Disk I/O errors with Mail only

For the past few days, I have noticed Mail was running slowly - especially when starting. Would take forever to start pulling in messages. I looked for solutions and disabled non-essential accounts. Then I took all 5 email accounts offline. Still would get hangs and even beachballs today.
I opened console and found that I was getting a LOT of disk1s2 I/O errors whenever Mail was opened. The errors would continue until it was closed.
Note: This is on a mid-2011 iMac. Disk1s2 is the internal hard drive. I now boot off an SSD thunderbolt. The internal holds all data; applications live on the SSD.
I restarted the computer. Then opened console and waited. No i/o errors. I opened every other program in my dock and got one i/o error when Carbon Copy Cloner was first opened. I closed everything and then opened Mail. It hung as usual and the I/O errors started coming. I eneded up with 40 I/O errors in the 10 minutes that Mail was opened and (eventually) closed. This was with all accounts set to offline.
I'm stumped. Any thoughts???
Thanks
E
About this Mac: OS 10.9.3 2.7 i5 32 gigs RAM (I use Photoshop a lot and decided to max out RAM). Ram has been there for over 1 year.

The hard drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Hi,
I have some problem with Mail service with the Webspaces application. I have configured the Service (with MS Exchange server) with WebSpaces Application with the required IMAP, SMTP, External Application and LDAP Settings correctly. I opened the Mail Page and Logged in with the

The server probably wants you to use the STARTTLS command before you authenticate.
See the com.sun.mail.smtp package javadocs for the property to set to enable that.

• Port 0 error with mail connection HELP!

Hello all I have seen this topic on the forum before but all the solutions out there have not worked. I have worked on my school's wireless network for more than a year now and have had no problem using apple's mail to access .mac mail and g-mail mail (via pop mail forwarding) until three months ago or so. Then all of a sudden mail wont get the mail from the two accounts and I have these popular error messages
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "[email protected]" or try again. The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "mail.mac.com" on port 0 timed out.
and
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "G-mail" or try again. The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "pop.gmail.com" on port 0 timed out.
I have tried two suggested fixes:
1) I went to network port configurations and only checked the configurations I wanted to use to connect to the internet and dragged the one used most (airport) to the top
2) I went to the proxy section and disabled (unchecked) the SOCKS proxy. Some posts have suggested that a SOCKS proxy update in 10.4.7 may have caused the problem.
Neither of these have worked. Also, I have contacted my network administrator thinking that the school's firewall might be causing the problem. To test this, he shut down the firewall and still the problem occured. I am out of suggestions. Anyone have anything else to try.
Ohh by the way, when I am at home on my home network, mail works fine and I am able to get my e-mail as usual.

• ITunes - iPhone Sync Error with Mail Accounts

Whenever I sync my iPhone with iTunes I get the error message, "iTunes could not sync mail accounts to the iPhone 'Henry's iPhone" because an error occurred remapping record identifiers./Try syncing your iPhone again. If the problem persists, replace the mail accounts on the iPhone from the info tab in the iPhone preferences."
If I uncheck the mail accounts sync option in the info tab, the problem goes away, but returns when I recheck the option.
What does this error message mean? More to the point, how, precisely do I remedy the situation?

Easiest to just leave mail account syncing off. FYI, that setting does not sync emails, it only syncs the account settings. If email is working on your phone, there's no need to sync the settings.

• Error with mail adapter

Hi,
I have an idoc to email scenario.
The email is to be triggered, in case of an error in one of the idoc field values.
The email, is being triggered successfully as seen in sxi_monitor. But, the receiver mail adapter is failing(as seen in adapter monitoring).
The error as seen in adapter monitoring:
error occured: [2006-10-03T12:34:02Z] unable to call the mailer; com.sap.aii.messaging.srt.BubbleException: Failed to call the endpoint [null "null"]; nested exception caused by: java.io.IOException: server not responding OK to MAIL FROM; 501 5.5.4 Invalid Address
This is not an issue with the address specified, because, there are other interfaces which are using the same adapter to send mails successfully.
MDT(Messaging system) specifies error as GENERAL_ERROR.
Any hints?
Thanks,
Smitha.

Hi,
>>> MDT(Messaging System), the error is specified as GENERAL_ERROR.
then maybe you need to ask some General about it?
or at least a Colonel? ))
but frankly saying there must be a difference
it it works in once case and doesn't in the
other don't you agree? so all you need to do
it is to find it

I have updated both my macbook Pro and my 27inch iMac to Yosemite. When I get e mails there is no problem with my macbook pro but with my iMac for some reason I don't get some of the emails. I get the title of the email but I do not get the email content. Some emails come through perfectly ok and other have no content. I have re-indexed the mail, still has the error, I have rebuilt the mail box but still have the error, So I am at a lose anybody know what the best fix?

• Disk Utility burn error with dmg file

I'm using a Pioneer DVR 106D to burn a dmg file on to a blank DVD. I've done it many times before with the disk utility.
But now I'm getting this message when I try to burn the dmg or make a new image off the old DVD master:
"Device drained its buffer without burn underrun protection"
Can anyone please tell me how I can fix this problem?
Thanks
OS 10.3.9

I have encountered the same problem. I have a Mac Book Pro from 2007, and it has gone through 3 DVD writers so far, all of which have ruined DVD+R DL disks. I have occasionally been able to burn one, but usually during verify, I get this error message:
Communication to the disk drive failed: 0x8002022
And disk utility fails with a "Invalid B-tree node size" error
Oddly, when I try to burn a disk near capacity (6.5Gb or more) it is more likely to fail than if I burn a smaller disk.
I've been using Memorex DVD+R DL disks, but I have used other brands in the past but they have failed, too. Out of about 50 disks so far, I have had success with about 5.

• Never seen prob with mail only on iPad

I am having things show up on my iPad mail account. They say,"No Sender", "No Content", with a date stamp of 12/31/69. There is no " dot " to highlight so I can not delete them and I'm getting about 10-15 per day.

Try this and see of they disappear. Close the mail app completely and reboot the iPad.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the mail icon. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

• Strange sending errors with Mail 2.1.3

Some emails are being returned.
On a test email to myself sent to [email protected]
it is returned stating that "me"@abc.com is invalid
Note, that ampersands are being set or appear to be being set on each side of the prefix before the at sign.
These have so far occured when sending emails through my compuserve (i.e. aol) account. Not all emails are affected though.
Any clues please?

None of the affected addresses are in the address book.
In the example you gave, it was your eMail addy, but it returns qoutes sometimes on other "To:" addies also?
Found this that explains why sometimes the 1st part could be enclosed in quote marks...

• Cross Post:: Disk Utility Application - Errors with USB Drive

I have a 4200 2.5" 100GB Hard Drive in a "portable" configuration that I've used for some time. I had not plugged it into my MBP until today and it seemed to read the drive, but that's about it. I went to Disk Utility to do what I used to call in the PC world a "format" or "fdisk" to get all the stuff off of it and get it setup as a Backup drive for my MBP. Essentially, the drive is now kaput! Actually, what happens is, when I attempt any task in the Disk Utility app, it simply freezes up and no matter how long I wait (I've waited thirty minutes) nothing happens and I'm forced to "force end" to the app. Any ideas on this?
I am able to take the drive to my XP machine and reformat / repartion the drive, but it will not allow files to be copied over to it in the mac using the NTFS. This also seems odd to me. Any ideas on this one?
Thanks,
Bob

I posted a reply to that.
Explanation:
I posted originally in the other forum because it is a USB drive issue. I cross posted because it is an Application issue. I probably should have just posted in one or the other!
Thanks Jim,

• Disk i/o error on sleep wake ONLY

I'm having a currious and worrisome problem. For the past few weeks I've been inindated by a problem where after waking from a lengthy sleep, my late 2011 MBP will hang for about 5 minutes with a spinning beachball. I checked the console error log and notice a number of "kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error" lines. Of course, my first thought was that this was a physical hard drive failure. However, I've found that after this innitial wait, the computer will run for hours, even perform huge HDD seek and write tasks and produce absolutely no other disk errors, running perfectly smoothly. If this truly was a hard drive failour, wouldn't I be experiencing disk i/o errors fairly consistantly?
Another curious thing, before every batch of disk errors, I've noticed that I get a:
"ATSFindFolder timeout. (domain:-32763, dirType:'font', createFolder:false, ATSServer pid:162)"
This may be quincidence and simply the specific task performed during sleep wakeup in line before the operation that causes the disk i/o error. However, it might be related.
System info:
OS 10.9.2, 16GB RAM, early 2011 MacBook Pro (8,1). 1TB 7200rpm HGST HDD.
I recently installed the new 1TB HGST drive, and used a clone program to migrate all my files over from the old drive. But around the same time I upgraded to Mavericks, and installed a host of new software (the reason for the drive upgrade). My disk i/o problems did not coincide directly with any of these updates, though. S.M.A.R.T checks out as drive verrified. All disk permissions have been fixed multiple times, PRAM zapped.

Thank you so much for your help ruwin I also kept getting the "Disk I/O error". It only started happening tonight. I had read other things to do - tick "show hidden files, folders, and drives" which I already had ticked. I uninstalled and reinstalled skype. This also did not work. Luckily I found your comment, and it worked! I tried deleting the DbTemp folder, but when I logged into skype it still came up with the error. So I uninstalled my version again, and installed the older version like you said. So thanks heaps, I now have it working again on my laptop. I guess it was just the update, as I had the 6.9 something version on it. I knew it wasn't a problem with my actual "Skype", as it still worked on my iphone. So I figured it had to be a problem with the laptop version. You just saved me a visit to the computer shop Thanks again!

• Contacts on client machine suffer from disk I/O errors

Contacts are running slow if not at all on my client machines. I check the logs and it is having trouble with accessing the files and or writing the files. all other programs seem to work fine. Mail hangs but I think it is because of the contacts issue. It seems to have trouble reading the contacts list and dumps the list and attempts to rebuild from iCloud and the server. there are many .unknown files in the library. The logs state that there is a disk I/O error while accessing /Network/myserver/Volumes/MyBook/Users/username/Library/Address Book (this is from memory but it is close). The contacts work perfectly (as expected) if the user is logged into the server.
I am running 10.8 server and clients with shared home folders. the user folders are on an external drive. the drive does have permissions turned on. I have wiped out the contacts directory in the Library folder and it proceeds to rebuild but the problem is still there.

At first I thought it may be related to upgraded 10.8 clients and server i.e. went throught the normal install option without re-installing OSX.
So I completely rebuild (i.e. erased and then installed Mountain Lion from USB stick) the server and the client machines...but I still get the same issue, so clearly this is NOT the solution.
I have also observed (upon reading others' issues with Contacts/mail) apple forums - so I followed the the same action (trashed the Address Book folder in ~Library/Application Support/ ) after unchecking everything in iCloud in system prefs/restarting etc.) but this doesn't so solve the problem either
I also observed teh following behaviours:
Login into iCloud for the first time - appears to be ok
Run Contacts - appears to be ok
Wait the addresses to sync from iCloud - appears to be ok
Quit
Run Contacts - still appears to be ok
(i.e. the errors above are not displayed in log)
Run Mail (which takes a long time)
Contacts sudden looses all address and effectively both Mail and Contacts freeeze. It is at this point I start seeing the above errors
I get a further odd error in Contacts (in a triange with '!' warning)
Basically Contacts and mail don't seem to want to work together - they appear ok in isolation - obviously this isn't acceptable.
I've noted that if I create a local logon on any one of the client macs, the issue with contacts/mail does not occur and runs perfectly smoothly. So in my eyes it appears to be a problem in Mountain Lion Server/Client Combo Only (I did not have this issue under Lion Server/Client Combo)

• Disk I/O Error on Windows 7 x64

Hi,
I am recieving the Disk I/O error as of last week.
I have looked and tried all explanations on here: quitting and restarting skype, deleting the bits-and-bobs you're told to delete in the appdata folders, and uninstalling/reinstalling and updating to the new version of Skype.... NOTHING works!!
I haven't made any recent changes to my computer (to my knowledge).
I am running Windows 7 x64
Please help.

• Airport Extreme n: error with USB HDD; Update 5.1 crashes

Ok, seems to be a few bugs for me:
I have no Macs as yet, so operating with an old IBM T30 WinXP laptop until WWDC in June when (hopefully) Steve will announce a new MBP
1) Cannot connect to my 300Gb Maxstor external HDD, keep getting the 'disk needs repair' error with the Airport Utility. It's previously formatted to NTFS, cannot format to FAT32 as the volume is too big according to Windows....
2) I can't update the Utility to 5.1 so can't update the Firmware either. Have tried unsuccessfully to update to 5.1 but when I do, it just crashes when I try to run it so I'm stuck with v5.0 for the meantime.
Any ideas or peeps getting the same from their Windows machines ?
Most important for me is to see the external HD, it's got all my media on it.
Cheers in advance

Hi!
I've found a good tutorial that can help you format harddrives to FAT32, for volumes under 2TB. You have to download a small application called fat32format.exe, and execute it in a command prompt in Win XP. But take a look at the tutorial:

• Is there a way to merge Mail account A on my desktop with Mail account A on a separate hard disk? I lost all my old messages in July, but they are on the hard disk. Thanks!

Is there a way to merge Mail account A on my desktop with Mail account A from separate hard disks? I lost all my old messages (thousands of them) in July, but most of them are safe elsewhere. I'd really like to put them all in one place, though!
The desktop (iMac) now has messages from July 2012 onward.
My separate hard disk backup has old messages up to June 2012.
Most of the ones between June and July are on a MacBook Pro which I bought about that time.
Is there a relatively easy and safe way to put these messages back together in Mail account A on my desktop again?
Many thanks!

Well, your profile info says 10.4.11, and you are posting your question in the iMac (PPC) category. If you are running Snow Leopard, it must be a fairly recent Intel iMac.
In that case, you should definitely post your question here
https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard
where other Snow Leopard users can see your question. Restate the problem, what error messages you get, and what you have tried already (for trouble-shooting).
