Disk image backup freez

I like to make a disk image of the partition with the operating system on it from time to time as a backup to an external hard drive. Works fine with my Powerbook G4 but the last couple of times I've tried to use disk utility to make such a disk image for my iMac it freezes. I have to shut the computer down with the button. It might actually finish but I don't know how to tell!? I'd rather it just work like it is supposed to. I just to the operating system partition. I do read only and no encryption. I do this all the time but now it doesn't work. I always throw the trash out, do a repair permissions and a disk repair before I do this. The first time this froze I did have an actual repair of the disk. It said it fixed it. That does worry me. Any ideas? Steve (p.s. I am doing this from the boot disk that came with the computer.)

To answer your question, it can be done with Disk Utility. You have to start up from your Mac OS X Installation Disk, and run Disk Utility from the Installer menu (because you can't make an image of the disk you are starting up from using this method). Note: If you have an external (or other) drive that has Mac OS X installed, you can start up from it and run Disk Utility.
Select the volume you want to image in the sidebar, then...
File menu > New > Disk Image from {name of disk}
Save the Disk Image file to another drive, such as an external drive.
To recover, run Disk Utility the same way. Go to the Restore tab. Click the Image... button to get the disk image into the Source field. Drag and drop the target volume from the sidebar to the field called Destination. Click the Restore button. I've done it a few times and it works fine.

  • Reinstalling, Migration Assistant, Disk Image backup

    I am in the unfortunate position of having to reinstall Tiger on my iBook. The disk image containing my backup files turns out to be non-bootable.
    After reinstalling Tiger (I have the updates up 10.4.10 on disk), will I be able to use Migration Assistant to replace the folders created by the re-installation with the same folders containing my backed-up information from my disk image backup?
    If I can't use Migration Assistant, how should I best get my backed up files on to the iBook...simply replace the folders? Any suggestions to reduece the pain appreciated.

    All you need is one update, the 10.4.10 combo updater for ppc.

    When you use Migration Assistant you are connecting to another Mac via firewire and transferring pretty much all your files, applications and settings.

  • Recovery Software for Disk Image Backup on External Drive

    Hello. I am currently running OSX Yosemite on a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. However, before I upgraded from OSX Maverick I installed a SSD as a boot drive and moved my original Toshiba HDD to the optical bay for media storage. Before the installation, I purchased a LaCie 1TB external hard drive, formatted it, then dragged the entire Toshiba HDD image from the desktop to the external HD. That image is visible on the external HD but is inaccessible by Disk Utility, whether I use it from the HD, the SSD, or the Installation DVD. All scans and attempts to mount and open the image fail. I realize now I made a mistake by not cloning the Toshiba HDD onto the external HD before starting but the image size (on the external HD) is 187GB, which corresponds with a somewhat compressed ~220GB (the original size of the Toshiba HDD). Therefore, it seems as though the files are present and intact, albeit currently inaccessible.
    Is there any way to recover the files from the disk image, i.e. via Data Recovery Software such as Data Rescue 4, Stellar Phoenix or R-Studio? Alternately, could I use the same software to recover the now deleted files from the wiped and reformatted Toshiba HDD? I'm having trouble accepting that the 187GB of data on the external drive are really gone, as it represents over a decade of media collection and contains many irreplaceable files. I'm hoping there is something that can be done before spending a lot of money on clean room data recovery services. Please help!!!

    General File Recovery
    If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
    The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

    I was curious if I could make an exact image of my HD with all the software i have installed and use that image in the event i need to rebuild my machine. So, for example, OSX, photoshop, final cut and all directories on the HD so I could easily haver this backup. Can it be done if i use the disc utility?

    To answer your question, it can be done with Disk Utility. You have to start up from your Mac OS X Installation Disk, and run Disk Utility from the Installer menu (because you can't make an image of the disk you are starting up from using this method). Note: If you have an external (or other) drive that has Mac OS X installed, you can start up from it and run Disk Utility.
    Select the volume you want to image in the sidebar, then...
    File menu > New > Disk Image from {name of disk}
    Save the Disk Image file to another drive, such as an external drive.
    To recover, run Disk Utility the same way. Go to the Restore tab. Click the Image... button to get the disk image into the Source field. Drag and drop the target volume from the sidebar to the field called Destination. Click the Restore button. I've done it a few times and it works fine.

  • Time Machine encrypted disk image backup?

    When Time Machine backs up my hard drive, it backs up a password-protected disk image as an open folder. Is there a way to back up the disk image without Time Machine opening it up?

    I've played around with this a little. As best I can tell, when cloning an entire HD volume both CCC and SuperDuper will always copy an image file (.dmg, .sparsebundle, etc) that resides that on that HD, whether or not that file's disk image is mounted at the time. However the contents of the mounted disk image volume will not be copied separately, and so If the disk image is encrypted, no unencrypted content will get transferred this way. However as mentioned in the SuperDuper link above, it's better to unmount the image in any event, in order to ensure that the underlying .dmg or .sparsebundle file gets copied faithfully.
    If you want to copy the contents of a mounted disk image with CCC or SuperDuper, you can do so as a completely separate procedure from copying the HD. If you first mount the image (giving a password if it was encrypted), that mounted image will appear as an independent volume in the "source list" of CCC or SuperDuper, and you can choose that volume as a source for the copy procedure. You would need to designate a different target volume as well, so as not to overwrite your HD clone. If the disk image was encrypted and you deliberately copy its mounted image separately in this fashion, the resulting files on the target will not be encrypted.

  • Recover lost disk image backup file

    I think I may have screwed myself, but basically I am trying to get back the sparseimage that was lost when I tried backing up my internal hdd to an external using SuperDuper. My issue is that the external HDD was formatted as NTFS so I was using the NTFS-3G driver for write access. So something must have happened when I tried to remount and and the file was lost. This was after running a checkdisk on a windows machine to get the ntfs partition to show up again. So basically I am trying to figure out what kind of software I could use, if any, to get this 80gb disk image back. Also I should note that I used compression when backing up the disk image so I am thinking that this might make my problem even more complicated. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

    Cool, Ya that program did a pretty good job. It seemed to have found my lost directory structure. However like I mentioned I think I'm running into an issue with the compression that was ran on the image after backing it up. A feature that I am now regretting using. Because when I try to recover a file, like a jpg, preview says it can't preview the file. And opening plain text files gives me what appears to be binary or hex etc. So I am thinking I am running into issues where the files are still compressed and I need to figure out how to decompress them first before I can fully recover them. I was considering trying to just recover the whole directory structure and renaming the the top folder to a .img or .dmg file but I am not sure if that will work. Any ideas?

  • Does a disk image backup of MBP to a G5 include parallels Windows XP

    My mbp display went out and I need to send in to get fixed. I booted the mbp in target disk mode and created a disk image of the mbp hard drive which has parallels/windows xp installed to an external drive using my G5 quad.
    I want to know if that will have all the windows files as well.

    if someone knows how I can access the windows files from my G5 somehow???

    It should have. Parallels normally stores a file in your Documents folder that holds the image of the PC .
    So, as long as you chose at the very least to image your home folder and you did not have Parallels set to use a WinXP Boot Camp partition then you will have every thing that was in your home folder. If you did an image of the entire drive, well then, you have absolutely every thing except a Boot Camp (separate partition) setup.

  • Question about Disk Image Backup/Restoring

    Ok, so i have a weird Boot Camp error that requires reformatting of my whole drive. Now I have thought up a procedure that I think will work, let me know if this is a viable option:
    1: Hook up a 320GB External Firewire Drive
    2: Boot up using the 10.6 DVD
    3: Go into Disk Utility
    4: Make an image of the Macintosh HD and save it to the External Drive
    5: Format the Macintosh HD
    6: Restore the Macintosh HD using the Image
    If i do this, will everything be hunky dory? Nothing is wrong with this? Thanks!

    Copy the content of the external to the internal--into an appropriately named folder. Then, clone your internal to the external. I would just use DU. First, use DU to partition the external GUID--which also will format it OS X extended (journaled). You might want to make two partitions if you have room (see below). To clone, go to the restore tab; select your internal volume and drag it to the source box. Then, select your external and drag it to the destination box. Then, click restore. If you can't perform the operation without previously selecting erase distination, then select it; let DU erase again; and then click restore.
    In an hour, more or less, you'll be ready to take care of your internal drive issue. Piece of cake. When you have fixed the internal, then just clone you Sno install on the external back to the internal. If you made two partitions, then copy the original external data to the second partition and remove it from your Sno installs if you want.

    According to this article, [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760], Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.

    Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.

  • Can't load disk image when doing first backup

    Hi
    I've had to erase my Time Capsule's Time Machine sparesebundle as it had a corruption. And now I am trying to do a first backup again.
    Unfortunately, I keep getting an error message telling me the machine can't create a disk image; I have no idea why. I have tried changing my computer name in case that makes a difference (but I don't see why as the previous name worked fine for a year or more).
    Since trying to start this new process, I have noticed that sometimes in the TM preference pane that the TC name is given a Time Capsule-1 as opposed to its normal name of Time Capsule.
    Below is the log captured from the TM widget.

    I tried to start the backup again, after logging out and back in again (as I had done several times before), but this time the sparsebundle loaded ok and the backup started properly.
    So there's no need for anyone to spend any time on me.

    Time Machine worked OK for several months. Now I get this error every 10 minutes or so.
    I unplugged Time Machine capsule and "Change Disk" in Time Machine options.
    Nothing helps, I continue to get this error.
    I cannot Enter Time Machine either. "Connecting to Server, Connecting to backup" does not work.
    Help please because I will probably have to archive and reinstall Leopard. I need the backups,

    # Try removing the apostrophe from the disk images name (sparsebundle).
    *A Stalled .inProgress Files:* #
    It may be that the previous backup attempt was ungracefully interrupted leaving remains that Time Machine can’t deal with.
    Stop any current backup attempt. Choose “Stop Backing Up” from the Time Machine menu.
    Open the Time Machine Preferences and turn “OFF” Time Machine.
    Open your Time Machine drive.
    Open the folder labeled “Backups,backupdb”.
    Now open the folder containing backups of the computer in question.
    Are there any “.inProgress” files there. Delete them by dragging the file to the Trash. Or Ctrl-Click the file and select "Move to Trash" from the contextual menu. (Give this time as deleting a large file on an external disk can take a while.)
    Turn Time Machine back “ON”. Now try backing up again.
    NOTE: If the above procedure becomes impossible to perform, try accessing the disk image from another Mac. Some have discovered that attempting a repair from another computer succeeds where the original computer failed.

    The last date of my back up was 10/4- keeps saying The backup disk image "/backup disk image "/Volumes/time Capsule/ cheryl lynott's MacBook.sparsebundle" is already in use?

    HELP -- what does this mean -- .......
    Often, this error can be corrected by pulling the power on the Time Capsule, waiting a few minutes, and powering the Time Capsule back up.

  • How do i find or replace the missing disk image for my HD

    How do i find or replace the missing disk image? for my HD ........as it is missing when i try to back up with time machine, 
    i asked for assistance the other day with time machine
    now i have worked out this is the reason i can not back up with TM, due to no disk image in my portable hard drive
    I saw a post on youtube where it explains you can copy a your HD disk imag from your time machine back ups enabeling, time machine to back up
    But i can not find where the TM Back up driver is situated in my TM Back up's
    Some advice would be greatly appreceate   as i am rather new to Mackintosh

    Hi again.
    Just re-reading your first post, I wonder if you're confusing a disk image backup with Time Machine?
    It's certainly possible to create a disc image of your Macintosh HD and copy it to an external drive.
    However, as a backup that method has a drawback; you can't boot from a disc image directly. It needs to be mounted on a bootable system before it can be used. So it's not really much use if the internal HD fails, at least as far as allowing you to carry on working while the repair is carried out.
    Much better (and simpler) is to clone the whole drive to the external using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper (there are plenty of others, but those appear to be the most popular).
    That will give you a bootable backup which can be kept up to date by incremental backups using the same applications.
    In the event of total internal HD failure all you need to do is replace the drive then boot from the clone and reverse clone to the internal to get up and running again.
    Many of us use both a bootable clone and Time Machine (on seperate drives) as each has it's different uses.
