Disk image crashes Finder
I have an encrypted disk image that crashes the Finder when attempting to mount. I have tried using Disk Utility to repair and it apparently mounts and runs the check, but I still notice the Finder crashing in the background, even as Disk Utility claims there are no issues with the image.
Outside of moving onto a disk recovery program, is there anything else I can try? And should it come to a disk recovery program, can anyone recommend one, particularly for problems with disk images.
Thanks in advance!!
Understood baltwo... again, thank you for your perspectives. So I bought Disk Warrior and gave it a go by starting up via the CD and choosing File > Rebuild Disk Image. It found 5 errors: 4 files with incorrect text encoding values and 1 folder with an incorrect flag. All 5 were deemed repaired. However, upon reboot and subsequent attempt at opening the image, the same result was observed -- the Finder crashed. I also tried it with a version of Disk Warrior installed in the Utilities folder. In this case, Disk Warrior started the process of checking the image, but the Finder crashed.
I'm going to continue to tinker, but in the meantime if anyone has had success repairing disk images using another utility, I'd love a recommendation.
Thanks in advance!

Lost disk image in Finder (Desktop) for backup disk on Intel Mac Pro OS 10.7.3. Time Machine cannot find the internal backup disk. The volume is grayed out in Disk Utility, though it CAN verify the volume. How do I get it back on my desktop?
First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
Try again to back up. -
How Do I Get At My Disk Image In Finder?
Hello
I've used Disk Utility to create a disk image. I want to copy that .dmg file to a USB stick drive to back it up. How do I do that?
I've tried dragging the icon from Disk Utility but that didn't work. I know the file is actually stored in /Volumes/ but the Finder hides that directory.
Thanks!Hi IanB
Make the default directory for disk images to be the desktop.
you ask
s there any way to access the full Unix directory with Finder rather than resorting to Terminal like I did?
No, Finder is the GUI and is not intended to have the functionality of terminal. People get themselves into enough trouble as it is.
When you do need to something at a fundamental level, you can't get anything more powerful than Terminal.
I would use Disk Utility some more, to become familiar with making diskimages, and note their locations as I have described in my first post, and you should get a sense of control over what you are creating and where it is.
And thank you for the star, that is thoughtful.

Can't eject disk image from Finder in Mountain Lion
I just got a new MacBook pro. I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Any time I try to unmount an external hard drive or eject a disk image from the Finder, nothing happens (either clicking the contextual eject icon or right-clicking). The items in question are not in use when I try to eject them. I'm only able to do so with Disk Utility. Any ideas? I've repaired disk permissions but the problem persists.
I am having similar issues with my user account. It also is the same in Yosemite.
Disc images, external hard drives etc dragged to trash (get eject icon) are simply ignored.
Pressing Eject button in side bar of Finder are ignored.
It seems to be a permission/account issue as:
- using computer under a different account doesnt have this problem
- transferring account over to another mac continues the problem on the new computer.
Log file seems not to have any errors. -
Managing Events and/or Projects With Disk Images
I came across this method of managing Events and Projects a while ago. I finally got around to giving it a try. Personally, I really like this method.
It's simple.
It keeps things very well organized.
It's easy to open only the project or events that you want.
It's easy to consolidate and back up once you're done.
It takes some workload off FCP X by not having to always open up all your Events and Projects.
So, I thought I would share this for those of you who were not already aware of it.
This is my workflow: (based on the link below)
I create a Disk Image (named for the Event/Project).
(Note: There are two places to create the name, I use both, keep them the same)
I open up FCP X.
I typically put only one Event on this Disk Image.
I then reference whatever Media I need in this Event.
I usually don't bother to copy the media. (except when I'm done and I archive it)
You can create multiple Events, if you feel the need for additional organization.
Then I create however many Projects I need.
(since Projects equates to Sequences from prior FCP versions)
I have a unique Disk Image for each Event/Project that I work on.
To use them ...
First, always make sure FCP X is not running.
Locate the Disk Image in finder.
Double click on the Disk Image and it will Mount on your desktop.
(assuming it's not already mounted on your desktop)
Open up FCP X and it will load the Event(s)/Project(s) in the Disk Image.
If you don't want to work on an Event/Project in FCP X (make sure FCP X is not open), in Finder, simply Eject the Disk Image.
Now when you open FCP X, it won't be there.
Its not gone, but since it's not mounted on the desktop, FCP X simply doesn't see it.
To get it back (obviously quit FCP X first) simply double click the Disk Image in Finder and it remounts.
Open FCP X and you can see it's back.
You can open (double click to mount) as many Event/Project Disk Images as you want.
Just make sure you mount and un-mount disk images when FCP X is not running.
If find this to be a great workflow.
Many thanks to Steve Martin of Riple Training for posting this method.
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_x_managing_disk_image_martin.htmlRe the final commercial spot. What I am getting at is if all my media is optimized and therefore in ProRes, and I export in ProRes using the current settings, then shouldn't the media needed to rebuild the project be the same or close to what an exported Quicktime would have been?
Perhaps the notion of "used clips only" is not what it says then. I took that to be the "media managed" feature otherwise why is that wording there. I guess "used" actually refers to all of the media for the project and associated events rather than just for the project. This is misleading because the DUPLICATE operation and menu prompt only appears as a result of requesting an action on the project item.
There are aliases in my original event folder, but before I started this process tried to get FCPX to consolidate media for the project and it already was according the app. Truth is, some of the media is outside of the FCPX required folders. So it's strange that it says it's consolditated, but it's not and yet in duplicating the project it moves the references to the new volume only to point back to the old volume.
So my next question would be: Is there no feature to back up only what's needed to rebuild the final project (edit) reliably. Moving the project moves everything. According to the FCP manual, it seems using the Duplicate feature is the way I should be archiving. However if by "used clips only" FCP X means all media and refrerenced events, then I guess there's nothing for me in here. However then, whey would there be an option (after choosing duplicate project) an option to Duplicate Project and referenced events. If "used clips only" means all media, then there's no difference between the 2nd and 3rd Duplicate Project options.
Thanks Tom. -
How do I mount a disk image that won't open?
I have an external drive Samsung 500 GB that was failing. I think my MacBook Air (10.6.8) caused it to fail because it wouldn't allow me to eject the disk even though I forced quit all programs. I eventually had to just unplug the drive and this caused the external disk to fail as it had not been ejected properly. Not my fault. It's the MBA's fault for not letting me eject the disk. Now the Samsung disk won't mount properly and I get a message that the drive is failing and I should save the data.
Anyhow, I used the free version of Data Rescue 3 to try and save the data on the failing Samsung 500 GB drive and move it onto a brand new Toshiba 1 TB drive.
I was unable to use the normal scanning function of Data Rescue 3 as the hardware of the drive was too damaged, and so I used the clone function on Data Rescue 3 to clone the data onto a non-failing hard drive, with the intent of restoring the data later.
I am not sure if I was successful in making the disk image. It hung up at the 99.6% point for about 12 hours when I decided to give up on it, and I shut down Data Rescue so I could eject the hard disks.
However, it would not let me do it. I tried force ejecting but still I could not eject the disks.
I ended up just unplugging the drives. I think the Samsung drive died almost completely then because it made a whole lot of clicking noises after that (it was only making a few clicking noises before that).
Anyhow, I plugged the Toshiba 1 TB drive into the computer again and used Data Rescue to scan the drive with the disk image on it to see if I could detect files on that drive.
It opened up the structure and I was able to see that most or all of the files were there (abbout 450GB of data) just from seeing the information about the files in the structure tree - the labels of the files (file type labels such as jpg, mp4 etc) and the size of the files, although I could not open up the files to check all of them.
I tested out the restore function of Data Rescue by downloading one file (<10MB) file. I am using the free version and can download one file for free to test things out.
It worked and I was able to save that file onto a second external drive (Western Digital 500 GB) I had plugged in. I had bought this drive just to do the data rescue.
So I think the files are salvageable and the disk image is OK.
However, when I tried to open the disk image in Disk Utility, by opening it as the source and choosing the WD drive as the destination I could not open it. I got an error message. I can't remember what the message was.
I tried just opening the disk image in Finder by just clicking on the disk image but it won't mount.
Is that because my hard drive doesn't have enough space? My Desktop on the MBA only has 12 GB free and the WD drive has only 500 GB on it even though the disk image is about 501 GB.
I don't know why the disk image is that size when the failing Samsung drive only had 450 GB of data on it.
Anyway, what should I do to mount the disk image?
I want to mount the disk image so that I can copy or move the files from it to another external drive so that I can save those files.
Is it because the WD is only 500 GB or does it mean there's a problem with the disk image I made?
Should I try Carbon Clone Copy? I use that to make backups of my MBA internal HDD though I have never used it for opening or making disk images.
I have never dealt with disk images before except for dmg files of applications downloaded from the internet.
I am trying to avoid using Data Rescue 3 as I have to pay for it and if there is a free option, such as Disk Utility, CCC or other, I want to try it to restore the data in the disk image.
Sadly, I think the Samsung drive is ruined beyong repair as it's making a lot of clicking sounds and doesn't mount properly in Disk Image and I get a message that it's beyond repair or something like that in Disk Utility.
So I am relying on the disk image I made on the Toshiba drive to restore my files.
(I think it was the last movie file that caused the problem because it was when I was trying to copy it onto the Samsung external drive, all the problems began - hanging up when copying it, not being able to eject the Samsung disk, causing hardware issues on Samsung disk and getting warning messages on Disk Utility.)
BTW, I learned how to eject a drive when it won't eject the normal way, I have to use command window and type in commands, but that's another post ....
Any advice?
I am thinking of going out and buying a second 1 TB external drive so that I have a disk with enough space to open the 501GB disk image on it, just in case that was the sole problem.
However, I am not sure that is the case, and I think there may be a problem with the disk image or I am not going the right way about opening it.
Thanks for any advice.I think I've found the solution to this problem.
http://superuser.com/questions/19426/im-unable-to-mount-a-dmg-getting-a-no-mount able-filesystems-error
I am following the instructions here:
I ran into a similar situation. I did what simonair suggested and I received a message in Terminal that Volume mounted successfully. However It did not help me access the mounted Volume neither was I able to confirm the mounted Volume. Nor was I able to mount the image using Disk Drill or even scan through. Nothing succeeded.
Here is what I did to solve my problem. I see that in this post some suggested that we should convert name.dmg to writable file. I used the command from Terminal to convert but was not successful. INSTEAD alternatively, I used Disk Utility, attached the Volume (yes I got the same message again, ''no mountable system files'' however, Disk Utility nevertheless attached the image, which I was able to do before anyways. This time, I selected it and then clicked New image, and then selected image format read/write, not the compressed option. I created a new image. This time this image was writable however, it still would not mount using Simonair's solution. However, this time I was able to scan it with Disk Drill with exact file locations and folder hierarchy as I had. Recovering all from thereon was a breeze. Just remember: when you create new image of an attached volume and chose not compressed but read/write, you need to have a disk with exact amount of space that totals the total space allocated within that name.dmg file (not the amount of space the data takes). Mine was huge, and luckily I had an external disk with enough space to do that and it took about 5 hours for about 400GB of disk allocation. Good luck.
And so far it seems to be working. Even though the volume is grayed out on the left side of Disk Utility, I am still able to select it as the source for making a new disk image. I chose Read and Write and no compression.
The only thing I might be doing differently is that instead of choosing the disk image as the source, I chose the volume as the source. The volume is grayed out, but the disk image is not.
It seems to be working all right. Keep my fingers crossed.
If this doesn't work, I will use Data Recovery 3 as a last resort. -
IDVD - disk image missing audio
I made a disk image of my iDVD project (with video & audio) to save space on my external hard drive. It appears that the audio did not transfer. Any help appreciated.
It appears that the audio did not transfer.
Not enough information, as that description can cover two different scenarios.
1. When you play the Disk Image in DVD Player there is no audio. That is a problem.
2. When you look in the TS folder of the disk image you find that the AUDIO_TS folder is empty. That is not a problem, it always is unless you have made an Audio DVD.
Which is it? -
Automating backup to a disk image
I've been playing with Automator to create a backup of some files (Safari Bookmarks, AddressBook items, etc). I was able to create a workflow that involved selecting these items, copying them to a folder, and then zipping that folder up. That worked fine, but I wanted to use a Disk Image instead, so I recreated the workflow as:
Get Specified Finder Items (The Disk Image) >
Open Finder Items (opens the Disk Image) >
Get Specified Finder Items (The Files) >
Copy Finder Items (copies to the Disk Image) >
Upload Files (Transmit, uploads the Disk Image to my backup server).
The workflow is failing on Copy Finder Items (to the disk image).
The msg is "Couldn't create: /Volumes/MacbookProUserBackup/MacbookProUserBackup.sparseimage"
I have already crated the disk image, and it mounts in the workflow fine, it's just for some reason Automator won't copy to it.
Anyone have any ideas?I would first create a blank disc image large enough for what you need. Mount the disc image on your Desktop. Use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone the TM backup to the mounted disc image. Do not use simple copy for this.
Note that the largest disc image with which you can work is a dual-layered DVD that can store about 9 GBs. If your TM backup is larger than this then you cannot put it in a disc image. But you can clone the backup to another hard drive. -
Finder crashes when mounting Disk Image
This is now the second iMac I have seen this happen to and I have no idea what the issue is. OSX 10.4.11
First, MS Office 2004 (all apps) crash just before opening. I get splash screen, everything loads then crashes.
So I downloaded the disk image to update MS Office. When I go to mount it, the finder crashes. When it comes back, the disk image is mounted, but any time I click on it, the finder crashes so I cant even get inside the disk image
This is the case with and and ALL disk images, not just the MS Office update. Ones that were on the computer before this issue and ones I've downloaded.
I have tried different profiles, deleting finder prefs, changing out fonts, running disk utility and applejack, repairing preferences, etc.. Nothing seems to cure this.
This is not a Quicktime/Stuffit issue either. QT 7.6 or the latest security update has been installed.
Any ideas out there. Both machines are in remote locations so I can not easily wipe them and reinstall
Thanks!!It is possible the DiskImageMounter application itself has become corrupted. You could try replacing it with a custom application installation or Pacifist.

TOTAL 320.4MJust ran into the same problem suddenly - checked /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and in the Versions folder there was a bad symbolic link of Current to a non-existent folder D. The only version was in a folder named A, so in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/ I did the following:
sudo rm Current
sudo ln -s A Current
then cd .. to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and
sudo rm Resources
(which was now a bad symlink to the previous /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current/Resourc es/), and then created a new symlink:
sudo ln -s Versions/Current/Resources/ Resources
Went and tried to mount a .dmg image and it was successful, and could also run Disk Utility again.
I have no idea why the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current symlink was pointing to a non-existent "D" folder, or what process did it, but this fixed the problem.
nb: Booting into Recovery Mode and running Disk Utility from there, repairing the disk and permissions did nothing to solve the problem, had to do it manually. If there was more than one version folder, you would have to determine which is the correct one to link Current to. -
Application copied from disk image not recognised as correct arch by Finder
Hi,
occasionally, when I download a disk image ".dmg" that contains an application bundle ".app", I can run the application from the Finder by double-clicking on the icon of the application on the disk image, but when I copy the application to my harddisk, either with the Finder or with "cp -rP", and try to start the copy, the Finder gives me "You can't open the application xyz because it is not supported on this architecture".
However the size of the application bundle, as measured with "du(1)" did not change, and sure enough the copy works just fine when I directly launch the application binary from the shell... The latest example of this behaviour was with the supertuxkart-0.6.1a-full-osx.dmg that I just downloaded.
Anybody seen something similar and/or know what causes this strange behaviour?I have had a similar problem simply making a copy of a .app file. I spoke with Apple support about it and they said this is the desired behaviour when the application is not a universal application.
You can check by opening the info window for the application and seeing if it says Universal next to Application in the Kind field.
If it says Universal, it should copy without problem, if not, then it won't. Apple support wasn't able to give me a clear reason as to why this is, though. -
How do i find or replace the missing disk image for my HD
How do i find or replace the missing disk image? for my HD ........as it is missing when i try to back up with time machine,
i asked for assistance the other day with time machine
now i have worked out this is the reason i can not back up with TM, due to no disk image in my portable hard drive
I saw a post on youtube where it explains you can copy a your HD disk imag from your time machine back ups enabeling, time machine to back up
But i can not find where the TM Back up driver is situated in my TM Back up's
Some advice would be greatly appreceate as i am rather new to Mackintosh
Thank you
AidenHi again.
Just re-reading your first post, I wonder if you're confusing a disk image backup with Time Machine?
It's certainly possible to create a disc image of your Macintosh HD and copy it to an external drive.
However, as a backup that method has a drawback; you can't boot from a disc image directly. It needs to be mounted on a bootable system before it can be used. So it's not really much use if the internal HD fails, at least as far as allowing you to carry on working while the repair is carried out.
Much better (and simpler) is to clone the whole drive to the external using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper (there are plenty of others, but those appear to be the most popular).
That will give you a bootable backup which can be kept up to date by incremental backups using the same applications.
In the event of total internal HD failure all you need to do is replace the drive then boot from the clone and reverse clone to the internal to get up and running again.
Many of us use both a bootable clone and Time Machine (on seperate drives) as each has it's different uses. -
Disk Utility Crashing and Disk Images Not Opening Properly?
Hi,
I got a new G-Tech 500GB external drive that I've got into three partitions. All of them have Tiger on them but the main one I'm using is giving me problems. I have Stuffit Expander 11 on here and when I try to open a disk image it looks like it's opening but doesn't. Also I try and open Disk Utility and it crashes on me. I did a repair disk permissions a few hours ago after restarting up again and it seemed to be fine but now the problem is back.
The other problem I have on and off is that out of the three partitions I'm supposed to put them in the trash before shutting down and sometimes the two not in use won't go in the trash.
Any ideas? The two other partitions I have right now I'm using for recovery stuff from my internal drive.
S.Its the improper unmount of the firewire drive which is the problem. Try to reset all.
1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
4. Wait for 5 min.
5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
6. Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
8. Shut down your Mac
9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
10. Restart your Mac.
All your FireWire devices should reapear, if not repeat the procedure
How to avoid the issue :
The only really proven way to avoid burning up a FireWire port is to connect all devices and to turn them on PRIOR turning on the Mac. Likely, one must unplug them and turn them off AFTER the Mac has been turned off. If you need to connect another device, then you're on for a shutdown of your machine... It's a tad annoying but it guarantees that the FW ports won't be damaged. Be careful when using self powered devices such as webcams, iPods, hard drives or hubs, as they can destroy the port pretty easily. Another thing is to avoid daisy-chaining hard drives.
When the FW port doesn't respond anymore :
In this case, peripherals won't be mounted upon plugging, and won't be displayed in Apple's System Profiler. The self powered devices will still be fed by the port, but won't respond either. It happens that the PHY just hangs after a surge or a random problem. Once hung, the port will not respond any longer, it is possible to reset the component by going through the following steps :
1° boot the mac in Open Firmware by holding [ Apple key - Option - O - F ] after the startup chime. 2° you'll get to a command prompt. the keyboard mapping will be QWERTY, so pay attention when you type the following : RESET-NVRAM (enter) RESET-ALL (enter) 3° Now the mac should restart itself and the port should function properly again. If it still doesn't work, then it means that the PHY is damaged.

Mail on disk image, Spotlight can find messages, but "entire message" can't
For security purposes I've moved my to a disk image. For details on how to do this, see:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5837719
It's a relatively easy thing to do as long as you make sure that a symbolic link exists to your new Mail disk image's volume from ~/Library/Mail.
Getting to the point: Spotlight is able to find my mail messages when the disk image is mounted. So far -- no problem.
The catch is this: Mail->Search->"Entire Message" is completely broken. I get zero results, no matter what the query is. Finder Spotlight searches are able to find results for the same queries. We're talking about local mbox folders, not online IMAP folders. Searches within Mail in To/From work fine.
I've tried the following suggestions, scoured from various help forums:
-- repairing disk permissions
-- rebuilding the Spotlight index
-- deleting Envelope Index and re-importing my messages
-- vacuuming the SQLite databases
None of these suggestions helped.
I've caught wind of this on other forums, but so far there doesn't seem to be a definitive fix, unless I've missed something. I'm not sure if the fact that I'm running Mail from a disk image is particularly germaine to the issue, either.
Any ideas on how to get Search working for entire messages again?

This is a known issue. Check out:

http://www.betalogue.com/2008/03/28/mac-os-x-105-broken-spotlight-indexing-for-m ail-messages-caused-by-presence-of-older-mail-application/
Thanks Dave. I went to Betalogue and went through all the posts and I finally found a way to fix the Search Entire Message Spotlight problem in Apple Mail - at least it worked for me. I have been trying to fix this with all sorts of solutions for months and it turns out it was related to a problem with the Launch Services Database. I confirmed this by looking inside my user/library/mail folder and seeing that inside each Mailbox folder, the sub mailboxes all had standard folder icons and not the inbox tray style icons.
Note that you can easily fix this through Terminal Commands, and not all the following steps are completely necessary, but there are many people looking at these threads that want to just push buttons...
*== So here are my simple steps to fixing Apple Mail Search ==*
1. Attach and turn on any external hard drives you have that may have a copy of Mail.app on them
2. Delete all OLD copies of Mail.app that you can find (don't worry about Time Machine), but make sure you keep the latest version of Mail.app in your working Applications folder.
~ This is so that the LaunchServices database won't easily become corrupt again
3. Install the latest version of Onyx - free to use and download from www.macupdate.com
~ I suggest Onyx, because some people don't want to mess with the Terminal.
4. Quit all open applications and run Onyx (it will want to check your Hard Drive etc...that's OK).
5. Go to the Maintenance pane and then the Rebuild tab and select only the LaunchServices box. Click Execute.
~ This should fix the primary problem with searches
6. When that process finishes, select only the Mail's Envelope Index box. Click Execute.
~ This should fix related problems with other searches
7. When that process finishes, select only the Spotlight Index box. Click Execute. (This process of Rebuilding your Spotlight Index could take hours depending on how big your hard drive is).
~ This will give you a clean fast Spotlight database that Mail uses for Entire Message searches.
8. Quit Onyx
9. Open Mail.app and test your Entire Message Search!
====
Hope that helps - it certainly, finally, did for me!
Bryce.
