Disk Error - Press any key to restart
I tried to install Windows on my iMac. From reviewing the forums now I see I made a mistake in not choosing the format properly. The machine came up with the message above. After 2 hours I got the Windows install disk to eject and tried everything to get the unit to reboot but the same message keeps coming up. I Finally put in my 10.5.4 disk to try to get it to boot from that but to no avail. I have tried everything but keep getting the same message. It will not boot into Mac mode and now won't give me my Mac disk back.
Any ideas.

What you want to do is press and hold down the option (alt) key on your keyboard as soon as you turn your iMac on until it gives you a screen where you can choose which OS to choose from. It should give you the options to choose your Mac partition, your failed Windows/Bootcamp partition and any discs in the drive.
As for knowing how to fix the problem with installing Windows, I'm at a loss because I've had the same problem for months now.
Choose the Mac partition and once your mac boots up, open Bootcamp Assistant and have the Bootcamp partition you created earlier removed. Then maybe try installing Windows all over again.
For my own curiosity, how did you get your version of Windows? And which version is it? And is it an OEM?

Last month I just got a HP netbook (HP Mini 110-3100) and when I got it from the box, the error message; "No bootable device -- insert a boot disk and press any key" appeared. But then I managed to boot up the netbook normally. After that, I can use the netbook normally but the error message keeps appeared and becomes more frequent and now I even cannot turn on the netbook.
Is it a hard disk failure?
p/s: yesterday accidentally I can turn on the netbook without any problems. Did a lot of Hard Disk Maintenance by some softwares downloaded from the internet. But now already cannot turn on.
p/s/s: i have no cd/dvd drive, and also no 8GB usb drive.
p/s/s/s: what should i bring if i want to send the netbook to the HP centre? just bring the netbook?I would suggest try and reseat the hard drive and check...If you still have the issue, than take it to the service center...And you will need to take only netbook to Service center...

We have a Mac Mini with both Mac OSX and Windows 7 installed on the Bootcamp partition. It's all been working fine since we installed them a few weeks ago, and we've been able to use both areas without any problems.
However, we just tried to load the Windows partition and it came up with the error message: "No Bootable Device -- Insert Boot Disk and Press Any Key". Does anybody know why this is happening as it is the first time this message has come up in a few months, and my dad is seriously ****** off right now because he has work to do on the Windows area. :/
Also, someone told me that I had to install Windows again. If this is the case, will all of the files on it be safe? If not, that's not an option.

How to fix bootcamp error: No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key
Hi everybody,
It seems that I triggered a bootcamp "bug" that involve the malfunction of the partition hierarchy after the creation of a new partition.
After some work I managed to get back again bootcamp in bootable partitions choice window, but if i select it and reboot the system
i get this error:
No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key
I think something is wrong with the assignment of the bootable partition, maybe is looking for windows in the wrong partition.
Any idea?

I have an iMac, upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks when it was available. Yesterday the Mac did not detect a USB stick, selected restart, after restart "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key.
Tried holding down the option key on reboot, but no success, wireless keyboard does not seem to be responding.

Managed to get the Mac to see the keyboard. My Mac is up and running now.
Holding down the "Option" key worked and I was able to select the drive to boot off.

ok i get this error when hooking my dvd drive up and tring to use my windows 7 cdNo Bootable device. Insert boot disk and press any key. i have tried to use command key i see the cd icon and hit that and i get the error

Well I am truly staggered, I have tried this on two different MacBook Pros, with three different external USB optical drives. Don't know if you googled as I suggested but you would find hundreds of others who have found same thing. The exception is MacBook Air which works with the Apple writer, but I don't know much about this.
Were you doing any of the special workarounds with refedit etc?

Problems with Bootcamp Assistant: no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

I got a problem setting up Windows 7 on my recently bought 13" MacBook Pro (2,3Ghz Core i5).
I used the bootcamp assistent to create a partition of 50GB on my Mac, everything is fine until now. I insert the Windows 7 disk and follow the instructions. But when I restart in spite of starting the installation of Windows 7, a black screen appears with a note saying "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". To exit this screen I then have to restart my Computer again, holding down the alt-key. In the following window I can just chose my Mac-Harddrive to boot from, the partition is not shown.
I used the software actualization tool to update to version 10.6.7 which is the most recent one i think.
The Windows 7 CD I use is actually a burned one. My University is a member of the msdn academic alliance and therefore offers me to download microsoft software for my work. I stress out that this is absolutly legal, I will only be allowed to use the software unitl I finished my studyings.
So as I said, I downloaded the Version of Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 (x64) on my computer and then burned on a DVD. I want to add, that the file I downloaded turned out to be an iso file. At first, I just burned this file on a DVD but since it turned out that i got the above mentioned message, I burned a second DVD with the actual files of the iso (with foldernames like autorun.inf, boot, bootmgr, bootmgr.efi, efi, setup.exe, sources support, and upgrade)
I dont know if these details are of any relevance, but i guess it may be useful since I believe that the burning thing could cause the problems.
I have already browsed the Forum for quite some time now, but I didnt find a case with the exact same problem that I have, so I decided to rather ask you for help now instead of killing my brain like I did before (and I dont really have a clue neither of Macbooks nor of Windows-Computers, its always try and error for me)
I hope somebody can come up with some helpful ideas or a solution.

Apple Disk Utility won't do a proper job and won't work (and it varies, some can start the install but fails later) Has to be burned at 2X Reduced Burn Speed

I am trying to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp but after setting up Bootcamp and restarting the computer I get the error message "No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key".
I use an iMac with a DIY Fusion Drive consisting of a 120 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD.
Since Bootcamp can only be installed on the HDD I believe disk1 is the interesting one. Here is the output of sudo gpt -r -vv show disk1:

I have gdisk installed and am ready to mess around. Any help would be greatly appreciated!So, when I started my iMac yesterday morning it couldn't boot into OS X anymore either. Several hours of restoring later I am back to square one. I tried installing Windows 7 via Bootcamp again but got the same error message. This time I noticed though that Bootcamp asked me to remove the bootable option from the USB drive with the support drivers in order to install from DVD. Does that ring any bells? I am building another USB drive right now, hoping it would ask me again but this I will decline and try to boot from it.
When you restored, was a Time Machine restore used? TM does not backup Bootcamp and does an erase of the partition. It may also erase the entire disk (including the Fusion drive) if the specific backup of the volume layout of the disks indicates a pre-Bootcamp layout.
My MacBook Pro is a 2009 model and also once had a built-in optical drive. I have no idea why it would work on there but not on the iMac.

The blinking dash indicates that it is working, but does not have the requisite drivers to enable the GPU/Mouse/Keyboard on the media being used.
In the MBP case, did you have two drives installed in the MBP, a Fusion configuration, and then were able to successfully install Bootcamp?
For example on a Mac mini I have a DIY Fusion drive, but the sequence was done differently. Bootcamp was installed using a USB stick+Windows 7 ISO.
1. The two disks are not in a CoreStorage set up initially.
2. The second disk is partitioned (64Gb) and a Bootcamp W7 install completed via USB (this is different HW as compared to IMac, because it has no Optical drive).
3. After the HDD is partitioned, the first partition and the SSD are then used to create a CoreStorage volume.
4. Here is the working version and disk layout. (I plan to erase both disks, put W7 on a partition on the SSD, and make the non-Bootcamp+entire HDD in a CoreStorage volume).

I've seen a lot of discussions about "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" but the answers in them don't seem to help me at all.
from the begining...
i was tryin to instal windows 7 on my 2014 iMac and after bootcamp prepared the iso on a flash drive, the computer restarted in the windows instalation screen and i chose the "BOOTCAMP" partition.
After thi i got an error with a mesage that the partition wans not in ntfs, and a question if i wanted to format it. As i am recent to OSX but i was a windows user for quite a while i thought, ok there should be no problem about letting windows format this BOOTCAMP partition so i went ahead and did it. after this i stopped the process because at the moment i seem to recal that in the mac osx bootcamp help there was something about making sure to installing windows to the BOOTCAMP partition. So i canceled the process and restarted the iMac.
Now i get the "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" message over and over.
I've tryed restarting with alt, alt+cmd+p+r, alt+r, etc and allways get the same message.
Just before tryin to install windows on a secondary partition had the iMac backup to an external drive on my airport express via time machine.
Questions.
are there any other ways to boot into OSX again, or after letting windows format the BOOTCAMP partition all is lost?
If everything is lost, how do i boot to restore my time machine backup from the external drive?

Thanks in advanceSorry about that I just realized that Boot Camp may have decompressed your ISO, We can't really do much because Boot Camp may have told the mac to boot from the flash drive, but now your mac is most likely not being told to boot from it. (You where able to boot from the drive before so I would keep it all intact) Is your keyboard wireless (because it can cause your mac to not to register keys being pushed at the Macs start) which this may be preventing you from getting into recovery mode (Command-R) or the OS choosing screen (Option).

So I tried all yesterday to get bootcamp to work, and this is what happens. I get through all the steps of bootcamp with my USB, and when it restarts, it comes up with an error on a black screen: "No bootable device - Please insert boot disk and press any key". I checked that I have all the support files downloaded, but it just doesn't work. How can I fix this so that it recognizes my USB? I found this thread, but when I follow the first command that the answer does in the terminal, it doesn't work. Does anyone know the solution to get my computer to recognize my USB? Or be able to fix that command in the thread I linked? I'm on a Macbook Pro 2011 running 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, trying to install Windows 7 64-bit with a USB drive. Please HELP!
Since your MacBook Pro shipped with an Optickal Drive, Boot Camp it looking to that optical drive for the Windows bootable install media. My guess is that you "hacked" your configuration to get the USB installation options as they weren't there on teh stock Mountain Lion install on a Late 2011 MBP.
In the many threads about people who have done what you seem to be trying you will see thant some claim that just putting a disc in the optical drive will allow them to continue the installation from the USB stick. That might work for you, or it might not. If not, just use the Optical drive for your installation. -
How to repair "No bootable device insert disk and press any key" problem?
I was browsing sites using Google Chrome when all of a sudden, my laptop completely turned off. I turned the power back on only to find the error message "Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)" appear in white letters, followed by a bunch of other error messages, ending with, "No bootable device insert disk and press any key". Whenever I try restarting my laptop, the same error messages show up.
I've been reading about Toshiba laptops, to try to remedy this issue, and I've learned that as of 2007, Toshiba discontinued the recovery disks that had always accompanied the laptops, and instead, allow you to totally restore your computer without the help of a disk. (The model of my laptop is Satellite L300D - 01P).
Now, apparently to restore a Toshiba laptop, you're supposed to press the '0' key while also pressing the power button, but when I do this, there is a beeping noise (which is apparently supposed to happen), but the error messages (ending with "No bootable device insert disk and press any key") still show up. Other than the affirmative beeping noise, no changes occur.
Anyone had this problem or have any suggestions of how to fix it?

Have you also learned that you SHOULD create recovery DVD using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator tool? When something goes wrong with HDD you can use this disc for operating system installation. This is clearly described in Users manuals document.
Back to your problem:
I don't know for sure but Im afraid you have some problem with HDD controller or HDD itself.
Is HDD recognized in BIOS settings (F2 at start up)? -

First, press Option key while your Mac is starting and select Macintosh HD. When your computer has started, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose Macintosh HD, so your computer will always start into OS X.
If it doesn't work, press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility. Then, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and verify the disk. If there's a problem, repair the disk and restart.
If the hard drive can't be repaired, take the Mac to an Apple Store because the hard drive is damaged. If it hasn't got any problem, reinstall OS X -

Toshiba 640GB HDD from the looks of it.
The laptop is unable to boot into Windows, so I suspect the hard drive. But I ran the hard drive test and it passed all the tests. The SMART test and both the short and long test. I ran the tests multiple times and it passed each time. I tried reseating the hard drive and still no go. I also removed the HDD and connected it to my desktop PC to see if it detects and it did. Ran the Windows 7 own HDD test and it passed.
Currently, there doesnt seem to be any operating system at all on the HDD. When I check, there is a C: drive of ~90GB partition that is ~90GB free, but inside there are Windows files/folders. There is also a D: drive Recovery partition that says ~26GB with only ~2GB free, but when I go inside there's only ~350MB worth of data.
So then I ran the memory test (in BIOS) and it failed immediately. I reseated the RAM module. I tried the other slot. It still failed. So is it safe to say the memory is the cause of this problem?
Pressing the F11 key that is supposed to take me to the System Recovery only leads me back to the black screen with "No Boot Device. Insert boot disk and press any key"
I even tried to install Windows 7 to see if it'll work. I was able to get the laptop to boot/read off the Windows 7. But when I click to install, it asks for a boot device driver or something like that.
My friend doesn't have the recovery disk either. I guess she lost it.
Anyway, is it as simple as replacing the memory or could it actually be the HDD (even though it passes)?

The date was the first time I ran the tests. I havent received those numbers (error codes?) since.
EDIT: Just for kicks, I ran Memtest 2.11 just now (forgot I had the disc) and it immediately went red with thousands of errors, hah.Hi bghs,

I understand that you were unable to boot into Windows, and you suspected the hard drive and tested it, but it passed both short and long test. With that being said and the fact that it also passed leads me to believe the hard drive is fine.
You tested the memory and it failed. You tried reseating and swapping slots but they still failed the test.
I would test each card individual with the memtest to determine if it is just one or both cards that have an issue.
When you installed it in another computer, you did see the recovery partition. Once the memory issue is resolved, if you are still unable to boot into Windows, I suggest you do a recovery with the minimized image. Here is a link to Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8) to assist you with that process.
