Disk drive wont spin

Hey all,
I have got a prob.
I have a dvd with 4.6 gigs of avi movies on it. When i try to drag all or any of the files off the dvd(in finder) onto the desktop, the drive spools up like it usually does and the progress meter starts going up. It usually gets quickly to about 50-80 percent and the drive stops spinning and the meter stops. Then I get a messege
"Finder could not complete the operation because some data in "filename" could not be read or written (Error code -36)"
The wierd thing is if I drag any of the files individually , it does the same with all off them. When the drive is spinning it copies no prob but all of the sudden it just stops and so does the copying. Sometimes the drive never spools up and the progress stays at zero followed by the error messege.
Another thing is when I play the movies right off the disc. Same thing. If the drive spools up it will play a good 5 minutes off the movie then the drive stops spinning and movie freezes. And sometimes when I open the movie off the disc the drive never spools up and it plays about 10 seconds of the movie the freezes.
Not sure what is happening here...
Any help would be excellent
Mac Mini 1.42GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It really sounds like the DVD is damaged in some way.
I do have a suggestion, but I'm not sure it'll work : insert the DVD and let it mount on your Desktop. Then, open Disk Utility (in Applications > Utilities), and select (highlight) the disc in the left panel. In File > New, you should see three options :
Blank Disk Image
Disk Image from Folder
and
Disk Image from your disc. You want to select that option, and then you can choose the name, location, and format for the disk image. I think you can leave "Compressed" and for encryption, "None". Now, click Save.
Once it's done (if it succeeds), you could try to mount that disk image (double-click the .dmg which you will find where you saved the image), and see if you can transfer the files from there.
Please let us know if it works (or doesn't).

Hi, whenever I insert a disk into my disk drive on my macbook pro it spits it right back out. It doesn't matter if its a DVD or CD. Could this be a driver problem? I dont think anything is physically wrong.

  • Important to know if disk drive is spinning.

I'm transferring information between labview and programs that are not
able to communicate directly with labview. Data is passed back and
forth by one program writing to disk and the other reading it. This is
inelegant, but not much data has to be transferred; nor does this happen
    very often.
I would like to ensure that a disk write from one program is complete
before I have the other program start a read on the newly-written data.
Does Labview have any way of checking if the hard drive is currently
being written to? I guess I could put in a conservative time delay, but
perhaps there's a way to safely shave down a window of safety
    dead-time...
    Using:
    LV 5.1
    Windows98
    PII PC.
    Any general advice on how
to ensure that don't trip over myself in
reading a file that is written by one machine and then read by another?
    Thanks.

LabVIEW's "Open File" function in the File I/O -> Advanced File
Functions palette has a parameter to deny other applications read and
write access as long as the file reference is open. I don't know what
languages you are using to write your other applications, so I can't
say whether they have the same option to deny reading by another app.
Another way that you can set up your reader is by reading the size of
the file. When the file size stops increasing over a certain period of
time, then you can make a logical assumption that the other program has
    stopped writing.

  • Urgent Help Needed - Frozen  disk drive & mouse

This is quite a complicated situation, but i will put it simply:
I woke my mac from its sleep, and went to connect to the internet(wanadoo broadband. It wouldnt do it and went from saying 'connecting....connecting...'on the finder bar in the right hand corner(next to where the time is)and said 'disconnecting...' over and over. This usually last a few seconds but 5 minutes later it was still doing it, so i went to restart the mac.
When it was restarting, it went to the login page, and it never does this, so i went to use the mouse to click on it, but it wouldnt move from the top left corner of the screen. So, i used the keyboard to select it and logged in. Once it had got into the finder the mouse still wouldnt move. The time kept coming on and then disappearing again over and over.
I have tried opening Norton Disk doctor but i can select any options because the mouse wont work and a live update comes up before it opens and i cant select the option of not to use it. I have tried several things, i restarted using the on/of button and no change, i have unplugged all the usb devices but nothing has changed. The disk drive wont open either when i click on the eject key. So i cant reboot from a disc because
    1)disk drive wont open
2)I cant click on the apple in the top left corner to go to the restart option and then hold down any keys.
The only reason i am on the net is cos i have used my flat mates pc to hook up on the net so i can get some advice, the apple helpline wont help me as i no longer have apple care plan, and i dont want to go out and travel to a different city to get hold of a new mouse, if it isnt the initial problem.
I really need help because i have work to do and deadlines to meet and even though i have the work backed up on an external hardrive, i cant access it because what i am using is a pc and my work is formatted for a mac. I also didnt get round to backing up all my music from itunes, so i really hope it doesnt come to formatting my hardrive because i dont want to lose all my files.
Can anyone help me please? Im desperate

    StreeX,
If you have time, search the Discussions for "Disk Doctor Kervorkian". Symantec Systemworks / Norton Disk Doctor is widely and consistintly blamed for making things worse, sometimes irrepairablly so. (So be grateful you couldn't select it.)
You wisely unplugged other USB peripherals, but did you try unplugging and re-pluging the keyboard and mouse? Also try disconnecting your Ethernet (and phone line if any). The only peripherals should be the keyboard and mouse.
Does the mouse's red LED light up when the computer is on? Try both with the mouse plugged into the keyboard and with the mouse plugged directly into the Mac.
You can force the optical tray to open by holding down the mouse button while starting up. It's also possible to carefully (and gently!) pry the drawer and then the tray open with a fingernail of X-acto type knife blade.
You can force the Mac to restart unconditionally holding down command-control-eject (see Magical Macintosh Key Sequences)
Can you get the Mac to start up in Safe Mode?
With the optical tray open you can try booting from youe OS X Install disc to run Repair Disk to check for errors. An alternative is to boot to single-user mode and run the file system check utility. Refer to Using Disk Utility and fsck.

If you go to Disk Utility, can you see the drive on the left hand side? If not, then the drive is dead. You'll have to buy a new drive.

  • Leopard wont seem to install with a external disk drive

my internal disk drive on my macbook G4 is bust so i bought an external disk drive.  i tried to install leopard but it wont recognise it so it wont install some help please

    Hi
I'm trying to install Leopard from an external DVD drive with a Firewire cable: I can boot from the DVD via the "option key" but the Mac stays frozen on the grey screen (with the Apple), while the loading flower doesn't appear.
Is this normal, and how long that screen will be displayed?

  • MacBook Pro 17"... JUST REPAIRED VIA APPLE STORE ...CD/DVD Drive wont mount disks

Macbook Pro (17") wouldn't boot to desktop/homescreen, so I went to Apple.
They sent me to Micro Center for data recovery.  Success.
After that, back to Apple then they sent me to Best Buy for new Hard Drive.  Success.
Back to Apple.  Everything working ok except that my Adobe Creative Suite programs no longer work.
So I try to reinstall via data CD, as I did when I originally installed the programs, but now my CD/DVD drive wont mount ANY disks!
It accepts them, makes some odd noises, then spits back out.  Please help!

I'm confused, why did Apple 'send' you to 2 non Apple places for repairs? Did you buy the product from Best Buy? It doesn't seem like Apple made any repairs, so you'll have to get either Micro Center or Best Buy to repair the issue for you.
How long ago were these repairs?

  • CD/DVD drive wont take disk...NEW PROBLEM

I went through all the discussion boards looking for someone who had the same problem as me and no one did! Two days ago my CD/DVD drive was working fine, then yesterday I went to insert a DVD and it would take. It goes all the way in, thats right ALL THE WAY in, so I know nothing is in the drive or obstructing it. I can push the disk all the way but the drive wont take it in and read it. I have to keep poking it with my finger to bounce the disk out. It is as if the "grabbing" mechanism is completely broken or something. I have tried re-booting but nothing seems to change it. Please help.

This issue may require some qualified technician to replace the optical
drive; depending on the usage and age of the computer, the unit may
be wearing out or some part in there has failed. And depending on the
age and use pattern of the computer, the hard disk drive may also be
getting weak. {Sometimes, for a little more than the cost of one service
    replacement, a second can be performed at the same time.}
If the problem is just some foreign object which somehow got into
    the drive, perhaps a good service tech could look inside & see it;
maybe even remove some obstruction, if one exists in there.
Otherwise, the options are probably limited due to the way the drives
are compact and generally the computer would need to be opened
up to get into them. Some independent service techs and small
companies who know Apple products can do a good service and be
able to restore functions. Some may be able to give you a fair price
because they have access to the parts and are knowledgeable, too.
The iBook series takes some effort and skill to get into them and do
repairs, and not cause other damages as a result of this effort. My
suggestion would be to inquire locally, if at all available or likely, for
someone qualified; then inquire farther away. I had a good service
from wegenermedia.com on my older iBook at a good price; and
sent it across the continent via the US Post Office. A flat-rate box
with bubble-wrap & other padding may be adequate...
Estimates are subject to inspection in many cases, and at times,
a part may be prohibitively expensive if the tech or company is
    not one who does this work often. wegenermedia is a specialist;
there probably are a few others who do portable Apple repairs in
out-of-warranty computers, to factory qualified specification.
Good luck in this matter, & happy computing!

  • Mac OSX wont reognise my internal hard disk drive

I have a problem where for some reason when I start up my Macbook Pro (intel core duo) it does not detect the internal hard disk drive at all. I have run a hardware test and it shows no problems whatsoever. I have tried resetting the PRAM etc and to no avail. Yesterday the system hung and I tried to force quit and it wouldn't do anything so eventually I held down the power key and when it tried to reboot this is the problem I was faced with (it would boot up with the "no entry" sign). I accepted complete defeat and went to completely re-install OSX however it doesn't even show the internal hard drive when I wait for it to give me install destinations. I had tried seeing the hard drive through disk utility however it only shows the install DVD and that's it in the sidebar. I resigned myself further to thinking either the logic board or the HDD had packed in all and I took it round to my brother in law to see if there is anything he could do without opening the machine (he is Oxford educated and writes programmes etc so is very knowledgable), now this is the part that has miffed us both, he started it up using a Linux disc and once running, Linux see's the hard drive with no problems. He has been able to access the HDD with absolutely no problems under Linux both reading and writing to it. I even took my Mac Mini round and he booted them both up in Linux and completely copied Mac OSX from the mini to the macbook pro but still when I try booting up its as if the HDD isn't even there. Why can Linux see the drive and not Mac OSX? Please don't be affraid to get very technical in your answers as they may mean nothing to me but will probably all make sense to my brother in Law. Any sugestions at all would be greatly accepted.

    Dear mcdkev,
You guys may have made a big error cloning the Mini HD into the MBP. They both have very different drivers and hardware settings and their OS X versions are customized to fit the hardware. That is why each mac comes with it's own version of OS X and their backup disks. That's a reason why it did not work.
Ok, so now that you do not have any of the original info on the MBP try the following:
Use linux to scan the disk surface & repair any problems.
Reformat the drive as DOS or FAT 32. (I wouldn't go into any linux specific format unless you can "Apple" format it, which I don't think linux has that option.)
Now, the MBP should be able to see it's drive...
boot from the OS X DVD , from the Utilities menu choose Disk Utilities, partition the drive as GUI file system (in case the linux format made the drive a "system boot record", you do not want that... )
Then format the drive as "OS X Extended Journaled"
Now go back to install and install your original basic set of OS X (the factory default).
*If nothing works, please do take your MBP to the Apple store or to a certified tech before you do more damage to the drive and it becomes unusable ...*

  • Computer wont recognize ipod in disk drive J!?

I recently recieved my Ipod Nano for my birthday, and everything was going as planned until I came back from vacation 2 weeks ago and tried to put more songs on my Ipod.
Once I put my ipod in the connecter which I had been using for the past 3 months, Itunes never came up so I clicked on it and my Ipod was not listed on the lefthand side.
I went to the apple websited and completed all of the 5 R's and still nothing.
I also went under "My Computer" and saw that disk drive J(the ipod drive) was said to be empty, but yet my ipod was plugged in and the screen on my ipod was blinking and said do not disconnect, like normal.
I checked the back of the connecter and the computer and i made sure everything was in tight, but still it claimed drive J, my ipod drive, was empty. Meanwhile all my songs were deleted somehow. I'm not sure how to fix this because I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything and yet nothing has helped!! Someone please help me out, i need my Ipod to work!! Thanks alot!

To eject the CD, try restarting the computer and when you hear the chime hold the mouse button (track pad) down.
