Disk Clean up

I'm runnign on Vista, and 3 days ago Ihave 83.4 GB Free space in my hard disk, and just an hour ago, I checked and it read 74 GB free in those three days I did not download any program or saved any file, and in a matter of 3 days i lost 9 Gb, so I defragmented my disk and run the disk clean up, deleted the shadowstorage in the disk clean up more options tab, and after that my free space read only 78.8 Gb and is again loosing more free space by the minute. So where could my disk space gone to? How can I regain the lost free space I had? Is there a burglar?

I don't know what else to tell you. Did you learn anything from these tips?
How to locate and correct disk space problems on NTFS volumes in Windows XP
As you probably know, Vista Business creates shadow copies of files between restore points.
Previous versions of files: frequently asked questions
In case you don't have a good reference to the shadow-storage commands, go to Vssadmin.
Here's a thought (but it might take half-a-day). Do a search for all files ( *.*) in non-indexed locations including hidden and sort it by date created. You might learn something by viewing recent files.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • Windows 8.1 can not access apps after using Disk Clean-up

All was working well until I did a Disk Clean-up, now no apps from the Metro Start screen will load I just get a transparent icon holder on the Taskbar. I have tried uninstall the app which was Calendar I was allowed to uninstall but when I tried to re-install
I just get error 0x80070005, after check lots of forums and Microsoft technet articles and all seem to point Windows Store being damaged or corrupted, I have run all the fixes but note work, when I run AppsDiagnostic.diagcab I just get [Service Registration
is missing or corrupt] [Windows Store cache may be damaged] [Windows Store configuration may be damaged] I have now run out of what to try next. Can anyone help before I lose all my hair.

    Hi Rick,
First of all, please run  "dism/online/cleanup-image/restorehealth"to check the health of the system files. Then take the following steps to have a check.
    1. We can run  “wsreset.exe” to reset the cache of Windows Store as S.Sengupta suggested to have a check .
    2. If the issue persists ,try this way to re-register the Windows Store to recover the entry of Windows Store :
Right click on the “Start screen” , choose “Command prompt(Admin)”and in-put :
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.XML
    3. If the issue persists ,kill Store and Store Broker from task manager . Rename the Cache folder to CacheOld at. C:\Users/(Your User Account)\AppData\Local\Packages\WinStore_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\LocaalState.
Rename folder called Cache into CacheOld, Create an empty folder with name Cache. That’s all. If you want to revert changes just delete Cache and Rename  CacheOld into Cache.
" 0x80070005" means access denied .Considering the store app is downloaded from the windows update .Please refer to the following link to gain the permissios of the registry keys to have a check.

  • Disk full and auto disk clean up is not working

Hi there. My new look black bt vision box states the disk is full and has marked recordings for auto disk clean up. The problem is that auto clean up is not actually deleting anything therefore any recordings set are failing because the disk is full.
Can someone please tell me what needs done to make auto disk cleanup work please?
    Middleware ver is 4.65.4 rev.1 512 build 243196 Jan 11 2013. App ver and conf ver is 2.39.12 1301151330.
    Many thanks in advance.

Thanks DS. I did as you suggested but made no difference. Today I deleted hundreds of recording and Lo! I now have loads of free space. But, between doing as you suggested and today, lots of recordings tried and failed, reporting insufficient disk space. Fair enough, except auto clean up is meant to prevent that. So, is there a possibility that setting is disabled? Thanks again.
Doh, I was hoping this would of worked for you
Now that's one I can't answer as I've only ever had my 500GB HDD 4/5th's full a few times.
Hopefully someone with a full HDD can step in and add a comment?

In the future, you need to get smarter about how you store your serial numbers; they must be backed up onto a different disk, just like your photos; or you may use some other storage method like paper and pencil. Just like photos, you need at least 2 copies in different locations.

  • Computer running real slow. Tried Vista disk cleaning but attempts to fix error not working. How can I speed up PC?

My computer is running really really slow. I did a Microsoft help search and I see performance recommendations to do a disk cleanup and disk defrag. Neither works on my computer.
Maybe I'm not on the right track. I went to support.microsoft.com and followed several instructions to go to cmd and type in some words.
This is the message I get when I try to run disk clean:

After I select ok, I get this message:

I followed the instruction at support.microsoft.com  form for why do I receive an advance INF error. That did not work
Mon 4/8/14 at 1:46 pm I did this: vista-performance inf install failure  (it didn't take me anywhere) so I tried this:

  • App/Icon problem since Disk clean

Today I did a hard drive clean, to free up some space. (using the Disk Doctor app)
I now find that a couple of icons in my dock are showing a question mark (?) rather than the icon.
    For example : MPlayerX
And these apps affected with the '?' won't open.
So I did a fresh install of MPlayerX from the Apple App Store.  It downloads and installs fine into Launchpad. But the app simply won't open (I just see a rotating multi-colour disk).  I have to force the app to quit.
I have uninstalled and fresh-installed twice, no go.
I have not run any other app/disk clean or uninstall procedures. Just the Disk Doctor. In the Disk Doctor parameters, I set it to clean 'App Caches, 'App Logs', 'Downloads' & 'Trashcan'.
    Any suggestions?

Cleaning applications can destroy your operating system, which apparently Disk Doctor did.
Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

I have learned that a Clean Up is a good thing to do after a firmware update and on occasion after I have done a lot of track deleting and transferring. I would not call that routine but it will certainly not hurt.

  • What is a good disk cleaner

I am looking for a popular disk cleaner and willing to spend 100 .... what about disk tools pro???

I agree wiith others, spend your money on an external drive for backup.
Ideally, you should have an identical clone of your internal drive on an external drive, and also run Time Machine for incremental changes between updates of your clone.
The only disk utility I would consider spending my money on is DiskWarrior.

  • How do I remove the Hard disk from computer? I have an old iMac, model M5521 circa 2000.  I need to wipe the disk clean to DOD specs before donating it.

I have an iMac Model M5521, circa 2000, which I must wipe the hard drive clean to DOD specs before donating it.
I have the DOD software on another non-apple computer.  I need to remove the hard disk drive from the iMac to do this.
How do I get to the hard drive?  I find only two screws on the back of the monitor/case and they do not help.  What am I missing?
    Thanks

It's not too hard but you have to take off the bottom cover of the case. These instructions shoudl show what yo uneed to do.

I pulled the original 10G hard drive from our M5521 and replaced it with a larger one. The whole thing took under 45 minutes, including the 15 minutes it took me to recover a screw that fell into the works.

  • Do macbook pro users have to do a disk clean up or defrag?

Do we need to use system tools like a PC would- if so what???

    chrismet wrote:

No, 99% of most users don't need to do anything to maintain a Mac.
However some do, if the Mac has a hard drive and it's slow, some steps can be taken to speed it up.
How to properly defrag a Mac's hard drive
If you want to clean the Mac of hidden stuff, like caches etc. then CCleaner for Mac and OnyX for OS X will do the trick, followed by a Security Erase (Zero) of Free Space using Disk Utility. (if a hard drive)
How do I securely delete data from the machine?

  • Can OS 10.1 disk clean G3 running 10.2

    Hi,
I'm giving away my old G3 minitower which is running 10.2. I would like to clear the hard drive first and leave 10.2 in place. I've lost my 10.2 disks but have the old 10.1 disks. Can the disk utility from the 10.1 CD clean everything leaving 10.2 in place?

Hi, James. If you're going to give the computer away, you'll want to zero the hard drive completely, leaving nothing at all on it that could contain any personal information. If you give it away with OS X 10.2 installed and no 10.2 installer CDs, you'll be pirating that OS, and the recipient of the computer will have no legal right to use it, no way to reinstall it if s/he ever wants to do so, and no way to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting. In short, don't do that.
Instead, use the 10.1 installer to erase the hard drive, using the "zero all data" option. Then give the computer away with the 10.1 installer discs. That will give the recipient the choice of what OS version to install and where to obtain a legal copy of it, if they want something other than 10.1. It will keep your hands clean and your data 100% safe, neither of which will be the case if you give the computer away with 10.2 still installed.
