Disk drive broken?

I think there is something wrong with my disk drive? When I put a CD into my iMac's disk drive, it will accept it then eject it after 30 seconds or so. I have used ( and played such as battlefield 2142) these disks in the past. Now, when I want to use the exact same disks, they won't read. All the disks are in good condition. Even the installation disk wont read! Everything just gets ejected! >:( I'm so frustrated. Someone please help me!

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Did this start happening right after the 10.5.7 update? If so, try repairing disk permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Then try a CD.

  • Is the disk drive broken?

I'm fixing up a family friend's 1st gen Macbook and am experiencing a problem with the disk drive. When I was putting in a CD it wouldn't go in, and it feels as if there is a disc already in there. In fact, I'm almost positive there is because when I received it her teenage son asked "By the way... is there a...uh... cd in there by any chance?"
I've tried everything to eject it. I've tried commanding it in the terminal, using the eject button, pulling it out with tweezers, etc, but nothing works. When I try to eject it the computer doesn't even attempt to, it just sits there silently and nothing moves. I'm pretty sure it's dead, but just wanted to know others opinions. It doesn't register that there is a disc in there either.
And if it is dead, would it be cheaper to buy an external CD drive or a replacement to install myself? She's not willing to pay to have Apple fix it, considering the reason I have it is to replace a LCD screen that she cracked and left for a year and a half. I'm a beginner considering I'm only sixteen myself, so if it's an easy repair I would be willing to do it if need be.
    Thanks in advance.

  • IMac disk drive broken?

Hi guys, this is my first post on here so my apologies if I have done anything wrong. Anyways I've been having problems with my mid 2010 iMac, the disk drive isn't reading any disks. It was recently making a grinding noise when disks were inserted and would then spit them back out. I since upgraded to osx mavericks and the disk drive started working again for a few days. Today the problems resumed, I inserted a disk and it won't even read it now, the disk drive is making sort of a beeping noise (sounds like the laser is beeping?) and I can't eject it either. There is no disk being shown on the home screen and when I press the eject button nothing happens. The disk drive is trying to eject the disk by its self after it tries to read the disk but fails to do so. I was wondering if anyone could help me with how to remove the disk from the iMac and also if anyone else has had this problem? Also if there is a way to fix these problems with the disk drive? thanks in advance guys!

Actually, pretty much any iMac later than the second generation iMac G5 ALS (the "Ambient Light Sensor" model) are quite challenging to take apart & put back together without damaging something. Taking apart any of them after the ALS involves removing delicate items held in place by adhesives, removing hard to reach connectors, & so on. Not impossible but definitely not something the average user should try.
For that reason, I suggest an even more obvious option: instead of paying to have the internal replaced, just buy an external optical drive instead. For instance, Other World Computing offers a lot of them. Although I don't know if it sells outside the U.S. it should give the OP some idea of what's available.

  • My disk drive is broken.

I bought the CS6 Design Standard, but my disk drive is broken. Is there a way I can download it with the serial number? There is no download option in "my orders" section.

    Hi,
I would recommend downloading and installing the trial version from this link : CS6 Design Standard Trial
After installing the trial, you will be able to convert it to a full version by using the serial number you have.
    Thanks

  • The disk drive in my ibook g3 is broken, is it possible to disable the drive so i can use an external superdrive instead?

the disk drive doesn't load up what ever is put into it and i am unable to fix it or replace it
when i plug in a superdrive into the usb port it won't work because the disk drive still takes precedence
is there any way to disable the drive so i can use my superdrive instead?
    thanks,

For removal or replacement you can see how to do it with an iFixIt manual. Go to the link nd pick your model then look up optical drive.

  • Installing Snow Leopard on Alu iMac with broken disk drive

The disk drive in my 24" alu iMac is crap and has never worked properly and now wont accept most disks and I've had Snow Leopard for ages but not been able to install it.
Would this work - I have an old Powerbook G4 1.5ghz with 1.25gb RAM and a fully working superdrive. Could I put the snow leopard disk in that and share the disk to my iMac connecting them with a firewire cable and install this way? (They both have 400 & 800)
    How would I do this?

  • Why doesn't my Macbook Pro disk drive work?

I used to have an old white MacBook and that disk drive didn't work as well as some other problems... the people in the Apple Store couldn't fix it and so gave me a free upgrade to a MacBook pro (great, right?!).
Everything on it works perfectly except for the fact... that the disk drive doesn't work, just like on my old one.
When I go to put a CD/DVD in (I've tried many incase it's the actual disk) nothing happens whatsoever. Nothing pulls the disk in, and there is no icon on my desktop/Finder to let me know it's recognised. If you push it all the way in it gets stuck and there is no way to eject it... It's as if there isn't a drive at all?
It doesn't make much sense because my MacBook Pro is brand new.
Taking it back to the shop causes a lot of hassle and usually when I get it back again, something else is broken.
    Maybe I'm just cursed...
Any advice on how to get it working? I've tried the trouble shooting, it doesn't help.
    Thanks!
    Jess

Hi, I have tried those things, bit nervous to try the Power Manager reset - apparently it can cause changes to your data?
I tried the SMC and no different.
I'm a bit anxious about bringing it in for service again, because with my old MacBook we had to go to London and back five times, and each time we collected it the people had fixed the initial problem, but broken something else in the process. I was without a computer for almost a month!!
Right now I'm in my final year of studies and need my computer constantly. Can't afford to survive without it whilst it's fixed.
Is there definitely no other option?

  • Z87-GD65 can't use 3TB disk drives on Intel SATA ports

I've been happily using my Z87-GD65 for several months now with a 256G SSD for Windows 8.1, and 4*2T spinning Seagate drives.  I decided it was time to make 'em bigger.  So I plugged in a 3TB Seagate ST3000DM001 on one of the Intel SATA ports.  The motherboard doesn't recognize there's a drive there at all.  If I go ahead and boot, it's very slow to come up and Windows does recognize the drive, but it's unusably slow and eventually just hangs.
Ok...  Flash the BIOS on the disk.  No better.
Flash the MB BIOS.  No better.
Plug in a WD 3T Red drive.  Same exact symptoms.
Try different Intel SATA ports.  Same symptoms.
Both drives work fine on two other completely different systems (both old LGA1155 systems).
Plug the drive in to the ASM1061 ports on the Z87-GD65 and poof...  works like a champ.  170MB/sec from the Seagate, 150MB/sec from the WD.
Well, that's something, but I had intended to replace the 4*2T drives with 4*3T drives.  Using the ASM ports is not the answer.
I checked the hard disk drive test report and it claims the ST3000DM001 was tried and works.  So I'm pretty stumped.  Old MB BIOS didn't work, new MB BIOS doesn't work, old Seagate firmware doesn't work, new Seagate firmware doesn't work, WD doesn't work, multiple ports don't work.
Surely other people are using large drives on these MB's.
    Hints?

It does help knowing other people are getting the same hardware to work.  Gives me hope.
My first thought was "ain't no way it's the OS" since the MB isn't showing the drives on the display of SATA devices.  But just to do a quick check I slipped in a Fedora drive and booted and wow...  no problems at all with using the 3T drives.  Motherboard still claims no knowledge of them, but Fedora uses 'em fine.
ok...  Update the Intel chipset drivers and the IRST and reboot and...  it's better.  Still broken, but better.  Takes about a minute to boot instead of the usual 12 seconds, but once it's up it's working ok best I can tell.  So it's getting hung up on something during boot.
Fine...  reset the CMOS, PITA though that is since I have to yank the SLI graphics card to get to it.
Put it back together, boot, and... Windows won't boot.
I'm about ready to throw a tantrum but get it together and just start trying things. Yank all the drives but the SSD.  No.  Boot from Fedora.  No.  Yank the second graphics card.  YES!  Put it back in again.  YES!  Guess I didn't get it seated right the first time, or something.  Sure felt ok going in, but I won't argue with results.
Boot W8.1 and...  bingo...  up in 11 seconds with 3*3T drives in it.  And the CMOS claims to see the drives now.
Stripe 'em in Windows software and CrystalMark says it can read 490MB/s and write 450MB/s.
    That'll do.  Thanks.

I downloaded the mountain lion from the app store and it downloaded. When i installed the mountain lion it said that the hd disk is broken and cannot be repaired, and the other disk doesnt have enough space! HELP and i cannot return to my desktop with the old sofware so i cant use my computer normaly

This error means that your hard drive is badly corrupt and cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. Since you say you don't have backups, this is very bad news. You may already have lost data irrevocably.
First order of business needs to be backing up whatever you can, but this may be difficult to do if the machine won't start up any more. See step 1 of the following post:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21614450#21614450
Once you have backed up your data, you can address the other issues.

  • Mac crash deleted various apps and broke the disk drive. How do I get my apps back?

My Mac 10.8.3 crashed a few months ago. It deleted various apps like garage band and iPhoto etc. During that time my mac also fell breaking the disk drive. I fixed the crash, but I have no clue how to reinstall these applications, especially with the disk drive being broken. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks!

you need to purchase an external hdd and insert the grey disk 2 whick origionally came with the mac new.  this disk contains the applications and apple hardware test.

  • Disk drive doesn't work

    i have a macbook and leopard 10.5.8.
I also have an old ibook g4.
i've rarely used my macbook dvd drive and now it seems it can't read anything. i know its not broken but could it be because the lens is dirty or something. if it is how can i clean it. i can hear the disk wirring and spinning. not even blank disks are working.
my old ibook g4 can read everything perfectly and has no problems at all. i play all my dvds on it.
how come my ibook g4 disk drive works better than my macbook disk drive? how can i make my macbook disk drive work?

Are these disks which have sticky labels on them? Is this a problem with all disks? Some disks are actually thicker than others as some have noticed. Also check this article:

  • CD Disk drive

My CD disk drive is not working.Does anyone had experienced the same problem.Does anyone know whether there is any service agents for Lenova, in New Jersey to get it repaired. Any comments on this regard will be appreciated
    Sebastian

This happened to me. After several days of trying to fix it myself, I called Lenovo support.  They ran through some diagnostics with me and concluded that the drive was dead.  This is considered a repair the customer can do so they sent me a replacement.  I am also in New Jersey and the replacement drive arrived the day after i called.  I swapped it out and returned the old one using return labels they provided.  No problems with the new one at all.  Very quick and easy.  I wished i called them sooner.
Just an FYI, they take a credit card number so that they can charge you if you never send the broken drive back to them.  as long as you send the drive back, the credit card is never charged.

  • Why is my disk drive scratching CDs?

For some reason my disk drive keeps leaving scratches on CDs, DVDs, etc. I am very careful in handling discs, and they always leave that disk drive with small scratches on them.

something inside the optical drive may be loose/slightly broken that is scratching it. If you have any part of your origional 1 year warranty or AppleCare left and live within 50 miles of an Apple retail store, Apple technicians will come to you.  If not, you should lug it in for diagnosis/repair.

  • Drive broken; how to erase

My Macbook is about 10 years old. What do I do to prepare it for selling or garbage? The disk drive is broken, so I can't reinstall the OS (10.5.8). It's still useable -- I'm typing from it right now -- so someone may want it cheap. Of course I want to get rid of all traces of me.

To be brutally honest a 10-year-old Mac is of little use to anyone unless they want to try taking it to bits and messing about with it - quite apart from any wonkiness. You might be able to get a small amount of money for it but it's probably not worth the effort. If you want to trash the disk for security reasons, just take a hammer to it.
I don't know what the rules are wherever you are but many countries don't like this sort of thing being put in the ordinary trash - there are sometimes recycling facilities or places to get it thrown away properly.
If you are going to put it in the trash, please take the battery out first and find a way of disposing of it safely. Lithium is nasty stuff and you don't want it going into landfill and possibly getting into the water table. Again, some countries have places which will take old batteries and dispose of them properly.
