Disk device going bad on Notebook

Getting alerts that disc device is going bad on my HP 2000 Notebook PC, and says I need to back up my files or I will lose them. Says the Disc name is Hitachi HTS543232A7A384 SATA Disc Device Volume:C:\;D:\  I contacted HP tech support and they said it needs to be replaced.  I don't know anything about computers so I have a lot of questions.  Is this disc the "Hard Drive" for my PC?  Approximately how much will it cost to get it fixed? Would it be cheaper to get a new PC? (paid $300 for this PC) What would make the disc go bad after only a year and a half? Was it caused from a virus? If I continue to use my PC until it completely stops working, will it do more harm?  I used my Norton 360 to back up my files but I don't know what I'm doing. Do I need to configure it somehow or does Norton automatically know what to save? Will Norton save things like pictures and Emails or does it only save things that make the PC operate? If anyone can answer any of these questions, I would appreciate the help. Thanks!

Very good questions. Yes, it is commonly known as the "hard drive". An exact replacement for your drive is $43 on amazon.com:
    http://www.amazon.com/Travelstar-Z5K320-HTS543232A7A384-Internal-Drive/dp/B00555EG7S
For a few dollars more you can get a larger capacity drive that is faster and will improve performance. Let us know if you are interested in that.
This shows how to replace the drive.

    Norton 360 tutorial:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHVDg1dgksY
You just pick what you want to back up. Did you make a restore DVD when the laptop was new? If not perhaps you still can using HP Recovery in the program menu. That will be the easiest way for you to get software onto the new drive.
Hard drives are very mysterious and fragile and can go bad for no apparent reason, but it is an urban myth that a virus can make a hard drive go bad. That is why we have to back up, back up, back up. Never trust important data to one hard drive.

  • Unknown hard disk devices after LVM blunder

    Hi all,
I have a rather weird hard disk partitioning setup because I always find myself needing to adjust my partitions from time to time. So I decided to create many logical partitions and put my personal data on an LVM partition that spans over multiple logical partitions... so that I could resize easily and create space for other stuff as required.
The problem - I created a FAT32 file system on one of the partitions (/dev/sda16) that wasn't part of the LVM at the time (no resizing required). After doing this, I now have 2 disk devices (/dev/dm-0 and /dev/dm-1) that weren't / shouldn't be there. Also, the partitions that are part of the LVM setup are detected as FAT32 partitions by fdisk. The non-LVM changes I made with fdisk and parted while for LVM management I use Kvpm. I grew the LVM Volume group and Logical volumes to fill the disk, including the FAT32 partition I created earlier.
    Here is some output:

  • Cluster Disk keeps going offline. Service or application failed

We currently have 2 servers, both housing 3 VMs (6 nodes total).  2 Disk are used to house these VM's.  Cluster Disk 1 keeps going offline, which kicks 2 of our servers offline until we migrate the disk to another node (puts it into redirected
mode).  We then have to restart the server to re-establish to connection to the cluster disk.  Digging around in event viewer, I saw the following:
Cluster resource 'Cluster Disk 2' in clustered service or application 'b0a21897-e59b-46c9-a495-273dc5ad2aea' failed.
Cluster physical disk resource 'Cluster Disk 2' cannot be brought online because the associated disk could not be found. The expected signature of the disk was '{92eb716c-6878-42ad-b7de-f3879d72e232}'. If the disk was replaced or restored, in
the Failover Cluster Manager snap-in, you can use the Repair function (in the properties sheet for the disk) to repair the new or restored disk. If the disk will not be replaced, delete the associated disk resource.
The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'b0a21897-e59b-46c9-a495-273dc5ad2aea' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service
    or application.
I ran the cluster validation test and all seemed to check out except for Cluster Disk 1 and the two servers associated with this server, as shown below:
Validating cluster resource Cluster Disk 2.
This resource is marked with a state of 'Offline'. The functionality that this resource provides is not available while it is in the offline state. The resource may be put in this state by an administrator or program. It may also be a newly created
resource which has not been put in the online state or the resource may be dependent on a resource that is not online. Resources can be brought online by choosing the 'Bring this resource online' action in Failover Cluster Manager.
This resource is marked with a state of 'Failed' instead of 'Online'. This failed state indicates that the resource had a problem either coming online or had a failure while it was online. The event logs and cluster logs may have information
that is helpful in identifying the cause of the failure.
All disks are housed on our SAN.  Any idea where I can start troubleshooting further?  Changing the signature of the disk or finding out which application is failing?  All help is greatly appreciated.

Please, help is greatly appreciated.  I have been trying to find a solution for almost a week.  I have a feeling this has to do with the disk.  We have 3 CSV's but the only ones in question are CSV 2 & 3. Cluster Disk 2 is the disk that
keeps going offline.  Cluster Disk 3 has no problems at all.  They both are GPT volumes, however, after running a "cluster res", I received the following output:
Listing private properties for 'Cluster Disk 2':
    T  Resource             Name                           Value
    D  Cluster Disk 2       DiskIdType                     1 (0x1)
    D  Cluster Disk 2       DiskSignature                0 (0x0)
    S  Cluster Disk 2       DiskIdGuid                     {92eb716c-6878-42ad-b7de-f3879d72e232}
    ===============================================================
Listing private properties for 'Cluster Disk 3':
    T  Resource             Name                           Value
    D  Cluster Disk 3       DiskIdType                     1 (0x1)
    D  Cluster Disk 3       DiskSignature                 994692308 (0x3b49ccd4)
    S  Cluster Disk 3       DiskIdGuid                     {4f27bc43-6964-466e-a77d-2321b2b0b718}
    =============================================================
As shown, cluster disk 1 has a disk signature but NOT a diskID.  Cluster disk 2 as a DiskID but NOT a signature.  It may be beneficial to add that cluster disk 3 used to be an MBR disk.  Not sure if that makes any difference given the output
above...Performing DISKPART on the same disks shows the following (Don't mind the naming scheme, I know it can be a bit confusing)
    Disk 1 (Cluster Disk 2):
    HP P2000G3 FC/iSCSI  Multi-Path Disk Device
    Disk ID: {92EB716C-6878-42AD-B7DE-F3879D72E232}
    Disk 3 (Cluster Disk 3):
    HP P2000G3 FC/iSCSI  Multi-Path Disk Device
    Disk ID: {4F27BC43-6964-466E-A77D-2321B2B0B718}
    ================================================================
Comparing the two, it selects the correct DiskID that was taken from "cluster res" command.
The error in my initial post states a signature was expected.  If I am not mistaken, in win2008 it uses "DiskSignature". The lack of this signature being populated for Cluster Disk 2 was resulting in the resources failing to come online.  So
how can i go about fixing this signature issue.  Again, all help is appreciated since I am fairly new to all of this.

  • Could both my internal drives be going bad at once?

i posted an issue a moment ago about a write protection warning, which has never happened. so i run disk utility on this particular drive - and it stops half way through with a random error!
ok, so i start dumping files onto my other internal drive like a mad man. and what do you know? when i try and open the particular folder on the backup drive which holds the data i just copied over, my system stalls for about 10 seconds and then apparently restarts my finder!
could it be that both my drives are going bad at once? what could be causing this madness. i ran disk utility on the backup drive and it went without a hitch, but solved nothing.
    please help!

Save your contents of your user folders to a external drive that you know that works in addition to the other internal. Especially your iTunes folder and User/name/Library/Safari & Mail folders contents.
You might have something going wrong with your boot drive, it could be a bad sector, a bad OS install, corrupted OS file who the heck knows, but it's looking like your going to need to Erase with Zero option in DU (to eliminate bad sectors) and reinstall Tiger fresh, use your same name, drive name and password, update, install apps from fresh sources (don't use Migration Assistant, doesn't do copy protection and copies blindly) and copy those folders mentioned above back to the same location.
If that doesn't work, it could be a mechanical problem, which the drive needs to be replaced under warranty or AppleCare. Give them a call and they can send you a new one and you can replace it yourself, holding your CC hostage until they receive the bad one.
Later once your back up and running, learn to clone your boot drive to a external drive just for cases like this. It's boot-able, you can fix the original drive, you can copy files over and just erase and reverse clone.
It will save your bacon. Read my text docs.

Oh if you do a fresh install, might as well do Tiger and iLife 06 in the process.

  • Modem going bad?

How can I tell if my internal modem is going bad? I have the dreaded dial-up and lately, I've been having problems with the modem disconnecting as soon as it connects (with the drop-down message saying I should check my settings). I try to connect again, and usually it works the second time. I recently had to change my modem setting from v.90 to v.92 because, out of the blue, it wouldn't connect to my server. I've never had any problems like this in the year and a half that I've had my Mac Mini.
    Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

You need to run the modem in router mode..
I would either bridge the TC or remove it completely because you need to get exact log info from the modem.
Do isolation test.. ie remove all phones and filters and other devices from your phone line. Reboot the modem.. and wait for restart to complete.
Copy out of the modem the full line stats, sync info and even better if you can get cli access and do some deeper level stuff.. (most of the tools I use are PC only.. ie dmt tools).
Then make sure the log is turned on and giving max info and watch your connection.. if it drops without anything happening on the modem,, then the ISP is having issues.. which is possible although connection of cable and adsl is loose or non-existent.
If it drops sync keep track of how often and the line stats, Particularly the SNR..
See if you have an rf noise source in the house.. more if you are interested.

  • Is my hard drive going bad?

What are some of the signs of a hard drive going bad?
Lately my computer has been acting funny. Every few seconds I hear noises like my computer is trying to do something but then it winds down then stops. It's sounds like it could be the hard drive, but I'm not sure. It even does this when the computer is in sleep mode. I'm not sure what else to do. I've ran several Utillity programs such as Tech Tool Pro and Disk Warrior. I've also ran Disk Utility. While it's doing this it sometimes causes a lag (spinning beach ball) in some of the programs I'm using.
Does it sound like I may need to buy a new hard drive? If so, any suggestions would be much appreciated. Right now I have a 80gig hard drive.
    thanks,
    Tim

    Hello again Tim,
Maybe your machine is not in as bad shape as you are trying not to think about. You have had no errors reported by the hardware test or Tech Tool. Chances are you have a corrupted system cache, internet cache and a couple of .plist (preference) files, which common and not difficult to cure.
First thing to do is to install and run a cache cleaner. I've attached the link to Onyx. After you've installed and opened Onyx select the cleaning button. Then select system cache and internet cache and run it.
You should also delete the preference files for Mail and for Safari and any other apps that seem to hang. The easiest way to find them is by typing the app's name into the search box of a Finder window and delete the .plist files. You can delete any of these files for slow apps without danger of removing important files - anything with .plist is OK. I've also attached a link to free app that checks all your system preference files. It may pick up on the corruption without eliminating them one by one.
Don't pull the RAM yet! There's still a few more tricks to try.

Here are step by step instructions with pictures on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the applications Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. They make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive. http://www.bombich.com/index.html or http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

  • Are there any clues that an external hard drive is going bad?

My external hard drive is 2 years old.  Are there any clues indicating it is going bad?

Open Disk Utility, select your external disk in the sidebar and verify the drive. If it doesn't show any issuue, the disk works correctly

  • Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J DVD burning problems - drive going bad? replacement?

I purchased a couple spindles of TDK DVD+R DL discs from Newegg last week; got them yesterday and stuck one in my iMac to start burning some of this stuff I've got backed up (using Toast 10), and ran into a problem... it failed almost immediately with a "medium error."
I tried Disk Utility and it quit in a similar fashion on several discs, never actually burning anything to them.
I've stuck with TDK in the past because they seemed to be the most compatible, but now I was thinking that maybe they changed something in the manufacturing process that caused them to not work anymore.
Fortunately, I have access to a pretty new MacBook and tried using the discs in there, and they worked just fine with the same data and the same version of Toast.
About an hour ago, I pulled out a stack of TDK single-layer DVDs I bought a few months ago (and that worked with no issues in my iMac at that time), and slipped one into my iMac to burn a smaller set of files, and it failed in exactly the same way as the DL discs did yesterday.
Since then, I've been searching everywhere for information on this (including firmware updates and a place to buy a replacement drive) and found very little.
What I did find suggests that the drive might be going bad (or at the very least choked with dust).
I can't find anything solid on what drive I could buy to replace it myself, though.
And I'm not very optimistic about taking it to the Genius Bar, as I don't have AppleCare and it sounds like they would just put in an equally failure-prone Matshita drive that'll be dead within a year.
I'll try cleaning it as soon as I can locate one of those brush discs and see if that helps.
I've also noticed that it will occasionally stop mounting discs until after a restart.

I have a 24" iMac, Approx 2 Years Old, Mine was having the same problems as yours, I had Memorex DL DVD + R and half the time it would spit them back out and the other half it would fail at 50%, when before it would read and write fine. So I figured it was hardware when i was having the same problem on the boot camp side. So two days ago I took it in to the apple store in plano, they looked at it, said they'd put a new drive in, And it was free thanks to the apple care plan I had with it. Just picked it up a few hours ago and I just burned a DL DVD and it worked. So my suggestion is visit your apple store and maybe they'll replace it, ive heard amounts as high as $450 for replacements without the protection plan, maybe you could go firewire/usb external drive?
By the way, I can't remember what drive I had on my machine, wanna say it started with an "O", but they replaced it with a Pioneer, very quiet and seems fast.
    Good Luck

Don't post in all caps.  Besides being more difficult to read it's tantamount to shouting and is considered rude in forums.  What problems are you having? What model Mac do you have, how much RAM and free space on the boot drive?
Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and try the following in order as needed:
1 - select Disk Utility and repair both the disk and disk permissions.  Reboot normally.
2 - reinstall the Mavericks system.

  • Pavilion dv7 horizontal lines - Display going bad?

DV7-7025dx bought in 2012. Today, on boot, horizontal lines right from the moment I turn it on. Lines are so bad I can barely see anything. Booted into windows - lines still there. After a few minutes they cleared up. Powered down, removed battery, reset bios, rebooted. Still there. Is the display/adapter going bad?

    Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook and issues with the screen flickers and going pink and green. Here is a link to a document that will help you troubleshoot the image on screen flickers, has lines or distorted colors. Have you connected a monitor to the Notebook to check if it happens there as well? Here is a link on how to clean the fans as this could be an issue. If this does not display on the Monitor it could be a connection issue with the LCD screen or the inverter cable. Please let me know how this goes. Thanks.

  • Memory going bad???

My K7T266 Pro2-RU system has been running stably since I built it last November. However, yesterday I started getting frequent system lock-ups, and I couldn't find anything I had done that would have caused it. I found that I could reproduce the problem when booting a Win98 floppy and running the MEMTEST program, which pretty well ruled out anything in WinXP. Then I discovered that changing the FSB from 133 down to 100 "cures" (groan) the problem (I'm running an XP1500+ and one stick of PC2100 DDR RAM). It's very repeatable - MEMTEST locks up at 133, works fine at 100. My question is this - could this be the memory module going bad, or is some other degradation more likely??? [All components are high quality, no recent H/W changes.]

    Speed Fan shows +3.3V=3.26-3.31, +5=4.95-5.0, +12=12.16-12.22, -12=-12.12 to -12.03, -5=-5.35 to -5.45
Looks like the problem is NOT with the memory - I picked up another stick (Micron vs. Crucial) and see the same situation. Also tried BIOS 3.4 and 3.6. System seems to work fine at 100 FSB (now with 512MB!), but it's irritating!!

  • Is there a way to detect the event when device goes to sleep and the screen blackens?

I want to detect the event when the iOS device goes to sleep and the screen blackens?
Is there any way to do it?

    Hi,
A small idea, please check whether it will work or not.
You can achieve this by using combination of DNS server and reverse proxy server.( Customized apache). Make 'A' record for www.abcd.com to reverse proxy server IP address in your DNS.
So it will resolve your reverse proxy IP address for requests.
Configure appche to accept incoming request for www.abcd.com and points towards www.abcd.com/parameters.
I think this will solve your problem.  Only one condition is that proxy server will communicate with www.abcd.com on behalf of client.
Follow the link for configuration of reverse proxy server

  • WLSE doesn't seem to notice it when an Aironet device goes down

    WLSE type: 1105, version 2.7
    Aironet 1100 devices (267 pieces), IOS 12.2(13)JA4
After the upgrade from version 2.6 to 2.7 we have a problem with the WLSE. Device discoveries and inventories run without a problem, but whenever a device goes down the WLSE doesn't seem to notice.
With a sniffer we found the WLSE's polling the device, but there's no follow-up when there's no reply. As a result the device stays green.
All configurations are the same with the exeption of one location. Here we've configured the WDS and this is the only location on which the WLSE reacts in the correct way.
On several other locations there might be one or two devices on which the WLSE reacts correctly, but these are exeptions. We have compared configuration files, but can't find any differences between the devices.
Whenever the WLSE does discover a failing device (with no WDS configured) it generates a P1 severity fault (default was P2).
In case these devices have become reachable again the P1 severity fault is automatically acknowledged and remains this way. So far I haven't been able to clear these faults and therefor the device will keep it's alert status in the reportview.
I do hope somebody has some idea about what's going on.
After I encountered these problems after the upgrade I've started from scratch and used a clean installation of version 2.7. and a new discovery of our network.
I really don't know what went wrong. Anybody with any suggestions is very welcome to vent them.
    Thanks for your help,
    Corine

I'm having a similar issue. 500+ AP1200 units, IOS 15JA, newest WLSE version. Most of the time when a unit goes down, it will generate a SNMP unreachable fault message, and we are set to have the WLSE send an email in the event of a SNMP unreachable. That's great. Except once in awhile, it won't generate the fault. The device could be powered completely down for three or four days, and I'd never get a fault message. It's driving me nuts. All these AP's are configured the same using the exact same template, with only the IP info changed.
