Disk i/o question

As I believe our workflow will be I/O bound just as it is now, the new machine I build will have a raidcard  setup for data storage. The work we do entails editing imageI up to 3--4GB max, no rendering. I haven't yet decided which sas/sata card and whether to use 600MB 10,000 sata drives or much more expensive and faster 15000 sas drives.
1. I see a number of you are using Areca card, why? Do they have better perfomance than equiv Adaptec or LSI cards?
2. Some of you are using raid 3 instead of raid 5, which is supported by a limited number of cards. Raid 3 is usually poor for random reads and writes but supposedly works well for large image files. I have no experience using raid 3.
3. I would prefer to use the 10000 sata drives due to price difference but since they are slower I am thinking about using an Intel SLC SSD drive as a temporary work space drive and then move the finished image to the raid array until burrning to dvd and shipping out to client. Altough some clients may have us do 100 + images at a time, once they have been shipped and comfirmed as good we will delete them after 30-60 days. The 64GB Intel is plenty large enough for this temporary workspace and we can refresh the drive periodically to maintain the write speed without redoing anything.
4. I haven't yet decided whether to include the OS and CS5 in the raid array or to use a separate OS 10000 disk or maybe a raid 1 mirror 10000 array using the onbord software raid. I don't want to use a large SSD fot the OS due to price/benefit cost and also don't want a raid 0 array for the OS drive as I don't want the downtime or hassle of rebuilding when it fails. The OS disk is mostly reads and few writes so I beleive a mirror will read almost as fast as a stripe and write about as fast as a single disk but if anyone has a different experience please comment.
5 I will probably use 8 disks for sata raid and 8 for sas along with the OS disk/disks and a SSD drive if beneficial.
Please comment and tell me what you don't like or do like and why.
Larry

Your information has me confused. You keep talking about images (imagel?) and say no encoding, I see nothing to convince me that we are talking about normal video editing.  What is it that needs the high I/O.
There is nothing better for the highest speed RAID than the Areca controllers.
With the high end Areca controllers you can achieve the same high speed transfer rate with more 7200 rpm drives and save a lot of money and have lots more storage
You definitely do not want the OS and applications on the same drive. I would avoid using RAID of any sort on the boot drive.  You do not need a large OS/applications drive .

  • MacBook Pro hard disk upgrade shows question mark folder

I recently bought a 1TB hard disk for my teenaged daughter's MacBook Pro.
I formatted it, used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the existing drive. I even made sure to create the recovery partition.
I restarted while holding the option key and chose the new drive.  It booted fine so I checked in System Preferences to make sure it was selected as the boot device.
I opened the case and swapped the drives. Put it back together and restarted only to see the question mark folder!
I tried booting while holding the option key and now I get the choose a network prompt.
I am desperate and hate the thought of disappointing my daughter. It used to be that I was her hero who could fix anything now I'm the guy who asks too many questions and doesn't put enough money on her debit card. Granted she busts her butt getting awesome grades and I was upgrading her drive so she could continue her video yearbook for her school. So I shouldn't complain but it would be great to be her hero again.
BTW, I am not a newbie to the tech world but I don't do nearly as much in the Apple arena as I do in the PC world.  Then again I've been a senior tech in the industry sine before IBM had a PC.  In fact, my first real work was on a 6502 processor that used the same machine code as the Rage of the day, the Apple ][. All that to say I usually can find my way around a problem but this one has me stumped.
    I appreciate any assistance offered.
    Thanks,
    Thom

I tried to reboot with the option, command P. And R keys pressed.  I heard the ding several times it still showed the question mark!  I also tried the shift option and it only displayed the network selection. Also I tried to press C so I could boot from USB and it didn't work either.
If I cannot get this to work I fear my only other choice is to use a FireWire enclosure. This isn't a good option as my daughter does mostly movie work and iMovie has this terrible "feature" that forces all movies to be stored in one place. It sure would be handy if it allowed movie projects to set the storage location individually.  I suppose I could simply move all the movies to the drive and try to find a way to point all iMovie projects to the external drive.
Unfortunately,  my daughter is one of those Mac users who isn't savvy enough to use anything but the default settings. Heck I've tried to explain to her that she ought to get rid of the big files once she has done her work.  That's why her drive is always full.

  • Xserve disks and RAID questions

I have an Intel Xserve with its two original 750 GB disks. These are configured as RAID 1 (mirror).
I intend to purchase an identical disk as a hot spare and upgrade two old G4s with four each of the same disks as reserve web servers/backup.
The original disks are Seagate ST3750640NS which I can buy for £140 although the Apple price is £386 including the disk carrier. Apple refuses to sell the disk carriers separately.
The PCI boards I have found are:
    http://firmtek.stores.yahoo.net/sata1v4.html
    and
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatax4i.html
    costing $120 and $200 respectively.
There are PC boards as cheap as $20 but these may have bootability and compatibility issues. There appears to be little information about the proportion of hard/soft RAID resulting from any of these boards.
    My questions are:
1 - Is there an inexpensive way of buying disk carriers for recent Xserves?
2 - Are there alternative satisfactory PCI boards?
3 - Do such boards differ much in terms of RAID types supported?
4 - Do such boards differ much in terms of the degree to which they are host computer independent? - ie more hard than soft and hence, presumably, faster.

    >1 - Is there an inexpensive way of buying disk carriers for recent Xserves?
I'm not aware of any sources other than Apple (at least that I'd trust).
    >2 - Are there alternative satisfactory PCI boards?
There are several manufacturers who make PCI RAID cards that you can use. You've listed two, but there are others including the RocketRAID series, and those from ACard.
    >3 - Do such boards differ much in terms of RAID types supported?
In my opinion, you get what you pay for.
Cheap cards may support RAID 0 and 1, while more expensive cards may add RAID 5. This may or may not be important for you if you're just mirroring.
There are going to be performance differences between each card. Since you're using G4's, though, you're going to have other bottlenecks, so disk speed isn't likely to be a big factor.
    >4 - Do such boards differ much in terms of the degree to which they are host computer independent? - ie more hard than soft and hence, presumably, faster.
If you get a card that works in a Mac, it's likely to also work in other hardware. The same can not necessarily be said the other way around - cheap PC-centric cards may not support Macs, mostly because of driver issues.
Note that you may also have issues with booting - not all cards can create bootable volumes which may leave you out in the cold if you don't check that first.

  • Oracle RAC 11gR2 on Windows - Disk Storage Newbie question

    Hi all
I have been reading through the Grid install guide in an effort to understand how to set up a RAC solution. I am new to Oracle so a lot of these concepts I am trying to understand but from what I am reading a typical install would be to have my cluster software installed on a particular shared storage type of either OCFS or ASM. These storage types then sit on top of a redundant option such as RAID, or logical volumes across disks or a kind of mirroring (SAME).
I know what I have said is probably a rough attempt at understanding this but what I would like is if anyone has any diagrams that lay this out for me to aid my understanding that would be great.
I am kind of at a stage where I am thinking about creating a RAC installation on some VMWare and want to know how best to configure the initial disks, and whether to add them to a RAID or carve them into partitions.
    Hope I have made sense.
    Thanks

  • ASM Disk Remove/Add Question

    Hello All,
    I have a quick question -
We have an ASM Diskgroup that had 8 Disks in it. I removed 2 Diskss and the Diskgroup has been rebalanced. I have not done anything with the removed Disks.
They both appear in the ASM target as eligble to add back into the Diskgroup.
Do I need to re-format/partition/create disk on them before adding them back in? Would existing data on the Diskl cause an issue in the Diskgroup?
This is the first time I will be adding back Disks that have been previously in the Diskgroup.
Thanks in advance for the advice.
    Michele

    Hi,
Disks eligible to be assigned to a diskgroup must have the status "CANDIDATE" or "FORMER" or "PROVISIONED".
    · CANDIDATE - Disk is not part of a disk group and may be added to a disk group with the ALTER DISKGROUP statement
    · PROVISIONED - Disk is not part of a disk group and may be added to a disk group with the ALTER DISKGROUP statement. The PROVISIONED header status is different from the
CANDIDATE header status in that PROVISIONED implies that an additional platform-specific action has been taken by an administrator to make the disk available for ASM.
    · FORMER - Disk was once part of a disk group but has been dropped cleanly from the group. It may be added to a new disk group with the ALTER DISKGROUP statement.
The ALTER DISKGROUP...DROP DISK without WAIT option statement returns before the drop and rebalance operations are complete. Do not reuse, remove, or disconnect the dropped disk until the HEADER_STATUS column for this disk in the V$ASM_DISK view changes to FORMER.
You don't need change anything on OS Level. Oracle will reuse asmdisk dropped without needs perform any administrative task on OS Level.

  • PowerBook 145B shows pic of floppy disk with flashing question mark

I recently discovered a PowerBook 145B in my garage. When I turn it on, it makes the start-up sound but then goes to a blank screen with a picture of a floppy disk with a flashing question mark.
I don't have any of the original floppies that would have come with it. Is there anything I can do to make it work?

    Hi,
The technical specifications for the PowerBook 145B can be found here.
Although the original operating system was 7.1 (not free), you could try System 7.0.1 instead (see KB article TA33972) instead. System 7.0.1 is available for download from Apple (for example, US and British versions). Access to another older Macintosh computer (with a built-in floppy drive) would normally be required in order to create properly sector-copied floppies from disk images. If absolutely necessary, the British version (which is provided as individual images) can even be used to produce the system disks on a PC (using a special technique).
System 7.5.3 is also available (e.g., US and British), but may not be ideal for a computer with a small hard drive and limited RAM. A boot floppy (use the Network Access Disk 7.5 here) is not included in the 7.5.3 download.

  • Disk utility permissions question

    Hello,
I am VERY happy with my Mac. However, since installing OS10.5 (upgrade from my 10.4) whenever I used my Disk Utility to repair permissions, I get a HUGE list of repairs. Every time I used the Utility, it comes up with this huge list that, as far as I can tell, is all the same.
So my question is, is it actually repairing the permissions?
I've never had this happen on my previous OS. If something showed up, it repaired it and then, when I run the utility again, it shows that all is well and no repairs are necessary.
Can anyone help me? I have also been having problems with my Toast Titanium 10 and my MOTU Digital Performer 5 since my OS upgrade.
I took a screen shot of my Utility permissions after it's been run. I could send that to you if you would need to see it.
Thank you for all your help!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the LDOM 1.1 Admin guide the section on virtual disk multipathing leaves me with one question.
    LDOM 1.1
Scenario: T5240 with 2 IO domains. Each IO domain has an HBA attached to shared SAN storage. The storage folks assign you the same 2 luns to both HBA's. Does each LUN have to be a member of it's own mpgroup? Or can all 4 luns belong to the same mpgroup?

  • AirPort Disk - A few questions

Now that the AirPort Extreme base station now has Gigabit ethernet I'm seriously considering getting one, but have a few questions:
At the moment I have a network drive (Western Digital) through a (none Apple) router which is formatted as FAT32. There's no option to alter the file format used so I can't copy files over with specific characters in the file names which are normally fine on drives formatted as Mac OS Extended, HFS Journaled (or whatever it's called).
It's a bit of a pain but it's handy to have the network drive as it serves 2 Macs & 1 Windows PC.
If I plugged a USB drive into the AirPort Extreme base station could I format it as Mac OS Extended & therefore copy any file over from my Macs to the USB drive? (Is there a choice of what file format you can use?)
If it does/can use Mac OS Extended format then can a Windows PC still read the contents of the USB drive?
My other option would be to buy a Gigabit network disk to plug into the AirPort Extreme (this would be faster than a USB drive right?). Does anyone know of one that can be formatted as Mac OS Extended?
One other question. My current router is 10/100 ethernet. To achieve optimal Gigabit ethernet speeds would I need new (Gigabit specific) ethernet cables or are all ethernet cables fine at any speeds?

Thanks a lot for the info. I'm pretty certain I'll be getting a AirPort Extreme now
(Although it looks a little cheap that all other routers have 4 ethernet ports & this one has only 3).
'In a similar fashion NAS devices present the data in a format unrelated to how the drive is formatted.'
So the fact that my NAS drive doesn't like certain characters is only related to that particular device, & in theory most other NAS devices should work properly with Macs & the characters they use in the file names. Do I understand that correctly?
Any info on whether I'll need special ethernet cables to achieve Gigabit speeds or not?

  • Disk Utility Backup Question

Hello, I have the latest Mac OS X updates on my Macbook Pro. My question is concerning Disk Utility. I am trying to backup my "home" folder or my entire hard drive as I am worried about losing files if my hard drive fails. I try to create a disk image of my "home" folder and about 10 to 15 percent of the way through, an error comes up saying that "(name of my home folder) cannot be copied" or something to that extent. I am fairly new to Macs, and I'm just wondering what this error is and how can I get around it and be able to back up all my information using Disk Utility, so that I can put it on my external hard drive. Thanks in advance,
    Todd

    Hello,
If you are trying to make disk image of the hard drive, and creating the disk image on that same hard drive, then that could be your problem.
You cannot really make an exact copy of something that is constantly changing.
Since the act of creating the image is also modifying the source, you would end-up going in circles.
You need to create your image on something else (a different drive).
That may not work either if the drive is in use while you are trying to make your image.
So, you could try booting from your original Restore Disk that came with your computer. Then, use the disk utility on that restore DVD to make your disk image.
But, if you want to go the easy route, consider using a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner.
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
This program can also be used to create a disk image version of your drive. That method would work like what you are trying to do now.
But, it can also be used to create an exact clone of your main hard drive to an external or second hard drive.
This would be a bootable backup that can be used to put your entire system back exactly as it was at the time of the backup.
This means that if something happens, you can boot from your external drive, and resume normal work. Or, you can boot from the external drive and run the program again to restore your computer to match the backup.
This backup is an exact clone of your entire installation, so it is readable by another machine.
It works great, and I've never had a problem with it.
If a full backup is not what you want, you can customize your backup to grab just what you want.
But, I use the "Clone" feature.
This has the advantage of being able to restore quickly, and return back to the exact point you were at when you backed-up.
And, by being able to boot from the backup, you don't have to use another computer or re-install your OS before you can restore. Just boot from the backup and restore.
I actually have my external hard drive partitioned into two sections.
One partition is used just for holding my system backup. It is sized to be large enough to hold my entire OS X installation and everything I keep on my system.
The other partition is the remaining portion of the drive. I use that one to hold large files that I use less frequently.
This works great because I can just over-write my backup partition for each backup without worrying about my data files (since they are on a separate partition).
And, it makes things much easier to manage.
This backup is the most flexible backup method there is.
    You can use it to:
    * Boot if your original hard drive were to fail completely
    * Boot if your original hard drive's OS X installation were corrupted
    * Restore your entire system to the exact state of the system at the time of backup. This means no re-installing and then restoring. Just boot and copy the drive back to your main drive. Nice, fast, and you're done.
    * If you don't need to restore the entire drive, then just grab the files you need.
    * It's readable by any Mac OS computer. No special software required to access it's files.
    Another popular program is SuperDuper:
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
This program has similar capabilities to the one I use. But, they charge for the full version.
But, if you want to use built-in tools, you can use the Disk Utility built-into Mac OS X. This article describes that and other methods:
    http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mac_help/pages/0016-backuposx.html
Also, keep in mind that in order to have a bootable backup, you need a FireWire drive or a computer that supports booting from a USB drive (only the new Intel Macs support booting from USB).
Naturally, if you do make a bootable backup copy, you'll want to make sure and test it before you count on it. So, you should boot the computer from the backup copy, and make sure that it all works as it should. That way you'll know it works when you need it.
To boot from an external drive or partition, turn on your computer, and press and keep holding the "Option" key until the selection menu appears.
A menu will appear, and in a few minutes you'll be able to choose the drive / partition you want to boot from and proceed from there.
    I hope this helps.

  • Using Repair Disk - maybe dumb question

I wanted to check on my hard drive since last night when booting up, I momentarily got the flashing question mark. The computer very briefly hesitated then booted up fine. I searched on this issue, and found that I needed to make sure that I had a start up disk selected. I did this, and have not had any further problems booting up with regard to the flashing question mark. (I have done this about 6 times.) I assume that addressed the flashing question mark issue.
However, I noted that the flashing question mark cold be a sign that there is a problem with my hard drive, and over the past two weeks it seems to me that my boot up is slow on my computer (macbook pro core duo processor) as the icons on the finder bar (wifi, speaker, clock and battery) are slow to appear.
With this in mind, I would like to run the disk utitlity to see if all is well on the hard drive.
When I boot up off the install disk, and hold down the "c" key, it acts like I want to instll the software. The first screen asks what language I want, and then after I chose, I am presented with a status bar and underneath it says something like preparing for installation.
I don't want to install. I thought a disk utility option was supposed to appear.
Should I let it continue on with preparing for installation, then when it is done, does it give the disk utility option?
I just seems to me that I don't want to do an install.
    Thanks in advance.
    Russell

Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

  • How do u creat BIOS recovery disk + nvidia firewall question.

    WooooHOoOOO....
after re-formating a dozen times, busted SCSI config, messed up driver install, I FINALLY GOT this board working at 100%!!!
This mobo powered through my entire DOOM 3 Odyssey to Hell NON-STOP without a SINGLE CRASH!! Definitely a good testament to this board's quality.
Now for the final few noob question, how do I create a bios recovery disk just in case things happened.
lastly... how do you properly setup the NV Firewall? After enabling it, none of the other computers in my network can see this computer with the MSI Board, so file and printer sharing all stops when the firewall is enabled.
Anyone here has a walkthrough on the firewall?
ONCE AGAIN...thanks to all who helped me!!!

i havent got my nvidia firewall to work imma wait until they release better drivers for it but for creating the bios recovery disk i think if u use msi's live update it will ask u if u want to create one or not.

  • Disk utility/repair question - "keys not in order"

I connected my 4G iPod to my computer via firewire when the battery was very low yesterday. For the first time, it wouldn't mount and now doesn't show up in system profiler when it is connected via firewire (even in disk mode). It shows up when it is connected via USB.
It shows up via firewire in disk utility, though. I verified the disk and repaired the disk and got a message "keys not in order". I tried to mount it through disk utility and it still wouldn't show up. I was able to eject it through disk utility though.
It is charging and playing fine.
Any ideas on how to fix "keys not in order" or how to do a full restore when it won't mount?
    Thanks for your help.
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   iTunes 6

We were able to get it fixed. First, I tried erasing it in disk utility. That just succeeded in getting the file with an exclamation mark and no way to restore it. It also wouldn't turn off at that point.
We took it to a PC and were able to reformat it on a PC and now it seems to be working at least initially again with my Mac.

  • Disk space-simple question

This is a simple question, I think: I have an external drive (250GB) and have my iPhoto and iTune libraries over there. If I delete about half of my photos from the main library (on the desktop, G4, running 10.4.10) to free up some space, will I still have all my photos from the original main library on the external drive, and just as important, will I still be able to update the external drive as I add new photos to the main library.
Sorry, I know this is basic stuff but I want to be sure I can free up some space but not lose any photos in the process.
    Thanks, Mike

    Hi--
If you delete files on the computer they will still remain on the external hard drive. HOWEVER, if you are using a backup program that updates the external drive to reflect the G4 then it may erase whatever you've deleted on the G4. It depends on how the backup program is set (if you are using one).
If you are not using a backup program and just dragging the folders over to the external drive manually then you would have to be careful not to replace the folders that you want to keep on the external drive. Say for example you have your "Pictures" folder on the external drive. If you delete a bunch of photos on your G4 and then move the "Pictures" folder from your G4 to the external drive, it will REPLACE the "Pictures" folder on the external drive.
One way to get around this would be to make a seperate folder on your external drive EACH time you made a backup, and drop your "Pictures" folder into that.
    Does this make sense?
