Disk drive spits out all disks!

My drive won't accept any kind of disk anymore, it just spits them out after a few seconds. This happened over night. Maybe some dirt got in through the slot or something? Is there anything I can do besides getting an external drive of some sort?

Have you tried resetting the pmu? It is kind of a catch all, resets the powerbook and hardware to default settings? Check out apple's support page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

  • IBook G4 1GHz -- combo drive spitting out all CDs/DVDs since 10.4.5

My 12 inch iBook G4 1GHz has been spitting out any CD/DVD inserted (both blank as well as non-blank ones) for the last few hours.
Also, my system crashed at least 4 times today. And when I restart, it starts off with noisy fan sound and just stops without booting.
When I press the power button again, it makes the same sound that iBook makes when it is forcefully shutdown. Now, when I press the power button again, it boots normally.

    Hi Kranthi,
You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #88275 on Troubleshooting the slot load disc drive (Portables).

  • Super Drive spits out un-recorded DVD´s

The Super Drive ( MatshitaDVD-R UJ-816 ) on my 15" PB G4 for som reason keeps spitting out un-recorded DVD´s of the following type, which according to its specifications it is compatible with:
    -R, -RW
    -R, -RW
It will however accept recorded DVD´s. Anyone know why or what can be done about this?

I have the computer and drive.
    and also the same problem...
    Can anyone help????

  • Drive spitting out CD's seconds after insertion

My drive will not accept any form of CD. I haven't spilled liquid on it or anything. What's wrong? How can I fix this?

Scott, I have learned repeatedly what you have explained here: That these optical Super Drives are not robust. I am on my THIRD Super Drive in the less than three years I've owned my MacBook. Thank goodness I bought the extended warranty and got the drive replaced twice without charge. I forgot the circumstances of the first failure in Spring 2009, but the second failure was only last week after I tried to use Disc Utility to erase a CD-RW. I choose the longer, more thorough erase process, but when it was taking more than two hours, I stopped the procedure before it completed itself. After that, the drive would work only intermittently, spitting out most CD-ROMS and burning CDs only occasionally. I finally just went to the Genius Bar for a new one. (These guys are so busy these days that it took 3 days to install one they had in stock!)

  • MATS.DVD-R UJ-825 Spits out all Disks!

The only advice I have found on here tells us to clean the
lens, but if it spits everything out, how could that work?
I've seen patches on other non-apple sites, but am hesitant
to try it. What's going on with my drive? I am full to the gills
and need to burn dvd's to get it lightened up.

    Try the following.
    Goto: HD/Users/your name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist
Drag the plist to the trash.
    Reboot computer
    Repair Disk Permissions
Insert a DVD or CD (A new plist will be created.)

  • Combo drive spits out disks! Ptoooey!

I too am having an issue with my drive. No CD or DVD will mount. It does not matter if it is a blank disk, music or data CD. I will put in a disk (many different brands/speeds tested) and the Mac thinks for a few seconds, then just spits it out. I have read through a bunch of the threads here dealing with the same or similar problems. I am starting to think that one of those updates I downloaded from Apple screwed something up. This was not happening before the last updates were released...
I did not see a fix for this in any of the threads.
Hey, Apple! There's obviously a problem with the eMac. How about fixing it?! >:(

I don't have any kids, and I don't stick anything in my superdrive except discs, but I have the exact same problem. Just got an American Gangster DVD from Netflix, and the macbook sounds like it's trying to read it 3 times, then ejects it. This happens with lots of different discs I get. I called Apple support, and they had me press a combination of keys, reboot, etc. That's a lot harder than playing the disc on my girlfriend's Windows laptop, which plays any disc I put into it -- even if it looks like someone placed it on concrete and then danced on top of it. Apple superdrive, you are junk. Why did I pay so much for this thing when a Windows laptop is $600?

  • Why does my dvd drive spit out disk

I'm trying to burn a video  and when I insert a blank dvd-r it sounds like it's reading it and then spits it out.

    Hi s,
Mac SuperDrives are very picky about what they'll eat. Try a different brand of DVD. I've never had a coaster or a problem with gold colored Maxells. You can also try cleaning the drive.
You could purchase a CD/DVD drive cleaning kit, or you can try with materials you may already have on hand. Use a credit card, or something similar, and wrap it with an LCD cleaning cloth type product (basically a thin micro-fiber type cloth). Gently slide the "cleaner" in and out a few times in the left side of the optical drive opening. Make sure you can hold onto the cloth so it doesn't get stuck inside the drive. This cleans the lens, which may be all you need.

  • Disk Drive spits out disks

I've had my iMac for about 2 years now and yesterday when I tried to stick a burned DVD in, it wouldn't go in. First it felt like something was stopping it, then when I tried again, it took it but spit it out again. I even tried feeling around with a stiff piece of paper but could feel nothing inside. I've even tried other disks to see if it was just having a problem with burned DVD's. It just won't accept anything. Any ideas?

  • MY MBP SPITS OUT ALL CD'S AND DVD'S!!! CAN ANYONE OFFER A SUGGESTION?

i purchased my mbp about a year and a half ago have had a few issues with the battery along the way but nothing too dramatic.
my issue now is that, when i put a CD or DVD into the disk drive, i can hear it 'trying' to read it, then after a few goes, it spits it out!
its beginning to annoy me and i would like to put my spice girls greatest hits cd onto my ipod.
    can anyone relate????
    haha
but seriously, what is going on?

    Hi
A couple of years ago I considered upgrading the optical drive in my previous iBook. I was quoted 250 GBP (about $500) - a completely unreasonable price - by an authorised Apple repairer. Instead I bought a LaCie FireWire external for around 150 GBP ($300). I'm glad I did, because when the optical on my new MacBook failed I was able to use the LaCie in its place until I could get it fixed.
Alternatively, you could try replacing it yourself, see http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/
Or try a non-Apple repairer to see if you get a cheaper quote.

  • Why is my drive spitting out discs

I have a macbook Pro late 2011, when i insert a disc it will accept it, make a bit of a noise, and spit it out about 20 seconds later. Im 100% sure there is no disc still in there, is my drive dead? or can the issue be resolved?
    Thankyou

The drive may dead, but it may just have a dirty reader lense. Does it do it with all discs or just this one?
You can get a CD/DVD cleaning disc almost anywhere that sells electronics, Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, online, etc... They are cheap and if it all discs try this.
If it still persists, being to a Apple store Genius (make an appointment first) and they will diagnose it for free.
The bright side is if it is dead, it not an expensive fix.

  • Drive spits out disc

I've had a Macbook Pro for a couple of years now, but after not using the disc drive for several months it is now giving me a problem.  When I insert the disc it spins for a few seconds and then spits it back out.  I've tried for a few days but cannot get anything (games, DVDs, etc) to run anymore.  What's the best way to diagnose this? I don't want to have to bring it into Apple, really the cheapest solution is the best one.  Thanks

The drive has either failed or is dirty. You could try a CD/DVD head cleaning disc but I'll bet the drive has failed.
You don't have to replace it. All you need is any brand external DVD drive that connects by USB port and it will work with your Mac. It does not have to have the Apple name on it for it to work. Most sell for around $30.

  • Combo drive spits out media

I recently upgraded to 10.4 and then to 10.4.2 on my 12" pb. obviously, my combo drive was working then. all of a sudden i put cds in to it and it accepts them, keeps them in for a couple of seconds, and then spits them out. it did the same thing with the tiger upgrade dvd. any suggestions? any ideas?
    thanks,

Combo drives can not burn DVDs.

  • Macbook pro dvd drive spits out fresh blank dvd

I have a macbook pro with Lion installed
I am trying to write a DVD, but everytime i put a blank DVD it spits it out after 15 seconds or so, doesn't even recognizes as a blank dvd.
This is the details of my dvd drive
    MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-868:
      Firmware Revision:          KB19
      Interconnect:          ATAPI
Burn Support:          Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
      Cache:          2048 KB
      Reads DVD:          Yes
      CD-Write:          -R, -RW
      DVD-Write:          -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
      Write Strategies:          CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media:          To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

A fine lense cloth (for cleaning eye glasses) wrapped around a flat piece of credit card shaped plastic gently inserted and brushed once to the left side seemed to capture plenty of dust from my late 2008 MacBook Pro's Superdrive. Now DVDs work again and stay in the drive.
Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

  • IMac drive spits out Apple Install discs...

All of a sudden, out of the blue, my iMac won't accept my Apple install discs, or my iLife '06 discs. It will accept some other discs, like Office 2004, but won't touch the Apple install or ilife discs.
I tried the same discs on my mini, and they all work. I spoke with an apple tech, and have tried various things, like resetting nvram and pram, without any luck.
I'm now going to try to boot in safe mode, an startup manager and try. If that doesn't work, I'm just going to request a new drive.
Anyone else ever have this happen?
    Bryan

    Hi Bryan,
I'm afraid I don't know which brands of drive cleaning discs are available in your part of the world. I've used various 'dry" cleaning discs over the years though without any problems. Most have a little "brush" on one section of the disc.
I'd look for a good quality product that specifically says that it is Mac compatible , if possible, though as many can even be used in audio or "stand alone" DVD situations, this shouldn;t be all that critical.
Be wary of any "wet" cleaning systems , or ones which look as if they may have problems with a slot loading drive though.
Its not a bad idea to run one of these every now and then BEFORE problems arise. You can get to a situation where the drive becomes so dirty that it can't even read the necessary info on the cleaning disc itself. I run one every three months, just to be on the safe side.
    Cheers

  • DVD/CD-RW drive spits out DVDs that previously worked

Hi there, I've got a G3 iBook with its original DVD/CD-RW drive. A few weeks ago the computer stopped recognizing DVDs. It doesn't give me an error message or a warning about region codes or anything -- the DVD Player application doesn't even pop open like it used to. It just spins around, makes a skittering noise and then ejects the disc. This happens even for DVDs that previously worked just fine. I tried using a commercial lens cleaner and no dice. Standard CDs still read perfectly, though I've noticed that it occasionally has trouble reading burned CDs (this may be a separate issue).
    Any ideas?

This was mistakenly posted in the incorrect area of the forum. I have re-posted in the proper G3 section.
