"attempting to copy to the disk C:\ failed. the file name was invalid or too long." This was the message that I keep getting after trying to "add folder to library" of multiple tracks from an external hard drive. it only happens after a certain period of time.. i get about half of my tracks added before this message pops up. when i first got my i pod it worked fine. but after i hooked up my i pod several times without having that external drive on... the i pod took over that drive letter that my external drive used to use. so.. when i turned on my external drive, it was given a new letter.. then i tunes would not recognize those 1500 tracks that came from my external drive (explanation points listed next to tracks). so.. I deleted all of those files manually, then tried to add folder to library again from the new letter coordinating to my external hd. I kept getting that message above. after that i deleted all files associated with i tunes.. and uninstalled i tunes.. then did a reinstall.. did i tunes update from site... and tried to just add the set of tracks from that external hd... still same **** error. only now.. after i say ok to error... i tunes continues for like 2 seconds.. then has to shut down... ****!!! can anyone help me with this... anyone?

I tried removing the files i just added but it didnt help. I tried restoring the ipod but it doesnt help. I know its not hardware problem. How do I find out what files are messing up my ipod.

Eh, there could be an issue with one of the audio files it is trying to sync over. Best bet is to do a fresh restore on the iPod and then follow the steps in the following article to see if it addresses your issue. (and yes, I know it's not the exact error you're receiving, but try it)

I had the same problem. And to think I actually HESITATED at installing the update. Oh wait... this happened AFTER the update. Funny how often that happens, eh? But I digress...
Anyway, I had two errors- initially the iPod stated my music library was somewhere else, and did I want to sync to that library. When I said yes, it reverted then to the "attempting to copy to disk"error. Further, iTunes showed that my iPod on the iTunes was EMPTY. However, my actual iPod hadn't lost any data. Confused yet? So am I.
*Last ditch effort- I went back in, and updated all my permissions, did a permission repair and then a permission verify.
    * Also did a disk verify on the iPod to make sure it wasn't sick.
*I also drug a new song into my library.
*Changed from the USB plugin to the firewire. (Although I did this earlier in the day, and hadn't seen a noticeble change)
    * Opened the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. (should have done that a few hours ago)
When my first pop up asked about did I want to sync to the mystery persons library, I said yes. (At the worst, I have all my music and could reimport all 30G of it, if necessary.) And immediately, the sync began, and began appropriately. However, it IS re-syncing every single song I had on the iPod to begin with.
I suspect something nasty happened in the iTunes update, ever since the intel thing happened, the updates have been a bit sketchy. I really like Apple products, but I've gone through 3 iPods due to software meltdowns, and it's a bit frustrating.
    Good luck!

    help?

The quickest way to correct this error USUALLY is to restore your iPod. Make sure you have all your Music and stuff on your PC for a restore will wipe clean your iPod and then use iTunes to transfer everything back to the iPod off your PC. follow the link below on ways to correct this and links to info about "Restoring" your iPod

  • Help - Attempting to copy to the disk "J" failed. An unknown error occured

pls help I get the above error Attempting to copy to the disk "J" failed. An unknown error occured (-69) when I connect my ipod nano 8GB Gen 3 and try to synch. Ive got the latest Itunes software, Ive done the 5 r's, Ive tried a different USB cable. I can't think of anything else left to try, when I d/c on my computer it doesn't bring up my ipod but under device manager its there, says its working properly

This is the same thing that just happened to me. My error message reads as follows: "Attempting to copy to the disk "C's IP" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to". I've reset and restored. It still will not add the last 3 songs that I have purchased from Itunes. I have completely read the manual and can't find anything that deals with this problem. I have only had my ipod for 10 months. I hope someone can help with this.

  • Solved "Attempting to copy to disk "ipod" failed. Could not be read from or

Finally found a solution that worked for me when getting this error message on an 2nd Gen. iPod Nano.
There is a lot of discussion on this topic with no real answers coming back other than to read this article/topic. So, I wanted to share a solution that worked on mine.
The background: Computer running Windows XP Pro. Up-to-date iTunes and iPod software. I downloaded several CDs into iTunes and synced with no problem. I made a few purchases from iTunes Store and would get to one song that when I tried to sync, the following error message appeared; "Attempting to copy to the disk "ipod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." When I deleted the song, then I could sync without receiving the error message, but the purchased song would not be included. I restored my iPod, my iTunes was up-to-date, ran chk dsk, emailed support, searched the forums, followed instructions, re-downloaded the problem song from iTunes Store, BUT as long as that problem song was included, I could not sync without getting the error message.
The solution (this worked in my situation): After doing all of the above and not getting rid of this problem, I set the iPod to manually manage my music and synced the iPod (without the problem song, which was already deleted from iTunes). When I deleted the song from the iTunes library, I would always click the button to keep the song in the files instead of sending it to trash. I then went into the iTunes music folder where my songs were kept and opened the file for the problem song. I dragged the song back into my purchases folder in iTunes. From the purchases folder, I dragged the song over to my iPod in iTunes. Then synced. The problem song synced without any problems and the error message did not appear. Thinking that something was still not right, I went back and clicked on the button to NOT manually manage my music and then re-synced. Same good result. No error message. The problem song sings along just fine now with no more error message.
I haven't tried to download another song just yet, so this may not hold, but at least this worked and resolved this problem song. There may be some other factors through all of the work that I did above in trying to resolve this problem that contributed, but it wasn't until I set the iPod to manually manage the music and brought back in the problem song that the error message disappeared. Hopefully this might help. It worked for me so I'm happy now.
      Windows XP Pro

I see you've stumbled upon the catch-all article for this incredibly generic error message. Note the phrasing of it: "DISK cannot be READ FROM or written to." Notice that the error doesn't specifically state that it's the iPod disk that cannot be read or written. I used to get this error all the time when I had my library stored on a remote server. The issue being that my machine couldn't access my songs fast enough to copy them to the iPod w/o timing out, and so the disk, in this case my file server, could not be read from. Since you mentioned previously that you're having some anomalies with your library, I would say concentrate on correcting that, rather than worrying that your iPod is kaput.

  • After trying to sync my ipad to a new pc, i get this error message "Attempting to copy to the disk "windows" failed.  the device is not connected."  but it is connected.

I have been trying sync my ipad to a new pc and I get this message after the sync fails:
"Attempting to copy to the disk "windows" failed.  The device is not connected."
The device is connected, what is wrong here?

This is a common problem that is most likely caused by files that are not marked to have proper read/write permissions.
To solve this problem, follow these steps.
    1. Close iTunes.
    2. Using the finder, Ctrl-click the folder that contains your music files, then select Get Info.
    3. Ensure that the Owner is set to have Read & Write privileges. Choose to Apple to enclosed items…
Once you have modified permissions, fire up iTunes and try to sync your music again. If it throws the same error message and still doesn’t work, research more about permissions in Mac OS X, as there could be something else not right with the permissions of your music files.

  • Recovery Disk "Copy File Fail"

    Equipment: HP Notebook G56-WM129
Operating system: Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium edition
    Issue:
HDD Crashed, after 1 year and 1 month of use the hard drive up and quit working, the computer doesn't even recognize that it is installed.  Ran the test from BIOS and it confirmed that I have a dead drive.  Unplugged cleaned and repluged connection cable produced the same results. A dead Drive.  Now that we have determined that the drive is dead, inoperable, and unusable we'll move on to the part where my other issue lies.
To replace the HDD I purchased a new 60Gb SSD. (More expensive than a HHD, but is supposed to be awesome on speed)  Went with the 60 Gig because it is costly and I didn't know at the time Windows 7 uses 25 Gb's of space (WOW).
I never created any recovery disc, so I purchased a set from this website using my computers information.  I went ahead and decided to upgrade my ram at this time as well from 3 Gb/s to 8Gb/s.   All the stuff came in and I was excited to say the least.  New toys and all, just like Christmas.
I put the new SSD and RAM in, boot up the computer the BIOS recognized them both (Great).  I put in the 1st recover disk and proceeded to boot from it.  The program runs and wants me to reformat drive (enter no ends the program). So, I enter yes.  Reformatting goes quickly and moves on to the next phase of copying the files.  Then I get the error:
Pop up box appears with "Reducer" as the title and tells me
              COPY FILE FAILS
    From D:\PRELOAD\BASE.WIM
      TO: C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE.WIM
    Press enter to retry.
Pressing enter does absolutely no good (Nothing happens, pressed it a lot).  The disc won't eject and the only thing I can do is hold in the power button until the computer shuts down.  I power the CPU back up, it says it is starting windows and it starts the process all over to Error on the same thing at the same spot. 0% Progress.
After several hours of looking on the boards, I see various people have the same problem, Only once did I see someone have a solution, but it didn't work for me.  It had me follow a link to a destination on HP to download a bootable disk that loaded and showed a picture of 3 circles with no direction on what to do.  I finally saw where I am supposed to eject the disc power it down, start it up with the recovery disc.  But this just leads me back to the issue of FILE COPY FAILs.
I borrowed a copy of Windows 7 (64 bit Home Premium) from a friend and it loaded flawlessly, had me up and running in no time.
But I only have the code that came with my HP and it would not work to activate this windows.  So, I popped the recovery disc back in hoping that all will go well since I have successfully installed Windows.  However, I am back to my original issue and really don't want to have to spend another $200 on an OS when I am supposed to have one and have paid for the Recovery disk from HP.
From my understanding, this is not a Microsoft issue, but a HP issue.

Usually replacing the hdd with one that is smaller than the original will cause Recovery to fail.A work-around that many use to replace with an SSD is to use Imaging software to make an Image of the hdd to restore to the SSD. The Imaging software must be one that has capabilty to shrink the image to a smaller hdd/partition. That is the one flaw in my favorite Imaging app,Macrium. I think Paragon Backup has the capabity to shrink, and possibly (not free) Acronis True Image. I have also used Disk Management in Windows 7 to shrink the C: partition before Imaging to allow it to be restored to a smaller hdd or partition. Any of these would require a working SATA hdd to install Win 7 on to do the Imaging.
As for the alternate install of Windows 7, you can usually get it activated using your key and the phone activation method. Tips HERE
