Disk Cleanup

Hi. I know theres an extremely hard chance to get a virus on a Mac but is there anything on a Mac for disk cleanups or wiping out "cache"/ temporary internet files for spyware? I am a new mac user so please help. thanks for your time

Safari can emtpy it's own cache simply by selecting "Emtpy Cache…" from the File menu. Otherwise you can use a tool like TinkerTool…
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11967
… to set Safari to not retain any cache nor history.

  • Disk Cleanup in Windows 8.1 running by itself

    Hi,
I'm having a strange problem. If I let my PC idle for around 5 minutes, the disk cleanup utility pops up and analyzes my PC, then
leaves the window open showing what could be cleaned up, etc. However, if I move the mouse, the window vanishes.
I'm running Win 8.1, and I have two hard drives, a 250GB SSD and a 1.5TB HD. I just installed the 1.5TB drive today, so that might
have something to do with it, but to be honest, I don't recall if this problem started before or after I installed the 1.5GB drive.
This is happening every 5 minutes or so - makes it hard to enjoy a movie or anything that would leave the computer idle. I Googled
a lot and couldn't find anything. I've run disk cleanup by hand and let it do its thing for both drives, but it didn't help.
Any ideas? It's getting annoying. I can't even drag it off to the side of the screen because it vanishes the moment I move the mouse.
If I can't figure it out, I guess I can unplug the 1.5TB and see if that fixes it. Then I will at least know the culprit.

Thanks for the ideas. I did check the startup tab in the Task Manager, but it only had things I expected to be there. Nothing strange that would cause disk cleanup to start.
However, Roger Lu is on the same track I am on. It is related to a task in the Task Scheduler. There are four items in particular that seem to be linked to each other:
    Idle Maintenance
    Manual Maintenance
    Regular Maintenance
    Maintenance Configurator
I'm fairly sure it is Regular Maintenance that is causing the issue. I went in and told it to not stop the process if my system was idle, after that disk cleanup stopped disappearing when I moved my mouse or had any other kind of input.
I am still tinkering with the others, setting them to not stop the maintenance as well to double check and make sure that they aren't compounding the problem.
I just wish there was a list of what Regular Maintenance does, and a way to change it, as with the other maintenance tasks too. I feel as though these shouldn't be disabled because Windows set them in the first place.
Could you talk a look in your Task Scheduler, then double click on Maintenance Configurator  and tell me if you have the same four items as I do? Are any of them listed as running? Are they disabled or ready?
I'm just about ready to disable the one that is causing problems, and re-enable it once a month or so to let it do whatever it is it does.

  • Windows Update Cleanup option is missing when running Disk Cleanup

I am running a domain controller on Window Server 2008 R2 and I am running low on C drive space. I have installed KB2852386 and I have Cleanmgr.exe and Cleanmgr.exe.mui in the system32 and system32\EN-us folders respectively. But when I log in as administrator
and run Disk Cleanup on the C drive, I do not get an option for Windows Update Cleanup. My winsxs folder is 16Gb and I would dearly like to recover some of that space.

Didn't think it would have been a WSUS server but just thought I'd check as that always complicates things...
I do need to clarify though, which version of Windows Server are you running? Your original post says 2008 R2, but your reply suggests it's just 2008 (mainly because 2008 R2 only has SP1).
If that's the case, you'll need to use the Compcln.exe tool. This removes archived files that are used in case you ever wanted to roll back an update, or even an entire service pack. Once the archived files are removed you can no longer remove SP2.
To use the tool, simply run compcln at a command prompt.
I honestly can't say how much space it will save. There are pages of discussions out there regarding WinSxS and why it takes up so much space. If you're still struggling after this you may have to look to hardware options...
I'll leave you with one last link to check out - just a blog explaining a bit more about WinSxS if you are interested.
What is the WINSXS directory in Windows 2008 and Windows Vista and why is it so large?
    Best of luck

Why do we need to need Desktop Experience to get Disk Cleanup? What other options do we have?

Disk Cleanup cannot be installed separately. This is part of desktop experience.

  • Disk Cleanup (Windows Update Cleanup) removes Windows updates

Disk Cleanup (Windows Update Cleanup) removes Windows updates KB3031432,KB3021952, and KB3004375. I have never had this problem before. I use Disk Cleanup after every monthly Microsoft updates. I had to reinstall listed updates on two computers when I checked
for new Windows updates. Why is this? Windows Update Cleanup section of Disk Cleanup should not remove updates. Can not completely cleanup my computers. Rodney

Cleanup does not removed any updates. Can you check windowsupdate.log file?

  • Running Disk Cleanup: Windows 8

Sometimes in troubleshooting it is a good idea to run the Disk Cleanup feature built into the Windows OS.  This is one of the advised steps to perform if one receives a Fatal Error when installing printers and is good to know how to do.
The Printer Support from HP page has many great videos with step by step explanations of many printing related troubleshooting methods.  The page also has videos with great information about how to use certain functions of printers as well.  To access the Printer Support from HP youtube page click here.  It is also advised to Subscribe to the youtube page to ensure you are up-to-date on all of the current videos as they are released!

  • Windows Disk Cleanup Temporary Internet Files for FireFox?

Hi guys. When I run Windows Disk Cleanup there is an option to delete 234MB of Temporary Internet Files. I don't use IE so are these FireFox temp files?

Plugins from MS like Windows Media Player and Silverlight use the IE Temporary Internet Files and Cookies folder, so you may be seeing files from those plugins. You can check those folder to see which files are in there to verify this.

  • Running the Disk Cleanup Utility in Windows 8

Sometimes, inbetween uninstalling and reinstalling software/drivers, it is a good idea to run Windows Disk Cleanup Utility. The Disk Cleanup utility helps free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files from your computer.

  • [Moved] Disk cleanup G580

I bought a Lenovo G580 in HK last Aug.
The Sales Rep. set up the ‘Administrator password’ and ’user password’ to me. Unfortunately, the ‘Adm. password’ doesn’t work thus I can’t process ‘disk cleanup’.
Would someone advice how to do?
Shall recover the notebook to initial state and reload all programs?
    Please advice.

    hi loveland,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
If we are talking about the Windows Log in Password,
I would suggest that you proceed with Factory Reset,
You can press this button(2) to turn on the system and access that option
Just follow the Recovery Prompt and you'll be good to go.
    Hope this helps,
    Cheers!

  • Is there a way to cleanup your imac like doing a disk cleanup on a pc

My iMac has been a little slow lately and I've even had software that won't respond. With my PC I would do a Disk Cleanup. Is there something similar that I should be doing with my Mac?

can you help thank you :-)
    You're welcome
Yes,as good as Malwarebytes is,more scanning needs to be done.
    Please go here http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/
run a scan, checkmark all appropriate boxes, including 'check archives,
click on advanced settings and checkmark ''scan for pottentialy unsafe apps'
disable your antivirus just before you run Start
and re-enable it afterwards. The scanner will give you the option to delete anything it finds at the end.
Please do that.and if it does find malware, please go straight to the malware forum.
İf no malware is found, please come back here.

  • Disk Cleanup CPU issue - Windows Module Installer Worker

I have a brand new VM running on ESX 5.5 U2, OS is Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition, i have installed Desktop Experience.
The OS is up to date. Whenever i do a Disk Cleanup, the CPU is at 100% usage in Task Manager, the Windows Module Installer Worker process is taking all the CPU resources. It only happens when i run the Disk Cleanup wizard.

    This one may help.

  • Disk Cleanup won't run (doesn't start)

ultimately i'm trying to cleanup the Windows Installer and SxS folders, but i can't seem to get the cleanup utility to start.
    Configuration:
    Panasonic ToughPad G1
    Windows 7 x86 (latest updates)
i have 3 of these toughpads and the disk cleanup only works on 1 of them. the other two, i've tried running it from the disk properties panel (on the general tab), i've tried searching "disk cleanup" and running it as admin, and then i just browsed
to the cleanmgr.exe in sys32 and ran that as admin.  in every case, i get a half-second of hourglass and then nothing.
on the computer that does work, i can just hit the button in disk properties (as a normal local user) and it starts scanning the disk.
i have no idea what i'm missing.  any thoughts??

    Hi,
Have you tried the suggestion mentioned by
    Balamurugan? Any result?
    Meanwhile, according to this blog
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askpfeplat/archive/2013/10/08/breaking-news-reduce-the-size-of-the-winsxs-directory-and-free-up-disk-space-with-a-new-update-for-windows-7-sp1-clients.aspx
disk cleanup plugins for Disk Cleanup are listed under the registry entry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches
I suggest you check whether there're some corruptions or permission issue for the registry entry in the problematic pcs, you can compare it with another one (which is functioning fine).
or some third party tool you installed conflict with the built-in disk cleanup tool.

  • Disk cleanup suggestions?!?!?

I need suggestions for a disk cleanup. I dont do a crazy ammount of Photo editing or music but my disk is almost full. I need suggestions that will clean up the disk and address any security issues. Something that has a gurantee to not damage anything and preferably not too expensive. Thanks!

    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.  An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys. In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box. Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular FREE storage sites.
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.  Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is *free*!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff.”  You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
Applications>Font Book Select “All Fonts” If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.  To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts; Edit>Resolve>Duplicates. What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them. More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29757FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s). HD>Library>Printers Folder If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all. HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue. You can do this with a FREE utility called http://monolingual.sourceforge.netMonolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly. However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*.  Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).
