Disk Drive Irregularity
The disk drive on my iMac has been out of wack for about a year and a half now, it hasn't been more than a mild inconvenience as i had an external one but i've got to the point where i'm wandering why it isn't.
It can just about read CDs tho if i'm importing one with it each track has to be dragged one by one or it misses out a bunch, usually at the start of the CD, during witch it makes an abysmal racket most notably when it speeds up or slows down. It can't even recognize DVDs witch was the first problem for a while before the tetchyness with the CDs started.
We had a problem similar with an old Performa 5200 and it turned out something had to be tightened witch was easy enough, does it sound like anything along those lines or would itneed replacing to get any use out of it?

Optical disk drive has started to make a lot of noise
My PowerBook was opened to inspect a speaker problem. Up until then, the optical disk drive was very silent; when you'd play a CD you could barely hear any noise from or in the drive -- virtually none (excluding the clicking when the disk is inserted and set). But since the time, it was opened, the optical disk drive has become very noisy. When a CD is playing, the drive makes a humming noise plus white noise that is pretty loud and even detracts from the music. The CD itself plays quite perfectly, though.
The drive is a MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8122.
What may have happened and can it be fixed, and if so, how?I think the optical drive may not be back in its place correctly, flush with the notebook. The irregularity/unevenness is causing the disc to either rub up against something, or the motors/mechanisms inside the optical drive are making noise due to the irregularity.

Also data cannot be securely erased by overwriting the original file without special "Secure Erase" procedures built into the drive.[58]

High performance HDDs generally require between 12-18 watts; drives designed for notebook computers are typically 2 watts.I wish I could get my head round the SSD vs HDD with a NLE rig. My builder is trying to persuade me to use a Toshiba 256Gb THNSNC256GBSJ for OS and programs, and it is only NZ$20 more expensive than the 450Gb 10k rpm VelociRaptor I was originally planing to use for the OS. That sounds suspiciously cheap to me, and I am concerned about the finite writes to SSD - mainly because I don't really understand it.

300Gb 10k rpm Raptor (currently used for OS in old box)
150Gb 7k4 rpm Raptor (reserved for Photoshop Scratch in old box)
2 x 1Tb WD Blacks (data drives)
2 x 1Tb WD USB3 externals
I don't know how I would configure the drives in the new box, but have seen Harm's table and will try to follow his advice. It's a dreadful thing to admit, but I don't have a backup strategy, and the above drives are well over half full. Well over! And I am only just getting serious about video, (the rest is mainly CR2 files from my Canon 1Ds3 and 1D4)
I know it must be like banging your head against the wall, but should I avoid that SSD and go with the 450G Raptor? I have read a comment that the WD Blacks don't work well as Raid0. Is that BS or true?
I am about to give the go-ahead so need to confirm the spec. -

Just bought a Lenovo 3000 N200 without a hard disk drive, need software
I just bought a Lenovo 3000 N200 Type 0769-BLG assembly date 07/09 from e-bay, it looks brand new but it had a fault, it was dead, perhaps a faulty motherboard and the hard disk drive had been removed. Assuming I can get the fault fixed, where can I get the Lenovo software that came with the original hard disk drive, I would prefer a free source, if that is possible, perhaps some kind person has put all of the CD's on to a DVD that I can borrow or buy a copy of. I was an IBM employee for 30 years before retiring 15 years ago. Dan McLean in Scotland, UK.

Regarding the product Time Capsule... is the modem the same as the Airport extreme and is the disk drive always running??? I'm worried about it lasting at least five years.

I'd pay good money to bet it wouldn't last 5 years... I don't rate the in built power supply and as for "server grade hard disk" - Hmmmm..... The failure rate of all HD's on the market after 3 year is 60%.

this is my first time at the forum and i dont find a better way to ask, i want to copy my itunes library to an external hard disk drive for have a back up, but when i try to copy it it appears this message "the item "itunes music" has 1 or more items that are in use and cannot be modified", i dont know why, then i search for help in apple support and this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751, but i do what it says and i still having my problem, i can't copy my music, that message keep's appearing and it dont let me copy my music.
forget it i discover my problem, this message gives u 2 option stop or continue i just click continue and it get copied, i think this is normal but like this is my fisrt time i dot this i get confused, i think i still used to windows, i cant believe because i have a ear with this computer. well anything is a good experience.

I am unable to create a new folder on either of my auxillary disk drives. I can access the files and folders that were there when I transferred one of the drives from a PC. Time machine uses one for backup and I want to use the other to store photos which are large files. An help would be appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. If I reformat the drive will I be able to access the files on it from the MAC. I do not share the drive with a PC. The files were originally created on a PC which I no longer use. I do want to continue to access the files put there by the PC. I would like to not have to copy them over to the MAC hard drive just to use them. The second aux drive is new and works fine because it was formatted by the MAC. I can drag and drop files there and work with just as if they were on the internal drive.

Problem replacing a Mac Pro disk drive
Yesterday, I received a pair of 500GB SATA drives for my Mac Pro and one 1.5GB SATA drive. I installed the two 500GB drives in slots 3 and 4 in my Mac Pro yesterday to install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard and than clone it to the second 500GB drive. No problem there at all. I am booted onto one of those disk drives now.
Unfortunately, I am having a hard time installing the 1.5GB drive. I want to install it in slot 2, but for the life of me, I cannot get the sled's slider lock to unlock. It is on the orange color and it will not slide at all. Just for the heck of it, I tried sliding the locks on slots 3 and 4 where I put the other two drives yesterday and they are also stuck.
Why were the sliders working fine yesterday, but today they are stuck? How can I replace the drive in slot 2 now? I am stumped as to why this was fine yesterday, but not now. I didn't even touch slot 2 yesterday.
I want to install that 1.5GB drive to use it for Time Machine backups. I was going to try a pair of plyers, but I am concerned that I might do some damage.
Any advise on how to fix this perplexing problem will be appreciated.The door latch is what 'unlocks' the sleds.
Drive bay #1 can be difficult.
Sounds like it wasn't closed properly yesterday or you didn't pull the latch all the way out and up. -

Windows thinks my ipod is a disk drive?

Apple i-pod nano 1st generation
Issues:
...i-pod not listed in "My Computer"
...i-pod not connecting to i-tunes
...The "Do Not Disconnect" does appear on the i-pod's face screen.
...If the i-pod is connected via usb port to my computer prior to turning the computer on, then Windows will not boot up. I have to unplug the usb cable so that Windows will boot up.
...Same with i-tunes. The i-pod can not be connected to my computer prior to opening i-tunes or the program will not open. Once I unplug the usb cable, then i-tunes opens up immediately.
...Did verify that I have the latest version of i-tunes installed.
...In Device Manager, "USB Mass Storage Device" is listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers
...Right clicked on the above to update drivers...pop up window indicates the best drivers are already installed.
..."Appe Ipod USB Device" is listed under Disk Drives in the Device Manager
My computer is running Windows Vista.
My kids both have an i-pod touch and they sync / connect without any problem.
Could the problem be that my computer is confusing my i-pod for a disk drive? Or does anyone see what the problem may be based on the issues I have listed?
Any suggestions on how to fix this frustrating problem?

Marshathe ipod is suppose to be seen as a disk drive. if you don't like that, then in itunes uncheck "enable disk usage"
"ipod not listed in itunes" do have another computer you can plug this into? and the booting issue is a windows problem, it will do that for certain devices, i cant have my psp plugged is while it boots.

I would like to stotre several movies on an external disk drive connected to Airport express through USB port. With my IPAD, I am able to use the WiFi network (generated by Airport) buy I don't see the disk.... how to make it happen ? Thanks. JP A

I can't restore my Nano or force to Disk Drive mode

I have a 4 month old 2GB Nano that I cannot restore with IPOD updater nor can I force into Disk drive mode. It isn't recognized. Basically all the things I find on the help page. If I reset the IPOD (menu and select buttons) the nano will reset but it will not be recognized by Itunes or IPOD updater. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Welcome to Apple Discussions!
