Disk error after upgrading to Mavericks

Mountain Lion was runnning slowly on my Macbook Pro and so I decided to upgrade to Mavericks and then follow the defrag instructions here:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4032
Everything seems to work fine after completing the instructions, except that when I try and repair/verify the HD (both in Disk Utility and Onyx), I get this message:
"Error: Live file system repair is not supported"
Onyx tells me to boot holding down command + R and then verify/repair the disk when booted from OSX Recovery, which I did and it said the disk was verified. However when I boot back from the HD and go back into Disk Utility, I get the same error. I also tried verifying/repairing the HD when booted from the Carbon Copy I'd created (from the above defrag instructions), and again it says that the HD is fine.
So the problem seems to be that when booted from the HD, the HD isn't able to verify itself, even though when booted from another startup volume it seems to be fine. Mavericks seems to be running smoothly in general so I'm not too concerned, but obviously it is a bit concerning that I can't verify the volume (especially in case future problems arise), and so it would be good to fix this issue.

I can second that a bad HDD can check out with a good SMART status and be verified OK with Disk Utility and still be bad.  My MacBook Pro is under 1yr old and it started acting iffy (long wake up times, random shut downs) but the SMART Status checked out and DU verified it OK, what tipped me off was Apple Hardware Test (restart + "D") wouldn't complete and just freeze, even after letting it run for 24+ hrs.  I then ran a 3rd party system maintenance program called Techtools Pro 7 and everything checked out OK but the HDD surface scan which checks for bad blocks.  It projected it would take 28 hrs to finish and after just 3 hrs it had located over 1500 bad blocks.  I cut the test short and took it to Apple and the guy ran a HDD check and within a few minutes a big RED banner popped up saying FAILED.  My warrantee runs out in two days so I just saved $160 by ignoring Disk Utility.  OP maybe run a 3rd party disk program and see if the drive is ok physically.

  • Service battery error after upgrading to Mavericks

Immediately after upgrading to Mavericks my Mid 2009 MacBook Pro that was purchased in September of 2013 received a service battery error.  The laptop will continue to charge while plugged in, but loses battery power at an alarming rate when unplugged.  Has Apple addressed this problem yet, and when can we expect a solution or repair for this?

  • ITunes store error after upgrading to Mavericks

I am constantly getting the message "We could not complete your iTunes store request. An unknown error occurred. (12002)". This happened after I upgraded to Mavericks. This happens every time I click on the Movies or Music tabs.

I am having this issue since 2 days ago too.
Something is wrong with the "Music", "Movies", "App Store" Tabs.
What I did was to use the links at the bottom of the page under the categories "Explore".

  • Hard Drive error after upgrade to Mavericks

Trying to upgrade my girlfriends MacBook to Mavericks from Lion.
After starting the installer an "Install Failed" message came up saying there was an error with the Hard Drive and it couldn't be repaired. It said to backup all data, whipe the hard drive and try agian.
Thankfully the hard drive was already backed up, but I can't whipe the hard drive. When i go into disk utility and click erase it gives me an error saying the disk can't be unmounted. All this happens while running the Mavericks installer. It also happens in the Lion recovery software.
I should mention there is a boot camp partition running Windows 7, however I am no longer able to access that either.
So to summarize, I can't run Lion or Windows 7, I can't install Mavericks or reinstall Lion, and I can't re-format the hard drive and start again.
Theory i had was using target disk mode and attempting to erase the drive that way, but I'm not sure how i would go about reinstalling Lion or Mavericks if i did that.
Any suggestions would be grealty appreciated! Thanks!

  • Imac disk error after upgrade to 10.5.7

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help out, i've having some problems ever since i upgraded to the 10.5.7
Firstly background on my mac, prior to the upgrade i was at 10.5.4, and before this i have had a few kernel panic crashes and managed to fix them, with by erase and install via my time machine with no problems.
i've decided to upgrade my mac to 10.5.7 and during the process of when i had to restart the computer after the upgrade the imac crashed, i restarted the comp manually and it got stuck on the grey screen, so i reboot on safe boot and then log back in to normal boot and it was all fine again.
But then straight after when i restart my computer the kernel panic happened again.
Now the problem is, i have erased my mac and in hope of installing leopard again and back it all up with my time machine. however everytime i tried installing i get an error saying that 'disk may be damaged', i have tried about 5 times already, i've done Apple Hardware Test as well and nothing was detected. Have run disk utility repair verify and nothing was picked up.
All of my hardware are straight from apple so i dont have any 3rd party hardwares that may cause the problems i believe.
If anyone could give me any other suggestions or help that'll be great thanks

After a little additional research I've found the following...
Upon opening a Terminal Window and entering /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail I'm provided with: cannot execute binary file
Might this imply the upgrade to 10.5.7 corrupted the Mail.app executable? if yes, how do I revert to a previous version? Will TimeMachine help in this?

I already try that , my largest resolution on the 30 inc is 2560 by1440.Not working.I mixed up , I actually upgrated from 10.6.8. When I boot from a 10.6.8 partition , I have no problem. But I realize that my 20 display can have 1680 by 1050 max and my 30 2560 by 1600 max. Then if I boot from 10.9 partition I am having the probem with the black strip and my 20 can max at 2560 by1600 and my 30 can max at 2560 by 1440 with the bars. I realize too that I do not have a menu bar on the 20 display, only on my 30. And when I do a safe mode boot 10.9 , the 2 bars are gone and I have a full 30 display. That workstation is a MacPro 2008 with ati HD 4870 512 k . I checked I did not found any updrate for the video cards.
On my other workstion that I upgrated from Montain Lion to 10.9 which it the latest 27 inc IMac with a second 30 inc Apple display  I have no probem , no black bars and and I have a menu bar on both displays.By the way , before I bought the new Imac , I was working with the macpro with same video card and I had the two 30 inc display , running 10.6.8 with no problem.
I have another problem too that I post on the wifi section. Since upgrade to 10.9 on the macpro , the one with the bars , I lost my wifi icon on the menu bar. i went to Network pane and I do no see a wifi section, only ethernet, firewire, and bluetooth and I try to add another choice the dialog do not let me choose from a wifi. I owne a airport extreme 4 gen and when i open airport utility the airport ext is discovered but no wireless.
I work with pictures, with Lightroom 5 which I instal on the Imac 27, no problem. But I am waiting to install anything on the macpro in case I have to reinstall again 10.9 or if a 10.9.1 update could fix the problem.
Anybody with these two problem, the bars and the missing wifi

  • Losing disk space after upgrade of Mavericks

The download and installation was successful. However, after restarting and before upgrading all free iWork apps including iTunes and iPhoto. I noticed that after recovering about 10gb of disk space, it started reducing it again.  I continued with the upgrade of the said apps, but after leaving my mbp for a few hours it started losing disk space again. this time its agresssive, i've lost around 40gb overnight, without using any apps or activating any updates.  Please help!

It sounds like Time Machine is turned ON and the computer is making backups to the hard disk.  This space is freed automatically, if required by the OS.

  • After upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

  • Random restarts after upgrading to mavericks and then yosemite

I have a mid 2009 15in mbp. I noticed after upgrading to mavericks that I began to have random restarts and significant hang ups to the point of me having to restart it on my own. I would run disk utility and repair permissions. The mac would run okay for maybe a day or maybe an hour, then restart or hang up. I seem to have a pretty full hard drive and I for some reason thought it may be a failing hard drive. I purchased a new hard drive and restored a time machine backup to the new 1tb drive. I also added 2, 4gb sticks of ram. Things were going swimmingly for a week or so with yosemite installed and then the problems began again. It got to the point that the computer wouldn't even start. I threw my old hard drive back in, reformatted it, and reinstalled a back up. The mac is working now, but with the same kind of random kernel panics. I have done all of the latest software updates as well. I would like to put the other drive back in for shear volume alone, but don't seem to get anywhere when I try. Thank you for your time and consideration. Any help is appreciated. Here is an etrecheck as well.

  • System becoming un-responsive after upgrade to Maverick

After upgrading to Maverick I am experiencing massive performace problems to the point of the system not being usable.
    System: 2010 iMac
Upgraded Yesterday morning, Upgrade process went smooth, no issues at first. First symptoms of problems were hick-ups in video playback, jerks in window switching. From then on over several hours the system became slower and slower to the point of being unusable. Performed system reboot, which took 45min, followed by fast degradation and unusability.
Attempted revovery actions with help from Apple support (thanks, even though the problem remains so far):
Booted system via the network into recovery mode, performed disk check: SMART status OK,  verified and repaired disk no issues deteced, verified partition, no issues detected, data volume looks correct.
    Attempted normal boot-up, unsucceful
Performed powerdown, followed by opt+cntr+R+P boot, no success
Performed safe boot (shift), system came back up after 1.5 hours, extremely unresponsive, but at least it is up. I am scared to try to shut it down.
Diagnosis attempts: Other than time-outs, no unusual errors in console, file hirachy and files look Ok from terminal, access very slow. Can't see any obviously problematic processes in Activity Monitor, RAM usage about 2.5GBytes out of 12GBytes total, largest is kernel with 700MB, CPU not loaded, no high disk or network io. Evything looks to me like a pefectly normal system that runs at 1/100th or so speed.
Maverick managed to perform a time machine back-up over night and all earlier back-up are gone. So no chance to restore back to Mountain Lion that way.
Anybody with similar problems, any ideas for next steps?
    Thanks

  • My macbook pro is running really slow after upgrade to Mavericks

my macbook pro is running really slow after upgrading to Mavericks....any ideas?

OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
The above link is not very useful, so if it doesn't help read on.
There are many potential reasons that a Mac may be running slower than expected, but more information is required to begin troubleshooting, much more.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you before proceeding. It is premature to conclude your hard disk is failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • Windows Fails to Load After Upgrade to Mavericks

    Related topic:

I'm a little late to this party, but hoping to find some help. I can see my WindowsXP Pro partition on the desktop, but after upgrading to Mavericks it won't fully start up. I'll get the usual screens, then the XP loading screen with the blue loading animation. After about 5 passes of the blue thing, it will hesitate and flash a blue screen so fast, that it took me several attempts to snap a photo so I could read it. "Unmountable_Boot_Volume" is the error. It then says to follow these steps... but cuts off and reboots.
One thing of note is that Parallels 10 uses the same XP virtual machine and boots just fine, so I figure XP can't be all that messed up. Maybe a driver issue, not sure. Does Mavericks not support XP? I'm open to Windows 7, but I'd like to backup some stuff first if possible. Maybe I can do that through Parallels?

  • After upgrading to Maverick my apple wireless keyboard battery drain too quickly (30% in 1 day)

Just as the topic's tittle, after upgrading to Maverick, along with many small errors, keyboard battery draining is by far the most not-so-pleasuring thing to deal with. My keyboard used to consume roughly a few battery percent per week. After the OS upgrade, still with the same using habit, it went from 80% down to 60% the last week, and from 60% to 30% just yesterday. Does anyone else here get this and any solution please? Much appreciate it! Thank you!

Software bugs are killing not only IT industry (just look the drop in PC sales, and also a new sharp drop in tablet sales!), but industry in general.
The reason for this is very simple: wrong people are on wrong jobs. As simple as that.
To introduce this kind of bug, the drain of keyboard battery after installing an "advanced" version 100 (or so) operating system, and have this kind of bug a Jimmy from 3rd grade would not had made, is beyond comprehension.
I trace these kind of stupidities for at least 30 years. While Microsoft can be forgiven as they started it all with a poorly conceived operating system foundation by a few teenegers and later it was impossible to go back to square one, the Apple on the other hand had all things available to them beautifully: the most advanced, architecturally, operating system foundation - Unix. And they failed too. They put an awkward GUI lipstick on that beautiful Unix operating system, with a lot, a LOT of bugs!?
Again: the reason for all of this is that throughout the decades and decades, the wrong people were put on the wrong jobs. Nowadays VERY small percentage of educated people work on software systems development. There are no computer scientists, computer engineers, electrical engineers, software engineers anymore working for those companies like Apple. Throughout the decades of mis-management they had been replaced by all sorts of inadequate occupations: sociologists, psychologists, English majors, shoe salesmen, even Preachers .
And the result we see: a never ending stream of stupidities like this one. If chimpanzees had spent all this time, all these intangible and tanglible investments, on creating operating systems I assure you they would do a MUCH better job than these dilletants

  • Late 2007 15" MBP Very slow after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi guys,
this is my first post here. I look forward to learn and help others.
The reason of this post is, as outlined in the title, slow paerformance of my computer after upgrading to Mavericks. It was kinda slow from before but this time it's almost unbearable to use it. I used to be able to run VMWare with 2 XP and 1 windows server machines WITH JUST 2 GB OF RAM! Now I have 4 GB and can barely run a single virtual machine with XP and the cooling fans come on just by watching a video on youtube, which also makes performance take a dump.

I understand it says my RAM is way too low, but hve no idea what's killing it. So far I've disabled and uninstalled all DynDNS items. I just read about Chrome's slow performance for MBP's and plan to switch back to Safari (Firefox made my computer even slower).
Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.
    Oscar.

Thank you Kappy, while I was reviewing the log from EtreCheck I noticed the 3rd party preference panes, launchers and daemos. I deleted a few of them and it really helped with system performance. I was reading about GeekBench in the discusions and decided to give it a go, although I was able to only perform the 32-bit tests, I got 1268 on the single-core score and 2187 for the multi-core score; I don't know how good or bad those numbers are. Wish I had a before and after reading but I read about it too late, when I had already erased several items.
I will appreciate any further input BEFORE I decide to reinstall the OS from scratch.
