Disk checking utility?

Could anyone tell me how or where I can get a disk checking utility for my ipod mini and how I would go about using it?

  • Disk repair utility & printer issue

I will admit right now that until last night, have never touched an iMac but I have a friend that due to health issues, needs a hand. Can I ask a couple of questions of this forum?
1: She has an external Lacie H/D that is making wierd noises after being knocked over. Her backup software says to run the Disk Repair Utility. I haven't the slightest idea where to find this Disk Repair Utility, nor if I can run it on an external drive.
2: Her printer, mac book and iMac were recently moved from one location to another home. I need her printer connected wirelessly to both computers. I was able to get her Macbook connected but I am having issues with iMac. Can I uninstall her printer and reinstall? Not even sure how to do that basic process so advice would be appreciated.

Disk Utility should be able to check the LaCie - whether it will be able to complete any repairs that may be needed will become obvious when it's attempted. Disk Utility is normally in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder.
Regarding the printer, yes you can uninstall it in System Preferences>Printers & Scanners (or similar wording depending on version of OS X). The +/- buttons add/remove printers.
If you still have problems, post back.

  • Help! After interrupting an installation of a program downloaded from the internet on my mac in a reboot cycle will not start, I've already done the disk check and it's ok and I reinstalled the OS 10.8 Lion

After interrupting an installation of a program downloaded from the internet on my mac in a reboot cycle will not start, I've already done the disk check and it's ok and I reinstalled the OS 10.8 Lion

In this case, I think that there's something damaged that can't be fixed just reinstalling OS X.
If you don't want to lose files, you will have to create a second partition in the hard drive and install OS X there, so you will be able to recover everything you need. Then, you will have to erase the first partition and reinstall OS X. Follow these steps:
    1. Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. You can follow the steps of this site to create a second partition > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
    3. After creating the second partition, close Disk Utility and install OS X on the second partition.
    4. When the installation finishes, open Finder and, in the sidebar, you will see the other partition. Open it and recover the files you need.
    5. After doing that, repeat the step 1.
    6. Select “Macintosh HD” in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    7. Close Disk Utility and install OS X on the first partition.
After doing all of these steps (you will need a lot of time to do this), you can delete the second partition you created and add the size of this partition into the first one > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU4.html

  • Why won't windows xp disk check complete until firefox cache is cleared?

Windows disk check with the fix unchecked is handy to use as a quick way to verify the disk is ok without a restart. Some time back, it started always stopping in phase 2 (index verification) with the "windows cannot complete the disk check". Running it with the fix box checked (which of course requires a restart) it ran. But I got the same result immediately after running the repair.I had set the problem aside but today started googling the problem and found a site where someone discovered that clearing the Firefox cache fixed this. Well, that seemed pretty stupid and unlikely to me, but I figure I had little to lose but time.
Well what do you know? Clearing the Firefox cache allowed the check to complete properly!
Question: Why is this? This implies that something of Firefox is running even when Firefox is not "running". Are we locking sectors somehow? Is the cache marked in some way that stops the disk check? Inquiring mind(s) want to know!

  • Arch disk check keeps spitting out strange error's after installing BT

    Hey guys,
Basically earlier today i figured i wanted to try out backtrack 4 but I could only have a maximum of 4 partitions on an hd at a time.
So i deleted my partition that contained my arch home directory (didn't really have any data on it and i figured i could just make a new one later) to create an extended partition to put backtrack on. Well all went well except now when I select arch instead of backtrack i get a disk check error.
This is the first part of the error, I can't exactly copy and paste it as its on my laptop.

  • Disk Copy Utility to Write HFS disk images to USB floppy & ZIP drives?

Is there a disk copy utility that allows one to copy an HFS disk image directly to an attached USB drive, bypassing the Finder? I have both 100MB ZIP & 1.44MB floppy images which need to be restored to original media.

If you don't have a Mac that can read your OS X Installer DVD, then you have no way of putting it onto the USB drive.
Although there is PC software that will enable you to read from and write to Mac formatted drives on a PC, you cannot boot a PC from a Mac installer disc. The only possible solution would be the use of third-party PC software that can read an OS X Installer DVD restore its content to an OS X formatted USB drive. Unfortunately I have no idea if there is such an animal.
Maybe you should just order an external optical drive or a replacement drive for the defective one. You might check out macsales.com. Surely UPS delivers to the "middle of nowhere."

  • Use previous "Delete from hard disk" checked state?

Is there any way for the program to use the previous "Also delete selected item(s) from the hard disk" checked state in the file deletion confirmation dialog?  It gets tedious to check it every time I want to delete a file and if I forget to do it I will have an extra file sitting on my hard disk not in my catalog.

A quick shortcut that I use is to hit the spacebar (checks/unchecks the "delete from
hard disk" option), then hit the enter key to complete the process.

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after disk check 3.13.8-1 upgrade

EDIT: fixed adding nomodeset to /etc/default/grub
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nomodeset"
When upgrading to anything > 3.13.8 the screen works normally untill the disk check message then the screen flickers with the disk check message at the top for a few seconds then goes blank. I can then blind restart the system. Downgrading to 3.13.8-1 and problem goes away.

  • Windows 7 disk check

I've installed Arch with GRUB on the MBR twice now, and each time Windows 7 wants to do a disk check EVERY TIME it starts.
Wouldn't be so bad, but for some reason, the system stops responding and seems to freeze if it starts.  So usually I'd just cancel... but now I can't even do that!  It freezes if I try to skip.
This has occurred on an RC and now my RTM versions of Win7.  That's two installations of Arch, Win7, AND GRUB.
    Here is its GRUB entry
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
I know it proabably isn't Arch's fault but this is something I have not experienced with other distos, and as of now I can't even get back into Windows.

This is actually a problem with windows 7... I read up online that with 7 if it does a chkdsk on a secondary drive it will consume ALL available memory and lock up.. apparantly it also does it with secondary partitions on the same drive. Canceling it also causes it to lock up. You may need to disable chkdsk upon boot up (dunno how youd do that) so it wont do it.. ever.

  • Hang on startup due to Ultrabay disk check

I've had trouble ejecting the superbay hard drive.  It's less useful if it's not hot-swappable, but I can live with powering off and switching between it and the dvd.  A program installer I have on the hd stopped working, so I figured I'd do a disk check, which Vista scheduled to do on startup.
Now, when the ultrabay hd is in and the T400 starts up, I get the lovely blank black screen.  Since the hard drive is active most of the time, I let it go for an hour or so, at which point the hd activity stops and the only indicator lights on are wi-fi, the 'Z' in a circle and the plug power icon.
If the ultrabay drive is not in during startup, Vista boots normally, so I'm guessing it has to do with the scheduled disk check.  If so, how can I turn it off?  If it's not the disk check, what could it be?  And what's a good alternate program for checking disks & defragmenting?
    Thanks!

Click the "start" button, type msconfig and press "enter". Click the "Startup" tab and find the entry that has "chkdsk" in it, uncheck it. Restart your Thinkpad. After restarting you will receive a message in the lower right corner aout some startup programs being blocked. You will need to click the icon that has the ballon with that message and have it show you the blocked program, one of them will be msconfig, allow it to run. When msconfig runs check the box that says "Do not notify me" and click next.

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • Disk Repair Utility Full Disk Error

Today, my MBP froze, as in it no longer responded to keypresses or moving the mouse, so I held the power button until it powered off. Whenever I try to power it back on, it comes up with the apple logo on a gray screen, and a progress bar briefly appears beneath the apple logo, flashes a few times and dissappears, then the computer turns off.
By running the disk repair utility from the OSX install disk, the OSX partition of my hard drive needs to be repaired. When I try to repair it, it gives me an error saying that the disk is too full to do a repair on (I probably have ~10GB free, so this makes sense), and I need to wipe my disk and reinstall OSX .
I have windows installed via bootcamp and I can still boot into that and see my contents of the OSX partition (e.g. I can play my music, watch movies, open documents all of which are on the OSX partition, I just can't boot to it.).
Although probably unrelated, I've run the diagnostics, and everything came up okay. I've also tried holding shift during boot (trying to get OSX into safe mode) and holding command-option-P-R (clear the PRAM) during boot, neither of which helped.
My current strategy is copy a lot of data off my OSX partition from within my windows partition to an external HDD, in order to free up space on my OSX drive, so that hopefully disk repair can do its job. Does anyone know if this will work, or if not, can anyone recommend an alternate work around?

Backup your files, if possible.  Your only recourse is to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.  Do not copy or backup files from Windows.  If at all possible boot from another drive like your external HDD by installing OS X on the external drive (unless it is already a bootable drive.)  You can then copy your data from the faulty OS X volume before erasing it.
You should never permit your free space to drop so low.  One should maintain 10-12 GBs or 10-15% of the volume's total capacity, whichever is greater.
Since this problem will likely recur I suggest you consider just replacing the drive with one that is considerably larger.  I would also be sure to arrange to maintain a bootable backup on an external drive in case problems such as this one occur.

  • Time Machine External Hard Drive Disk Check/Repair

    Howdy
I have a 24" iMac using Time Machine for a backup. The external drive that Time Machine writes to is a 500 GB FW400 hard drive. I am occasionally getting an error message stating that Time Machine was unable to complete a back up to a write error.
Could someone please explain to me in some detail how to run a disk check on this external drive to look for any hardware errors? Also, if necessary how would I perform a disk repair on this external drive?
Then one more question. Is there a way to delete just the Oldest roughly 50% of the backup files that
Time machine has stored on the external drive, so as to clear up disk space by removing files that I no longer would have use for?
    Thank you!
    DaveW

You need to locate the files you wish to delete then use the tool drop down menu to delete them.
A TM backup is a specific hierarchy of files arranged on the backup drive. You cannot simply comb through the backup archive and selectively delete data from the backup. Doing so would only result ultimately in a messed up backup or having the files replaced during TM's next backup since you did not delete the same files from you hard drive.
If your backup drive is having write error problems, deleting files from the backup drive isn't going to solve them. Repairing the hard drive may fix the problem depending on the cause. Since you did not post any console messages from the TM backup that reported the error, there's no way to determine the possible cause other than a disk error. Repairing the drive should be your first effort. Examining the console log entries may provide additional information if repairing the drive isn't able to fix the problem.
As you should know TM will automatically expunge old files if it requires additional space for a backup. See the following:
About TM "Backup Drive is Full" Alert
TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Data are deleted to make space for a new backup, but if TM is unable to delete enough files to free up space for the new backup, then you will get a disk full error. Normal thinning during a backup occurs during TM's periodic weekly and monthly consolidation backups. Note, that on a TC the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from your view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.
It's quite easy to run out of backup space. A TM backup drive should be at least twice the capacity of the drive(s) backed up.
