Disk Image Setup on Time Capsule

I currently use my 2TB Time Capsule as a backup for one laptop and for my iTunes media files (which I periodically back up to an external hard drive manually).  I'm planning on adding my wife's laptop's backups to the mix and would like to reserve room for the growing folder of music plus other data files.  After some research, it appears that the best way to keep Time Machine from filling all available space with backups from our computers would be to use disk images.  I'm considering two different tactics:
1.  Create a disk image with a capacity of, say, 1TB to which I'd move the library (I'm assuming that Time Machine will respect the capacity even if the image isn't full, right?).  The issue I have with this is that I don't want it to affect how iTunes accesses the files wirelessly.  Is there a particular way I should create the disk image so that iTunes simply access the files as it does now (i.e., no encryptions, passwords, turning into sparsebundle files, etc.), but also maintains the capacity in such a way that the backups won't encroach?
2.  Keep the library in its existing folder on the Time Capsule, but create a bunch of empty disk images that will keep the sparsebundle backups from encroaching.  I could then delete the empty disk images as the need for room increases in the library.
Any thoughts on the best way to do this, or on showstoppers I haven't thought of?  Assuming either approach works, I'm also looking for advice on format, partition, and image format specifications for setting up the disk image(s) in Disk Utility.  I'm assuming I can avoid the encryption/password problems by simply leaving encryption marked "none."

if I were going to use one of these drives as my primary iTunes media location, I'd either have to leave it plugged into the TC all the time or manually attach it every time I wanted to access those files.  The former seems like a bad idea
Not really.  Running constantly is one of the least-stressful things that a disk drive can do, much easier on it than regular starting and stopping.
Do you know of any reason why the disk image idea wouldn't work, specifically?
I wouldn't put your iTunes files into a disk image unless you were sure you were only going to mount that disk image from one Mac at a time.  I'd expect the mounting of a read-write disk image on multiple Macs to cause trouble.
Putting empty disk image files on the Time Capsule disk would accomplish what you're trying to do (reserve space so that Time Machine doesn't consume it all), but that requires a fair amount of management on your part to monitor the space usage.
If you decide to go with disk images, be sure that you don't use a "sparse" variety.  You want the type that initially reserves the entire amount of requested disk space.

    This is a complex procedure.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a minute or two
Plug the power cord back in to the back of the Time Capsule

  • Can Time Machine write to a Disk Image on a Time Capsule?

I just inherited a Gen 1 Time Machine (500gb).  I have three Macs on my network.  In my current set up I have an external 500gb drive split into three equal partitions, one for each Mac.
I know I cannot partition the TC HD, but I also know I can create one or more Disk Images.
Question:  Can Time Machine write to a Disk Image on a Time Capsule?
    Thanks.
    MotionMan

I know the backups will not mix.
One of the Macs is a MacBook that only hooks up to the network every couple weeks.  Before I partitioned my existing TM backup disk, the TM backups of the other two Macs were filling the disk.  When the MacBook then tried to make a backup, the oldest backups of the MacBook would drop off.
So, the other two Macs had backps for months, but the MacBook ended up with much less.  That is what lead me to the 3 partitions, so each Mac had an equal space for their backups.
Odd that there there is no good solution for this.

  • Deleting Sparse Disk Image Bundle from Time Capsule

Howdy. Thanks in advance for help on this issue to anyone kind enough to spend time answering it.
I've got a 1TB Time Capsule which I use primarily for external file storage - it's currently got just about 120GB of files on it which I have manually copied there. I only sporadically use Time Machine to do automated backups, but since I've had the Time Capsule for a good long while, there have been many backups, and relatively little space left on it. As I am not interested in files that are 8 months old, I have gone into Time Machine and deleted all the old backups I don't want, then done a fresh backup so there's a current copy of everything on my laptop. It's my understanding that deleting backups from within Time Machine clears space off the Time Capsule, and when I did those deletions, saw that the available space on my Time Capsule did in fact increase, but not nearly as much as I would have expected.
Now, there's a file sitting on my Time Capsule called a "Sparse Disk Image Bundle.dmg", which has a filesize of 564GB - so there's where all the "free" space on my Time Capsule is accounted for.
My question is, if I know that I don't want the contents of all the old backups, but I DO want a copy of the files I have manually copied onto my Time Capsule, is it safe to delete the 564GB .dmg file? I use my Time Capsule more than anything else as the repository for my iTunes library, and it'd be a huge bummer if I wiped out my entire music collection by deleting that file.
So far as I can tell, the contents of my Time Capsule and that .dmg file are separate, but I don't know enough to know whether that's really the case.
    Any advice is well appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Yes, network backups are in an odd container called a +sparse bundle.+ It should be named with your Computer name plus a string of 12 numbers and letters (the hardware address of your Mac).
Do you see your "other" files separate from it? They shouldn't be inside it, unless you specifically copied them into it.
As long as they're shown separately, yes, you can safely delete the sparse bundle. That will delete all your backups, though, and take quite a while. If it seems to be taking forever, see the blue box in #12 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
There is an alternative, however. You can limit the +maximum size+ of the sparse bundle, per #A8 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). As noted there, however, if you update to Snow Leopard, 10.6.3 or later, it will be automatically re-sized to the size of the TC's internal HD.
If it's already too large, you may need to delete some more backups and/or "compact" it first. See the pink box in #12 of the FAQ.

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

  • HT3275 Time Machine could not complete the backup.  The backup disk image "/Volumes/ELBs Time Ca/ELB's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.

For the past couple weeks, my Time Machine has not been backing up file from my MacBook Pro.  I've had the Time Capsule for a couple years now.  Entering the Time Machine I discovered that there are no files before "yesterday" yet there are only 161.0 GB of 998.06 GB available.  A "Failed" message apprears with a popup message: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/ELBs Time Ca/ELB’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."  How can it be in use when Time Machine takes hours looking for the device?
Another error code message also pops up from time to time: Finder error code -6584.  What is that?  And how is it fixed?
All software is up to date on this computer and Time Capsule.

Further to my earlier response (system re-start and firmware update resulted in full Time Machine backup) I waited until the next scheduled backup to determine success.
As it has turned out, the Time Machine's next backup was for 48 kb  and ran for eight hours!  The progress bar was complete (solid blue) and I therefore stopped the backup.  It has been "stopping backup" for the past hour.
What is wrong with this process?

  • How do I setup my Time Capsule (3rd Generation) to be accessed from the internet while I'm traveling?

How do I setup my Time Capsule (3rd Generation) to be accessed from the internet while I'm traveling? It is installed on my home network behind my TWC broadband router.

Ok.. since the TWC modem is also a router.. all configuration takes place on this box.. NONE whatsoever takes place on the TC.
There is no airport utility 7.7.3 but there is a firmware of that number for the latest AC model TC..
    Is it tall like this.
    Then it is Gen5.
otherwise it will have a firmware.. 7.6.4 or earlier and the airport utility must be 6.3 or earlier.
Open the Airport utility and give us a screenshot of the summary page.
That will also help us determine that you have the TC, which version and how it is setup.
You might want to press the edit and also give us the Internet and Network tab as they should be set correctly as well.
I have created a DDNS through DYN.com although I am not sure how to implement this into the TC.
You do not do anything in the TC.. set it up in the Ubee router.
Port forward 548 to the TC in the Ubee router.
And make sure the TC has a static IP in the Ubee router.
Overall if you find this too hard I strongly recommend you buy a product designed for remote access .. eg WD MyCloud.. they are cheap and easy peasy to setup for remote access.. by PC or Mac and since it is built outside of Apple you not bound up in Apple limitations built into all their equipment to prevent you using it the way you want.. rather than apple want you too.. eg BTMM and iCloud being the only way apple provide for access to the TC and only when it is the main router of the network.
You are fighting hard because Apple made this hard.. not easy.

I am trying to setup my Time capsule via a ethernet cable as a back up for a new iMac. The on button on the time capsule set up window keeps failing to stay on. Any ideas what to do?

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • HT4522 what is the preferred disk erase mode for Time Capsule

I've been wanting to re-format my Time capsule as I've bought a new Mac Book and currently have 2 backups loaded. Since I've merged data, I wanted to erase and re-use the TC.
Can someone tell me what the preferred disk erase mode is for TC.

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Disks tab at the top of the next window
    Click Erase Disk
You will be presented with several Erase options.....Quick Erase, Zero Out, 7 Pass, etc.
Quick Erase will only take a minute or two and be fine for your purpose since you are keeping the Time Capsule.
If you were moving the Time Capsule to another user, the Zero Out option will replace everything on the drive with zeroes. This will take 3-5 hours depending on the size of drive that you have in the Time Capsule.
7 Pass zeros the drive 7 times, etc.
BTW, the Time Capsule drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This cannot be changed unless you pull the drive from the Time Capsule (voids the warranty), place it in a separate enclosure and use Disk Utility to make the changes that you want.
Then, you have to reinstall the disk back in the Time Capsule.

  • HT202174 In need to change from appleshare to mac os journaled disk format on my time capsule. How to proceed?

In need to change from appleshare to mac os journaled disk format on my time capsule. How to proceed?

No Time Capsule disk can be formatted other than the automatic system in the TC itself.. You simply select erase and it will reformat the drive.
If you are referring to a USB drive.. plugged into a Time Capsule.. you must plug it into your Mac and use Disk Utility.
However you do need to understand.. appleshare is not a disk format.. it is a partition scheme.. so when you pick the disk you need to change its partition to GUID.. this is nothing to do with Mac OS journaled format.. the two are distinctly different. Also Appleshare works fine for most people.. there really is no need to change.
Anyway here is how to do it.
I have sd card I can use as example. Click on the Partition Layout.. so you can choose something else.. notice it is presently set to Master Boot Record.. but is formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled.
When you change the partition layout Options at the bottom will become active and you can change the setting. Click Options.
Choose whichever. GUID is the current system for boot drives.
None of this is relevant to the internal disk of the Time Capsule.

  • Internal Disk Error - 3rd Generation Time Capsule

    HI all,
I have read many of the discussion points relating to the "Internal Disk Error" on a Time Capsule and the need to take it to pieces, extract the drive and use DiskWarrior or similar to restore the data.
I use my TC as a backup drive, so although the data was important I didn't need to recover it.  I have connected it via a caddy and erased it.  The drive is perfectly viewable on my Mac via USB in the caddy.
When I have reconnected it all (correctly) in the TC and connected to it the "Internal Disk Error" remains.  The TC therefore still doesnt work as a backup drive just an expensive wireless Access Point.
Any ideas, as I could really do with the drive backing up my Mac again....

The Gen3 finished production June 2011 but most are older than that. It does suggest all of them are over 2.5 years.
Do you have a computer still running 5.6 utility.. that will give you a lot more info??
Gen 3 has a bunch of faults caused by the failing ceramic caps.
    See https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/new-issue-with-a1355-gen-3-tc
The ones with Flextronics power supplies are probably more fragile than the Delta.. did yours have a black plastic coated power supply or was it translucent plastic??
That is why I suggest using it via USB as it will not load the power supply as badly.

  • How do I setup my time capsule with wireless internet?

I I have "Clear" so theres no place on the device to plug up an ethernet cord.. PLEASE HELP!!!! Would like to use the time capsule mainly as an external hard drive. PLEASE HELP!!!

For factory reset.. what model do you have??
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.
To join a wireless network and assuming you are using a Mac with v6 utility..
    1. Full reset of the TC. as above.
    2. Open the airport utility.. the Mac must have internet connection to the wireless router which is working.
Click on other wi-fi devices which is your reset TC.
    3. The utility will choose the wrong item. You are not creating a network.. so click options.
    4. Click add to existing network.
    5. Make sure you then get the right network.. this is from my main router.
    6. The utility will then use join. Fix the name to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric .. for better networking.
    7. The utility should complete the setup.. and you will probably need to fix a few things.. passwords or other errors fix them all up.
    8. You can now click edit and go the wireless tab and see the details.
This will give you extremely slow speeds.. it is highly NOT recommended.
