Disk Images in Disk Utility Don't Work

I think that either I have a misunderstanding of .dmg files or Disk Utility isn't working. I see a .dmg as an exact clone of a particular file or folder that when opened mounts a volume on a user's desktop with contains the files.
However, if I use DU and I selected new disk image and I want to make a disk image of all my desktop images I'm not able to.
I click new image and it asks me what to call the .dmg file, is asks me where to save it, what size it should be, etc. But, it never asks me which file or folder I want to make the disk image of. This is weird. (maybe it is because I don't understand the concept of a disk image) All is does is make the .dmg file and mount the volume with nothing inside.
If I were to copy all the desktop pictures into the volume, eject it, and then remount it they are all there. This works, but I must be missing some hidden files. I thought the idea of a disk image was to select the folder or file from which to create the .dmg file and let DU create it so that NO hidden images were missing. Thanks for the help.

You almost have it.
To make an image of a mounted volume, run disk utility and select the volume from the list on the left. Click on the 'New Image' icon and then give it a name in the save dialog.

I know how to make a disk image of a mounted volume (a CD or DVD) by doing the above mentioned. What I want to do is make a disk image of a folder on my HD. This is were I get into a conflict in which it asks me where to save to .dmg file, and how big it is, but never asks me from which the .dmg is to be created from.

Trouble creating a small disk image with Disk Utility

When I try to create a disk image using Disk Utility the size option for 2.5MB is grayed out and I cannot override this by manually entering the size I want. Ideally, I would like to create a 500KB-1MB size image to store 1 or 2 files that I want encrypted. Thanks for any help.

Choose a filesystem which isn't journaled to get the 5MB option; if you want to create a 2.5MB image, specify Mac OS Standard or MS-DOS. Some disk formats have a minimum size.

Creating a mp3 disk image with disk utility

Hi,
I'd like to create a mp3 disk image with disk utility. In the end I would like to have a mp3 disk that plays in various stero system and macs.
But I want to add some additional files: a png file for a nice folder background of the dmg, a special image for the dmg, and some text files relating to the mp3s.
Is this possible at all? Is there something I have to observe creating the dmg?

You need to know which file systems your "various stereo systems" understand. The default file system created on a diskimage when burning is a hybrid file system- HFS+, ISO-9660 with Rock Ridge, and Joliet with Rock Ridge.

Can't create disk image with Disk Utility

I just upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion and i can no longer create disk images with Disk Utility in order to store encrypted data.
The operation fails and ends with the post :
Failed to create disk image, error:
hdiutil: create failed - Resource busy
I use three Macs with Mountain Lion, and this problem occurs only on one of the three.
I check the disk, repair permissions and did a reset of the PRAM. I even did a reinstall of Mountain Lion, without success.
But curiously, using a new user account, I was able to create a first disk image. But no one after.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

Unable to create restore disk image with Disk Utility

I've tried three times in order to create a restore image of the users' volume of my Powerbook. I followed exactly the procedure explained typing "man asr" in a terminal window. I booted the Powerbook in target disk mode while connected to my iMac G5 from which Disk utility was run. Every time the disk image creation failed with a log report like this:

I don't know how my imported music could create such a problem to Disk utility, nevertheless I removed the incriminated song from the Music library but another one raised to be not accessible. Then I booted the powerbook from the supplied Tiger DVD too, and I got an error over the music file, something about an allocation that was 190 instead of 1, I got the volume repaired from Disk utility but the Disk image creation failed again without any hint because booting from DVD does not allow to save log file anywhere. Why on Earth I can't manage such a critical task as back up under Tiger while using Panther everything worked like a charm following the same procedure? Is anyone experiencing something similar?

Hi Lee, thank you for your answer, indeed I've just read carefully your article few hours ago, while I googled the net to find some hints on my issue. I think that I've followed exactly the right procedure to make the back up image, and can't find what is wrong. Actually Disk utility Repair disk successfully repaired the allocation bit (whatever that means) of the music files but that wasn't enough to let the creation of the disk image. Quite odd that the music files where recognized as messed up by Disk utility only booting from Tiger DVD and not while the Powerbook was connected to an iMac running Tiger too.
I'll do further investigation during weekend.

Encrypted Disk Image to Password Protect Folder Not Working!

I have followed the instructions exactly for creating a Disk Image in order to password protect a folder. Folder contains multiple types of files including images, pdfs, etc. Here is what I've done and what happens:
In Disk Utility I created a New Disk Image from Folder. I chose the folder, which I have on my Desktop, and clicked Image. I gave the Disk Image a new name, placed in on my Desktop, indicated the image format as read/write and chose the 128-bit encryption. I chose a very strong password and unchecked the remember password box. At this point, all seems to have gone well.
Now, back to my Desktop. I have two things going on.
1. The initial folder that I wanted password protected is still present. Am I supposed to just send this to the Trash?
2. When I double click on the the new .dmg file that I've created, I am asked for my password, which I put in. Then, nothing. I mean, nothing happens. It doesn't open, it doesn't do anything. I can click on it and choose Open with DickImageMounter, and nothing happens. I can open with Disk Utility, but this just gives me the normal options to eject, burn, restore, etc.
I don't know why I can't get this to work properly, and I'm a little annoyed that Apple can't make it as simple as selecting a folder and having the option to password protect it, just like you can a normal file. PLEASE HELP!

As of OS X 10.7.4, Disk Utility had a bug that prevented it from creating an encrypted disk image with a password of more than 10 characters. I haven't checked recently to see whether that bug has been fixed, but from your report it seems not to have been. There is a workaround, but it's complicated.

Unable to create an encrypted disk image with Disk Utility

With our upgrade to Lion a few weeks ago, we're now unable to create an encrypted disk image of any type using Disk Utility any more. This problem occurs on 3 different machines, and is reproducible whether one is using an internal HD or an external FW HD. We can successfully create nonencrypted disk images.

We haven't had any luck with a solution trying various permissions fixes as helpfully suggested by other readers in response to the error message # (-60008 error), so I'm hoping that someone else has run across a solution from the encrypted disk image perspective and that this tag line will generate some help.

Creating floppy disk images (from Disk Utility) recognized by Parallels

Hi there,
After making the Parallels plunge last week, and installing a couple of my old OS's in it, I unearthed my old MS-DOS 6.22 disks. (remember that, boys and girls?)
With the help of my brother, I managed to export the contents onto a USB flash drive in the hopes of creating the necessary .fdd files that Parallels uses to create a virtual DOS machine.
(FYI - I already have DOSBox installed... but now with Parallels, I was looking to install the real deal)
Normally, renaming a .dmg file (created through Disk Utility) to a .fdd should force Mac OS to associate the image with Parallels, and thus allowing it to be recognized as a valid floppy image.
Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case for me. Parallels cannot recognize the disk images created as floppy drive images. Even after formatting the volume as both MS-DOS and MS-DOS (FAT 16), nothing seems to work.
I've already checked the Parallels forums, but couldn't drudge up anything. I was hoping one of the Level 3+'s here had some experience with this.
Am I missing something in the Disk Utility .dmg creation process of these files, or would I need a separate application to create a valid .img/.ima file to get this to work?

Burning disk images on Disk Utility...

How do I burn multiple Disk Images onto a single DVD that I can then use on a PC? I have several 3 CD application images, and I want to convert them to DVD, but I can't figure it out, and I have no clue how this can be done! thanks!
(PS) I also have Toast Titanium 7, and even that doesn't seem to have an explanation on how to do this!

I purchased several software titles that were released on CDs (3 cd set!) once I have turned them into disk images (DMG and/or IMG), how do I burn the 3 images into a single session DVD for use on Windows XP? as far as I know, XP can only read single session DVDs and CDs, so I need this to be burned (3 IMG files) onto the single session DVD, but i have no clue how to do it. please help me! thanks!

Cannot create disk image in Disk Utility

I am trying to create a disk image of my macbook pro hard drive to an external firewire drive. The image starts, then I get an error that says "unable to create disk image: Input/Output Error"
I've verified both disks and permissions, but the image creation still fails. I've never had this happen before, and can't find anything about it. Any ideas?

I just wanted to backup my HD before I upgraded to tiger again .. had my main HD go flakey on me and had to resort to my back up jaguar drive - You're a genius and this worked for me .. as I got the device busy message as well. I figured it was because I was on my start up drive, but didn't have the extra OS drive anymore to switch start up disks to do this.

Try this. Open disk utility and highlight your
MacintoshHD(the one you want to copy). In the
options inside the
window(FirstAid-Erase-RAID-Restore) choose restore.
For the source--The Top field--Drag the highlighted
MacintoshHD to the source field.
Destination Field--Drag the image of your lacie
drive(Thats also in the side bar below your
MacintoshHD) to the destination field. click
restore....

Trying To Create Encrypted Disk Images With Disk Utility.

I am trying to create encrypted read and write Disk Images of around 2 GB to 6 GB with Disk Utility.
More often than not the dmg is NOT encrypted.
It seems very hit and miss . . . . most of the time missing!
Is this process notoriously unreliable or am I likely to be doing something wrong?

I made another, unchecking the Keychain box, and it worked perfectly.
I have been using a password which is used for other items.
Now the .dmg has been created can I check the Keychain box and if so what are the benefits?
I have never understood what the Keychain does.

To create an image file, launch Disk Utility and select File: New: Disk Image From Folder. In the window that appears, navigate to the desired folder and then click on Image. Give the image file a name, and click on Save when prompted. That’s it.

I am trying to burn a disk image on DVD using disk utility in OS 10.3.9.
When I click the 'burn' button only the internal CD-writer appears allthough an external DVD-burner is connected via USB 2.0.
Does anybody have an idea how to make disk utility recognize the external device?

Can't create disk image using disk utility

Recently,i have been trying to backup my DVDs and CDs(mainly movies) using disk utility.To my disappointment, i wasn't able to create a disk image despite several attempts using dual-layer DVDs,normal CDs,single-layer DVDs.
It is so frustrating.....i can't figure out what went wrong.
Can anyone help me in this?

When I try to create a new disk image of my harddrive, either on a networked drive or on a local firewire drive, I get a message saying " Cannot create image, the resource is busy"
Any ideas ??

RAM is not the problem then.
I suggest you verify your startup disk in Disk Utility and, if necessary, repair it with your install disk, then repair permissions.
Please post back with results.
