select your imac then select hard drive replacement, and there are the instructions.

Can not open project - error message
I have a project that is approximately 100 slides (55KB), which I saved yesterday before shutting down my machine. When I tried to open it today, I get this error message .
Basically it is saying that it can't open the project because:
-The file is already open (which it's not)
-The file is damaged, for examples it was sent as an email attach and not correctly decoded (didn't send it as an attachment)
-The hard disk doesn't have sufficient available space (tried moving some things off my desktop to free up space, also tried putting the project on a network with available space and opening from there)
-The system has insufficient resources, close all other applications (tried closing everything else, still didn't open)
Has anyone ever gotten this message? If so, is there a way to resolve it and get the project to open? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated so I don't have to recreate all these slides.
Thank you,
AmandaHi there
If at all possible you need to keep your project on the local C drive. There are a great many hazards lurking about when you decide to place the project on a network drive and make edits to it as it is on the network. Many things can go so wrong.
Cheers... Rick

"Disk was not ejected properly" error message consistently
I have had my new Mac Mini for about three weeks. I keep getting an error message that the disk was not ejected properly. It pops up consistently about every 15 minutes or so while I am working. I am not ejecting any disks when it pops up. It will not stop and it is very annoying when it interferes with anything I am doing. I have to hit 'OK' every single time in order to get rid of it. Can anyone help me figure out how to get rid of this? I have read of a few other people with the same issue but no one seems to be able to offer any suggestions.
