Disk changed identiy. backups lost.

Hi,
I have been using time machine on my wifi network for a while now to back up my imac's 3tb internal fusion drive. I have a 4TB drive connected to a remote airport extreme and the backups have been going on for months without a hitch.
Yesterday, the airport utility came up to inform me that there is a firmware update for my airport extremes. I have 4 of them on the network, so i went ahead and upgraded the firmware on all of them.
This morning I came back to my imac to find time machine telling me "the backup disk has changed identity since the last backup, would you like to use it?"
I said yes to that, and after about 2 hours I got the error message that there is only 750GB available, and the backup would require 1.4TB... that looked worrisome... that's usually the kind of error i get when time machine doesn't notice all the other backups...
I entered time machine and yep, backups, none.
how do i get time machine to realize that this is a backup disk with tons of old backups going back months? i really don't want to reformat and lose all those. I really want to pick up from where I left off.
-Dave

Hi dkliman,
here is my work-around if that happens and happend to me a quite a few times, very annoying. As you probably know, but timemachine is not officially supported for use with WiFi disks connected via WiFi to an airport extreme base.
Delete the timemachine preferences in user/library/preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Delete the autentification passwords for the WiFi disk in the keychain
Select the backup disk in the time machine preference pane
Restart
Select the Wifi disk in the timemachine preferenc pane
The next backup should then add to the already existing backupfile incrementally instead of starting a whole new backup
Hope this hleps

you can't change the backup folder as far as I know, but you can choose to move backups. The information you need can be found in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4946
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system.   Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac:  ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP:  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7:  \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.
    Hope this helps

  • Changing iTunes backup destination folder

Hi, I am trying to change the backup destination folder from my laptop to an externa drive because I am running out of memory locally. Any advise on doing this is welcome. Thanks.

Believe me I am not an expert here, but seems like there are 2 processes to look at. One is the transit process (loading thumbnails from card to view on screen, and converting selected files to DNG). The second process is writing those files selected to disk. It would appear to me the process of writing to disk has lots of space, so the transitory process must use virtual memory, temp or a cache file and that has limited capacity.
Think you could test this by doing the process twice. Once the normal way to see if it has the usual error message, and once by dividing the process up. (Might have do delete the imported data on disk so each run is new.) Rather than selecting 8 gig of data all at once, try it with 2 gig. If it works at that level you can try it at 4 gig and so forth to see what your upper limit is before you start getting error messages. When reached you can either just learn to stay below it or figure out how to increase the limiting resource.
Interesting question, let us know what you discover. Thanks.

  • Some recent changes may be lost. Make sure...

    Hi Friends,
Recently - when I open iPhoto 6, I get this message:
Some recent changes may be lost. Make sure your hard disk has enough space and that iPhoto is able to access the iPhoto Library folder.
Photos imported to iPhoto, aren't saved.
And, when I scroll down the photos, the photo shows, then it changes to another one.
    Thanks for any tips.
    g4powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    paneltour
The message means just what it says.
You need to keep approx 10% of your HD space free so that the OS can use it for temporary files and virtual memory. Once you drop below this, things begin to go wrong. For instance
the photo shows, then it changes to another one.
is evidence of iPhoto having trouble accessing its' cache. A symptom of insufficient free space on your HD. This, in turn, may lead to corruption of your database.
This will cause problems with all apps, not just iPhoto. They'll begin to crash randomly, be unable to save etc.
So start making space on your HD.
    Regards

If the books were purchased at the iBookStore, you will be able to redownload, like the apps. Some other sellers, like O'Reilly, also allow multiple downloads.
If you have (or can install) iTunes on a computer (Mac preferable, not mandatory) and run it then plug the device in, does it show up? If the computer can detect it, you can and should do a complete backup onto local storage immediately. That can then be used to reconstruct the content of the device on a new or repaired replacement. If you enable encryption, even the passwords will get saved.

  • I've changed computers and lost my music?

I've changed computers and lost my music?  What to do? I signed in and a blank library came up.

Your music is where it always has been, on the other computer. Music downloads to the computer via which you purchase the track; you don't see it just because you log into the iTunes Store on another computer. If you still have access to that other computer, you can copy the iTunes library from that computer to your new one.
If, however, you don't still have access to that old computer and you are in the US, make sure you have at least iTunes 10.3.1, then go to the iTunes Store, log into your account, and click the new Purchases link under the Quick Links. The new iTunes in the Cloud service, currently in beta as part of iCloud, may allow you to re-download your purchased content (music, videos and TV shows are only available to US users at this time). You can also do this from an iOS device.
    For more information, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If you are outside the US, then you normally get only one download per purchase. If you don't have access to the old computer, or have a backup or have the tracks on a iPod or other iOS device, then you'll have to contact the iTunes Store, request a second download, and hope they'll make an exception for you:

Signing into an Apple ID is easy. Open whatever needs and Apple ID and sign in using the ID name, usually a email address, and the password associated with that name. you will then be signed in.

  • Disk Utility Image backup - 8 hours and counting. ?

So I'm doing a backup image in Disk Utility. Started up from the install DVD 10.6 and went into D U and making an image of my Macbook's (2008) HD (250gb) and saving it to a WD usb 2.0 external drive. I'm going on 8 hours. I know it takes a while but I swear my iBook from 2002 is faster on USB 1.0 . Is this normal? I feel like I would have been better off putting it in Target Disk Mode and used another Mac to back it up instead. I want all my data after the restore so I thought the image was the best way to go. This can't be the fastest way. Would this go any faster on FireWire? I know the file transfer itself can't take 8 hours can it? I'm miffed. Any advice?
PS - Used SuperDuper a month ago and that took 7 hours.

    Thomas A Reed wrote:
+_Also, why did you boot from the install disk? That is absolutely not necessary. I'd also absolutely, 100% recommend against using disk images for backup. Large disk images are too easy to corrupt, which will cause you to lose everything they contain. They're just not good enough for backups. Use [Carbon Copy Cloner|http://www.bombich.com> or SuperDuper instead...+_
    I was following Apple's instructions http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1553
I had it backed up in SuperDuper and Time Machine as well. I knew I could get all of my data with an image and I've never used SD for importing data, only whole disk images.
_+You didn't say how full your hard drive is. If your drive isn't anywhere near capacity, it shouldn't be taking that long. If it is too close to capacity, that could be part of the problem.+_
Yeah, I was at 240/250gb. I didn't think about that. Thats also good to know.
The external 1TB WD USB2 drive I used was the same drive that a few months back I transferred 900+ gigs to from my W7 computer with a esata drive. (1tb WD usb2 to esata 1tb through my W7 PC). While I know the esata is super fast, that WD 1TB USB2 drive "was" fast (35 - 50 sustained speed?) and it took maybe six hours for 900+gb. Thats why I'm confused.
All in all I really don't care if it takes that long if I know that ahead of time. It's one thing to hit a button and go to sleep, but another to get it done ASAP because it's 5am and I should have been done by midnight at the latest. I need to use it all day today.
    Thanks guys.

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

  • Get rid of message: "If you close the window, your changes will be lost..."

Whenever I enter text, then close the window, I get the message, "if you close the window, your changes will be lost. Do you want to close the window anyway?"
Yes, I do want to close the window, and I want to get rid of this message from popping up. Can't find it anywhere in Safari. Please help me out. Please, how do you configure Safari so this message will not pop up?

    HI David,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If you still see that dialog...
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
