Disk drive won't eject

This morning I can't eject the drive to simply insert a disk. When going to the File tab in the Finder EJECT is grayed out and the computer isn't responding to the button. I've already shut down and restarted once but that didn't help any and there's no indication that there's a disk stuck in there either. Any ideas?
I've hardly used the CD/DVD drive here at work since most of my files are obtained via memory sticks, ftp sites and the company network. Not sure if that has anything to do with my problem but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to include it.

If you have a wired mouse try holding down the mouse button while powering on.
Another trick is to launch iTunes, make a one song play list and tell itunes to burn the disk. At that point iTunes will spit out the disk and ask for a new one. Just hit cancel at that point and hopefully the disk will be out.

What can I do to eject a disk, that won't eject. from my iBook G4?

If it is trying to eject and won't it may be that the slot opening
is blocked by the protective cover. Mine was torn and after a couple of attempts
to repair it I ended up removing it.

I am also having a similar issue. I used Adobe Lightroom and my whole display goes black. Even my laptop screen and the lights on the keyboard go black. I can still hear the fan running, so I assume it is just the display. This is my first Mac and I have had nothing but issues. I think I am going back to Windows after this.

  • Problems re-installing PSE10 using disks. Disk drive will not eject. [was: Question]

A virus fried my PC and I am re-installing Photoshop Elements 10.  When prompted to install Disk 2 the disk drive will not eject.  I have to uninstall Disk 1 before it will eject.

There is no question in your posting.

  • Disk drive continues to eject digital dvd copy.

I recently puchased blu-ray with digital copy combo.  I tried to load digital copy to redeem but disk drive continues to eject digital dvd without reading it and no dialogue box.  How do I fix to redeem movie?

If disk drive rejects ONLY that disk, then you have a compatibility issue with that disk or that generation of disks. What about other optical disks, CDs or DVDs? Do they behave OK? If a superdrive, test recording a CD or DVD using a rw disk. If all is OK, the answer is simple: that very disk is not compatible with that generation of optical drives.
that generation of optical drives cannot—for sure—run blu-ray disks.

  • Optical drive won't eject and can't power off from Apple menu!

I have a Quicksilver that has almost always acted great but ever since I physically moved the machine to another room I've been having intermittent problems. Here's a quick summary:
    -Overall more sluggish performance
-Occasionally the optical drive won't eject and I have to restart the whole machine. (I did replace the drive a couple years ago but have never had any problems until now).
-I can no longer shut down/restart from the apple menu, i have to push the power button in.
I used to get device removal error messages at inappropriate times but that seems to have stopped since I reseated my USB 2.0 card. Here's a list of the other remedies I have tried:
    -Repair permissions
-Make sure all cards/RAM seated properly
-Replaced PRAM battery (year was displaying 1970)
    -Ran DiskWarrior
    -Re-imaged entire boot drive
I can't remember if I've tried zapping the PRAM because this problem has been going on for about five months. None of this was an issue before I carted the machine into another room so hopefully I haven't dislodged anything. Also, I notice a lot of static build-up in the room despite the hardwood flooring. Perhaps that could be an issue and if so, any suggestions?
I was dreading that it could be my logic board, any advice?
    thanks,
    Jesse

Well....it may be fine for you to accept an inferior item, not I. I paid for a unit that was supposed to be fully operational and work as designed. I will not accept having to reboot every time I want to put a CD or DVD into my computer! That's like having to restart your car so the headlights work. Even if one doesn't drive at night, you would still expect the headlights to work ANYTIME you want them without the extra steps. I know "where" the issue is and I know "why" the issue is BUT unfortunately, there is not a fix I can find. Between uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and applications and etc. I give up. They will replace my unit according to Lenovo, with a brand new laptop. Should this one have the same issue, I will be disputing my CC charge, and sending the unit back to them for a full and complete refund. I wish I had a copy of WIn8 or Win7 without Lenovo's proprietary software embedded. I bet the unit would work as designed then, but to have them rewrite or add software with hooks directly into the core system is a recipe for disaster. I encourage you to do something about yours also. The more people that ALLOW this "type" manufactured fleecing, the more it will occur.
I guess I will find out just how well this replacement process works.

  • Flash Drive Won't Eject as a Whole

My Computer (Windows 8) won't let me eject my flash drive in one piece.  It works fine on the other computers (Windows 7 & XP) in my house.  When I click "Safely Remove Hardware", three buttons appear:
Cruzer Micro [faded & not clickable]
    >  - Eject Removable Disk (F:)
    >  - Eject Removable Disk (G:)
When I eject both clickable links, the light on my flash drive doesn't turn off, but the "Safely Remove Hardware" link shows:
    ... [faded & not clickable]
Any way of fixing this?  Thanks.

  • External Hard drive won't eject.

hi, im new to the boards. just having an issue with my new external hard drive. everytime i use it or i use my cf card reader which is firewire it won't eject either. i've read there are special commands to go in and see what applications are running and i've tried using disk utility to eject the harddrive. nothing seems to work. ive got all my photos from jobs on this harddrive and im worried that by pulling the cord or switching off the device is eventually going to render all my data corrupt or potentially erase it all. if you know step by step instructions to putting commands in to eject these things it would be of great help. im on 10.3.9 ibook g4.
the error is basically telling me the drive is still in use and can nnot eject. not sure why because there are no other apps running?

Well i think i figured out what was causing the issue. i had a jpeg in the trash. i tried to delete it but it states an error message that the jpeg is being used in another application. so i pulled it out of the trash then plugged my external harddrive back in and the tested it to see if it would eject properly and it did! so now i just need to figure out how to delete that jpeg? so the fact that this jpeg is somehow tied up in an application was causing my card reader and external harddrive to not eject properly? strange. thanks for the tip though. appreciate your input.

  • The disk drive won't spit the cd out of the drive? What do i do?

I was watching a movie and ejected the movie and it wouldn't come out. It sounds like tries then it dies. It does this for about four to five times; and it does this everytime i open or turn on my computer. What can i do, if there is anything i can do without buying aa new disk drive.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Have you closed the app you were using to watch the DVD?
If so, hold down the trackpad (or hold its left button) while your MacBook is starting. This will force the SuperDrive to eject the DVD.
If it doesn't work, hold Command and S keys while your Mac is starting to start up in single-user mode, and type:
    drutil eject && exit
There are other methods, but they won't work if these ones didn't do the trick. In this case, take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get your disc drive replaced, or get an external DVD drive

  • Application disk image won't eject off the desktop?

    Hi,
Lately I've been having this problem with either Firefox or Safari and I download something and the dmg extracts and I'm left with the white casing shell where the app is housed and it won't eject. I can't eject it from finder but dumping it to the trash from finder took it off the sidebar. I can't get them off my desktop unless I restart my Mac.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I'm using Leopard 10.5.2.

Thanks to DeltaMac I figured out all the problems I was having with my Finder. I was missing a lot of options under my Finder tab like Empty Trash, Preferences, Quit etc. Also I had no option to right click and eject disk images or external hard drives.
All you have to do is download Onyx here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070
Then open up Onyx and go to OnyX/Parameters/Finder
put a check in the box next to Show Preferences item, Show Empty Trash, Show Quit item, and Show Eject item and whatever else you want. You have to do them each individually though and wait for the prompt. Then item log out and back in again and everything should be back to normal.

  • I purhased an apple usb cd/dvd and I have a cd disk that won't eject even after going into controls and selecting disk eject any ideas how I can take of the issue?

I have a cd disk stuck in my USB super drive, it won't eject even after going to control and selecting eject disk

    Hi BCservant,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know that it can be concerning when you cannot eject a disk from your external drive. There are a few troubleshooting steps that I would recommend to help you get this situation resolved. Please use the attached article for troubleshooting information.
Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support
Doesn't eject discs or discs eject slowly
If the drive ejects discs slowly or appears to be struggling, insert and eject a single disc several times. Check the disc to see if it has a label or other material stuck to the disc that increases the thickness. Remove the label if possible.
If the disc will not eject, try pressing the eject key on the keyboard. Some older keyboards may use the F12 key to eject discs.
If the disc will not eject, try dragging the disc icon to the trash.
If the disc will still not eject, try holding down the trackpad or mouse button after restarting the computer. The Superdrive should attempt to eject the disc.
If the disc continues not to eject, reset the System Management Controller (SMC) and try steps 1-4 again.
If the disc still does not eject, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store for additional assistance.
    Best regards,
    Joe

  • My disk drive won't accept disks at all, not even a little to spit them out.

My disk drive will not accept disks at all...there is no disk stuck in there, but nothing happens when I try to insert a disk into my disk drive.
The disk won't even go in the drive a little bit...it's like something is blocking the drive, but I know nothing is in there.
Any ideas on what this may be or what to do to correct it?

It sounds like the lens on your optical drive is dirty. Use a cleaning DVD or wrap a microfiber cloth around a credit card and carefully slide it in and out a few times.

  • My external drive won't eject.  should I shut down my computer? It says if I force eject, I might lose info stored!

My exernal drive will not eject.  Should I shut down my computer?  It says if I force eject I might lose info!

Hey I typically have this problem as well. For starters what steps have you went to to eject the drive? Have you just done it from finder or have you gone to the Disk Utility and tried to eject from there as well? If not then I would recommend this first. I would also recommend before doing anything to save any neccessary information that was placed on the drive locally if possible.

  • Disk Drive won't open: Root Cause

I've seen several posts here and elsewhere on why the DVD/CD drive won't open/eject on the Mac Pro or Macbook. Pressing the keyboard button doesn't eject it, and neither do any terminal commands. After banging my head against a wall I found the cause: VMWare Fusion had "mounted" the DVD-drive so the Mac thought the drive was terminally "busy". If you have Parallels, the same may be happening to you as well.
P.S. I suspect a similar thing may be happening with my external hard drive, which I have set up as my Time Machine drive. I periodically get a message that Time Machine encountered an error but no details. The drive may be hijacked by VMWare when Time Machine tries to access it...

VMware can grab USB devices too. It's a good idea to make sure your VM's aren't set to attach the cd/dvd drive automatically when they start.
