Disk Copy Utility missing

I understand that there is a Disk Copy Utility in the Utilities Applications in Mac OS X Jaguar V10.2. But I have the Mac OS X 10.4.8 (Tigier) and I cant find this utility. How can I access it ?

Disk copying is handled through Disk Utility. There is no separate utility in Tiger.

  • Disk Copy Utility to Write HFS disk images to USB floppy & ZIP drives?

Is there a disk copy utility that allows one to copy an HFS disk image directly to an attached USB drive, bypassing the Finder? I have both 100MB ZIP & 1.44MB floppy images which need to be restored to original media.

If you don't have a Mac that can read your OS X Installer DVD, then you have no way of putting it onto the USB drive.
Although there is PC software that will enable you to read from and write to Mac formatted drives on a PC, you cannot boot a PC from a Mac installer disc. The only possible solution would be the use of third-party PC software that can read an OS X Installer DVD restore its content to an OS X formatted USB drive. Unfortunately I have no idea if there is such an animal.
Maybe you should just order an external optical drive or a replacement drive for the defective one. You might check out macsales.com. Surely UPS delivers to the "middle of nowhere."

  • Disk Copy utility - error 22

    Hi there,
I have problems with Disk Copy 10.2.4 when trying to burn an image to a blank cd-r. It says "wasn't able to bur image. error 22, invalid argument." Does anyone knows what this error means and how to solve this issue? I really need to burn this image.
    Thanks in advance
    JP

First thing is that you should not use Disk Copy at all; it is unstable under 10.3. Use Disk Utility instead. That said, try this:
    1. Open Disk Utility
    2. Select Verify from the Images menu and choose the image you want to burn.
    3. Let that process run; it should give you the checksum on the image. If it reports an invalid checksum then the image is corrupt and you'll have to start over with a new image.
    4. If the checksum is okay, the Image will appear in the sidebar on the left. You need to select it, but don't mount it.
    5. In the lower right hand corner of the window the "Verify Disk" option will be enabled.
    6) Click that button. Disk Utility will verify whether or not the image is okay.
    7) If a problem is reported, you can try to fix it by clicking on Repair Disk.

  • How do you create a disk image using Disk Copy?

    Hello,
Is there any way you can create a disk image using Disc Copy? Is there a better way to create a Disk Image?
I would like to burn two copies of a 4.2 gig folder on my mac. I usually insert a blank DVD-R and then the mac asks if I would like to prepare it at which point I click "yes". An icon of a DVD disk appears on the desktop and then I drag my files onto this icon. It takes a few moments to create the disc image and then I click "burn". However, after the disc is burned the disc image disappears and I have to start all over again if I want to make another copy.
How can I save this disc image? If I could save the disc image, it would enable me to burn a second DVD right after the first without having to create the disk image all over again. This would save a lot if time.
    I am using OS 10.1.5
    Thank you for any suggestions

Thanks Niel for the info about creating a Disk Image with the Disk Copy utility in OS 10.1.5
That worked however when I insert a blank DVD-R, the disk image still has to be copied to the DVD-R buffer and then it can be burned. And so this doesn't really save any steps - the "copying into the buffer" step still has to occur whether or not you have created a disk image of your files. So creating a disk image doesn't really shorten the process of burning multiple copies of a DVD.
I will try to describe the steps more clearly:
Two of the three steps for creating a DVD (steps 2 and 3) are very time-consuming:
    1. put blank DVD into the drive (a DVD disk icon quickly appears)
    2. drag files onto this icon (this step takes a long time as the files are copied into the buffer)
    3. choose "burn" (the actual burning also takes a long time)
I was hoping that when I create two or more DVDs of the same files, I could first create a Disk image so that when I create the second DVD, step 2 could be skipped. That does not seem to be the case - the disk image still has to be re-loaded. And so I think I will not bother with the Disk image idea - it doesn't seem to be necessary or helpful when burning DVDs to backup data.
    Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Disk copy missing from utilities folder

Can't figure out what happened to disk copy. I've used it in the past to copy dvd's to my computer but all of sudden it's just gone. I know it should be in the utilities folder....did a search of the computer and it just doesn't show up anywhere. Is there any way to get it back??
Thanks for any help you can give me!

What you need to do is to open the Applications folder on your hard disk, not the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder. From there, open the Utilities folder and look for an application named Disk Utility inside. Once you've found the Disk Utility application, double-click it and use it to copy your DVDs.

  • Disk Repair Utility Full Disk Error

Today, my MBP froze, as in it no longer responded to keypresses or moving the mouse, so I held the power button until it powered off. Whenever I try to power it back on, it comes up with the apple logo on a gray screen, and a progress bar briefly appears beneath the apple logo, flashes a few times and dissappears, then the computer turns off.
By running the disk repair utility from the OSX install disk, the OSX partition of my hard drive needs to be repaired. When I try to repair it, it gives me an error saying that the disk is too full to do a repair on (I probably have ~10GB free, so this makes sense), and I need to wipe my disk and reinstall OSX .
I have windows installed via bootcamp and I can still boot into that and see my contents of the OSX partition (e.g. I can play my music, watch movies, open documents all of which are on the OSX partition, I just can't boot to it.).
Although probably unrelated, I've run the diagnostics, and everything came up okay. I've also tried holding shift during boot (trying to get OSX into safe mode) and holding command-option-P-R (clear the PRAM) during boot, neither of which helped.
My current strategy is copy a lot of data off my OSX partition from within my windows partition to an external HDD, in order to free up space on my OSX drive, so that hopefully disk repair can do its job. Does anyone know if this will work, or if not, can anyone recommend an alternate work around?

Backup your files, if possible.  Your only recourse is to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.  Do not copy or backup files from Windows.  If at all possible boot from another drive like your external HDD by installing OS X on the external drive (unless it is already a bootable drive.)  You can then copy your data from the faulty OS X volume before erasing it.
You should never permit your free space to drop so low.  One should maintain 10-12 GBs or 10-15% of the volume's total capacity, whichever is greater.
Since this problem will likely recur I suggest you consider just replacing the drive with one that is considerably larger.  I would also be sure to arrange to maintain a bootable backup on an external drive in case problems such as this one occur.

  • Trying to Disk Copy/Clone of MacBook Pro Using Drive Genius 3

I am trying to make a clone or sector-by-sector copy of my main disk (500Gb) of my MacBook Pro (10.6.8)- using Drive Genius 3
My main disk also has a Bootcamp partition.
I am using a 1Tb external HD with 2 partitions - partition 1 is 50Gb and contains Startup utilities and Drive Genius 3.
I am trying to make a disk copy of my main disk and wish to store the copy on partition 2 (950Gb).
I booted up my MacBook using partition 1 of the external HD - opened DG3 and selected 'Duplicate'.
Then under 'Drive' - I selected the main disk of 500Gb - but under 'Destination' - it would not allow me to select partition 2.
The window only showed the 1TB ext. Hd which itself was unselectable.
How do I get my disk copy stored on partition 2?

    Do this instead:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive partition. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Disk Copy .img w/out resource fork

I recently zeroed-out and repartitioned my Wallstreet hard-drive. Before I did so, I put all important files (mostly a decade's worth of Word .docs) in a compressed, read-only .img created by Disk Copy.
Due to cramped-ness of my 2 gb drive, lack of CD burner, and difficulty Apple-Talking between OS 9 and Tiger, I decided to have Disk Copy write the .img directly to my USB thumb drive.
Unfortunately, the thumb drive was naturally in a FAT format. And since it took upwards of four hours to create and compress the .img via my USB 1.1 connection, I decided not to test mount it before I proceeded with the repartition. And so I didn't realize until much too late that the .img I'd created was doomed to fail from the start, being without a resource fork.
So now I've spent two days trying to recover the pristine beauties of the .img data fork but have so far failed.
I've used ResEdit to create a fork and copy and paste into it the three necessary resource types from various uncorrupted .imgs made specifically for the purpose. I've reset creator and type to rohd and ddsk. I've tried fiddling with the code in the bcem resource to trick Disk Copy into mounting the issue. I've turned off all checksumming. I've tried both Disk Copy and the Disk Utilities in Jaguar and Tiger. And I've tried to mount it with a disk-mounting utility in Windows XP, thinking that perhaps a Windows utility might succeed, not needing the resource fork.
Nothing has worked. I get a variety of errors depending on which OS I'm working in, but the gist is the same. File is damaged; can't be mounted.
I've been through all the what-ifs and should-haves, and I've ransacked Google and various boards for ideas, and I'm still stuck.
Does anyone know of a method whereby the contents of an (unfortunately) compressed Disk Copy .img can be recovered without the resource fork? I've got 835 mb of perfect data that I can't access for the lack of a few k.
Are there any bcem resource hacks I can try?
    Any third party utilities?
    Windows utilities?
I'd even be willing to try hacking Disk Copy itself if somebody could get me pointed in the right direction.
Disk Copy, give me back my legions!!
Thanks for any and all help.
    Dave

    Ha HA!
The problem was not quite what I thought.
The problem wasn't that I had saved the .img to a FAT thumb drive. The problem was that I copied the contents of that FAT disk onto my Tiger Intel iMac and then later recopied it onto the FAT drive--without including the OS-9-created FINDER.DAT and RESOURCE.FRK files when I did so; I simply grabbed the .img file, thinking it had all the info I needed.
    But then I read this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121732
When I went back and looked on my Intel drive, I found the RESOURCE.FRK and FINDER.DAT files still patiently waiting for me. I copied those files (and Desktop DB, Desktop DF, FILEID.DAT for good measure) onto the FAT thumb drive along with the .img file and plugged the drive into the Wallstreet. Lo and behold, only the .img file was visible. OS 9 had automatically taken the information from the other files (including the longed-for resource fork) and incorporated them back into the .img file.
I copied it onto the Wallstreet, and bingo! it mounted perfectly.
    Yay!
Perhaps some poor soul in the future will benefit from my experience (although given the state of OS 9 these days, that's probably not too likely.)
    Thanks all,
    Dave

  • Changing burn speed in Disk Copy

I am using 10.2.8 so I use Disk Copy rather than Disk Utility to burn a disk image (.dmg) to a CD. It doesn't give me an option to change the burn speed and I can tell by the quick result that it is using the full 8X speed of my burner. I want to use 4X which from my experience with this burner is more reliable. How can I change the burn speed?
If you want to suggest that I buy 10.4, hold off and let someone answer the question about 10.2.8 first. Thanks.

Is the burner original Apple equipment or a third-party unit added later? On some Macs (what kind is yours--it may be helpful to know), third-party drives do not get fully supported without a little third-party software. I installed a Lite-On 52X burner in my Beige G3 with 10.2.8. According to lots of places, that should support Finder burning but it doesn't fully; like you, I get no speed control. Even after upgrading to Panther It did not fully work.
At the suggestion of the burner's reseller, I use the freeware BurnX Free. Problem's gone for me but I haven't tried it with .dmg burning.

  • Where's Disk Copy?

I was about to duplicate an old disk, make a disk image of it, and found that Disk Copy doesn't seem to be anywhere on my computer.
Disk Utility has a disk image option, but doesn't seem to include the option to make an image directly from a disk, at least not so far as I can tell.
Has this app been removed from Tiger? Or did it just disappear somehow? Any ideas? And if it has been removed, does anyone know how to dupe a CD with Disk Utility, which seems to be the only app left?
    Thanks

Never mind, I solved it. Guess I jsut needed to look a bit more.

  • "Disk Copy app unexpectedly quit" error trying to install "Firefox 3.6.dmg"

I just installed Mac OS X 10.1 from a disk I got on eBay. My machine is a Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics), PowerPC G4 processor 450 MHz.
I checked to see that Firefox 3.6 will work on OS X 10.1 and later.
When I double-click "Firefox 3.6.dmg", I get a little error window that says:
"The application Disk Copy has unexpectedly quit.
The system and other applications have not been affected."
    Will someone please help?

As I have said you have some pretty old software and the problems so far will likely be your typical experience in using it.
You have 10.1. There are five updates for that 10.1.1 through to 10.1.5
perform the updates as required to reach 10.1.5
You may have to do them in order depending what version your have.
This wiki page below has a convenient collection of update links to Apple at the bottom.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS_Xv10.1
Which particular version you have is found under the Menu item  About this Mac, will tell you the version.
After you have installed the last update,
    download this utility from here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106900
    and run Repair Privileges.
You really should consider a later Mac OS like 10.3 or 10.4 if you can afford it.

  • Disk repair utility & printer issue

I will admit right now that until last night, have never touched an iMac but I have a friend that due to health issues, needs a hand. Can I ask a couple of questions of this forum?
1: She has an external Lacie H/D that is making wierd noises after being knocked over. Her backup software says to run the Disk Repair Utility. I haven't the slightest idea where to find this Disk Repair Utility, nor if I can run it on an external drive.
2: Her printer, mac book and iMac were recently moved from one location to another home. I need her printer connected wirelessly to both computers. I was able to get her Macbook connected but I am having issues with iMac. Can I uninstall her printer and reinstall? Not even sure how to do that basic process so advice would be appreciated.

Disk Utility should be able to check the LaCie - whether it will be able to complete any repairs that may be needed will become obvious when it's attempted. Disk Utility is normally in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder.
Regarding the printer, yes you can uninstall it in System Preferences>Printers & Scanners (or similar wording depending on version of OS X). The +/- buttons add/remove printers.
If you still have problems, post back.

    Hi,
The utility is case sensitive, in your parameters you have put /S:PLAN but in your copyapp.properties you have lowercase plan_
so the utility is looking for PLAN_JDBC_DATABASE_TYPE and won't find it because you have plan_JDBC_DATABASE_TYPE
either change the parameter or the properties file to match

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.
