Disk image mounting and disk utility oddities on Xserve running OS X Server

I continue to run into an odd problem on one of my server setups. It is a 1.33 GHZ Xserve running OS X Server 10.4.11. There are four ATA drive installed (two of which are mirrored using Softraid 3.6.6). There are a total of 6 Firewire drives on the Firewire 800 Bus. Three of those are used for sharing out files and the other three are for various backups.
What happens is that I sometimes run into an issue where dmg files will not mount. There are no error messages and nothing in the log, they just don't open. Likewise I am unable to launch Disk Utility, it just spins and spins never displaying the drives, again nothing in the logs, no crashreporter. I have also found out that the same thing happens in System Profiler when I try to get a list of drives on either the ATA bus or the Firewire bus. Mind you they all show up on the desktop. Likewise I have had no luck getting them to list or run permissions or the like from the diskutil commandline. Now I am able to mount actual drives. When I swap out the offsite backup drive it mounts the new drive just fine. However... when I eject the drive and it has disappeared from the desktop and then I remove it... I get the removal error.. you didn't put the drive away properly message.
Now there are no disk related events showing up anywhere in the logs. The only other oddity that I can see is that my rsync backups tend to generate a ton of zombie processes. I get zombies of cron, sh, rsync, and mail.
It is just a pretty straightforward shell script
/usr/local/bin/rsync -E --archive -eahfs --delete /Volumes/Files/Shared\ Items/ /Volumes/Backup\ Files/Shared\ Items/
Running in cron with it set to email the logs.
Now this does all clear up when I reboot the server... but it also doesn't reboot cleanly. It closes down all of the applications, login window and the like and then hangs on the shut down portion. Eventually I have to power it off manually. I've done the normal Volume checking on the main drives and they come up with 0 errors.
Hoping someone might have some ideas before I end up having to backup and reinstall the whole thing.

Also when I try to open the disk image file I get the following error in the log.
xserve kernel[0]: disk10s10: media is not present.

  • How do I repair a damaged dmg that won't mount and Dick Utility can't repair?

Apple Care gave me wrong instructions on how to create a disc image of my internal HD then erased it. Now I have a .dmg that has the same gigs as the HD but won't mount and Disk Utility can't repair. Tried to recover files with Data Rescue 3 but that isn't going so hot. Any suggestions?
    Thank you

I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. I guess that it's a moot point to ask if you didn't test the dmg before you erased the drive. Do you have a Time Machine or other type of backup?
If not, it's a hard lesson to learn, but I would guess that unless you are willing to pay for expensive outside data recovery service, all is lost and you are starting over.

  • Can one use the 10.3 Disk Utility on a machine running 10.4?

    Greetings, everyone:
About a month ago, right before departing upon an international voyage, I purchased a used iBook G4 for a really good price off of eBay as I was apprehensive about dragging my much more expensive MacBook Pro along with me (and the iBook handled Finale, the music notation software I use, and its internet terminal responsibilities more than adequately). While the iBook arrived as advertised in superb condition with 10.4.11 freshly installed on the system, the installation discs that came with it are 10.3 installation discs, leading me to believe that the seller uses 10.4 on his primary computer and had simply installed it on the iBook as a courtesy.
As nothing has gone awry with the computer so far, my question is more of a precautionary one than anything else: if I were to ever need to check my iBook's HDD for errors, could I boot the machine off the 10.3 installation disc and run Disk Utility from there, or would that version's DU no longer be compatible with the computer as it is now running 10.4? I suppose I should acquire a 10.4 installer at some point, but seeing as it's really only a computer I'd use on extended trips/as a backup in case something happens to my MBP, I would rather not if I absolutely didn't have to.
    Thank you in advance,
    Benjamin

Hi Benjamin, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Supposedly, if the Discs are 10.3.9 you can use them to repair 10.4.x, but I doubt ant 10.3 Install discs are 10.3.9, less than that is a no-no.

  • Two Xserves running 10.5 Server and setting up DNS...

    Hello.
I have two Xserves (a G5 and a new Intel), both with fresh installs of 10.5 Server on them.
Xserve #1 not going to be hosting any external services (FTP, web, email) and only housing internal, mission critical & confidential data (the server is set up with a mirror RAID on the OS drive as well as mirror RAID on the storage drives + nightly tape backups for offsite storage). Right now there are no plans for enabling iCal on this server as we're trying to keep the server as basic as possible (as we can afford zero downtime on this server), but if the initial setup of 10.5 requires configuration at first run to allow this type of thing, I'd like to deal with it now so as to keep my options open (as I know iCal on 10.5 requires Open Directory enabled).
Xserve #2 is going to host FTP (for external clients) and internal file sharing for the design/production department (basically, for transferring files back and fourth between departments, so no data via this share will be "critical" as it's only temporarily on the server and will always exist in other locations). Even though this server will not host "critical" data, it will share the same backup/RAID scheme as Xserve #1.
So, I'm curious as to how I set up DNS in this situation (so we can associate a domain name to our static IP address). We already have our main domain setup via 3rd-party hosting service (for web & email as we do not want to bring these services in-house), but we're purchasing a second domain that will be associated with company (via a static IP, so we can give a domain name instead of IP address for people needing to connect to the FTP server, make it easier for employees to remember the address for remote connections, etc.).
Because Xserve #2 is going to be hosting FTP, would it make sense to setup DNS on this server and not set it up on Xserve #1? Also, and this could just be me being paranoid, but because Xserve #1 will be housing "critical & confidential" data I want to eliminate as much contact with the outside world as possible with this server, so this is another reason I feel Xserve #2 should have DNS running instead.
Oh, and not sure if this makes any difference, but between the WAN and the LAN is a SonicWALL firewall and currently it deal with port forwarding, etc. depending on what services are being requested from the WAN (ie. remote machine connections, FileMaker remote connections, etc.).
    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Regards,
    Kristin.

There's a couple of things in your post I don't understand:
the server is set up with a mirror RAID on the OS drive as well as mirror RAID on the storage drives
How are you doing this? Both XServes support only three internal drives and two mirrors require 4 drives. Where does the fourth drive come into play?
I'm curious as to how I set up DNS in this situation
There are numerous ways of doing this, but with a single static IP address your best bet is to leave DNS where it is - managed by your hosting provider. Just add a record in the domain zone (e.g. ftp.yourdomain.com) that has the IP address of the public interface your SonicWall firewall. You don't need a separate domain for this. You also don't need to setup internal DNS for this (although you may need internal DNS if you're running Open Directory.
Because Xserve #2 is going to be hosting FTP, would it make sense to setup DNS on this server and not set it up on Xserve #1?
Assuming you're referring to setting up a DNS server - use them BOTH. Make one of the servers the primary server (I'd pick the internal-only server for this) and set the other server to be a slave (so it copies all the zone data from the primary server). That way you have a replica of the data to provide additional resilience.

  • Can mac os x disk utility program repair HD running 9.x?

Hi, I need to purchase Diskwarrior or a similar program to try to repair a "keys out of order" problem which is causing a flashing "?" in folder icon at start up (as reported by Disk First Aid). My question - can I purchase the Mac OS X version of Diskwarrior (since I just want to boot from CD and see if it will repair the drive) or do I need to get the older classic version of Diswarrior? It's a clamshell ibook, which I succesfully booted from a 10.0.3 installation disk...
    Thanks!

    Hello
If you purchase it ships on a CD-ROM that will start up in Mac OS X on a Mac with a G3 or higher processor (including a G5) with built-in USB and 128 MB (256 MB recommended) of RAM.
Once started from the DiskWarrior CD, DiskWarrior can be run from the CD to eliminate all damage to any HFS (Mac OS Standard) and HFS Plus (Mac OS Extended) disk directories, including your normal startup disk as well as journaled disks (but not case-sensitive disks). Version 2.1 of DiskWarrior, also included, runs and installs on a 68020 Mac or better when started from Mac OS 7.1 to 9.x. Either version of DiskWarrior repairs any supported disk no matter which version of the Mac OS is installed on the disk being repaired.
    Hope to help.
    Xavier

  • Encrypted disk image mount error

When I try to open one particular encrypted disk image, a Warning dialog box opens with the following message:
The disk image you are opening may be
damaged and could damage your system.
Are you sure you want to open this disk image?
If I answer yes, the image mounts and I can see at least the one file I tried.
I don't want to risk ruining the contents of the disk image, so I am not using
it anymore, and have run Disk Utility/First Aid on it.
By running this script while Disk Utility "Repairs Disk":
    { while [ 1 ]; do ps axlwww >> psout; sleep 1; done; }
I can see that Disk Utility runs:
    /sbin/fsck_hfs -y -f -g /dev/disk1s2
to check a mounted disk image. This works fine on a good encrypted disk image,
but Disk Utility shows these errors for the broken one:
A Warning dialog box opens with the following message:
    First Aid failed
Disk Utility stopped repairing "Safe" because the
    following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
and the first aid window shows:
    Verify and Repair disk "Safe"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid sibling link
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Any ideas how to fix this? I tried running
    /sbin/fsck_hfs -y -f -r /dev/disk1s2
from the terminal, but it complains:
    ** /dev/rdisk1s2
    ** Checking HFS Plus volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
** Cannot repair volume when it is mounted with write access.
** The volume Safe could not be repaired.
and running it on the parent .dmg file doesn't work at all.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Well, I wish you luck, but haven't seen many people fix busted images.

  • Disk Utility: Creating a new blank image receiving "file too large" error.

    Hello All!
I'm trying to create a 10GB non-encrypted, non-compressed RW blank image via the disk utility. The DU runs for a few minutes then barfs out "file too large" error. I have over 30GB free on my HDD. I tried with a smaller size of 6GB to no avail. Also tried unsuccessfully to create from a file (about 4 GB). My ultimate goal is to create a case-insensitive image to run an extremely important program needed for high priority work productivity (i.e. WoW). Thanks in advance for any advice! You will be my new best friend if you help me resolve this. =D

  • Disk image mounts automatically

Since a couple of days I am experiencing a mysterious problem: a disk image  (.dmg) file keeps mounting automatically  under certain circumstances.
    This is what happens:
    - when I reboot my Mac
    or
    - whenever I choose 'Print' in an application and then select a print option or choose a printer from the printer popuplist
the image mounts and the windows displaying the contents shows in the Finder.
The image is a MacUpdate Promo image of 2009. It is read-only and it is stored on a network drive (a USB disk attached to the Airport Extreme). I can unmount the image, and the network drive, no problem. No files in use. But when I choose Print etc , it appears again!
Now, this image has been there for almost a year, and the problem started only two weeks ago, when I searched the disk for a piece of software (which I didn't find, so I never installed anything off the disk image).
    I'm running MacOSX 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 15" (2010).
I am not aware of any preference setting that causes this. The .dmg file is not in the list of login items.
Anyone an idea what's causing this?
    HE

What happens if you rename the dmg?  Does anything complain after that?

  • 10.5.2, Screensaver Security, and Disk Utility

After installing the 10.5.2 software update, it is appropriate to use Disk Utility (DU) to repair permissions. I learned this from the fact that I had somehow lost the protection I had previously set up by requiring my password to wake up the computer from its screensaver mode. I checked my preferences and found them to continue to call for that form of security with the use of my screensaver. Because my preferred security settings were being ignored, I assumed I needed to repair permissions on my system files. When something isn't working as it should, then it's my understanding that in all likelihood permissions are out of kilter. The Software Update process somehow managed to alter some of my permissions, and again, as I understand it, this is a matter that should be suspected after any software installation.
So I ran Disk Utility to repair permissions.
With Leopard, Disk Utility's repair process runs differently from the way it did in Tiger.
Under Leopard, Disk Utility's repair permissions routine presents a funny user interface. At the outset of the repair process, it ain't exactly clear that anything is really happening even though the repairs are indeed underway.
First thing DU does when the repair process starts is show you a blue progress bar and words to the effect that the process will require about 1 minute more. Then that blue bar sits there doing nothing whatsoever in terms of measuring progress - until about five minutes have passed. During this 5 minute hiatus, DU is building its own permissions data base which it will subsequently use to do its repair work.
Once the permissions data base is constructed, DU's progress bar will suddenly come alive again to show about fifteen minutes longer to complete the repair process. That fifteen minute item changes rapidly from then on, with all repairs being completed in just about five minutes more. (DU took altogether about ten minutes to do its repair thing under Leopard on my computer.)
DU will show you a list of permission faults that it finds, with the ones it can fix, repaired. You may, according to Apple, safely ignore faults listed involving "SUID" or "ACL". (With 10.5.2, the "SUID" faults appear to have stopped showing up but the "ACL" faults continue to be presented on my computer.)
If you have any wonderment about Disk Utility being at work when it appears that it is hung up for about five minutes, then open your Activity Monitor (AM) and select the CPU column. You'll be able to watch DU's use of the CPU while it is building the permissions data base. When DU's CPU usage ceases, you'll find that your permissions have been repaired. You can keep both DU and AM windows open on your monitor if you wish to suffer along with this sort of discombobulation.
After repairing permissions, I rebooted to find my screensaver password once again being called for as it should.

    Okay, just a little update.
I added the replica server to the "Authentication" search in the Directory Utility, right after the OD Master.
I have also added it to the search path in the Workgroup Manager on my 10.4.11 server, and authenticated. Sees it just fine.
Now, when I fake a failure of the Master, (IE, shut it down), it just hangs forever, and doesn't timeout and move on to the replica.
Am I missing something? Isn't this the point of a replica?
    Help?
    Thanks!

  • Can Disk Utility warnings and odd behavior be ignored safely?

I have  a late 2012 Mac mini with a fusion drive. which will not repair using Disk Utility. In addition, I have been unable to partition it. When I try to verify the disk I get: Unable to bootstrap transaction group 461088: invalid field value
    No valid commit checkpoint found
The volume CEF34A3F-08C3-45A5-9A87-C383B300541E was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
If I run disk repair it goes into a loop saying that the disk needs to be repaired.
I took it to the Apple store where they were also unable to partition it, but they did say that there is nothing wrong with the disk. Can the above  warning and behavior be safely ignored? Oh yes, I forgot to mention that the mini often hangs when I restart from the Apple menu.

    The problem is solved,
I took the Mac mini to the
Apple store again and this time they rebuilt the fusion drive and installed a fresh copy of OSX. After copying my stuff over from a Time Machine backup and running Disk Utility again a get a nice reassuring green text saying that; 'the volume appears to be o.k.'
       Thanks to all.

  • Time Capsule Disk Doesn't Appear in Finder or Disk Utility

I have a 500G Time Capsule (single band, I think) that I want to partition (just into disk images, not volumes) so that I can maintain separate-sized locations for my family's music library, photos, and Time Machine backups for the non-media files on each of a Mac Mini and 4 laptops.  But I will ask more about that later.
My more immediate problem is that the Time Capsule Disk Volume generally just doesn't appear in my Finder or in Disk Utility at all.  A couple weeks ago, for some reason, it did appear once and I took the opportunity to create a 215G Disk Image--leaving 250G for the rest of the Disk Volume which was indicated as having 465G rather than 500G actually available.  But since then (as before) the Time Capsule volume hasn't appeared in Disk Utility at all, and only rarely in the Finder.
In the Finder the Time Capsule appears under the Shared heading in the left panel, with the Time Capsule disk volume appearing as a folder in the right panel (if it connects, which it usually requires a password for, but sometimes it doesn't...).  If I open the folder then the right panel goes blank (indicating, I think, that I have opened the volume but there is nothing inside) and the volume (usually) eventually shows up under my own Mac in the Devices heading.  (That is, the Time Capsule disk volume shows up along with Network, Macintosh HD, and Remote Disk in the right Finder panel when I select my Mac under Devices in the left Finder panel.)  At that point the TC volume shows up in the Finder as a 220G Volume and the disk image shows up indented under it as a 215G Disk Image; indented under the Disk Volume there is also a 5G Sparsebundle file from a Time Machine backup.  If I open the 220G Disk Volume in the right Finder panel then it shows only the 215G Disk Image and the 5G Sparsebundles in the right Finder panel.  This seems to suggest that the 215G Disk Image and the 5G Sparsebundles are both treated as 'used' and the 220G size given for the Disk Volume represents what is left (although 215+5+220=440, so where the extra 25G went I don't know).
If I open the 215G Disk Image in the right Finder panel then, after a while, it shows up as a Disk Image in the right Finder panel when my Mac is selected under Devices in the left panel.  I can create folders in the Disk Image and copy documents to those folders, at least.
But in any case, regardless of whether I open the 220G Disk Volume or the 215 Disk Image in the Finder, the Disk Volume never appears in Disk Utility so there is no possibility of reformatting it.  The 215 Disk Image has sometimes shown up in Disk Utility (and once it apparently allowed me the option of partitioning the Disk Image into further Disk Images), but sometimes it doesn't show up and I haven't been able to figure out why it does or doesn't.
I find this all very confusing and the Finder and Disk Utility behavior seems downright erratic.  I'm not sure whether something is broken or if I just don't understand how it works (starting with the difference between the Devices and Shared headings in the left Finder Pane).  I would appreciate any advice on how I can reliably access the Time Capsule disk volume in the Finder and Disk Utility.  Thanks.

Same problem after 10.8.2 update yesterday,
Time Machine functions but disk does not mount in finder.
The disk also shows up in disk utility when TM is running
as mounted (beneath a sparse image file) but not visible.
Is this a bug, or a feature?

  • Xserve RAID won't RAID in disk utility

I have a XServe RAID that won't RAID in disk utility. The XServe is fully populated and there are two arrays created. Both of those arrays show up in disk utility and will only be partitioned with an Apple Partition Map. If I try to partition them GUID, that partition fails (system formatter failed). Once, I partition them APM, two volumes show up on the desktop. Then, I try to create a software RAID with those two volumes and I can not get the volumes to RAID together. The error message in disk utility says (RAID can not be modified). I have checked the system log and it says something about a socket error or that it can not bind. Does anyone have any ideas on why I can not create this RAID?
My end goal is to have 2 hardware RAID 5's and put a striped RAID set on top of that to have one large volume for Final Cut video editing.
I'm using a Mac Pro with Atto Celerity 42ES fibre card.
    Thanks

This may be a little too late, but maybe it will help. I'm not sure why this happens. I reinstalled my server, and I could not access the drives, even though they showed up in disk utility (as a blank file).
Here is what I did to fix it:
    1. Open up Disk Utility
    2. Make a disk image of the drive you want to mount, save this somewhere accessible (i saved it on another one of my RAID drives)
    3. Erase the disk, it should then mount and be accessible
    4. Restore the image onto the drive.
    Cheers!

  • Disk Utility - Time Machine & iCloud

I don't understand why Disk Utility doesn't automatically run Verify & Repair after a resizing a disc partition.  This simple failure on my part (unGENIUSness) lead to additional failures on when I tried to run TIME MACHINE.  Time Machine never stopped running and never once created a successful disc image.  I've seen other posts about this and it seems to be a very common failure.  If Disk Utility doesn't run Verify then Time Machine should have.  I can see this being an issue in iCloud too - not on Apple's Server end, but on the backup - if their is a formatting or disc error on the target device.  Time will tell.
