Disk image size

Hello. I have a number of files on an external drive that I would like to save to an encrypted image. The files amount to over 300 gb(and will grow). The external HD is 500gb. Is there a limit to the size of dmg file? Is there a better way to lock/encrypt the external HD rather than using a dmg file? Thanks in advance for your help.
Greg

Thanks for quick response! It looks like the "sparse disk image" format is the way to go. One other question: do I need to have space on my external HD to create various sparse disk image(s)? example: external HD free space is 75gb(out of 500gb)The files I want to put into the dmg file is on the external HD(425gb). Do I need to move the files to another HD, create the sparse image(s) and move back the files? Also, when adding files to the sparse disk image will I be alerted when I reach my limit or when there is no space to expand to my set size? Thanks again.
Greg
There's no limit to the size of a disk image - at
least, whatever limit there is is way higher than
500GB. If you look in Disk Utility -> New Image
there's a popup menu where you can specify the image
size and it includes a 'TB' option, so you can scale
into the terabyte range.
Using disk images is one of the easiest ways to
encrypt data, so that's a good start.
In addition you can create the image as a 'sparse'
image. This means that you can create a 500GB image,
but it will only consume the actual amount of disk
space required by the files it contains. This
contrasts with a typical disk image which would
consume 500GB of space even if 499GB of that was
empty.

  • How to Increase disk image size of SAM

    Hello,
I am trying to increase the disk image size. I am trying to increase to about 6G, but SAM just refused to load the image.
So, is there a limit in SAM about the virtual disk size? Or is it limited to the physical memory of the system?
I have read the thread http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5239257&tstart=30 and http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=837&threadID=5286038 about enlarging the disk image.
I am using OpenSparc T2 Arch 1.2 and the int12 boot bundle. I am wondering if I should change to the sasdisk for a try.
It is strange, that I previously ran the simulator on a Solaris Express (actually 5.11), and it worked fine.
But now I changed to the Solaris 10, then it failed.
    Thank you.

As it turns out, the way to make the image appear larger on the page is to edit and increase the size of the signature "box" on the pdf (under Forms > Add or Edit Fields), to considerably larger than the form might indicate.  Otherwise, the signature is constrained to the just the size of the small field on the pdf.  Interestingly, as soon as you do so, the signature appears "bolder", likely just because there is more of it.  Thanks for your suggestions!

    Done. Thank you, Allan.
The sparse image article you sent a link to needs a little updating (or there's some variability in prompts (no password was required) with my OS and/or Disk Utility version), but it worked.
Phew! It would have been much more time consuming to use Time Machine to recover all my photos after repartitioning the drive.

  • IPhone SDK disk image size?

Hi everyone, thanks in advance for the assistance.
I've tried downloading the iPhone SDK about 4 times now (using Safari). Each time, Safari indicates that the download is complete. But when I attempt to mount the disk image, I keep getting an error that says the disk image failed to mount. The reason simply states "not recognized".
The DMG file size is 2,147,484,366 bytes. I'm not sure if this is correct, but I've tried 4 times now, and each file is exactly the same size.
Can anyone provide any advice? Thanks very much.

No, not at all. Just plain old Safari (and attempted from plain old Firefox too).
I'm still having the same problem.
Here's what I've considered so far and ruled out as possible problems:
    1) Browser issue - tried on both Firefox, Safari
    2) Network issue - used both my ISP & my office network
    3) Hard drive space issue - but it has 23GB free
    4) The source file has a problem - but surely someone else would have experienced the same problem as me.
    My next 'tests' will be:
    5) Can my drive store files larger than 2GB?
    6) Can I download it correctly on another mac?
    7) Can I download it correctly on a Windows/Linux machine?
    8) Email Apple and ask them for help.
If anyone can suggest any explanation or reason for this, I'd really appreciate it. I don't know enough to suggest a reason why my browser reports a complete download, but the file is short 0.1GB.

  • Disk Utility, disk image help

I want to burn a disk image onto a disc using disk utility, however i dont know how to and my blank disk is smaller than the disk image size. SO i need to compress it. Can anyone tell me what to do and how i can burn a disc image onto a disc which is too small?

Not all disk images are compressed, but you can't make a compressed disc (not with standard software).  You can store a compressed disk image on a disc, but it won't behave like a normal disc (e.g., you'd need to mount the disc, then mount the disk image stored on it separately).  If you want to create a normal, mountable disc, you either need to get a physical disc of the appropriate size and burn the uncompressed image onto it (Disk Utility has a Burn item in one of its menus), or you'll need to reduce the size of the uncompressed disk image to fit the size of the disc you have.

  • Creating FAT32 Encrypted Disk Image

I have a 2TB WD external hard drive and am looking to have half of the space used in such a way that it is password-protected and also can be accessed by both Macs and PCs.
    I have tried the following:
    Disk Utility
    New Blank Disk Image
    Size: 1TB
    Format: MS-DOS (FAT)
    Encryption: 128-bit AES encryption
Partitions: Single partition - Apple Partition Map
    Image Format: read/write disk image
    Received this error message:
"Unable to create "testname.dmg." (File too large)
    ALSO:
    Disk Utility
    New Blank Disk Image
    Size: 1TB
    Format: MS-DOS (FAT)
    Encryption: 128-bit AES encryption
Partitions: Single partition - Apple Partition Map
    Image Format: sparse disk image
    Received this error message:
"Unable to create "testname.sparseimage." (Invalid argument)
Thank you. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
AppleCare was unable to provide a solution.

FAT file system has partition and file size limits, which apparently you exceeded. I think the file size limit for a FAT32 file system is (2^32) - 1 byte.
    See here for more info.

  • Encrypted disk image from ****

So i made an encrypted disk image and forgot the password.
    The disk image:
    Size: 100 mb
Format: Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
    Encryption: 25-bit AES
    Partition: Single partition-Apple partition map
..and no, i didnt save the password on my keychain
...(you can stop laughing now :P )
I´ve been in contact with Apple Care and we spent about 3 hours trying loads of things with no luck.
I know im more or less f*ed, but i know there is a lot of smart ppl on this forum.
If anyone has idea, no matter how crazy, im willing to try it.

    Hi Worm76;
My suggestion is forget about what was in the encrypted disk image. Write it off as lost.
It would take someone like the NSA to get it back for you and I doubt very much that you have anything in there to interest them.

  • Larger image size and disk performance

    hey all,
Granted the majority of users here won't experience issues with larger image sizes, but i'm hoping a few may be able to shed some experience.
I work with a H3D, Mamiya RB (with various Leaf backs) and also drum scanned film. The issue is that often a single image size can be anything from 150mb upto 500mb, this is excluding any post production changes.
My current aperture library is on a FW800 disk, but disk i/o is crippling the box and program at the moment. I'm looking at the express slot and wondering who here is running a disk off that and what they feel it's like from a performance perspective.
An example is a recent location shoot which has a handful of images above 500mb each. Aperture takes around 10-15 mins to startup when this folder is selected (constantly processing the image every time it starts) and this leads to a totally unresponsive OS.
How are you handling large files with Aperture?
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)

On the Quad I process 250Mb+ TIF scans, not often, but often enough. External drives 7200rpm in a Sonnet 500P encl. attached to eSATA muliport card (Sonnet E2P). Performance is equal to internal so far as I can judge.
I recall the PCMCIA then PC Card bus speed was horrendously slow. Not sure what the Expresscard bus speed is, but it would be a crying shame to attach 300Gb/s burst capable drives (or RAID 5 driving 200Mb+ continuous) to a backend bus capable of a few Mb.
As Alan notes, a MBP may be OK for field work and tethered shooting, but for the image sizes you have, the preferred solution would be a Mac Pro.

  • Disk-image files- file size

I have created a disk-image file on my backup hard drive to save important data. This has 2 folders of around 180mB. I am now trying to save more files and the message comes up that there is not enough free space to copy the file. Do these disk-images have a certain size and how can I determine this. Is there an option to create bigger image file sizes. I would ideally like to create disk-image files up to 4 gB and then burn to DVD for backup.

    Welcome to the Forums!
Yes, disk images have the size specified when they are created. You can't increase it, you need to create a new, larger disk image and copy the files to that.
You can see the size by selecting the disk image then File menu > Get Info, or by mounting the disk image, opening it and looking at the bottom of the window.
Use Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility to create a new disk image. There's a default choice for 4.7 GB (the capacity of a DVD).
    Hope this helps...

  • Issue with size of disk image on an external drive

I am trying to make a 900GB encrypted disk image on a new (blank) Lacie 1TB external drive. When I try and do so, I am told that there is only space for a 500GB image. When I tried to do the same thing on a Seagate 1TB external drive, I had no problem in doing so. Lacie tells me that it's an OS issue and not a disk issue. Any thoughts as to why this is happening?

I had already contacted LaCie; they weren't too interested and told me to contact Apple. I contacted Apple and the tech guy said that in order to create a diskimage of xGB, one needs 2xGB space on that drive. I don't know why that is and I didn't ask and nor did I have the energy to ask why it then worked on the Seagate drive. He said I can use FileVault 2 to secure the external drive...

  • How do you create a disk image of windows so u can increase partition size?

Ok, I have installed windows on my mac using bootcamp so i can play pc games and such. I mainly use the mac side of the computer but I have 30 GB devoted to windows. I ran out of space though and now want to uninstall windows so i can make the windows partition bigger. The problem is that I don't want to have to install ALL of my programs over again once i reinstall windows so I want to take a disk image of windows which i can revert to once it is reinstalled. I tried using the disk utility to do it but it keeps giving me error messages. Does anyone know how do create a disk image using windows??? or maybe I'm doing something wrong with the disk utility??? HELP!

The easiest way I have found to do this is to backup the windows partition with a program such as WinClone
    http://twocanoes.com/winclone/
Then use the bootcamp assistant to erase and recreate the partition, finally restoring the backup to the new partition. I have done this several times with my mac and it works great.

  • File Size on Disk Image 3.5Gb- 6Gb ???

I'm noticing that disk images created by iDVD 5.0.1 after november 4 are about 6Gb rather than the previous 4Gb (best quality mode, output to hard drive).
There were a number of s/w updates around that date. Anybody seeing similar issues, maybe this even related to a separate post about mpx problems?
Burning these files through disk utility to DVD will obviously fail.

    Hi Johan,
You probably have a DVR-109 DVD burner which the OS 10.4.3 update makes it compatible with double-layer in iDVD. You can go to the menu Project > Project Info and switch the Media Type back to 4GB, when you save your disk image again, it will be smaller. When you use the double-layer (8GB) setting, iDVD encoding is different, even if your project is under 4GB, iDVD encodes it such that the DVD data contents are evenly spread across the two layers. Therefore it is bigger than 4GB.

  • Disk Utility create encrypted disk image hangs

I'm trying really, really hard to backup my data but apple is not making it easy for me.
I need my files encrypted for an offline backup. Time machine only allows home folder to be encrypted, and due to my home folder being on my SSD drive I cannot fit my files all in there, not by a long shot.
Using Disk Utility, I choose "new disk image from folder", and select "read only", 256-bit encryption. Some of the folders worked. However some will just hang for hours on "Creating Image, copying...". I can see at the destination the dmg file has stopped incrementing larger. It has reached the full size of the folder approximately. Does apple fail at some file types? I already ran disk repair several times to no avail. I don't know what else to try, it just doesn't want to work. All I want is an encrypted backup, that any OSX install can retrieve without any special software involved. Sometimes I'll get a very unhelpful error message "Operation not supported". Whatever that is supposed to mean. Google was no help so hoping for some insights here.

Create an encrypted sparse disk image instead of from folder, mount it, and then drag & drop your files into ii.

  • Disk Utility doesn't finish creating new disk image - naming issue??

Recently I upgraded to Snow Leopard and carried along an empty disk image created in OS 10.4.11. I use these for archiving data on read-only DVDs and password protect the images.
In the earlier OS, I found the practical limit for the dmg was 4.3 GB, containing 4.27+ GB of data (anything larger failed when attempting to burn data DVDs). Today, when I looked at my empty dmg file, the OS 10.6.6 Finder showed it to be larger both inside and outside (just under 4.7 GB inside I think - didn't write it down). I suspected that it may be corrupted or at least not give correct directory information, so I deleted this dmg as a precaution and tried to make a new one with the old size by selecting custom size within Disk Utility. Now every time I try to create a new dmg this it stalls at about 100 MB.
The image format panel has several additional settings in OS 10.6 . There are two places for names - in the "Save as" field above and in the "Name" field below. (Haven't yet found any documentation where the reason for this is explained or which lists possible name limitations. The Help info appears to be identical to what was in 10.4) I've tried making both names the same, but it still stalls
    Disk Utility settings:
    Save as __Diskname
Name in lower field __Diskname (have also left it blank no difference)
    Custom 4.3 GB
    Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    128 bit encryption
    single partition
read/write format* (also tried CD/DVD master - no difference)
    * All files are not necessarily added at once so I'm pretty sure I want this to be read/write
Message was edited by: James Kilgore
In case this isn't obvious I mean read/write formatting on the hard drive, but when burned the format will remain the same whether or not the disk used is rewritable

    Hi Michael,
Did you reformat it HFS+ or something else?
Some USB2 Flash Drives Write at a disappointing USB1 speed, but Read at USB2 speeds.
From what I can find, that isn't one of them and should take maybe an hour & a half to transfer 30 GB to it. Of course if write speed IS USB1, then you could expect 2 days or more.
I'd stop it. Reformat it, then make the Image on the HD and try transferring it.

  • Recovery Software for Disk Image Backup on External Drive

Hello. I am currently running OSX Yosemite on a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. However, before I upgraded from OSX Maverick I installed a SSD as a boot drive and moved my original Toshiba HDD to the optical bay for media storage. Before the installation, I purchased a LaCie 1TB external hard drive, formatted it, then dragged the entire Toshiba HDD image from the desktop to the external HD. That image is visible on the external HD but is inaccessible by Disk Utility, whether I use it from the HD, the SSD, or the Installation DVD. All scans and attempts to mount and open the image fail. I realize now I made a mistake by not cloning the Toshiba HDD onto the external HD before starting but the image size (on the external HD) is 187GB, which corresponds with a somewhat compressed ~220GB (the original size of the Toshiba HDD). Therefore, it seems as though the files are present and intact, albeit currently inaccessible.
Is there any way to recover the files from the disk image, i.e. via Data Recovery Software such as Data Rescue 4, Stellar Phoenix or R-Studio? Alternately, could I use the same software to recover the now deleted files from the wiped and reformatted Toshiba HDD? I'm having trouble accepting that the 187GB of data on the external drive are really gone, as it represents over a decade of media collection and contains many irreplaceable files. I'm hoping there is something that can be done before spending a lot of money on clean room data recovery services. Please help!!!
Thank you in advance as any and all advice is very much appreciated.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
