Disk connected to Airport extreme is always waking from sleep

I have a 360 GB iomega minimax disk connected to the AE USB port to serve as Time machine companion. Both my Leopard iMac and my windows vista laptop are usually connected to the AE(n) through wireless-n. After some 5-minutes of inactivity, I assume the iomega disk goes asleep since it stops spinning. THis was I expected to occur at al times. However, i found the iomega to be furiously spinning at times when both computers are off! Is there anything that can explain this behavior? Note that even when both computers are off, the AE is always quite hot, so it seems there is activity in this box. This activity (I dont know which) may be responsible for the activity of the iomega disk. Am I correct? In case I am, which type of activity could it be?

You can't technically. iPads cannot directly read HDDs like a computer can.
You will need an app liie FileBrowser to do this. Of course all file operations will be done through the App itself.

  • Airport Extreme disappears after waking from sleep.

Here is a strange one for the experts out there...
I recently purchased an Airport Extreme card for my G4 Powermac (FW800). It is the Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8). It installs easy, and it works great. I can connect to my Airport Express with no problem, and to my 2009 MacBook.
The problem occurs after the computer goes to sleep. After I wake it (even if it's only after a minute), the Airport Icon disappears and the Spinning Beach Ball of Death appears over the title bar, and the dock. I can click on windows and move them, but not use them.
If I use the Special Menu and tell the computer to sleep I don't have any problems. I'm using the latest update for Leopard, but this happened with Tiger, too.
    Any thoughts?

I had this problem just recently and seem to have fixed it today. I made the following changes:
I changed security from WPA2 to WPA using the Airport Admin Utility.
I went to the Network Preferences panel and found that the network was still listed as WPA2, so I deleted it.
I then added the WPA network to my preferred network list.
The computer now reconnects automatically after sleep or shutdown.
I don't know whether changing from WPA2 to WPA was necessary. It may be that all you need to do is delete and re-add the network.
    Hope that helps!

  • Not able to see disk connected to AirPort Extreme 802.11n

I just installed my AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wireless Base station. Wireless internet works like a charm, however, I cannot see my external hard disk when it is connected to the base station (amber light blinking and when checking the problem, I am told that "Disk needs repair"). When connecting the hard disk directly to the PC, I have no problem seeing the data. Any tips or tricks out there... ?
    AirPort Extreme 802.11n   Windows XP

I finally got my 500 GB Western Digital MyBook USB drive to work by reformatting it to HFS+ format.
Of course, before I could do that, I had to copy all my files onto another hard drive. That job took a day to accomplish.
I work with Poser, and have a lot of content installed... We're talking thousands of files.
Once the drive was reformatted to HFS+ format, I copied everything back over. That took another day. Then I connected to the AEBS.
The USB drive was immediately recognized. It was incredibly easy to access the USB drive on my PCs. It required no effort on my part, except to supply the password.
In the end, I've decided this effort is a failure.
The drive is way too slow for my needs. Also, one of my vital Poser utilities (CorrectReference Pro) will not work properly with the USB drive on the AEBS.
I am currently in the process of copying all those files over to two external USB hard drives attached to my other PC.
Then I plan to unmount my 500 GB MyBook drive, and reformat it back to NTFS. I'll let the Notebook PC have it on a direct connection again.
I have a couple "junk" External Hard drives that are 160 GB. Maybe I'll use one of those as an Airport disk...
But I won't be using the Airport disk for anything important. It's too slow.

  • Using time machine backup on disk connected to airport extreme router?

So I've read a number of articles about using an external hard drive connected to the airport extreme base station as a time machine backup. The thing is that I'm writing this in august 09, most of the articles (which say the feature is officially unsupported) date about a year and a half ago. I'm wondering if there have been any developments since then.

I also have this problem -- it started about 2 weeks ago (around July 20?), possibly at the time the new Airport Extreme firmware went into effect. I have two separate Mac laptops that each use Time Machine to back up to different disks that are attached to the Airport Extreme (i.e., each laptop has its own backup-destination disk). Both were working flawlessly before (for more than 6 months); now, each one reliably drops the connection to the disk (produces an error message, and thereafter cannot re-connect to the destination disk until I cycle the Airport Extreme with power-off/on). I had hoped that 10.5.8 would help (the release notes talked about improved stability with Airport connections), but not so.

  • Setting up USB disks connected to Airport Extreme

I took two different USB drives, formatted one drive with two partitions of Mac OS Extended (journaled) and the other drive formatted NTFS. After attaching the drives to the AE, I established how I wanted to share the devices and set up accounts to access the devices. My intention was to use these drives to backup my devices but have since learned that Time Machine does not support this (stupid and disappointing).
When I log in from my Mac, I see the one drive with two partitions, but I also see a drive with my account name. Performing a "Get Info" on the drives now show their format as AppleShare. What feature did I invoke that automatically established a "third" drive? Where is it established on the physically formatted Mac drive? Does the format of Appleshare just indicate how the partition is accessed?
The other account, established for a Windows machine, does not see the NTFS drive, but when logging in to the AE also has a drive mapped with the name of the account. I also cannot consistently connect to this drive as the airport utility does not display the drive in the system tray. The airport utility doesn't see the AE, yet this Windows device can print just fine to the printers attached to the AE.
I'm dazed and confused. Can anyone explain what is going on? Thanks.

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme will support drive formats of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and FAT32. NTFS is not supported, so that might explain some of your difficulties.
What feature did I invoke that automatically established a "third" drive? Where is it established on the physically formatted Mac drive? Does the format of Appleshare just indicate how the partition is accessed?
Not sure about this. When I format a drive as Mac OS or FAT 32, I see a single drive when accessed from the Finder.

  • How do I restrict access to USB Disk connected to Airport Extreme

I have attached a USB HDD to my Airport Extreme Base Station. The drive is divided into 4 partitions, which I did with the HDD connected directly to a MBP before plugging into the AEBS. All the Macs on the network seem to be able to read and write into all 4 partitions. Is there anyway to restrict which Macs can access with partition? Or, if I went to a single partition, is there a way to restrict access on a folder by folder basis?
I've tried searching, but the best answer I've found so far is that the AEBS will only support a single partition/volume.... which doesn't appear to be true anymore.
    Thanks in advance

You can put a filter on your wifi or use something like the K9 browser.

  • Can't connect to any wireless network after waking from sleep

I have a Netgear wgr814 wireless router and a Powerbook 12" 867mhz. A few months ago, every once in a while when the PB awoke from sleep, it would not be able to connect to any wireless networks. My network showed in the airport menu, but the computer would not connect to it. I believe that the network settings show a self assigned IP of 169.x.x.x. Usually I can see 4 networks in the airport menu, but when it gets in this state only mine shows. Nothing I did on the computer side could make the computer reconnect: renew dhcp, restart, reseat airport card, etc.
After trial and error I found that if I restarted my router, the pb would reconnect and all would be well. The problem occurred about once a week for a while. Since resetting the router fixed the problem I thought that it may be my router so I updated the firmware. After doing so, the problem didn't occur for about a month, but now it happens at least once per day. Resetting the router always fixes the problem. I don't have to do anything to the PB. Once the router comes back up the PB obtains its IP and is happy again.
I'll mention that a Dell Laptop on the same network never has any issues and when the PB loses connection the Dell is always fine.
What could be doing this? My PB is over 3 years old, so is the airport card starting to die? That's the only thing I can think of.

    hi there
alright.... I tried a bunch of things and I'm not exctly sure what I did that did the trick, but I got the problem solved. I turned off the WPA encryption on the AP. Then I turned it back on with a different password.
I wonder if the first password I had was too short and that was some how causing confusion.

  • Airport not Reconnecting after waking from sleep

    Hi all,
I have a problem with Airport not automatically reconnecting after the computer wakes from sleep or is turned on or rebooted. I have it set to join a specific network automatically. Any idea why this may be? It used to work just fine.

I had this problem just recently and seem to have fixed it today. I made the following changes:
I changed security from WPA2 to WPA using the Airport Admin Utility.
I went to the Network Preferences panel and found that the network was still listed as WPA2, so I deleted it.

  • Macbook Pro not always waking from sleep

The only time I sleep my Macbook Pro is when I close the cover. Before I open it, I make sure that the light on the front is pulsating, indicating it is fully asleep.
Sometimes when I open it is is waking up fine, and other times the screen just stays black and the light on the front remains pulsating. When the screen is black, pressing the power button or shutting the screen and opening it again has no effect - the only thing I can do is hold down the power button for 10 seconds and restart my computer.
This only recently started happening. I'm running 10.5.4, but it started happening with 10.5.3, although I don't think it's system related because it didn't start right after I upgraded to 10.5.3 but some time after, only about 2 weeks ago from today.
Any help on this matter would be appreciated!

if you do a search, you will find other threads related to the sleep issue, and might find some insight there . . .
it is strange, i was having the problem too, where the sleep problem would happen intermittently. after i realized there was a problem i stopped putting my mbp to sleep. but recently i have started to use the sleep mode for my mbp, and have not had this problem again.
have you consulted with apple on your issue?

  • Network connection slow to become active after waking from sleep.

Using MBP (2007) with OS 10.8.2  I put my machine to sleep each night after work.  Each morning when I wake it, the network connection takes over 90 seconds to become active. This is on a WIRED network.  Didn't have this problem before Mountain Lion upgrade. Before ML the connection was nearly instant. Any clues?

I am seeing the same issue. I believe it started after upgrading to 10.8.2. (I did not notice such long network reconnections after wake with either 10.8.0 or 10.8.1.) I am also on a wired network. Same result using DHCP and fixed IP.
The network reconnection after wake used to be nearly instantaneous.

  • External Hard disk unresponsive after waking from sleep

i have an external usb2 drive connected to my 15" mbp. when waking from sleep, the drive is shown as mounted by accessing it gives me the spinning beachball icon and the computer stops responding until i pull out the usb cable from the mbp. it then proceeds to give me a device removal error. the external drive draws power from the usb bus.
other than this one issue the hard drive works perfectly on both ports.

I got home from work today and was forced to hard restart AGAIN. It seems to be happening more and more often now, but maybe that is just me.
My logitech revolution mouse has never caused problems before with a g4 powerbook or g5 tower. The last thing I added was the apple wireless keyboard. I can't imagine it being the problem since it is using an apple product with an apple computer.

  • SyncMaster Profile is lost after waking from sleep

I recently updated my Mac OS to Mt Lion (from Snow Leopard).  The SyncMaster is attached as a 2nd monitor and was working just fine for years under Snow Leopard.
Now, under Mt Lion, while the SyncMaster does come up initially with the correct settings (1680x1050 - 60Hz) on a fresh boot — after the computer sleeps and wakes up it often (but not always) comes back with only a Generic VGA profile in the Display Preferences and the resolution is set to a less-than-useful resolution (1400x1050 - i.e., stretched too wide).
How can I get Mt Lion to retain its connection to the SyncMaster Profile when waking from sleep?
For reference, here is the Preferences after a (re)boot — note that it recognizes "SyncMaster" in the titlebar:
And this the the resolution, which is the correct setting:
Then, waking from sleep, it's now set to this — note the generic (VGA) rather than the SyncMaster in the titlebar:
And this is the resolution that it thinks is "best" — and there is no option to specify the desired 1680 x 1050 @ 60 Hz:

Yes, I've just noticed that!  I've been trying device sleep for the last couple of days and had noticed that (so far) this method does not tend to lose the resolution settings when awakening.  (I hadn't tested it enough to see if this works 100%.)
Another thing I've tried is to 'wake up' the screen (from screen sleep) using one of the computer's keyboard keys rather than clicking the (wireless) mouse or tapping the external keyboard key.  When the screen wakes up from a mouse-click, it shows the normal display, then quickly flashes a solid/blank screen, and then comes back with the bad resolution setting -- like it was going out to search for the profile rather than simply waking up with the profile it last had.  The odd thing about that is that if I leave the computer setup with the 'bad' setting on the 2nd monitor, let it go into display-sleep again, and then wake it up, it typically goes back to the correct settings ... like its toggling between profiles.

  • Mini Airport very slow following wake from sleep

My son's mini, on a 20Mbit down/5Mbit up connection, has a network problem when waking from sleep. Once awake, it only manages 1Mbit down/2Mbit up. Using my Macbook Pro, I verified that there wasn't a network problem. Shutting down and powering up the mini reverses the (repeatable) problem. The MBP does not exhibit the same behavior.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Jim

Mine does the same from time to time - I have found that if you just put it back to sleep, and then wake it, the connection then works fine.
Irritating but fixable, at least for me.

  • How to access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

How can I access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

...Called it a roaming network.  Wireless mode is create a wireless network. I have checked allow this network to be extended.  Probably need to uncheck that?
Yes, that option should be deselected as it only pertains to when both routers are interconnected by wireless. Since you have a roaming network, they of course, would be interconnected by Ethernet.
The other important settings for a roaming network are:
Each router must have a unique station name. For the AirPort, this would be called its Base Station Name. I believe the default station name for Linksys routers is: linksys
Each router must broadcast a wireless network with an identical Network Name. For the Linksys, Network Name is the same as its SSID.
Each router wireless network must use the same Wireless Security type and password. The Linksys WRT-54G is capable of up to WPA2 Personal. If you have it set to this level of security, the AirPort should be at the same setting.
Make sure that each router is not on the same Radio Channel for the 2.4 GHz radio. In the US, there are basically only three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6, or 11. Set each so that they don't use the same channel but use of those three choices.
