Disk Drive Problems

Hey if any of you guys can help it'd be great!
The Disk Drive(SuperDrive(UJ-815) in my pb g4 17" 1Ghz(Aluminum) just completely stopped reading and writing anything. In the middle of a burn, it just stopped, ejected, and now it doesnt read or write CDs or DVDs of any kind. This has obviously become very frustrating. It will suck in the disc, make the usual reading noises, then spit it out. It doesnt flash any "cannot read disc" or "blank disc has been inserted" warning. It just takes, tries(makes those reading noises), and ejects. I heard something about UJ-815's being unable to burn 8x DVD Media, and I have already burned 3 or so DVD's at 8x. Does this damage my drive? Oh, I also cannot boot from disks at startup...:(
Cheers!

This drive will only write at 1x. It doesn't matter what write speed the discs are capable of.
Try the suggestions in this document. If nothing there works, it's probably time to replace the drive.

  • Solaris 8 Floppy Disk Drive Problem

Hi to all!, I need help with Solaris 8 10/00 Intel. Ive installed it and everything works fine, but I cant make the system to recognize the floppy disk drive, everytime I do a "volcheck", it just ignores it. Inside CDE happens the same thing, when I do check the floppy, nothing happens. Any clue?. Im using an AMD Athlon 700, with VIA KT133 chipset. Thank a lot!.

Try "ftp" + your email address. (but "anonymous" works, too).
Perhaps a typo or there was some other temporary problem with the
    web site.
The K7M boards have different bios release numbers, it seems the
first bios release had a revision number of 1007:
    ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/slota/k7m
Do you have to boot using the DCA floppy for some specific reason?
(for example to install using the >32GB ide-drive patch; network install
and no local cdrom drive; El-Torito CDROM boot does not work at all)?
Or do you have the system already installed by booting from CDROM,
and you just want to get usable floppy/serial/parallel ports under
solaris 8? In that case have a look at http://www.tools.de/solaris/via/. I've written a small driver that attaches to the VIA
    686A SouthBridge PCI/ISA device and it re-enables the Super-I/O
controller on that chip. The Super-I/O chip is disabled due to the
solaris ACPI bug and is the reason all these on-board devices do
not work under solaris 8. According to
http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Motherboard/SlotA/k7m/spec.html, the K7M uses the same SouthBridge chip, so my driver should work for
    this board, too.

  • IMac disk drive problem, iMac disk drive problem

Hi.  Don't have original software disks.  Anything I need to do before I bring in my iMac to the Genius Bar?   I haven't been able to backup via time machine since I've purchased this iMac a few years ago.   Any helpful insights or suggestions?

You will need an external disk drive that's freshly erased.
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
         5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Shutdown and reboot hangs usually are caused by applications or other processes that have crashed and are interfering with the shutdown process. Open Console in the Utilities folder to see if there are messages indicating what specifically is causing the problem.
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  See if any running process is listed in red or is otherwise shown as not responding.
Before you do a shutdown you could instead try quitting every open program you have run. If one or more refuse to quit then you know which is causing the problem.

  • Disk Drive problem

Ok my disk drive has been getting worse, first it would randomly eject disk just inserted the first or second try and finally take them the third. Now it seems some disk, especially DVD movies wont stay in at all. I have two questions, one has anyone seen this happen and two, how can I check how many more months or years of Apple Care I have left?

    Hi Richard --
To address the second part of your question first, you can check your AppleCare status by going to the Apple Support Home Page and entering your PowerBook's serial number in the space (a box) on the right-hand side, about three-quarters of the way down under the heading "About Your Support Coverage." Hit enter and your warranty / AppleCare info should appear.
(You can get your serial number by clicking on the Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Information (the System Profiler > Hardware will open) and the serial number will be shown.
Now, as for your first question, optical drive problems of the type you describe are often the result of either damaged or dirty media (CDs or DVDs) or dirt or debris getting inside the drive. To troubleshoot this situation further, you should try a number of different CD/DVD types, different brands, pre-recorded, self-recorded, etc., and see if you notice any difference. You might also consider getting a CD/DVD drive lens cleaner -- see the following related thread for more on lens cleaners: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=279212&tstart=0
    Good luck.

  • Win 7 install disk driver problem on Satellite L40-18E

Hi' to get to the point im trying to install windows 7 on a Satellite L40-18E and when i boot from cd it says i didnt safely remove storage device.
When i start up Vista as normal and try install from my computer it says i do not have the hard disk drives. am so confused please help:-)

    Hi again
sorry i wrote that message last night when i was tired and realise it its just a poor description of my problem to say the least.
Basicaly the laptop L40 i have bought is from a friend who copied all the stuff he wanted to keep to his new laptop and just gave me it with his programs and music on it. It has two partitions on it and windows vista os that i personaly think is a load of rubbish. All i realy want to do is set it back to factory setting and have one main partition instead of 2 small one's then load a fresh install of win 7 (no upgrade). It is a new windows 7 disk that fell of the shelf at work (cough) but is 100% never been used brand new. My computer know how is as good as my grammer (which is poor). i have changed bios to boot from dvd and pressed any key to boot it first load bar goes fine then second stops at 1/3 and a message about me not unplugging a storage device pops up and tells me i can go no further.
So i tried to boot it from the vista desk top in my computer went well at first then message poped up about correct hard disk drivers not installed from there the confussion started.
If u could dumb down or give me a description of were to find the info u need im more than happy to do it just not confident with pc's let alone vista

  • External hard disk drive problem with windows laptops?

my other hard disk drive cannot be read or write on windows and on my macbook pro 13.

If the HDD cannot be read on either machine, it may have failed.  Connect it to your MBP and open Disk Utility.  Is it recognized there?
    Ciao.

  • Disk Drive problems on MacBook

I'm having problems on the internal drive in a MacBook Pro - it appears to be getting "Read I/O Errors" according to the Console Messages log. I booted from another external USB drive that has OS X 10.5.4 on it and I tried to use Disk Utility to repair the internal drive but it fails in the ""checking catalog file" phase and gets either an "invalid node structure" or "invalid key length" error, so am guessing the catalog file has been corrupted due to a hard drive error.
So, I tried to use DiskWarrior and it also failed to rebuild the internal drive, but it was able to create a volume in "Preview" mode, which is a read-only version of what was able to be reconstructed ( guess). I am guessing that DW built a new version of the catalog file that did not contain any references to the bad spots on the disk, but not sure what it really did to get the read-only volume back to a state that it could mount this read-only volume and things could be backed up. Can anyone describe what DW really does in this kind of situation? I also noticed that the physical name of the device associated with this "rebuilt read-only volume" has a different value than the real drive (in this case real drive was referred to as /dev/disk0s2, but the DW volume was mounted as a /dev/disk4). How does the filesystem name get changed like this?
So, my main question is that knowing the blocks that had the "Read I/O errors" (the block numbers are in the Console logs), is there a way to tell in which file(s) the error actually occured? This would help me decide on what parts of the drive that DW was able to rebuild are missing or some other issue, and if it's some important system file, it would probably be better to install a new system and go thru "Software Update" rather than restore from the copy of the DW rebuilt read-only version that I made.
    Thanks...
    -Bob

"...This has got me back to 694 MB available on the HDD...."
You should try to have at least 15% free hard drive space. 694 MB is what percent of your total hard drive capacity?

    Hi, mac gart -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
If the internal battery in that machine is old, try replacing it. The Beige/Platinum G3's are known for having boot problems when that battery is too weak or dead.
Once the battery has been replaced, also reset the PRAM -

Are you able to boot the machine to an OS 9 Install CD?
Do you not have an OS installed on the internal hard drive? Note that the internal floppy drive and the internal hard drive are not the same thing.

  • Help NEEDED! External Hard Disk Drive Problem!

    Dear Forum,
I am using MacBook with snow leopard and I am also using a WD Ext.HDD 500GB. Ok, I will described in detailed regarding what problem has occurred so that you guys can help me:D. Firstly, I formatted my wd hdd to hfs+j as the default format is NTFS. Then afterwards, I forgotten that hfs+j cannot support windows, thus I partition it to 2, with one hfs+j and one Fat32(formatted to ntfs when in windows), then I realised that my macbook don't have enough space, thus, I reformatted the whole hdd to one partition only, hfs+j. Now, the problem comes, when I formatted it to hfs+j, I found the free space not right, at default, the wd is 499.41GB(as seen on disk utility), but when I look at the hfs+j partition, the free space is only 499.06GB(as seen on disk utility with no files in it). Another thing, when I looked into the disk utility info of my hfs+j partition, there is 400+MB of hard disk space already taken. Then, I transferred one of my files(4.82GB) into my ext.hard disk, when the transfer is complete, I 'get info' my ext.hdd and found out that 5.26GB are taken up, but I have only transferred 4.82GB of files. So what is happening to my hard disk? Any ways to fix this problem guys?
I really need your help! I will appreciate greatly if you guys can help me, thanks!:D
    Regards
    Ala.

The odd 400MB is the hidden files put there by the system to define the file structure of the partition, plus other stuff like .Trash. It's perfectly normal and the HDD wouldn't be recognised if they weren't there.
You will see a similar situation with the internal boot drive if you compare the Drive size (leftmost item with the manufacturers designation) and that of Macintosh HD (which is the working partition). In my case this shows 640.14 GB for the drive, 639.79 GB for Macintosh HD, a difference of 350MB
This will be the same within about ± 50MB whatever drive you format in HFS+J, including pen drives.

  • Compaq presario cq56 115dx will not power on blinking lights, not a disk drive problem

I own two identical Compaq Presario CQ56 115-DX, and the one I use every day stopped powering on.  Shows blinking caps lock light and orange WIFI light does not turn blue to turn on.  The fan powers on, but the screen doesn't come on at all.  I tried hard resetting several times and it didn't work.  I swapped the hard drive of the malfunctioning CQ56 to the other one that was working normally, and it works OK normally.  No hard disk corruption or problems.
Any idea how to fix this problem laptop?

    Hey @rajpodn ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're looking for info on swapping out the CPU in your notebook.
You will find everything you need here: Compaq Presario CQ56 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide. The instructions you need start on page 75. Keep in mind that the CPU itself may not be the issue, it could be the socket on the motherboard preventing the notebook from reading the CPU, so even replacing the CPU may not work, as you may need a replacement motherboard. I do not suggest replacing the motherboard as doing so requires HP Proprietary software to reinstall the Service-ID necessary for reinstalling Windows.
*Caution - If you do install the new CPU be careful with the thermal paste. A small pea sized amount should be more than enough. Put the paste in the exact center and carefully spread so there is a fine layer almost to the edge of the CPU. Remember that the heatsink will press very firmly onto the CPU and spread the paste more and you don't want any squishing out as this can cause electrical shorts if the paste has a high metal content.
The part you will want is: AMD V140 processor (2.3 GHz, 512-MB, L2 cache, 1066 MHz, 3.2 GT/s)—singlecore 25 W. The part number for this is: 616333-001.
You can order the CPU directly from HP here: HP Part Surfer, but you may be able to find it cheaper on sites like eBay, Amazon, or Newegg.
Hopefully this covers everything you're after!
Please click the "Kudos, Thumbs Up" at the bottom of this post if you want to say "Thanks" for helping!
Please click "Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

  • G4 12" Password & Disk Drive Problems

I am a real newbie. This is the first Laptop I have owned. I just purchased a G4 on E-bay.It has an administrator password which I was not given that is required for some functions not all. I got the system disks with the computer so I was going to go in and change the password as the manual described. However, the disc drive will not read anything and ejects the software as well as DVD's and CD's.
I've e-mailed the seller but have not heard back. I am 69 and will be confined to bed for a while. I got the computer mostly to check my E-mail and to go on-line which it does OK and I don't really have enough time to find another computer.
My questions are, I have a iMac G5 OS 10.4.11, is there anyway that I could connect it to the laptop in order to up-grade software by downloading it on the laptop and is there anyway for me to change the password.
ChadP gave the following instructions in another thread. I am kind of fearful that if I don't do it right that I might mess things up to the point that I wouldn't be able to use the computer at all. Is that possible? Any advice would be very much appreciated.
    Warm Regards, Carol
    1. Boot into single user mode (command-S during startup)
    2. Once the command line prompt appears, type the following (each followed by return)--note the spaces:
    mount -uw /
    cd /private/var/db/netinfo
    mv local.nidb local.old
    rm ../.AppleSetupDone
    exit
When you hit RETURN after typing exit, Mac OS X will restart and the setup assistant will launch automatically.
This will create a new administrative account with your newly selected password. You can then go in a delete the previous user account in Preferences-Accounts. Make sure you check if there's anything you need in the previous users account.
This will get you rolling again without a CD/DVD.

If you have a Firewire cable, you could link the two computers and use the G5's disc drive to get the iBook's password reset, or to do an Erase and install of the OS.
    To do this:
    1) Insert the iBook's Install disc 1 into the G5.
    2) Shut down the G5 & the iBook
    3) Connect the computers using a Firewire cable
    4) Boot the G5 while holding down the T key.
    5) Start up the iBook while holding down the option key.
You should see the G5's hard drive as well as the Install disc show up as boot options. Choose the install disc, and then you can follow the instructions for resetting the password.
If you don't have anything valuable on the machine, you could also go ahead and do an Erase and Install.

  • Hard disk drive problem

Everything on my computer saves to  image backup (C and it only has 40GB. Whenever I install or update anything else it says "Insufficient space, please free up additional space" so how do I save stuff to Windows (D which has 891 GB instead of image backup (C

    xl wrote:
    Hmm....
If you are installing an application.  It's better to save to C: for stability.  A lot of software is not tested for any other drive letter.
By default, a lot of documents or data goes to the "My Documents" folder.  It's best to save your data to another drive letter instead of C: or use the "My Documents" folder.  Also moving your data/documents to another drive letter makes backups easier.
regularly clean your browser temp files.  This might help free up some space.
You might want a third drive letter for temporary files or swap space.  This will keep your C: from fragmenting.
You need something that can resize your partition.  40GB C: drives is awfully small.  Can anyone recommend a good piece of software that can resize partitions?
What version of Windows are you using?
I install everything to D, both on my personal hardware and the servers I manage. Never have any issues doing it that way, and it comes in handy when either your C: drive fills up or you need to do an OS reinstall. That Steam Library can get pretty darn big.
Gparted bootable CD will do it, I can't think of any free windows utilities that will.

  • Problem replacing a Mac Pro disk drive

Yesterday, I received a pair of 500GB SATA drives for my Mac Pro and one 1.5GB SATA drive. I installed the two 500GB drives in slots 3 and 4 in my Mac Pro yesterday to install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard and than clone it to the second 500GB drive. No problem there at all. I am booted onto one of those disk drives now.
Unfortunately, I am having a hard time installing the 1.5GB drive. I want to install it in slot 2, but for the life of me, I cannot get the sled's slider lock to unlock. It is on the orange color and it will not slide at all. Just for the heck of it, I tried sliding the locks on slots 3 and 4 where I put the other two drives yesterday and they are also stuck.
Why were the sliders working fine yesterday, but today they are stuck? How can I replace the drive in slot 2 now? I am stumped as to why this was fine yesterday, but not now. I didn't even touch slot 2 yesterday.
I want to install that 1.5GB drive to use it for Time Machine backups. I was going to try a pair of plyers, but I am concerned that I might do some damage.
Any advise on how to fix this perplexing problem will be appreciated.

The door latch is what 'unlocks' the sleds.
Drive bay #1 can be difficult.
Sounds like it wasn't closed properly yesterday or you didn't pull the latch all the way out and up.
