Disk drive check on wake up--annoying noise

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had any clue on how to stop my Macbook from automatically checking whether I have a disk inserted in the disk drive every time it wakes up. It makes the same sound as when a disk is ejected. While not a huge problem, it has gotten quite annoying, especially when I'm trying to be quiet.
I know that an extreme solution is to remove the disk drive, but there must be another way. The new Macbook Pro's, for example, don't make any noise when waking up.
Alternatively, is my problem something that other Macbook owners also experience?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Jake

I second that opinion, older Pros (like mine) do it too!

  • Annoying Disk Drive Noise and "spongy keyboard"

I just purchased a new 17inch HP Envy Touchsmart with Windows 8.  There are 2 annoying issues that I have and just wanted to see if this is normal and I just have to live with it or if mine is somewhat defective.  First, at start up and shutdown the disk drive makes a distinctive somewhat grinding noise.  It just sounds bad and makes me think it's not well made.  I spent a lot on this and my older, cheaper laptops never did this.  Doesn't affect performance; just annoying.
Same with the keyboard.  The left side only is spongy in that the keyboard noticably drops when I press a key. Just makes me doubt the quality of the machine.  I am debating taking it back for an exchange, but wanted to see if this is standard with HP.  If so, I don't care for it.  Thank you.
P.S.  I have had this laptop for about 2 months and purchased it at a local Best Buy.
    Thanks.  Steve

My new ENVY 17 makes no HDD noise as you described. But the keyboard is horribly spongy, making it quite hard to know what keys I am pressing. Others in the same shop were a littel spongy, certainly enough to doubt the quality, but mine is 10 times as bad as the others on display in the shop. Unfortunately the shop is in a different country, and HP in the country I am in has no idea when they can get parts to repair the problem. Meanwhile, I have no computer.
So yes, your keyboard quality problem is "normal" for the HP 17, but some are much worse than others when new. Whether the "normal" problem with quality gets worse or not over a little time is a good question. If HP Tech Suppport could assure me this problem never gets worse, but just stays annoying, it would be reassuring. But they do not give me this reassurance.

  • Disk Drive acting up w/o a disk

My disk drive keeps making the weird clicking noise that happens when you eject disks, only there is no disc in my computer. It will make it over and over and over sometimes, going on for like 40 seconds.
The other annoying thing about it is that when it happens, my computer won't sleep. I shut the screen, and 10 seconds later the disc drive will make noise, then the apple on the back of the screen will light up and it won't go to sleep. Then when I go from class to class at school, when I shut my computer it keeps heating up and wasting a ton of battery from the disk drive waking it up so often.
This is the schools computer, not mine though. Someone cracked my screen so I sent it in, but I sent it in like three weeks ago, and the stupid tech worker I gave it to didn't send it in for like two weeks, and its taking forever.
Has this disc thing happened to anybody else? What should I do?
    Thanks in advanced!

  • Why does my mac wake up from sleep while it is closed when I plug in the charger and viceversa (plug or unplug)?? It is latest 13 Pro with disk drive 2012-2013

I dont know why it happens. I clos my mac, it goes to sleep and when it is already sleeping if i plug the charger then it wakes up, or at least the fans and the white led light near to the infrared thing turns on. And this also happens if it is sleeping with the charger plugged and whenever i want to quit the plug cause its already charged it turns on. All this happens with the lid (top cover) closed and only when it is sleeping and I unplug when it is pluged, or plug if it is not. I have some more Macbook pro olders 2010, and 2009-8 with 10.9.2, and this thing does not happen to them. Please if someone knows tell me??? If it is not clear is the Macbook Pro 13 with 3.0 usb, disk drive, the latest that apple announced with the disk drive, so i think it is late 2012 or 2013

There are two distinct sets of settings for Energy-Saver items -- one for Battery, one for Power Adapter.
When you plug in the adapter, it needs to wake up and change over to the other settings -- sort of like the hospital waking you up to be sure you get your sleeping pill.
The later versions of Power Management are more sophisticated than older versions, so they are more likely to do this "correctly" -- to wake up and change over.

  • Should i run disk utility check after a restore onto a brand new drive?

My hard drive died on my daughter's macbook, just replaced it and did a restore.
i am wondering if i should do any disk utility check(permissions or repair) on a new hard drive because i have restored a time machine backup onto it.
I say this because any issues on the backup files are now placed onto a new hard drive.

    Kappy wrote:
It can't hurt to repair permissions. Most likely you'll get a long stream of stuff most of which is irrelevant and can be ignored. If there are any repair issues this will fix them. Be sure to run DU from the system you just installed. No need to boot from an installer disc.
BTW, did you properly prep the drive? Partitioned GUID, Mac OS Extended, Journaled format, and one pass Zero Data?
I did partitiion the drive guid, os extended, journaled. but i dont remember a choice on the onepass zero data but i assume it happened with the partitioning.
i understand no need to boot from the disc for permission check but if i do a verify or repair of the disk, then dont i have to boot from the install disc?

  • Optical disk drive has started to make a lot of noise

My PowerBook was opened to inspect a speaker problem. Up until then, the optical disk drive was very silent; when you'd play a CD you could barely hear any noise from or in the drive -- virtually none (excluding the clicking when the disk is inserted and set). But since the time, it was opened, the optical disk drive has become very noisy. When a CD is playing, the drive makes a humming noise plus white noise that is pretty loud and even detracts from the music. The CD itself plays quite perfectly, though.
    The drive is a MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8122.
What may have happened and can it be fixed, and if so, how?

I think the optical drive may not be back in its place correctly, flush with the notebook. The irregularity/unevenness is causing the disc to either rub up against something, or the motors/mechanisms inside the optical drive are making noise due to the irregularity.
    I hope that made sense.

  • Disk Drive make noises.

I got a Mac Book Pro. Disk Drive makes noises . There is no Disk in Drive. But stll Noises..
What happen , what can i do.. ?

    Hi,
What happens when you pop a disk into the drive? Does it mount? You usually get this kind of noise on startup when there's something wrong with RAM, and the machine won't boot.

  • Macbook won't boot or start, constant disk drive noise

I purchased a Macbook Pro and been using it constantly for over 2 years now but never seen a problem like this.
I partitioned my HD to run Windows a while back but recently decided to remove it. I partitioned the HD back into its original state. While verifying the drive in Disk Utility, the drive said it had an error, don't remember what, but was able to repair it using the installation cd.
Soon after i thought everything was normal but my computer started to slow down and freeze, I had to manually turn off my Mac by holding now the power button. This went on for a bit and soon afterwards the computer wont start at all. I also heard a beeping noise when i turned on my mac but that was only once.
I dont hear a boot chime and the screen doesnt turn on. All i hear is the disk drive making its noise that it usually makes when you turn on the Mac but in this case it just keep making the noise.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this before? Any help would be great. My data has been backed up but i would rather that i didnt has to reset my Mac. I'm guess is that the HD might be failing, if thats the case then i got no choice.

Have you tried starting from the installation dvd? If it won't start from this it's likely to be a hardware problem.
You could also try starting in target disk mode by holding the t key until you see the screen with the target on. Even if you don't see the screen light up still try the following. If you have access to a second Mac and a firewire cable try connecting the 2 with the cable after the attempted target mode startup and see whether the hd shows on the second machine. If it does then you probably have a failure of the graphics processor. I was able to do this earlier this year when my screen didn't light up.
My next Q: Do you have the Applecare extended warranty? If you do then take it to your nearest authorised service centre for diagnosis.

  • Empty disk drive makes beep noise every 30 seconds

My disk drive makes a beep noise every 30 seconds. There is nothing in it. It sounds like it is looking for a disk or something, but the constant noise is irritating after awhile.

call the company that repaired it.  this is abnormal behavior and they need to correct it, especially since you state it was just replaced.

  • Stuck at Grey Screen, Disk Drive Making Crazy Noises

My wife was using the 12-inch Powerbook (which had always run fine), when she told me a box came up telling her she needed to restart the computer (in several languages). She did, thinking it seemed "official." When she went to restart, the apple logo came on, and then the screen went light grey with lines across the screen. I was afraid maybe it was some sort of virus she got, but Macs don't get those, right?
When I tried to restart with the install disc (even pushing the C button), nothing happened. The disk drive made all sorts of crazy sounds, and I was brought to the same box telling me to restart in a couple languages. I wasn't present when the problem happened initially, so I can't say what might have caused it. After reading other threads, I'm very worried about my HDD. Could a HDD crash have brought that restart screen?
Anything else I can try? Or am I looking at going to the Apple store with a possible hard drive crash?
    Thanks for the suggestions/advice.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
You're getting a kernel panic, which is usually, but not always, caused by a hardware problem. This FAQ may help: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
When the disk drive makes all sorts of crazy sounds, that's usually an indicator that it's dead. If it's 3-5 years old, that's where they start to fail.
If you have the original OS X disks that came with your system, you can run the Apple hardware test to see if it confirms a hard drive issue. Insert the disk that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the alt key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. Does that give you any messages?

  • How to disable CD-DRIVE checking, while using a Dolphin file manager

    Hello.
I  would like ask for a help. I have one problem that's quite annoying. It is related to checking cd-drive when using a dolphin file menager. It always cheecks it when Dolphin is launched from K or launcher on taskbar for the first time, again it happens when i close it and open again.
Is there a way to disable checking of cd-drive in Dolphin? This behaviour occurs on KDE with all linux system that i checked: Slackware, Arch, Kubuntu. Look at this:
Disabling CD-DRIVE checking, while using a file manager
I would like to disable it in order to speed up opening Dolphin, launching it.

Udisks2 is what dolphin uses to handle external drives of all kinds (USB, optical, etc).  Udisks is an automounting tool that allows normal users to mount disks.  The permission handling before was handled with consolekit and has now been replaced by systemd-logind (which is much better anyway).  So what I am suggesting is that it might be that dolphin is using udisks2 as the tool that polls for the existence of a disc in your optical drive.
Unfortunately, it is a bit more confusing than that because udisks2 is the replacement for the original udisks.  It is totally different and not compatible.  So I remember seeing a way to turn off optical drive polling, but I cannot remember if it was udisks or udisks2.  But it was done with a udev rule.
So I think if you tried to google for "udisks optical (or cd or dvd) polling" or something like that, you might be able to figure out how this is done.
Edit: unfortunately, I do not use dolphin or udisks2.  But I do have the original udisks installed.
Edit2: It seems that the method I remembered is for the original udisks.

  • Time Capsule Disk Drive Power Settings

I use my time capsule disk drive for storing various data eg photos music etc. The disk seems to go to "sleep" after a relatively short period of inactivity and to take quite a few seconds to wake back up again. Are there any user controls to manage theses settings?

    I have the same problem.
So far it was just annoying that I had to wait almost each time for accessing the TC but just minutes ago the TC became unresponsive completely through WLAN durin a spin up of the HD.
What I did was that I archived a new file to the mounted TC drive by drag and drop. Naturally I had to watch the spinning rainbow for 15 secs since the HD was down (to me the spin down interval is around 5 minutes which means apart from continuously doing something on it it becomes sleepy and non-responsive practically instantly).
After the copy finished (in 15 sec for one <1MBytes file) I went into a folder to browse its content. Here I got spinning rainbow again and then the wlan icon in the menu bar started to blink which is the way the TC wlan dies to me. It connects and disconnects in ca. 6 sec loops.
During all of this an internet radio was played on an other computer.
Making it short I'd like to have control on the disk spin down interval. Very much needed!
What I had in mind was to have a small program running continuously on each of my computers. This tool should put some bytes of data onto the TC in every minutes so that way keeping it alive.
Does anyone know such a tool or we might need to make one for ourself? Probably creating a scheduled special applescript?

  • Loud Annoying Noises

My Satellite L305 laptop is making very loud and annoying noises. It is not the fan or the disk drive. Theyre a gurgling noise and they have been louder and more frequent this past month. I've only had this computer for a year. Could someone please tell what the source of this noise is?

I had the sample problem. It happened when I used my monitor speakers too. I realized it was a software problem internet explorere problem in my case. I fixed my problem by installing Internet explorer 9.If you have windows 7 OS, Internet explorer 8 won't work properly. If you see beta stay away from that tooooooo!
    Hope that solves your problem.
    Cheers
